Pass beneath the awning of The Leonard Hotel’s Georgian front door, turn left and you’ll find yourself in Seymours - a thick-carpeted room full of paintings, upholstered armchairs, sofas and an open fireplace. The feel is decidedly English country house, and Seymours menu matches perfectly with a smattering of English favourites on offer, rounded out the small, but perfectly formed menu with a few old school European classics for good measure. Start with succulent king prawns pan fried with garlic and white wine sauce, or a refreshingly light pumpkin & ginger soup. For mains, we love the comforting retro offerings of Steak Diane, fish & chips and bangers & mash.

Seymours Ratings and Reviews
We really enjoyed our meal and fabulous service of the friendly staff of Lemon Sole for a special evening. The owner of the restaurant looked after us very well.
Thank you Lemon Sole. We shall return and we will recommed your restaurant to our others friends !
Was a bit shocked at the special offfer, 2 main meals for the price of 1, as to have it you had to have 2 courses and choose from the market menu which was the most expensive. As we did not want a starter we decided not to have the special and selected from the other menu which was lovely. I think it should be made clear that you have to have 2 courses.
We booked Lemon Sole for a romantic evening meal and we weren't left disappointed. If you're looking for a great rustic, intimate ambience then book downstairs in Crofts vine cellar, or for something a little more lively, upstairs. But beware you're likely to have a queue of people waiting to order their food from the fish counter. We felt that the food is slightly overpriced for what it is, but the atmosphere and service more than makes up for the premium you pay. We'll be heading back for sure
Lemon Sole seafood restaurant in Portsmouth is an excellent choice for a wonderful variety of fresh fish which you can choose yourself from a counter, together with sauces. The is owner very knowledeable and helpful on cooking and suggestions. Vegetables, potatoes are extra so be aware as price can easily mount up. Good selection of wines but again fairly pricey. Lovely firendly staff, Good service. Will certainly visit again.
The restaurant was charmingly decorated and very comfortable. Service was excellent, food was delicious. My only criticism was that the menu was limited to steak and chicken. It would have to have seen a main fish course. The deserts were gluten free. Staff were friendly without being overly familiar.
2nd time we've been and the food has been excellent on both occasions. Would take any offers going as it can work out a bit pricey. The idea is fantastic, you choose the fish you want and the guys cook it however you fancy. The service was a little slow 1st time, but that has improved, and everybody is very friendly and the boss comes and chats. We took our ten year old, first time they made up a pasta dish for him no prob, this time talked through how he wanted his fish(not easy!and he loved it
We went to the Lemon Sole, Portsmouth on a quiet Thursday night and were pleasantly surprised. The staff were extremely polite and friendly. We opted for one of the platters for two, fairly pricey but included three delicious, fresh pieces of fish, cooked perfectly in a beautiful, tasty sauce with an abundance of other seafood. Deserts great too! Only gripe is "french bread" was actually the part baked supermarket stuff But overall we loved it and will definitely be back!
We enjoyed a plesant evening at Lemon Sole. Had the 2 courses for £15 there are supplements for some of the dishes on the menu which range from £1.50 to £2.50 but overall was good value for money. Food was very tasty. Service was friendly but when ordering extra drinks was a bit slow especially when the restaurant became busier. Would go back and take up the early bird deal again.
We went to Lemon Sole for the £10 lunch menu. Felt the tables were very close together. Not overly keen that you have to go to the counter to order your food. Portion sizes were pretty small, but the food tasty and enjoyable. For £10 per head, can't really complain. Would go back again.
The Lemon Sole lived up to expectations and the fish was excellent, innovative and well presented with a very good and intriguing choice. They need to catch up with the incrreasing demand for good rose wine - but the wine list was otherwise very good. Our service was good but later diners were frustrated by a long wait from order to table and I would recommend going early rather than late to avoid this. Mine host is welcoming and informative.
Lemon Sole has a great twist on food ordering. You turn up to the fish counter and let mine host wax lyrical about the produce and how it will be cooked. This is a good icebreaker if you're with some new friends. The downside is you have no idea of the cost until the bill turns up. All in all though a good experience.
Lemon Sole lunch special offer was a real treat. The £10 for 2 courses plus a glass of wine sounded too good to be true. The meal far exceeded my expectations - there was a good selection of dishes on the menu, including meat & veggie options if you didn't want fish. I'd go there again.
Lemon Sole - went for lunch time meal, the fish pie was sold out, bit of a shame. Could do with happier waiters, and bigger portions. Not sure where the menu description was lost from kitchen to meal, but my chicken had no red pepper. Will probably go back again though, and try the wine cellar and main menu out, rather then the 2 for 1 offer, might get better choice and service.
we went to lemon sole using the daily mail promotion so didn't get the full experience of the menu but found the menu available was very good value for money. flavours were great and the wine selection was very good. we weren't too impressed with out table location in the main restaurant but all in all i look forward to visiting again so i can experience the full menu.
The Lemon Sole Seafood restaurant allows you to select your fish and have it cooked your way. Lunch time ambience was lacking but I should like to visit again in the evening. Choosing the wine from the rack was great, less pressure than a wine list. Will visit again
Was in town on a last-minute business trip, and was looking for 'decent food, not far away, and an open table'.
Seymour's was better than expected. When you walk in, it definitely feels dated. Clientel skews older, and hotel guests. At least one couple appeared to be regulars.
Ordered the traditional pie, and it was well made and savory, and piping hot.
Our visit to Lemon Sole in Portsmouth was a little disappointing. It had all the right criteria - nice atmosphere, excellent idea of chosing your fish personally, reasonably priced wines but it just didn't quite work. The sauces were too "glutinous" - the fish would have been better either grilled, baked or fried with simple seasoning rather than trying to add bland sauces. A few "tweaks" and this could be a lovely restaurant - but not as it is at present..
We visited Lemon Sole Seafood Restaurant Portsmouth taking the 3-courses for £10 offer and we received a fair lunch at that price. Looking at the menus and special boards we felt that their prices are on the high side, nevertheless we have agreed that we will try it for a special occassion in the near future taking the full priced option. We felt that their wines are expensive with the house wine at £15. The service is casual and relaxed, as is the restaurant itself.
Certainly one of the best restaurants in the Portsmouth area. Starters were excellent: prawns on a crisp, aromatic puri; juicy, succulent mackerel served with a note-perfect devilled sauce. Mains were equally good: enjoy the parmesan-based topping on the fish pie! Accompanying vegetables were downright stingy in terms of portion size, although the garlic spinach was delicious. Don't expect service to be faultless, though. Think: 'Saturday lunch-time staff' disease. Overall: strongly recommended.
This is a very pretty resturant. The self service ordreing concept is a little strange but does give you a chance to see your fish before you order. The 2 for 1 deal did not give you much choice on the fish as there was only one option avaliable. However we did agree that we would like to go back and eat from the full menu
