The service was friendly if a little slow, drinks ok price wise. Food was typically American style but not very good. I won’t be going back.
Good place pre-theatre, but the choice of happy hour cocktails is really limited and we ended up getting a couple of bottles of wine! Don't go there thinking they have loads of choice!
Also, I had mentioned it was my friend's 50th birthday but there was no mention of it during the period of time we were there.
Excellent pre theatre restaurant especially for groups. Large portions, delicious food.
The staff were nice as well as ambience. Visited to celebrate a friend completing the marathon. Found that the food menu was very basic and a bit boring. If we were not tired we would have left.
Apart from the food menu, everything went well.
Not as good as I remembered it, not as good as in the past. Food was ok but not great. Service was the same.
Enjoyable meal, at a reasonable price. The staff were friendly and accommodated us for a drink before our dinner booking.
Good atmosphere , food and the service was very good and attentive
Great value meal before the theatre . We informed the staff we were going to a show and they turned a good meal around in time. It was a limited menu which you would expect but the food was still adequate and wholesome.
Victor our waiter was very good looking in on us on a regular basis. The food was good and plentiful and just what we needed prior to watching our show at Drury Lane which was an easy 10 min stroll away.
All in all very good
Food was terrible, no vegan options generally very disappointing in every aspect
Great place for a cocktail and a bite to eat. Super place for a pre-theatre dinner; catching up with pals over a cocktail or a light bite and a beer after work. Not to underestimated.
Average meal Service ok Music loud so need to pick table away from speakers
We arrived at the restaurant and there was no one at the desk so we walked downstairs to the restaurant floor. Again we wasn't greeted by anyone. We had to go to the bar and wait for someone to serve us before telling him we actually had a reservation. We waited quite a long time to be served despite the restaurant being particularly empty for a Saturday evening, and the waitress really didn't seem like she wanted to be there to be honest. We waited for our starters to come and they looked like that had sat for some time at the hot plate (as you can always tell) 3 of us received our food and had finished by the time the other persons starters finally arrived. We waited around half hour after we'd eaten for the plates to be removed despite our waitress passing by the table several times and the restaurant still not being very busy. When our mains arrived one person in our party ordered a hotdog which was rock solid. We spoke to the manager who told us that the cooking process of boiling the sausage made it very hard to eat (not realising one of our party is a sous chef who knows very well that the meat wouldn't go like that with boiling and was obviously grilled and burned!) the manager was very polite and apologised then offered to get a steak knife to cut it!! We asked if it would be possible to change meals as even if we could cut it, the hotdog was burned and inedible! He was very quick to get us a replacement meal, which was fresh and tasty. When we left, we were stopped by another diner who had had the same problem with her food being over cooked and poor service so it seems we weren't the only ones! All in all a disappointing meal at a place we had wanted to visit for some time and won't be going back!
Had booked this weeks ago as a special trip to London with my daughter. How disappointed were we! We arrived and were put at a table at the back of the restaurant away from other people. The server then forgot about us and after 15 mins, I had to call someone over. Food disappointing too. Would never go back
We wanted a pre threatre dinner. We arrived at 5.15 having booked via Open Table to be told we had no booking. The place was nearly empty the staff member grudgingly gave us a table. The place is tired and lacks any atmosphere.
We were told the place was great for steak. That was a mistake. Expensive for a meal that looked lost on the plate.
I really enjoyed my birthday dinner here. It wasn’t a very busy evening but we were ok with that because we didn’t feel like we had to be quite.
I was slightly disappointed in the service as I thought it was a bit slow even though it was pretty empty.
But I loved the vibe of the place and the cocktails.
Although the menu is quite limited there was enough to choose from. The service was good and staff friendly. A good place to get a quick bite pre-theatre.
It was 10 minutes before someone greeted us and took us to a table. Had to catch someone's eye to take our drinks order, we ordered our food then too. Could see that there was a problem with the service, a lot of apologising was going on. We had booked to eat before theatre, only ordered one course because we didn't think there would be time for anything more. The food was ok, but the evening was spoilt by the worry that we wouldn't be out in time. Would not go back again as a pre-theatre meal.
It was really good! Amazing food
We had booked for a post matinee meal , so it worked well in that respect - the restaurant was quiet, as it happened , so no booking required but it's nice to be sure . Atmosphere a little lacking as a result of low numbers , but service very good with all waiters and bar staff very friendly . Unfortunately, my chargrilled chicken was underdone- it was crunchy to the bite , and I had some stomach discomfort the next day , which seemed a bit coincidental . I should have said something in the restaurant I guess , but like many people, complaining can feel embarrassing sometimes whilst in the building . The rest of my meal and that of my wife was fine , but I would probably eat elsewhere another time for a greater choice of menu .
