Came as a couple for a birthday and did the premium tasting menu. Incredible food and exceptional service!
Toilets out of order so had to queue 25 mins each to go - not good when paying £140 for a meal, no hand towels in the toilets. Steak was massively over-salted so not edible. Iceberg lettuce salad and kimchi? Not so Japanese... Dessert platter was nice. Staff were helpful enough and they were generous with the drinks. Roka Charlotte St is a better experience.
Quality has dropped since 2017, a pity because it used to be a favourite Japanese hangout of ours
All very good without being great!!
Food as always was outstanding. Drinks took ages to come. Waiter and manager stone faced and not friendly (but not unfriendly!). We ordered edamame straight away as we were starving (it was 8.30pm) and they brought with the rest of the food. Why would we bother to order them early then!
They ran out of tofu! Two out of 3 of us are vegetarian. When we asked why - this is the only source of protein on the menu for vegetarians, the manager said they'd run out, and to order broccoli (is this a sensible recommendation - I think you have to consume a whole broccoli to get any significant amount of protein from it!). Roka serve about 5 pieces in a portion of broccoli..
We then said - isn't there any alternative?
He said - we have a different type of tofu, but "you won't like it". We asked why (totally mystified!) and he said - it's silken tofu. We asked them to make a dish out of it anyway, which they did. No apology, no smile, nothing. Surprised that this guy is managing a top restaurant.
No hand towels in the washrooms, when I asked for directions to the washroom the lady said "go that way". Thanks...!!
We love Roka, have been many times, love the food. The miso aubergine is incredible and I also enjoyed the chicken skewers. The tofu dish was decent in the end and the rice hotpot was delicious.
Overall, would always recommend Roka due to the incredible food, but the service at the Aldwych branch is severely lacking.
Great experience. Great staff. Loved the food and the restaurant. Want to come back.
The staff were superb, polite and friendly. The food was good but there’s room for improvement.
We enjoyed a fabulous meal at Roka Aldwych for my husband's birthday. It was a Tuesday night and the restaurant was pretty busy, however, it wasn't too difficult to hold a conversation as the music (if there was any!) wasn't overpowering the whole restaurant. The food was lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely dine there again.
Absolutely brilliant! The food is INCREDIBLE, service was fantastic. It’s expensive but really worth it for a special occasion. We will definitely be back
We went there for the Bottomless Brunch (check out for deals on Time Out). Service was great as was the food. Didn't feel rushed and there was definitely a lot of food and plenty of Prosecco.
Fantastic food, but it was slow to come out and waiting staff towards the end of the meal were not very attentive. It took easily 10minutes for my bill to be delivered and another 10 before someone came to get payment, in which time I was sat waiting with my credit card visibly out and ready to go!
I went for my birthday, and the food was absolutely delectable. Staff were very kind and ambiance that was created was spectacular. Would highly recommend for a birthday, especially with the desert platter they provide.
Food was fabulous. Sashimi, tempura, black cod and the beautifully light cheesecake for dessert. Would highly recommend and we will return...
Had seasonal set menu. 5 star starters and desserts, but let down slightly by nice but very unremarkable chicken and salmon main course. Would recommend but wouldn’t have this set menu again.
The front of house was good & we were taken to our table swiftly. Service went downhill from there sadly. It took a while for our food order to be taken & I had to ask for a drinks menu. The food itself was good (but there wasn't a huge amount of it on the set menu). The sashimi arrived after one of the main courses. The server volunteered to take it off the bill but then forgot to do so. I was lunching with clients but luckily the dessert & hot drinks upselling later on wasn't too awkward.
After they left, and I was sitting at the empty table to pay the bill, the server didn't come for ages (10 + minutes) so I gave up. I found her having a gossip with a colleague round the corner.
Would I go back? Yes, the food was good & I am sure that the other servers are much better! That said, probably only if the client I am entertaining has already been to the other local restaurants.
Everything was so nice, especially the lobster! But the side to the lobster wasn’t that good, and I really miss the crab rice hot pot...
Food is good but the atmosphere is too noise to carry out a decent conversation. The service is not bad.
