We source the freshest fish from Cornwall, use an original blend of seasoning and make our dashi stock on-site from scratch.
The secret to our delicious dishes is the inspiration taken from Kyoto-style Kyofu recipes. Our attention to aesthetics extends to the traditional Kutani tableware brought in especially from Japan - so your meal is a pleasure for your eyes too.
Shimogamo has a dedicated sushi counter, as well as spacious seats that offer a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere for you to indulge in popular dishes such as: sushi, sashimi, shabushabu, sukiyaki and yudofu.
Shimogamo is nestled in the calm of Primrose Hill, yet only a stone's throw from Camden.
Our group loved the food at Shimagamo. We had Tonkasu which was cooked well and tasted great. It was served with lovely salad and dressing, rice, miso soup and pickles. I would recommend this restuarant for a casual lunch. It was warm and cosy on a rainy day and the service was very welcoming. I have already booked a return lunch. I hear the sushi is also very good so I might try that next time. I'll work my way through the menus it is so tempting.
Once again a delight to have dinner at Shimogamo, all the food was perfectly executed, from the aubergine starter via the lemongrass sizzled pork to the amazing yellowtail cheek and salmon belly melting in your mouth! Staff was friendly, atmosphere chilled and fairly quiet. A must-try, and again!
Love this restaurant. Food delicious. Welcome and service warm and suitably attentive. So lucky to have this as a local Camden restaurant.
Very fresh delicious food and good value. And the place is not too noisy so perfect for a conversation. Service rather slow and a bit disjointed, and there is not much in the way of decor, but the food alone (especially for the price) is well worth coming for. Such a shame this restaurant is closing next month! Will try to come back before they close.
friendly service and delicious food always - we'll definitely be back
good restaurant. it will close in the middle of November 2019 so if you want to come, hurry!
it is genuine Japanese restaurant and real Japanese sake (alcohol ) is there.
very good sake selections and generally foods are very good. Sweets with Yuzu are excellent. only we didn't like that waiters took dishes without asking while we didn't finish the plate completely.
Nice selection of sushi and sashimi...The tempuras are great too....A must visit if your in Camden...slightly pricey service charge at the end, so be wary of that...But all in all really good food
Japanese friend recommended this restaurant and I - also Japanese- could say it is genuine Japanese food. bit expensive but the food itself is really good especially seafood, such as Sushi, boiled fish.
Prices are reasonable and service are good. We booked for 3 persons, but were seating in a quite small area, not felt spacious.
We all Enjoyed the specials on the menu especially the eel. Mid week, so it was quiet and the service friendly and efficient. They helped us through the menu where we weren’t sure... and washed down with lovely hot saki. Prices reasonable.
Absolutely stunning Japanese restaurant in Camden! Highly recommended - quality and freshness of food is amazing
Best quality fresh Japanese food
Amazing sushi and sukiyaki hot pot.
We always go with my partner for her birthday and it never dissapponts.
Fresh good quality sashimi and sushi. Would say it's better than most the other Japanese restaurants in London. Good and friendly service. Furniture and premises are showing their age, but not horrible.
I was a bit disappointed overall. We were only able to get a 6:15pm booking, and only 2 other tables were seated when we arrived, yet they wanted to put us right next to the front door (the worst table). Eventually they moved us but not without insisting. My meal was the only one that hadn’t arrived with the others (I ordered Salmon Teriyaki), and it was 30 minutes after the sushi was served. Everyone else had finished eating when mine arrived. There is no such thing as easily drinking tap water there, as every time, I had to ask to have my glass refilled. It was very expensive for what we ordered in such an unappealing room. There are really only 2 appealing tables, and those were already specifically reserved. The food was good, but there are so many other good Japanese restaurants in London for this price, that I probably won’t go back unless I need to eat in that particular area.
First of all, this restaurant is worth visiting. But we’ve noticed before, and Thursday night was worse, that they need at least one more waiter/tress. However, the sashimi always tastes very good and fresh and is plentiful. We also had a very good sushi roll with crispy prawns at either end which was delicious. They need more than one choice of single glasses of wine - only one red and one white really isn’t enough! I do understand that there is an almost inexhaustible list of sakis but some people prefer wine. The menu is quite small - this is probably why the dishes are always reliable and fresh but it also means that one needs a longer time before returning.
Favourite Japanese restaurant in London, we go often.
Superb sushi and sashimi, lovely grilled teriyaki. Beautiful balance of flavours with subtle seasonings
The food was very nice and service good too. We had Sukiyaki and it was excellent. Just wish there was more. We ordered another beef dish and then sushi. Not sure if the portions were too small or if we were used to big portions.
The dessert was amazing. Overall a good experience. Seating was comfortable but not great
the food is very small portion with very high price and its not very good quality. The eel nigiri was nice but the tuna got this color looks like it's been tortured. The sukiyaki has two pieces of tofu, some cabbage and 4 mushrooms with eatable beef, it was salt enough for us to taste it the rest of the day. Overall not worthy to go a second time.
The ppl there were very friendly tho
Great authentic Japanese. Very fresh fish and good selection
The food is great however sushi selection is very limited.
All great - will definitely go back soon
The food was a little disappointing for the price tag. We didn't have any nigiri (which did look good) but what we did have a number of other dishes and weren't wow'd. The service was a bit lacking and the decor is in need of a fresh lick of paint but that wouldn't have been an issue if the food was really special. Sadly it didn't meet our high expectations.
This is the best Japanese restaurant in London ever, considering the quality and price.
They served an authentic but reasonable Japanese cuisine.
I took my kids and they really loved the food. Also they had a couple high chairs.
Thank you for amazing lunch!
We'll definitely visit again.
Excellent, authentic Japanese restaurant with a large varied menu. Sushi is fresh, tempura are delicate and the service is friendly and efficient.
I'm happy to come here again and again as it never disappoints...
Excellent cuisine, friendly and pleasant staff. Recommend!
Very good sushi at reasonable prices. Authentically Japanese. The lunch menu options are good value. The sashimi is very high quality.
The staff is always very polite, the food is amazing for those who wants to discover more than just sushi. I'd say that it is a really good traditional Japanese restaurant. Plus, they have an amazing selection of Sake. I totally recommend it !
The food is high quality and unique. The atmosphere is traditional japanese . The tables are far enough apart to feel private . The noise level is ok . A gem in camden . The best for north of Mayfair , worth the drive .
Great Japanese restaurant with minimal, stylish decor and friendly prompt service.
Interesting menu with a good selection beyond the classic sushi/sashimi which was refreshing for a Japanese dinner.
Gir veggie lovers, both the aubergines and the lotus roots were amazing authentic flavours. Highly recommended.
Very good and fairly priced will be back again.
Really nice food at a reasonable price comfortable seating and good service.
The only thing is when it gets to 2pm you get the distinct feeling that the restaurant is preparing to be closed as they were all packing up and cleaning and you get the hints that they would like you out ASAP.
Also I had wanted to make a booking for a birthday dinner for 8 people and was told can’t book table for the weekend which was not helpful
Wonderful atmosphere, typical japanese: very essential but very concrete and focused on the overall quality of food. We had a superb Sukiyaki dish, with exquisite ingredients. The dining room was very warm but quiet, and personnel was kind and discrete (again, all japanese qualities I do really appreciate). Would come again and definitely recommend to friends!
Excellent as always
It is always a pleasure to go to Shimogamo. The staff is very pleasant, the service is fast, the food is wholesome, very fresh, authentic, homely and delicious. The ambiance is relaxed, the noise level allows for intimate talks and the decor is clean, modern, simple and cozy. I love going there.
Brilliant food. loved every dish..
