At Japanese-owned Shimogamo, we’re serious about your dining experience.
We source the freshest fish from Cornwall, use an original blend of seasoning and make our dashi stock on-site from scratch.
The secret to our delicious dishes is the inspiration taken from Kyoto-style Kyofu recipes. Our attention to aesthetics extends to the traditional Kutani tableware brought in especially from Japan - so your meal is a pleasure for your eyes too.
Shimogamo has a dedicated sushi counter, as well as spacious seats that offer a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere for you to indulge in popular dishes such as: sushi, sashimi, shabushabu, sukiyaki and yudofu.
Shimogamo is nestled in the calm of Primrose Hill, yet only a stone's throw from Camden.
First of all, this restaurant is worth visiting. But we’ve noticed before, and Thursday night was worse, that they need at least one more waiter/tress. However, the sashimi always tastes very good and fresh and is plentiful. We also had a very good sushi roll with crispy prawns at either end which was delicious. They need more than one choice of single glasses of wine - only one red and one white really isn’t enough! I do understand that there is an almost inexhaustible list of sakis but some people prefer wine. The menu is quite small - this is probably why the dishes are always reliable and fresh but it also means that one needs a longer time before returning.
Favourite Japanese restaurant in London, we go often.
Superb sushi and sashimi, lovely grilled teriyaki. Beautiful balance of flavours with subtle seasonings
The food was very nice and service good too. We had Sukiyaki and it was excellent. Just wish there was more. We ordered another beef dish and then sushi. Not sure if the portions were too small or if we were used to big portions.
The dessert was amazing. Overall a good experience. Seating was comfortable but not great
the food is very small portion with very high price and its not very good quality. The eel nigiri was nice but the tuna got this color looks like it's been tortured. The sukiyaki has two pieces of tofu, some cabbage and 4 mushrooms with eatable beef, it was salt enough for us to taste it the rest of the day. Overall not worthy to go a second time.
The ppl there were very friendly tho
Great authentic Japanese. Very fresh fish and good selection
The food is great however sushi selection is very limited.
All great - will definitely go back soon
The food was a little disappointing for the price tag. We didn't have any nigiri (which did look good) but what we did have a number of other dishes and weren't wow'd. The service was a bit lacking and the decor is in need of a fresh lick of paint but that wouldn't have been an issue if the food was really special. Sadly it didn't meet our high expectations.
This is the best Japanese restaurant in London ever, considering the quality and price.
They served an authentic but reasonable Japanese cuisine.
I took my kids and they really loved the food. Also they had a couple high chairs.
Thank you for amazing lunch!
We'll definitely visit again.
Excellent, authentic Japanese restaurant with a large varied menu. Sushi is fresh, tempura are delicate and the service is friendly and efficient.
I'm happy to come here again and again as it never disappoints...
Excellent cuisine, friendly and pleasant staff. Recommend!
Very good sushi at reasonable prices. Authentically Japanese. The lunch menu options are good value. The sashimi is very high quality.
The staff is always very polite, the food is amazing for those who wants to discover more than just sushi. I'd say that it is a really good traditional Japanese restaurant. Plus, they have an amazing selection of Sake. I totally recommend it !
The food is high quality and unique. The atmosphere is traditional japanese . The tables are far enough apart to feel private . The noise level is ok . A gem in camden . The best for north of Mayfair , worth the drive .
Great Japanese restaurant with minimal, stylish decor and friendly prompt service.
Interesting menu with a good selection beyond the classic sushi/sashimi which was refreshing for a Japanese dinner.
Gir veggie lovers, both the aubergines and the lotus roots were amazing authentic flavours. Highly recommended.
Very good and fairly priced will be back again.
Really nice food at a reasonable price comfortable seating and good service.
The only thing is when it gets to 2pm you get the distinct feeling that the restaurant is preparing to be closed as they were all packing up and cleaning and you get the hints that they would like you out ASAP.
Also I had wanted to make a booking for a birthday dinner for 8 people and was told can’t book table for the weekend which was not helpful
Wonderful atmosphere, typical japanese: very essential but very concrete and focused on the overall quality of food. We had a superb Sukiyaki dish, with exquisite ingredients. The dining room was very warm but quiet, and personnel was kind and discrete (again, all japanese qualities I do really appreciate). Would come again and definitely recommend to friends!
Excellent as always
It is always a pleasure to go to Shimogamo. The staff is very pleasant, the service is fast, the food is wholesome, very fresh, authentic, homely and delicious. The ambiance is relaxed, the noise level allows for intimate talks and the decor is clean, modern, simple and cozy. I love going there.
Brilliant food. loved every dish..
Wonderful variety of well cooked food. Everyone in the group was week served.
One of the best true Japanese restaurants in Europenfor a very affordable price. Don't hesitate, you're gonna love it!
Food is ok, nothing special but enjoyable. I think slightly over priced for what it is
It was lovely food but the portion was very small.
A great restaurant. The food is superb. Authentic, excellent quality. I would recommend, and certainly will visit again if in Camden.
Grab a cold Asahi beer, the warm mushroom salad was super, check out their Specials too.
Always good to find a very good restaurant. Try this one.
Went there for a Birthday lunch with couple of friends. Wanted to try japanese style hot pot so went for a Sukiyaki lunch set option. Super delicious! The plating is quite interesting, loved the little candle burner for the hot pot. Loved everything about it and definitely plan to introduce more friends to this gem
Very good food. Beef Sukuyaki was wonderful, sushi fresh and very nicely presented. Ambiance very casual so not a place for quiet intimate meal. Service very good although would have liked more time to finish sushi starter before mains were served. Friendly attentive staff. Will go back for sure.
Very good genuine Japanese restaurant. I will definitely go back again!
Probably the best Japanese restaurant in London!!!! Amazing flavoursome preparation and great sakes.
This my 3rd time here. Food as usual was very good but I was disappointed with the service this time. Some of the staff looked miserable and unfriendly. Sometime a welcoming smile would go a long way.
Excellent meal - the sushi is outstanding and the service was friendly and knowledgeable. The only drawback was that the tables in our section were too close together - tables had to be shuffled side to side to let people come in and out, which was a bit tiresome, and it felt like communal dining because we were so tightly packed. However, when the food is this good, we'll certainly be back. Delicious.
I used to like coming to this place but the prices have gone up (a meal for three was £130) where the quality wasn't much better than say Eat Tokyo, but damning the service was very lacking. They really need to pay attention to customers and check in on them more often
They never let us down. The fish is fresh and innovative. They don't try to do too much but they do everything very well. The sea bream and sea bass are special find. The Sashimi salad is quite unique and different presentation. The warm dishes are also special and I would look for the fish cheeks and salmon belly if they have it. We would be back daily if possible.
I went there to celebrate and was happy with the food, service and the environment. It is difficult in London to find a good Japanese hot pot, but this is the place where it is served and it was delicious!
Definitely, recommend it to friends.
Really good authentic Japanese food. Great for lunch or supper.
Consistently excellent sushi. Good sake selection.
Lovely quiet and elegant ambiance, warm and friendly service.Food is so delicate and delicious. Will go again.