On previous visits , the place has been a bit busier and buzzer , but that was at different times , and previous Christmas visits have been very good .
Meeting friends after ages
I originally came with my family of four but after going to the theatre in the afternoon but after meeting an old friend and her children we invited her to our booking at smollenskys. Firstly they accommodated our larger group with ease and no hassle at all. Our waiter was extremely helpful and polite throughout our visit even answering the repeated questions from our Group of children. The food was really good and the children's meals were plentiful. I've been past this place many times but this was the first time inside and it looks amazing. Large dining and Bar areas and a piano for entertainment. Will definitely visit again without the kids
We could not fault this restaurant: friendly service was excellent (and with a smile), food was good and ambience. Overall, we had a lovely pre-theatre meal. Would definitely recommend.
Good honest food, relaxed atmosphere and convenient location for Somerset House
Had a fantastic time, food was of an excellent standard and the steak was cooked perfectly as we requested. The service was second to none and we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Will definitely visit again if I'm in the area.
I loved the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The salmon was amazing and the advocado salsa. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable and great section.
Our early dinner, pre Theatre choice was perfect. The service was very attentive. The very friendly staff made sure we had everything we needed and even fixed our wobbly table before we had a chance to ask. Great burger too.
Food came out horrible as the Calamari was too chewy
Burger looked like a frozen patty and my friends steak
A ribeye was 1/2 inch thick.
Better food in pub this afternoon
Service was very fast and Alex our waiter was most friendly and attentive. When he found out we were going to the theatre he dealt with us swiftly so we didnt miss our play.
I enjoyed my meal especially my warm chocolate brownie!!
Had the three course pre-theatre set menu which was really great value for money as it also came with a glass of prosecco. The portions were on the slightly smaller side but the food was good. Nothing especially exciting on the menu but reliable nonetheless. Service was attentive and friendly which was great and everything came very quickly which was good given our time constraints for the theatre.
Service was excellent with staff very accommodating. Cocktails were 'spot on.' I was a bit disappointed, however, with the change of the pre/post theatre (set menu) so opted for a main course instead. This might put me off in the future as I loved the old menu. Food was good though.
I've eaten here many times over the years, and in the past had extremely positive experiences. This sadly was only an ok experience overall.
We had Dinner prior to a show. Food was very good. Staff very friendly.
The overall experience was good but we did suffer with slow and inaccurate service in a restaurant that was less than half full. Incredible value for money, especially the drinks. The staff were really friendly and helpful just unfortunately quite slow.
Nice welcome, not to busy early Friday evening, pre theatre meal . Service was good and we would book again.
Great venue, the staff are friendly and efficient, but the menu and food were poor. I ordered the fish and chips - the fish was bland with more batter than fish and the chips were hard. The women at the next table sent her chicken back because it was cold in the middle. I used to go to this restaurant regularly in the past when the menu and food were much better. I'll go back to the bar, but not for food.
Very disappointed. I booked SMOLLENSKY'S based on the web site write up and it's location for a meet up with friends visiting from overseas. We arrived a little late and the moment I walked down the stairs to the basement restaurant and heard loud music blaring and drunken laughter I knew I'd made a mistake! It was decidedly down-market. The food was average (and cold), it was difficult to catch our server's eye to order and the ambience was non existent.
We've been going to Smollensky's on the Strand for over 25 years. I even had my hen night here 23 yrs ago! It had been a while since our previous visit & going on the service on Saturday night it may well be our last! The service was extremely slow, 2 of the beers we'd ordered weren't available which is inexcusable at 6 pm on a Saturday evening! The fish cake starter was very small, my husbands mushroom starter wasn't particularly warm & the chicken which I ordered with my salad was really dry. The whole experience was extremely disappointing. We just felt it had lost that sparkle which we'd always enjoyed about the restaurant in the past.
Went with 8 other friends for a get together. Setting is quite nice, what we were expecting at an American diner restaurant. Service was a little slow, granted it was a Saturday evening.
From what everyone was saying the beef burgers were good and also the roast chicken was very nice. I myself and my partner on the other hand got a grilled chicken burger and a grilled chicken Caesar salad, and the chicken was horribly over cooked on both. Even the BBQ butter milk grilled chicken strips were over cooked. Couldn't distinguish if it was chicken or pork because it was so tough.
Won't definitely not recommend getting anything on the menu which is grilled chicken breast as evidently they cannot get it right. Everything was okay though
food was great apart from one of our steaks had a lot of gristle. But they were really great and took the cost off.
