Lovely, old school pub. Staff are very funny and friendly. Food was delicious with big portions. Was quiet at start of lunch but got very busy around 1. Make sure you book if you want a table
Just very good, solid British pub food with all the needed trimmings:Steak and Real Ale pie, Roast beef and Yorkies, Bubble and Squeak, Cumberland sausage ... delish!
Leaving perfect rating as apology for not making my reservation. I'm sure if would have been perfect anyway.
Superb food, wonderful old-school atmosphere, friendly staff.
Simpsons never fails in its service and food. An institution. The stewed cheese is a must.
Lunchtime visit to this historic restaurant. However, we had to share a small booth with three very loud (and swearing) business men who made little space for us to settle. This was particularly annoying as two other booths were vacant when we arrived. Combined these events spoiled our experience entirely. That said the waiting staff were very friendly and the food was hearty fair indeed, so we would return, but only on the proviso that our party would be sized to warrant a booth to ourselves.
Excellent food and service!
Well done the Tavern!
Tremendous steak and kidney pie and chips
Older than the United States of America, Simpson’s Tavern is a hidden gem in the heart of the city of London. Mix with Bankers and Highwaymen. You almost expect to bump into Edmund Blackadder and be served some of Mrs Miggens’ pies.
Bloody good English grub!
If you like traditional English fare at affordable prices in an historic City of London location served by friendly staff in a quirky old school atmosphere, this is the place for you. I've been eating here for years and always enjoy the experience with friends. Why not also take in The Jamaica Inn and/or The George & Dragon for additional liquid refreshment which are just next door to the restaurant.
I have visited Simpson’s many times it was very quiet service was timely and the waiter attentive
Wine was ok food disappointing liver and bacon. Was tough and bubble and sweat overdone starters were ok we all had prawn cocktail
The lunch was cheerful as old friends reunion
Very friendly staff upstairs. Straightforward and freshly cooked British food. And Sharpes beer. Love it.
A dependable classic. Convivial, hospitable, fun, atmospheric and always delicious.
Great sausage!and loved the dining experience
It's not fine dining, but if you want good hearty pub food and wine or beer and don't mind sharing a table (Oktoberfest-style) then it's a nice place to be
Typical English fare, served in an authentic Dickensian environment with great service.
Excellent service, nice atmosphere in this pub. Only one vegetarian main option but you don't go here for that! A nice hearty veggie pie would have been a nice alternative option (maybe that's on a winter menu though) but all of the food was delicious!
Hilarious waiter who was very knowledgeable about meat and sausage traditions!! ;)
A fun old time pub with great food and brilliant service!
I take every opportunity to lunch at Simpsons Tavern - with friends, family, business colleagues. The food and service never fail - tasty, satisfying portion very well cooked, fun service, great atmosphere - even if Nigel Farage also eats there.
A great venue which is hidden away in the heart of the city.
Staff always friendly and like a joke and lots if friendly banter.
Food always excellent and good value for money.
My guest was a no-show - but the staff were very nice to me and even had a chat with me. I'm a regular and will continue to be.
Staff seemed very busy when we arrived but we were made to feel very welcome. There was a short wait in a fairly cramped area on the first floor while dishes were being served to others but very soon we were shown to a table and were perusing the menu. The table was already occupied by two others but the arrangement seemed to give a nice ambience just as you might expect in a typical Parisian bar/restaurant. To complete the London 'experience' though, a pianist played traditional melodies. Many dishes are served with a 'traditional' sausage and you can also sample lager and ale produced for Simpsons. We had a very good lunch at Simpson's and would definitely return for more.
Simpsons has great character both in respect of the building itself and the staff. It offers good old fashioned service spiced with some humour and excellent food. My favourite main is the Edwardian pork chop which never ceases to please. They are large, succulent and tender.
I would highly recommend Simpsons for a good meal with plenty of atmosphere.
Attended with American friends to show them that we have restaurants older than their country. Simpson's never disappoints, superb as always
I’ve been eating here for nearly 40 years.....and I keep coming back.....which strongly suggests they have a damn good formula!!!! It is as authentic as it can be.... enjoy the experience!!!
Great food - superb service, perfect setting and good pricing.
A quality afternoon with great craic from the staff and a fine stewed cheese to finish with.
Fabulous traditional English food with a varied menu and lots of choices that you don't find in many other places. The service was efficient, polite and helpful. A great spot for a good meal.
Great historic building, great staff, and great good-value food. We went for lunch and it has a wonderfully welcoming, busy vibe, full of smiling waiters - all of whom, rather quirkily, appear to have impressive beards. Lots of traditional English dishes (which you rarely see on a menu these days) done very well. This place has been here since before the 19th century, hidden down its medieval alleyway off Cornhill, and in the old days it would probably have been full of exclusively men diners - these days it is still has a predominantly white male clientele, which could make some female diners or people of colour inwardly hesitate as they walk in, but it quickly became apparent that everyone was equally welcome whatever their race, gender or indeed dress-sense. I can't recommend this place enough.
I have also been for breakfast - their full-English is amazing, but the vibe is very different then - much quieter - great for a solo diner looking for some me-time with the newspaper and a fortifying start to the day. A word of warning though - after their breakfast, you won't need lunch.
I haven’t eaten here for over 20 years, when I worked in the city. I eat with these guys about five times a year and have done for over ten years. We use many places around London. We were not disappointed. Excellent.
Great place! Loved the pie, loved the warm and friendly service, loved the beautiful old dinning room. Will be back.
Perfect place for s bit of old city style great service great fun
Always get the sausage!
Well worth a visit. Good wine with simple English food. Really nice old building in the heart of the city with very old wooden interior. Staff are great.
What more can be said, great old school chop house, fantastic service, quality food
Always a brilliant lunch at Simpsons. The stewed cheese on it's own is worth coming for.
Business lunch for 5 on old pews, great food and service as always ..thanks
The original London chop house and still the best. First class service and great food
Booked the day before for a restaurant space upstairs which was the one previous experience I had and enjoyed.
Upon arrival five minutes ahead of booking time the staff had no idea we had a booking and informed us no more would be admitted upstairs to the restaurant.
We were then sat downstairs at a mixed table. Shortly after we decided to leave and go elsewhere as it was quite an unpleasant setting.
No actual criticism of the food as we had none, however unable to describe this on previous page.
Simpson’s is a good venue from previous experience and that is why I selected it and booked in advance. The restaurant not being organised on the day was disappointing, perhaps a one off. Fortunately it was a social engagement and it wasn’t a problem to stroll ten minutes to Boisdales. I would probably not now book to take a client as this would have been embarrassing and probably little time to recover the situation.
Hopefully the restaurant can improve on organisation, clearly very busy, however if people book and arrive on time it is not really acceptable to disappoint.
If there are unforeseen circumstances that is fine, but it should not be the customers job to rebrief staff. A simple apology would have gone a long way to resolving the situation. In our circumstance we could have had a drink next door and returned once space was available.
In professional circumstances that would not normally be an option hence my reticence to rebook under that situation.
I suggest taking a more proactive approach to booking and management rather than relying on third party websites of which the staff seemed to have little understanding.
Love the old-school ambiance of this place, and conveniently located close to The Jamaica Wine Bar. Chump chop was good, but the fish and chips were decidedly greasy.
As always, just perfect. First rate service too. Highly recommended.
