Unlike some peoples reviews who either can't read (they have 7 vegetarian curries!) or whose standards are much higher than mine, we really enjoyed our dinner. Staff were friendly and helpful when we asked questions.
Second time eating here and not at all disappointed. Best pakora ever!
Amazing place. In my opinion, the best restaurant in Scotland.
When we are eating the staff was helpfull. Also when my wife said it was to hot for her, the offered an other meal. Very good and tastfull. (Indian can be hot, so that is our problem)
Nothing special would try somewhere else if I in the area again.
Nice but not write home. I would go back if heading to the Playhouse with friends.
Pre booked via Open Table for a Saturday night in November at 6.00.
Arrived on time, and the restaurant was busy. Our table was ready. There was only a pre-theatre menu on the table so I asked the waitress for the normal menu as it wasn't what we were wanting. She very polite and told me that the pre-theatre menu was all that was on offer at that time of the evening. I explained that I wasn't aware of that beforehand, and had I known then we would have not booked. She had a word with the manager who 'over-ruled the chef' and offered us the normal menu. We were back in business!
The food was very good, (poppadum's, pickles, chicken tikka, rogan josh, naan, special rice) and the staff were also very good (although we had to ask for water 3 times before getting it, only a minor niggle) and polite. Not a very 'up market' interior, but I would go back for the food and service alone.
Overall, not outstanding, but good value and I would return (after 7.00 though)
Picked this restaurant from reading reviews, not something that I normally do.
Menu not particularly intesting, starters ok.Main courses not so good.
Service ok, but then when main course delivered left with no cutlery for 5 minutes.
Not good in my book ,especially with the price that we paid.
The tarka dal was mind-blowing and the spinach was so well spiced it had us salivating! Totally the best Indian ever - and we lived in India!
A disappointing experience overall. Food was really bland, the bread especially was really thick and doughy (uncooked in the middle)- although portions are really generous. Not an authentic curry experience - wouldn't recommend
I booked a table for 12 in advance but some of my group were running late. Rather than ask us if we wanted to order food before the others arrived, staff kept asking us how long the others would be and I was at one point given a lecture about it which I found really patronising. It could have been approached differently without making me feel uncomfortable. For that reason I wouldn't recommend it for a large group even though the food was as amazing.
I booked a table using my hi life card and was extremely embarassed when it came to paying and I was told hi life cards were not accepted . I had even phoned on the evening and the person I spoke to verified Shezan took hi life cards. Even looking up the webside as proof Shezan was registered with hi life did not enough to persuade the manager standing looking at the evidence in front of him.Never again!
The food was okay. Chicken tastes a little reheated.
Service was just shocking. We waited for 1 hour for our food! & then it didn't even all arrive. Waited an extra 20 minutes for rice!! Rice! Which you'd expect to be ready and waiting to go in an Indian restaurant. By the time the rice came we had finished our curries. I was extremely disappointed. Would not recommend the Indian. Much better in Edinburgh
Is this an Indian Restaurant or a nightclub?
Arrived on time, seated quickly and drinks order taken. Offered menus where the owner has written a self congratulatory piece about themselves and how they are on a global expansion scheme.
The copy then goes on to say that they are wanting to create a 'Bollywood' theme which with Now 90 / Taylor Swift etc in the background at a very loud level is clearly a mismatch.
However, if you do like the music, visit the restrooms and the volume in there is deafening.
Food was good, all arrived at the same time and plenty of it!
Further drink service was poor/unacceptable. I asked three times for a drink that never came.
So, wouldn't rush back and would look for something more true to what it promises.
We booked our pre-theatre dinner for 5.30pm and just as well we did, the service was poor and we had to ask for more drinks and also our dessert, we were the only people in when we arrived and were quickly forgotten about when other customer's started to arrive, one of the waitresses just stood about in the middle of the room don't think she knew what she was supposed to be doing. Wasn't much of an atmosphere either wasn't like being in an Indian Restaurant.
Since we booked through open table, we had to wait for 5-10 mins before taken to our table. There were visitors who booked directly and came after us were given table straight away.
Food is ok, nothing remarkable and menu doesn't have too much of depth. Overall a good experience though.
Very tasty food at a very good price. The pre-theatre menu was the only menu offered & the service was a little too quick between courses but this was our first visit so we'll be prepared the next time!
Nice restaurant and friendly staff
We arrived 5minutes early and our table was ready and waiting very friendly staff and food fabulous will most definitely return
Everything was great, the only thing I'd point out is that there was a bit too much oil in the main dish meal/sauce.
It started well when we found we could reserve a table online. It was a cold, dark Sunday evening and nowhere was busy; however, the staff were expecting us and referred to us by name. The restaurant was spotless, the service was excellent, the staff were polite and despite being served by a number of them, there was obvious co-ordination between them. The food was excellent quality Indian cuisine and the plates were hot (nothing worse then cold plates when you're looking forward to a hot meal) and we were able to eat in comfort without having to shout (OK, worse then cold plates is ridiculously loud tuneless music that appeals only to the staff). After 2 pints of Cobra, I used their facilities before leaving the restaurant and even those were well appointed and clean. I have been to cheaper Indian restaurants, but given the overall service, ambience, quality of food and attention to detail, I think the extra was well worth it. I can't say whether the standards will be as good during busy periods, but I'll definitely be going back to give it a try.
