All cooked well, kangaroo was really nice. Price of champagne per glass was reasonable compared to other places we've been. Ambiance also good, not too dark and not too bright.
Absolutely terrific, terrific value for money, top class service, and in a great area.
When we arrived the restaurant was empty
And we were shown to not necessarily the best table for two. When the next couple arrived they were placed adjacent which was an encroachment in an otherwise void space. That apart, it was a good evening and the food was faultless.
Great food, Kangaroo is worth a try! Nice champagne cocktails and a very relaxed dining experience!
The service was very slow despite not appearing to be very busy. The food took an entire hour to come, this was blamed on the fact that we wanted one of the steaks cooked medium-well. We were offered complimentary olives to compensate this but later found them on the bill, didn’t mention this because it was my partners birthday and didn’t want the hassle. The lighting was far to high which did not create a very nice ambience and there was no background music for a long period of time, this did resume eventually but meant we could hear other people’s conversations . The staff were quite pleasant when we could get their attention but entirely out of their depth. Probably wouldn’t return.
We booked having not tried this restaurant before and planned to have the early bird menu. Initially we were only offered the a la carte menu and had to ask for the special menu. It was early 6.30pm so we were the only table in the restaurant. My starter was very nice, red pepper hummus , vegetable batons, bread and yogurt dip. My main was chicken which was lukewarm, the Mediterranean vegetables were diced and a small portion , more potatoes than vegetables. My two friends did not finish their main courses so can only assume they were not happy. It was rather too dark for my liking and the background music too loud and unnecessary in my view. We won't return.
Lovely place, but quite disappointed that one of the two vegetarian options wasn't available, leaving only one main course option. A bit behind the times with that I thought. Everything else was good though.
The food was first class.
We were sat at table next to toilets, it was very dark, we had to use torch from mobile phones to read menus.
We had to attract attention of waiter to order drinks when we first arrived.
I took my girlfriend to silk rooms on 16th feb. We had a lovely meal and a nice bottle of prosecco. We loved the atmosphere and our whole experience. Then the bill came. Our entire meal cost £93 and was well worth it apart from the service charge. I had no service really i asked for the bottle of prosecco to be on the table for arrival but it wasn't which isn't the end of the world. Then during our meal a guy came over snatched our glasses for a refill which wasn't needed because our glasses were basically full. This made me and my girlfriend feel a bit awkward and rushed if anything as If he was either trying to hurry us up for the next lot to be sat down or to make us drink quicker to buy more. The £8 service charge is ridiculous to be honest and should be scrapped because id rather tip someone than be forced into a payment which was NOT deserved.
Flat champagne, sent my first course back, inedible bitter scallops, main course plate was dirty underneath, a man stood next to me for 45 minutes calling reservations to confirm their bookings in a very loud voice. Stood for ages to use the ladies and noticed how dirty the skirting boards were! When the door finally opened it was a member of staff. Husband’s lamb shank for £24 looked like it came from Iceland, tiny ! Staff insisted on referring to us as ‘you guys, all through the meal and I felt I was in an American diner. It used to be lovely, now it has slipped dramatically.
Superb👌🏼, lamb especially recommended
Fantastic food, great atmosphere. Highly recommend.
Really great customer service! I wanted to book a table for 5 very last minute on Saturday night, at first there were no available tables for us to book via TripAdvisor, but I phoned the restaurant explaining that we had come all the way up from London and it was our last night and they went to great lengths to ensure that they could make room and find us a table. Once we got there, the staff were friendly and the food was great.
champagne and steak is the thing, but there are good fish and veggie options. Salad was lovely, and the seasonal veg was roasted roots, with green beans and asparagus. Desserts simple, but nicely done. All presented beautifully.
I think I was hoping for a little bit more glamour.... but maybe we need to pay more for that!
Silk room is good value, great food, good service.
An unexpected gift of amaretto shots makes us feel good about planning the next visit.
We have been eating at Silk Room every since it opened in 2005 (I think?) and have never had a bad meal here. The menu has remained constant (why change a good thing?) and so have the high quality food and great service.
If you fancy something different than the mass of chain restaurants flooding the city, like a wagu burger or some kangaroo, or just a good old steak/piece of Salmon then you cannot go wrong here. I absolutely love the decor and ambience here, it reminds me of the 1950s.
My only advice is go steady on the fabulous Champagne cocktails because they are absolutely gorgeous and I always leave a bit squiffy.
Thank you David and team for not changing a thing and always looking after us. One of the best restaurants in Newcastle.
