Disappointed by the environment inside. I understand the more relaxed positioning of this versus other Social group restaurants but this was done in a way that meant we left very disappointed. The tables were no more than 30cm apart and our entire conversations were shared as were the couple next to ours with one another. It was impossible to avoid this and this led to a very disappointing experience. Some of the larger group tables would probably be ok but I would avoid booking this in a group of 4 or less.
For a waiter to serve the middle table of 3 x 2 seat tables he had to squeeze between our table and the adjacent table meaning we constantly had a view of the back of their trousers next to our drinks and food... not the premium experience I would expect from this restaurant or for the amount spent on food
The meat was extremely tasty and cooked perfectly but the chips with the steak had almost no taste at all and I have had better from some high street chains. Other parts of the food were very good but again it was hard to enjoy with the tables being so tightly packed in. It meant we never fully relaxed and were happy to eat and go which is not what I had wanted for a dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday.
The noise levels were high but this was not a problem and forms part of the restaurant's positioning but how crowded it felt did not fit with the price tag.
Service was ok but again not anything above what you would experience at 99% of other restaurants.
If it wasn't for the Jason Atherton name and reputation I do not think this restaurant could get away with charging anything close to, or deserve to be able to charge anything close to, the prices it does as the overall execution is not befitting of this.
We needed to make the theatre and the staff was superb at making sure everything arrived quickly. We really enjoyed the experience!
The food was great and the cocktails well worth it. A relaxed place.
Hm hard to review. Service team was very friendly and suprised me for my birthday. Food good/okay but far away from expected Michelin Star standard. Same for ambience and audience. Extremely noisy.
Superb pre-theatre menu. We loved it and will go again when we having more time to enjoy the other menus!
Food super yummy, lively atmosphere and a beautiful space.
We had the pre theatre menu which was just right. The service was impeccable and the quality of the food was right up there as a Michelin star restaurant should be. Portions were just right and the Carafe of red perfectly acceptable. Yes it is noisy which we knew before we booked but in the early evening it really was just a nice buzz. Hope we return soon.
The food was quiet good. For us the noise level was too high. It was nearly impossible to talk to each other without shouting. Because of that I wouldn’t go their again.
Absolutely outstanding. We had the pre-theatre set menu and both courses were exceptional. Especially the cod! Would highly recommend for a group of friends. Great ambiance.
Loved the food, the atmosphere and the kindness of the service!
The food was great, the decor and design of the space was spectacular, but it was very loud. I think it’s down to the minimalism of the decor. I would still highly recommend this place but be prepared to constantly say “sorry I cannot hear you” to your table mates.
This place is outstanding and a credit to the entire team that make it so. Wonderful food abs service.
We ate a London Restaurant week fixed menu. The food was delicious . My only criticism was that on the Halibut course the accompanying vegetables were all similar wet texture and their was nothing on the plate that was dry or crunchy to balance the dish, I was yearning for something dry on there.
Saying that, the fish as perfectly cooked.
Fabulous as always. Our third visit, and the food and wine were superb. Any London restaurant this full early on a Monday evening must be doing something right.
Excellent value lunch menu and wonderful staff
Came here for a birthday after a pleasant meal a couple years ago. Unfortunately it was a very different experience this time.
Service was disorganised from the moment we got in with no one really sure what was going on. We were sat wedged in between two other couples (no privacy). Quality of the food was ok but definitely overpriced.
Would not come again. The potential for a nice evening was there but had been let down due to poor execution. Expected much better service and for the food to be more than slightly above average given the Michelin star
The Social Eating House is in a small and very interesting old building with slightly industrial but cosy decor. The staff are efficient and friendly and make you feel as ease immediately. You would expect the food to be stunning from a Michelin starred Jason Atherton restaurant and is does not disappoint. We had an absolutely perfect evening.
We arrived 30 minutes late for our pre-theatre dinner due to crazy tube delays but the Social Eating House was very gracious and honoured our booking even though it was then past the pre-theatre menu time slot. Meal was absolutely delicious and Dino gave us dessert off their a la carte to share instead of the pre-theatre ones. Lovely evening and left with a little cake as a Wedding Anniversary gift. Couldn’t fault it.
Fine dining but funky for a Friday night out! Amazing cocktails, stunning food flavour combinations and an awesome value set menu. Really impressed.
Service was very slow and the ambiance was too loud/noisy - we could not hear each other talk as other guests were shouting. Too many other great restaurants in London - will not go back.