Was in Edinburgh for the weekend with my wife and Shezan had been recommend by a friend.
The food was first class! Restaraunt was spacious and immaculate! Staff were attentive and friendly, couldn't ask for more.
Will probably go the 40 minute journey just for the Shezan,
Another fantastic meal here, with great service, excellent food, good variety and every dish cooked to perfection. And the beer wasn't half bad either! A longish wait for food, but well worth it, because it arrives freshly cooked and piping hot.
Placed next to the window, this was fine except it seemed a lot colder that we would have liked. Amazing food, would definitely recommend.
Second year in a row dining in shezan before attending the theatre. Food is fresh, flavourful and exceptional value. The staff are helpful, polite and professional. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean!
we booked the shezan resteraunt across from playhouse on line and had a lovely meal here the food is delicious and at a really great price pre theartre menu had lots to choose from well recommended
Back here again and the food is just as good. Pre-theatre 3 course menu for £14.95 is excellemt value. Staff are so friendly and attentive.
My mum, daughter, and I had a very enjoyable meal here before going to the theatre. The staff
were very friendly and made us feel very welcome and valued. The pre theatre, set menu had plenty to chose from and was very tasty with generous servings. The service was prompt but at no point did we feel rushed. All in all a very relaxed meal in a friendly atmosphere. We will definitely go back.
Well, I've wanted to come to Shezan since walking past one day & seeing they served MOVENPICK Swiss Icecream! This is the BEST icecream ever made & it is very elusive so to find it was being served in Edinburgh I was thrilled. So, I finally made a reservation for my friend & I one Saturday evening. We were greeted well enough & promptly shown to our table. However, we had approx. 3-4 different waiting staff attending our table over the course of our dinner so it was hard to know who exactly our server was! We were given a 'set menu' - no choice of any other, that was that. I was rather annoyed at this as I would rather be given the option to opt in to a set menu, not have it forced upon me. I ordered the chicken Korma which was fine but there was SO much sauce - way more sauce than chicken. When finished, one of the 3-4 waiting staff asked if we wanted coffee/tea but I requested that we have icecream. Our waiter then vanished without asking what flavour we would like but I did specify to another waiter earlier that I wanted Caramelita which I was told wasn't included in the set menu but I responded by saying I would pay extra as long as I could have the flavour I wanted. Then our waiter returned with one scoop of vanilla icecream - as soon as he placed the plate down I said 'No, no, no! This is wrong' but he proceeded to walk away & ignore me. This really ruined my evening - it was the one thing I wanted by coming to Shezan - to have Caramelita icecream like I had in Switzerland & I feel like I made my feelings clear about which kind I wanted but my words went unheeded. I would only come back here if it was possible to make a reservation for desserts only!
I cant recommend this restaurant enough in terms of the service. Very friendly attentive service.
Good food at a reasonable price.
Would eat here again.
My partner and I went along on Saturday night. We had 2 courses and were in and out with 45 minutes so had little time to enjoy the food, we were barely finished the starter when the main arrived. The food was rather bland and the service was very informal and not entirely enjoyable.
Won't be rushing back!
We had a lovely meal in the Shezan up until we wre waiting on our dessert but we were handed our bill before we got our dessert ,they took the bill away & after about another 15minutes arrived with our dessert no sooner had we eaten them the bill was back on the table ,okay it was a Saturday evening but we felt that we were being pushed out to make way for other people that were waiting for a table ,as we had already booked this table for our friends that we had not seen for a long time i really was a bit embaressed about the whole situation .
Mr Derek Stewart
This was our first visit and most certainly will not be the last. The food and service were fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the Jaipuri curry.
Fantastic food, great service and value for money in the centre of the city. What more could you ask for!
Excelent Indian cuisine, very good currys, also for vegetarians.
We came for our anniversary meal and weren't disappointed. First off we asked the waiter about some bits on the menu as my partner is lactose intolerant - he was extremely helpful, very knowledgable about the menu, had to nip off and ask the chef about one specific thing but was happy to do so nice and quick for us. Starters were fantastic, Keema Samosa and Chicken Pakora respectively were the best we'd had; and we both had Biryani dishes for mains. Mine was chicken, and the chicken was so perfectly cooked it fell apart as I ate, the rice and sauce perfectly spiced as requested, absolutely lovely. Partner had king prawn, didn't manage to finish but staff were happy to bag it for us. Highly recommended, a great night!
I would have preferred a choice of the full menu not just the pre theatre menu. Also we were asked by three different waiters for our drinks order within the space of two minutes when we just arrived.
We go out to dinner and we enjoy very much with a very good food and a good place, the taste us the grest friend of this restaurant , i will go back
Food was very good, however their booking system doesn't work. I've made the booking online for 12 people and received a confirmation via email few days before. The restaurant phoned me at 5pm on the day the table was booked for to tell me that they didn't have availability for 7pm - the time I've booked the table for. I was told that the system did not update details and the only time I could get a table for 8pm. If they had called meat least the day before it would have been ok, but 2 hours before? not acceptable as it was a group booking!
Good food but unreliable service!
Whenever I.m in Edinburgh I always go to Shezan for a meal. Friendly service, excellent food and reasonable prices. Will be back for soon for a shopping trip and
look forward to another wonderful meal. Thanks