My partner and I had dinner at The Silkroom for his birthday/our anniversary and the staff were very friendly and upbeat. The food and bevarages were absolutely perfect. So delicious and morish. However, the prices are quite expensive. The evening we spent there was wonderful. Although, they failed to mention the service charge on our receipt was optional, to us, this seemed a little bit cheeky. Overall, I highly recommend The Silkroom for dates and anniversaries as it has such a romantic setting and it was a lovely night.
Really beautiful starter and perfectly cooked steak for main. Lovely evening.
Absolutely loved this restaurant. Only things that bugged me was the very loud man sat behind me. When trying to have a romantic meal with my husband all I could hear was him! Tables are very close together.
The other thing that also bugged me I was really looking forward to a desert asked for a menu and 20 minutes later we still didn’t get one so we paid and left!
Otherwise was a great restaurant
Overall this is a lovely restaurant. The food was good but nothing outstanding, although my boyfriend thought Kobe beef was amazing. I had steak which was slightly over done for how I had asked and I ordered side of king prawns which was £4.95 and I only got 2 prawns! It’s a shame cause these 2 things let my experience down. Lovely restaurant, staff and service was very good.
We went for date night and it was perfect for this. Quiet and nice ambience.
Great food and experience!
We booked for New Year’s Eve on recommendation
Pre ordered food earlier by phone off menu
Food mediocre at best
This restaurant is now quite tatty and in need of some refurbishment
The glass lampshades have not seen a polish/ clean in a very long time
The windows greasy and need cleaning desperately
The whole place needs some tlc
Service was awful .. having to wait for drinks
staff lack of uniform and looked untidy
Will not be returning
Good food & ambiance, good service.
Really enjoyed taking my girlfriend here the other day as it’s her favourite restaurant. However I requested a rose on the table for her and it was overlooked. Other than that great food and friendly service.
Amazing food, incredible service. One of the best meals I've had. Highly recommended this place. Kangaroo steak is incredible .
Service and food was great, will go back again. Sunday night was quite but still enjoyed.
Fantastic food - loads of GF options. Wine devine- lovely warm welcome- looked after well but not over powering.
Absolutely rubbish food! The carrot and parsnip soup tasted like canned soup and the wagyu burger could have easily been any average Angus burger. The quality of the food doesn’t reflect the price!
Although, they do very good red wine. The Pinot Noir - New Zealand is worth every sip and penny!
Being Xmas restaurant was very busy service not as good as usual but to be fair staff coped well
Great place and lovely food. Friendly staff. Spot on.
Amazing food! Would recommend to anyone. Staff very friendly. Some decor wasn’t to my taste but still a fantastic setting
Good food staff lovely but not a busy time. Also quite cold
Food good ambience good service a bit slow to start but then good
One of the best steaks we have ever had. Great service and ambience. Definitely recommend and will visit again
Great all round only thing I would criticise is that the tables are a bit close together so you can feel a bit cramped if it’s busy. Massively helpful and friendly staff.
You cannot have a restaurant with a single toilet. I paid too much to be waiting 10min to wash my hands before I eat. I'd expect this from a train station, not a restaurant serving a £10 glass of champagne.
I booked this restaurant to dine with some good friends we don't live local so relied on the website and hoped i had chosen well. The name of this restaurant suggested to me that it was a place to ... drink in a champagne bar then go for dinner in the restaurant afterwards, so it was a big let down when we walked in, you could think you had walked into a small takeaway restaurant with a tiny bar there was no bar seating at all. The staff were absolutely fine and friendly but the fact was there was no where to sit pre-dinner so we ended up in a trendy new bar / cafe around the corner. We did consider cancelling our reservation however we did go back for dinner and the food was good.
We went on a Saturday night and as it is quite a small room the large party of birthday revellers did disturb us initially. However they left and we were able to enjoy a wonderful meal , in peace. There were six of us and every one was impressed by the quality of the food. The service was very good too. Would return but perhaps midweek or at lunchtime.
Amazing food (scallops are the best I’ve tasted) and fabulous service.
I have eaten at silkroom multiple times the first time I ate here was probably around a year ago. Every time I have visited again since then it is slowly rolling down hill. Quality of food. Even flavouring and proportion sizes. The lamb as a main course was what I ordered the first time I went and it was beautiful I think that may be the only good thing on the menu..
I booked the table for a special family occasion and it was a delightful experience for everyone concerned. I would definitely recommend the Silk Room , apart from not having cutlery made in Sheffield I could not find fault with it! Well done, we shall return.
