Simpsons Tavern is Londons oldest Chophouse. Located amongst the charming alleyways at the centre of the City financial district. Built way back in 1757, the tavern retains much of its olde worlde charm and original features, especially in its thoroughly British menu featuring Devilled Kidneys to start, followed by great Steaks from the Grill Menu or Steak & kidney pie and, most vital of all, some good old-school spotted dick and custard. Naturally, it is almost always filled with City workers during the week fuelling their stomachs and mind for another round of money-making.

My guest was a no-show - but the staff were very nice to me and even had a chat with me. I'm a regular and will continue to be.

Staff seemed very busy when we arrived but we were made to feel very welcome. There was a short wait in a fairly cramped area on the first floor while dishes were being served to others but very soon we were shown to a table and were perusing the menu. The table was already occupied by two others but the arrangement seemed to give a nice ambience just as you might expect in a typical Parisian bar/restaurant. To complete the London 'experience' though, a pianist played traditional melodies. Many dishes are served with a 'traditional' sausage and you can also sample lager and ale produced for Simpsons. We had a very good lunch at Simpson's and would definitely return for more.

Attended with American friends to show them that we have restaurants older than their country. Simpson's never disappoints, superb as always

Simpsons has great character both in respect of the building itself and the staff. It offers good old fashioned service spiced with some humour and excellent food. My favourite main is the Edwardian pork chop which never ceases to please. They are large, succulent and tender.

I would highly recommend Simpsons for a good meal with plenty of atmosphere.

Fabulous traditional English food with a varied menu and lots of choices that you don't find in many other places. The service was efficient, polite and helpful. A great spot for a good meal.

Great historic building, great staff, and great good-value food. We went for lunch and it has a wonderfully welcoming, busy vibe, full of smiling waiters - all of whom, rather quirkily, appear to have impressive beards. Lots of traditional English dishes (which you rarely see on a menu these days) done very well. This place has been here since before the 19th century, hidden down its medieval alleyway off Cornhill, and in the old days it would probably have been full of exclusively men diners - these days it is still has a predominantly white male clientele, which could make some female diners or people of colour inwardly hesitate as they walk in, but it quickly became apparent that everyone was equally welcome whatever their race, gender or indeed dress-sense. I can't recommend this place enough.
I have also been for breakfast - their full-English is amazing, but the vibe is very different then - much quieter - great for a solo diner looking for some me-time with the newspaper and a fortifying start to the day. A word of warning though - after their breakfast, you won't need lunch.

I haven’t eaten here for over 20 years, when I worked in the city. I eat with these guys about five times a year and have done for over ten years. We use many places around London. We were not disappointed. Excellent.

Booked the day before for a restaurant space upstairs which was the one previous experience I had and enjoyed.

Upon arrival five minutes ahead of booking time the staff had no idea we had a booking and informed us no more would be admitted upstairs to the restaurant.

We were then sat downstairs at a mixed table. Shortly after we decided to leave and go elsewhere as it was quite an unpleasant setting.

No actual criticism of the food as we had none, however unable to describe this on previous page.

Simpson’s is a good venue from previous experience and that is why I selected it and booked in advance. The restaurant not being organised on the day was disappointing, perhaps a one off. Fortunately it was a social engagement and it wasn’t a problem to stroll ten minutes to Boisdales. I would probably not now book to take a client as this would have been embarrassing and probably little time to recover the situation.

Hopefully the restaurant can improve on organisation, clearly very busy, however if people book and arrive on time it is not really acceptable to disappoint.

If there are unforeseen circumstances that is fine, but it should not be the customers job to rebrief staff. A simple apology would have gone a long way to resolving the situation. In our circumstance we could have had a drink next door and returned once space was available.

In professional circumstances that would not normally be an option hence my reticence to rebook under that situation.

I suggest taking a more proactive approach to booking and management rather than relying on third party websites of which the staff seemed to have little understanding.

Love the old-school ambiance of this place, and conveniently located close to The Jamaica Wine Bar. Chump chop was good, but the fish and chips were decidedly greasy.

Simpson's Tavern is an experience! Original 1750's seating and tables downstairs and the hubub of the regulars make it cosy and unique. The food is traditional English fare with regular daily specials, all reasonably priced and served by wonderful waitresses who have been with Simpsons's for between 26 and 40 years. The Edwardian pork chop, liver and bacon and roast beef are all good.....but the gravy could have been a bit tastier. Their stewed cheese to be poured over toast is a speciality. Highly recommend it.

The food is excellent. Best beef ale pie I have ever eaten. The staff were all polite and friendly and seated us straight away. The service was excellent and a good London atmosphere while eating our meal.
The building had lots of traditional character. I will recommend the Tavern to family and friends.

Americans, don’t let the menu scare you off! We had an authentic London experience for lunch in between touring. While there are many traditional items on the menu including Chump Chops (ha ha what is that anyway? our kids had great fun just looking over the menu!!) the food was excellent and our server, Kristian, couldn’t be more patient with all of our questions and handling food allergy requests. Although there was not much offered gluten free except the grilled items, the Grilled chicken served with lemon & arugula was very good and the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach were delicious. The cottage pie, steaks & vegetable dish also got a lot of raves from our picky party!

Traditional English fayre, cooked on the premises and fresh. Seriously delicious and the portions are more than generous. The staff are really welcoming and friendly. The actual building is, in my view, a hidden, London gem. The benches on the top floor are from times gone by and still have the bowler hat racks. Be prepared to share a table with strangers and sit close to who you're dining with. Well worth the visit/lunch on all accounts and I've been going there for years. I just hope the building is listed too.

An institution. It's not the most comfortable, the food's sui generis, but the staff are wonderful, the wine and beer are fantastic, and it's reasonably priced. If you want to see what the old City was like, and see some old City folk too, this is the place.