Great quality food!! Enough said!
The food was amazing
The drink service was poor. When you are on a tight turnaround insisted upon by the restaurant and you wait 15 mins for repeat drinks it’s ridiculous.
We had a wonderful dinner at Roka Aldwych. The service was very good, the food delicious and the entire ambiance rather supporting of having a conversation without too much noise or loud music. Thanks.
Had heard many good things about this restaurant and was disappointed. Left waiting by staff to show us to our table when we arrived, waiter was condescending and the food was distinctly average. Yet one of the pricier meals you’ll find outside the traditional expensive London restaurants. Can get so much better for less and so much better for more, not sure what the fuss is about.
I love this restaurant, the service is always fantastic, professional, not too intrusive and always available . the food is amazing as usual.
Great all round, friendly staff who also found and returned my wallet
Food fantastic, but service haphazard
It was not a good start as one of the guests arrived early to be told there was no booking. when I arrived I showed the confirmation by email on my phone. This was despite phoning twice, the day before and the day. I note also that they were participating in the sake week during our dining experience and we were not offered our free glasses to try.
The food is amazing, every dish was tasty and imaginative.
The service is attentive but relaxing and the waiting team had good knowledge of the menu.
Would defo go back
What an outstanding choice that was to celebrate a family birthday pre phantom of the Opera at the West end.
Felt like we have been whisked away to another country. The ambience, the food, the waiter we had, who has just completed his 1st month there, the shift and restaurant managers who came to see how we were. And of course the food, all we're top notch !!
Only downside was that when i ordered what was the best scallops I've ever had ! I ordered a skewer.. and expected a few scallops on it, when in fact there was only 1 scallop on 1 skewer :) so had to order another. If prices were slightly lower and we had more time, we would have ordered more food. But we enjoyed everything we've ordered. Fillet steaks were done to perfection as per our choice of wellness, tampura vegetables where fresh and crispy and the rice hot pot was delicious 👌 my 11 year old loved his sushi and chicken skewers and the Alaska dessert was outstanding. will definitely be coming back 💜
It was a pleasant experience with very delicious food.
Fantastic place, we were there to celebrate a birthday. Lovely food, great service and a lovely atmosphere too.
Always a favourite, never disappoints
Lovely food and good service. Very accommodating to the fact my wife was pregnant and offered alternate options to the food she couldn’t eat. Only negative was a loud obnoxious table next us but not the restaurants fault!
Just a great tasting menu. Wonderful variety and superb quality
Excellent brunch deal best for groups of 4 or more. Amazing pudding!
I have been here several times and the food is excellent. However on this occasion the service was so poor I had to complain. This has not been the case on previous occasions.
Food was brought to the table far too quickly between courses not allowing time to appreciate the food property in my opinion. Over priced but food is excellent, just not worth the extraordinary charges so not great value, again in my opinion.
Food was delicious- went for the set menu option and felt like the food all came a little too quickly. Would be ideal for a quick lunch. Lovely cocktails in the bar first.
Have been wanting to visit for a while and ROKA surely didn’t disappoint.
The Maki sushi was excellent , I had the lamb with Korean spices for mains and it was cooked to perfection .
We had to try the dessert platter as this is what ROKA is famous for but I was a little bit disappointed , the sorbets , cheesecake and chocolate dessert were all great but the fruits ruined it for me (personal opinion )
Apart from that ROKA gets a 9 from me and will be returning soon To try the premium tasting menu
Loved the food and the atmosphere. Would definitely go again!
If you like private equity backed, scalable, Japanese themed eating experiences delivered by decent but likely none-too-well-paid young Europeans, you’re quids in. Another London machine for leasing space, decking it out to feed and then taking well-heeled diners’ money whilst leaving those doing the work wondering if they can afford the bus fare home. But maybe I’m wrong!
Christmas present lunch before theatre so kept the food light and avoided too much sashimi or rice. Tempura was light and tasty the sauces maybe a little similar Spicy beef was magnificent and the sea bream lovely with tasty asparagus
Would definitely come here again with a bigger group to choose more dishes