We both had the hake and it was melt in the mouth quality. As it was late we decided on one course but as the portions are relatively small I wish we had had starters as they looked fantastic.
Very slow service. Table cramped. Food quality good but staff gave impression of being uninterested in customer experience.
Have eaten here a few times and rated 5 stars. Couldn't do that tonight. Waited almost an hour before our order was taken, and another before food arrived. Seemed like too few wait staff for the number of covers. 20 minutes for water. 40 for wine. Unfortunate really. Food was excellent but if this is the way it's going it has likely had its day.
Food was fabulous but service was surprisingly poor. We were given virtually no attention and had to ask to get the wine list, ask to be able to order aso. Very strange and not at all living up to the fantastic culinary level which was truly sensational! They can do much better service-wise!
Ordered drinks when we arrived but food arrived before we had our drink and it sat in the corner on a tray for some time whilst our drinks were made. Issue raised with main course and no real acknowledgement. Having dined at numerous Michelin starred restaurants including Pollen street social, I feel that this one fell short of normal standard.
Booked Social Eating House as we're big fans of Jason Atherton and have visited several of his restaurants previously.
Ambience was ok but the music was too loud for our liking.
Food started well, both starters were delicious and we had high hopes for the rest of the meal. My main was a disaster though, everything was over seasoned. The steak came with a peppercorn sauce that was unpleasant, the steak was good quality but slightly too salty, the duck fat chips were good but the salad that accompanied the dish tasted way too salty. Reported this to the staff who apologised but nothing was done to compensate for it.
Desserts were average and uninteresting.
I think on another day and with different choices we would've enjoyed the visit, but based on this experience I won't be returning.
Some of the best vegetarian food I have ever had. Had to ask for the vegetarian menu, but the food was amazing. Highly recommended.
We had an absolutely lovely evening here to celebrate our anniversary. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to help with our celebrations. The food was exquisite and the set menu was really reasonably priced. The only thing I'd say is that there was no vegetarian choices at all on the set menu, but it might well be that they would cater for people on request. Otherwise, would wholeheartedly recommend.
Thank you for making our last night of our Honeymoon a night to remember! The Tasting Menu paired with the classic wines was delicious!
Nothing special at all. Food average. Service *terrible* even at 6:30 on a Thursday night. I wouldn’t recommend or go back. There’s much better places to try out.
Lot of noise , basic food , not cheap but not too expensive
excellent food and staff. will definitely go again!!
Excellent set lunch - both the ricotta starter and the cod were perfectly cooked.
A very good meal. Service was on point and the little birthday card for my other half was a nice touch.
Food was satisfactory but service most definitely wasn’t.
We waited 30 minutes for our reserved 9.30pm table to be ready and 20minutes for a drink. I know the emphasis is informal but this was a little too informal for us. The restaurant was clearly understaffed despite many empty tables, with staff members looking stressed. Not the Michelin star experience we have enjoyed elsewhere. Food was to a good standard but not memorable. There was an extradinary wait for our main course such that we were too tired to order desert as it was 11.30pm when we finished. We understand that sometimes there are delays getting tables and food, but at no point did we feel looked after by any member of staff, just ferried from one place to another or just left. Won’t be going back.
Had the 5 course tasting menu and standard wine pairing. The food was delicious but I did feel short changed on portion size. If I hadn’t eaten the bread I would have left hungry.
The wine was interesting, checked some of them on Vivino and most quite reasonably priced which made me wonder why the sommelier was so stingy with his pouring. Certainly not good value for the £50 price tag.
The restaurant was very noisy.
Nice food & wine but only for those with small appetites.
Loved it! Went for a friends surprise birthday and we were al surprised !
Excellent food and interesting menu options. Very good service, strong ability to advise on menu, great wine and cocktail selection. High decibel levels - so no quiet conversations.
Food was excellent! Tomatoes salad was sweet and flavorful. Fish and duck entree was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The waiter was completely incompetent! The numerous requests for water and ice forgotten. The sommelier never checked in our champagne after dropping it off. One was particularly good and would have loved another glass. Didn’t see him the rest of the night. Waiter dropped off side salad we requested as an appetizer after we had finished our entree. He saw that we were peeved but just walked away. Didn’t even bother to apologize or acknowledged the mistake. We had to flagged another staff to get the bill bc the waiter spent 15 min talking with the table behind us and couldn’t be bothered. Felt like we were at a diner given the atrocious lack of service. We debated about requesting that the service charge be removed due to the poor and lack of service. Sad that the amazing chef can’t get the proper front of house to compliment the amazing food. Will never go back to restaurants.
