San Carlo - Leicester
Nowhere near as chic as other SAN Carlo outlets
Lovely food and welcoming staff. Little extras that make it special. Would highly recommend for any occasion.
First visit and given good table in atmospheric dining room that clearly has its regular clientele - always a good sign. We were immediately offered drinks while we pondered the menu. Food delicious but had to ask several times for bread and service at times inattentive. But will definitely be back and make sure we leave room for pudding too. A Leicester gem
Very good evening
Food was very good but service was very poor as through the meal
As always very, very good and would highly recommend to friends.
Good central location. Great ambiance. Service excellent. Food was excellent
Really good service but felt they tried to cram too many people in which meant waiters/waitresses constantly pushing our chairs trying to get buy
A lovely birthday meal and very attentive staff
Staff are really rude but the food is lovely - depends if you’re happy with that trade off really
Excellent authentic Italian food. Really enjoyed the meal, good sized portions and fresh ingredients.
I had been before Xmas with 4 adults and had a lovely meal so booked a table as we were attending the theatre with my children and some friends. The table was reserved for 5pm we arrived at 5pm on the dot to be looked at in surprise and when the manger took my name he advised ‘I had you down as I no show’ I looked at my watch and said it is 5pm? The table was not set up for the party of 7 meaning a further place had to be crammed onto the already small table. I added comments to the reservation stating that there would be 3 children. I have to say that they service was absolutely awful! It was were clear that from the moment we walked in that they did not want children in the restaurant. My children were impeccably behavioured making no noise and were made to feel very uncomfortable. The place was only half full, they rushed the service as quickly as possible and could not wait to get us out of there. Food was nice except don’t adult the meat ball main, you get 2 small meatballs. When we questioned the waiter didn’t understand and said ‘you want more’ to then 10 minutes later bring over one more small meatball, seriously not worth it, we thought it was a joke! Nice place and good food just never take children! If you don’t want children then state adults only!
I asked the waiter to check if the apple strudel had nuts in it as I have a nut allergy. He said there wasn’t and served it up. After having a bite of mine, my partner noticed there were walnuts in hers. The waiter did not apologise and tried to say I didn’t ask him. If I had eaten it I’d have been hospitalised. Someone with a severe nut allergy could have been killed - which would have serious implications for the owners. It’s a great restaurant but the service lets it down and I won’t be going again, especially because there a lots of restaurants who bend over backwards to make sure their customers have the right experience.
Attended for new year's eve. The food standard is usually brilliant but was massively let down by poor taste and serving cold. The staff as ever were keen to get us out.
Good food , service pretty good enjoyable and good location
First time here for a few months - very different from previous experiences - seems they are aiming for a different market. Menu was narrower tho the food was great 👍. Seem to cram a lot more people I. Staff were lovely but didn’t listen to the order so that made service poor and we had to challenge the bill as some things hadn’t been served at all. Not sure what has changed but this used to be good and service plus but now like any other Italian chain but more expensive - not sure I would go out of my way to go again. Such a shame as it once was special
Very busy, nice staff but not enough of them. Food was nice but overpriced and small portions ie. 4 pieces of ravioli for £13
The best Italian restaurant in Leicester! Extremely friendly service and we didn’t have too long to wait for our main course (we did not have starters). Main course and desserts were just great. We were there this time for dinner.
Next time we come to Leicester, San Carlo will be the place we dine at.
I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Had a few issues whilst at the restaurant,
- The water jug was cracked and quite frankly dangerous with potential for glass to get into the water !
- I asked for a bottle of peroni which arrived ready poured in a glass. When I asked why it’s not in a bottle I was told it was poured for me. How do I know it wasn’t poured from draft ?
- the glasses on the table were cracked
- the ambience in the restaurant made it feel more like a cheap place as apposed to a premium restaurant
Poor service , asked to move tables, error with food , errors on the bill
lovely restaurant, friendly staff, a must on every visit to Leicester.
Lovely ambience, food and service. Be careful if you drive, you could struggle with parking as the location is prime.
After many years as a family visiting SC it’s gone down hill
To have to tell the staff how a basic pizza should be served and our advice acknowledged by another table having their choice served as we recommended says it all.
How can a very basic dish as spaghetti and meatballs be served on a par with a school canteen ?
We appreciate that a total staff change has been implemented and new staff need time to bed in but not at the loss of food quality.
We may come in a month to see if there is an improvement. However with the prices they charge compounded with poor quality it may explain why only 30 or so customers all night.
Came for a meal with my partner and both of us got violently sick within hours of eating here. Not what I expected from a very highly regarded restaurant which was also very busy.
Nothing special , wouldn’t recommend , food wasn’t great either
San Carlo is always a must when visiting LEICESTER. From the friendly faces that great you, to the amazing food delivered to the table, the experience is always Fantastic. EVERYTHING is Authentic Italian, from the Incredible Staff, the never ending wine list and the exquisite food. This is by far one of my FAVORITE restaurants in all of ENGLAND. I can't wait to get back there.
We have eaten here before and were very happy, so we decided to go back after watching a game of rugby at Welford Road.
Staff are always very friendly, talkative and helpful with meal choices. Service is normally quite quick, even though they have been busy whenever we have visited.
Food is very tasty and always well presented. We would definitely go back and I recommend anyone to give it a try
Slow service and drink people. However the food was good.
Used to have a good food here but last visit was very disappointing both mains were very poor one had to be sent back and completely spoiled the experience. Will not be going back
The food was up to its normal standing but my wine was I thought corked and the wine waiter thought it a 'bit sharp' but is was changed but we had to request when the bill was presented for the original wine to be removed , which is was. All in all very good but felt a bit rushed and thought they just wanted our table for others.
The specials were fantastic and the quality of the food was excellent. The music was a bit too loud for quiet conversation but didn't detract from the enjoyment of the evening. Well worth a visit or another visit.
Good food and service - the occasion was enjoyed by all. Would return. The restaurant was not busy, so was a little lacking in atmosphere. Candles on the table would have been nice as it was a little gloomy.
I would highly recommend San Carlo Roberto and the staff are so welcoming, the food was good and the surroundings are excellent
A catch up late lunch with a friend. Lovely food downed with a shared bottle of wine. Nice range of starters to choose from and the fish is usually very good here.
Returning customer as never disappoints and didn't again
Our first ever visit and so good we rang them the same evening when we got home and booked again in a couple of weeks time. Delicious food and great, friendly service.
Excellent at lunchtime: not crowded; excellent service and food; quiet: you can hear each other across the table; and you do not feel at all rushed to finish. Been here several times, always excellent.
Food was very pleasant. We had a starter each and a main. Arrived early evening so it was difficult to comment on atmosphere potential and ambience. The service left a lot to be desired and at no time did staff ask if the meals were appropriate. There was sufficient staff on site, but there didn't appear that they were working to any routine. Having dined in Manchester and Birmingham this was certainly not to there standard. That said we would be willing to attend again to see if improvement has been made
Whilst the food was good the service was abismal . Never again.
We had an excellent meal at what was an extremely busy restaurant on the final Christmas Saturday. Although we had booked well in advance, we did have to wait a little while for a table which was not a great problem as they had a nice bar downstairs. Given how busy they were the service was good, quality of food excellent throughout and we did not have to wait too long. Highly recommend it.
