The name ROKA carries great meaning - ROKA is a meeting place where food and drinks are shared with friends (ro) and heat, warmth and an all-embracing energy surround (ka). The principle cuisine is from the robata grill, which originates from the fishermen of the northern coastal waters off japan, who would cook the fish on the boats with different charcoals and share the bounty with one another using their oars.
The robata grill itself is located amid diners and forms an integral design element of all the restaurants. Not just a feature, the robata is more the beating heart of ROKA, the area from which all energy flows. An energy that offers warmth and enjoyment while guests admire the respect given to the food as each dish is prepared.
ROKA charlotte street opened in 2004, ROKA canary wharf in 2009, ROKA mayfair in february 2014 and ROKA aldwych in october 2014.
Great quality food!! Enough said!
The food was amazing
The drink service was poor. When you are on a tight turnaround insisted upon by the restaurant and you wait 15 mins for repeat drinks it’s ridiculous.
We had a wonderful dinner at Roka Aldwych. The service was very good, the food delicious and the entire ambiance rather supporting of having a conversation without too much noise or loud music. Thanks.
Had heard many good things about this restaurant and was disappointed. Left waiting by staff to show us to our table when we arrived, waiter was condescending and the food was distinctly average. Yet one of the pricier meals you’ll find outside the traditional expensive London restaurants. Can get so much better for less and so much better for more, not sure what the fuss is about.
I love this restaurant, the service is always fantastic, professional, not too intrusive and always available . the food is amazing as usual.
Great all round, friendly staff who also found and returned my wallet
Food fantastic, but service haphazard
It was not a good start as one of the guests arrived early to be told there was no booking. when I arrived I showed the confirmation by email on my phone. This was despite phoning twice, the day before and the day. I note also that they were participating in the sake week during our dining experience and we were not offered our free glasses to try.
The food is amazing, every dish was tasty and imaginative.
The service is attentive but relaxing and the waiting team had good knowledge of the menu.
Would defo go back
What an outstanding choice that was to celebrate a family birthday pre phantom of the Opera at the West end.
Felt like we have been whisked away to another country. The ambience, the food, the waiter we had, who has just completed his 1st month there, the shift and restaurant managers who came to see how we were. And of course the food, all we're top notch !!
Only downside was that when i ordered what was the best scallops I've ever had ! I ordered a skewer.. and expected a few scallops on it, when in fact there was only 1 scallop on 1 skewer :) so had to order another. If prices were slightly lower and we had more time, we would have ordered more food. But we enjoyed everything we've ordered. Fillet steaks were done to perfection as per our choice of wellness, tampura vegetables where fresh and crispy and the rice hot pot was delicious 👌 my 11 year old loved his sushi and chicken skewers and the Alaska dessert was outstanding. will definitely be coming back 💜
It was a pleasant experience with very delicious food.
Fantastic place, we were there to celebrate a birthday. Lovely food, great service and a lovely atmosphere too.
Always a favourite, never disappoints
Lovely food and good service. Very accommodating to the fact my wife was pregnant and offered alternate options to the food she couldn’t eat. Only negative was a loud obnoxious table next us but not the restaurants fault!
Just a great tasting menu. Wonderful variety and superb quality
Excellent brunch deal best for groups of 4 or more. Amazing pudding!
I have been here several times and the food is excellent. However on this occasion the service was so poor I had to complain. This has not been the case on previous occasions.
Food was brought to the table far too quickly between courses not allowing time to appreciate the food property in my opinion. Over priced but food is excellent, just not worth the extraordinary charges so not great value, again in my opinion.
Food was delicious- went for the set menu option and felt like the food all came a little too quickly. Would be ideal for a quick lunch. Lovely cocktails in the bar first.
Have been wanting to visit for a while and ROKA surely didn’t disappoint.
The Maki sushi was excellent , I had the lamb with Korean spices for mains and it was cooked to perfection .
We had to try the dessert platter as this is what ROKA is famous for but I was a little bit disappointed , the sorbets , cheesecake and chocolate dessert were all great but the fruits ruined it for me (personal opinion )
Apart from that ROKA gets a 9 from me and will be returning soon To try the premium tasting menu
Loved the food and the atmosphere. Would definitely go again!
If you like private equity backed, scalable, Japanese themed eating experiences delivered by decent but likely none-too-well-paid young Europeans, you’re quids in. Another London machine for leasing space, decking it out to feed and then taking well-heeled diners’ money whilst leaving those doing the work wondering if they can afford the bus fare home. But maybe I’m wrong!
Christmas present lunch before theatre so kept the food light and avoided too much sashimi or rice. Tempura was light and tasty the sauces maybe a little similar Spicy beef was magnificent and the sea bream lovely with tasty asparagus
Would definitely come here again with a bigger group to choose more dishes
Average food that is over priced
My girlfriend and I had supper at Roka on our anniversary. We had the seasonal tasting menu, starting with a glass of house champagne, and accompanied by a bottle of chenin blanc. Even though we were right at the back of the restaurant, we weren't forgotten and the service was excellent, as was the food. There was a real buzz but we could still hear each other to talk. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Went for pre-theatre dinner - great, swift service that we asked for was successfully delivered.
Fabulous spinach and sesame salad!
Great spot for great food and an amazing interior design. Pre theatre was easy - seated at 6 and out to the theatre by 7:10. Each entree was fresh and very creative. In London it is a must visit
Roka is one of the best restaurants I have been to. Will definitely go back.
Always a good experience at Roka
Very very loud
Batman was very very rude
Food was poor portion especially the blacken cod £35 for more or less a fish finger
Not at all attentive to see if needed another drink
Too many waiters
No personal touch
Wouldn’t recommend this branch of roka restaurant
Great service and quality food. The Han Setto menu with free flowing wine was amazing value - we were offered more of the sharing plates and the attentive staff always made sure our glasses were full. The Dessert platter was impressive and delicious.
Worth every penny, definitely recommend. I didn’t even realise we could have saved a few quid if we had the timeout voucher.
Noisy ( you had to scream when talking to your friend at the table). Food was ok, but nothing extraordinary. Service ok, but slow, warm food was not warm!
Overrated and overprized, we think.
Simply exceptional pan asian cooking. Sublime flavours and very well connected ingredients. Phenomenally expensive as portions are small so you need to order at least 3 starters between 2 people - same for main (four between 2) but worth it. Service a little haphazard (involved a word with the manager to get this back on track) but sommelier was very good, with some very adept recommendations.
Generally a good experience but was not as cozy or comfortable as Great Charlotte Street venue.
Short-ish menu, but each item was consistently excellent at Roka Aldwych. In particular the sashimi and robata grill items were fantastic . Highly recommended
Love Roka. I used to go to other branch, but this is also very good. Service was great
Very lovely, staff very friendly
The food was absolutely superb at the Han Setto brunch. However, there were only 4 of us, and we were surrounded by tables of 8 people and the noise level was incredible - people shouting across tables at each other. The staff kindly moved us to the lobby area which was much better but we were then surrounded by people’s children running around our table. It’s a shame that for such good food it’s so rowdy - I’ve had a la carte dinner there before and it’s been absolutely fine so it might be the bottomless booze that makes it so disruptive.
Lovely meal, and good service. A little loud, but otherwise good
My second visit but first for evening dinner. Our table was for 5.30 pm prior to attending the theatre. It was quiet at that time but was pretty full by the time we left at 7 pm. Service was just right, the food delicious. I personally struggled with the chopsticks but a fork was supplied on request.
We had the £44 set menu which was lovely, especially the steak. The house red was extremely palatable.
