Corner table and first to arrive but food, service and atmosphere once peeps came in was amazing. The carrot and orange cake for pudding stood out the most
An excellent meal, polished from start to finish and the staff were really friendly and helpful recommending wines and being a strong mix of attentive not annoying!
Would recommend and definitely go back. Obviously it's not cheap but having been a chef and worked in a 3 star myself the price was worth it for the work that went in and the quality of the food.
Even the smoked butter (made in house) was top notch!
I had high hopes for social eating house when I booked. Other reviews were very favourable. Perhaps we were just unlucky.
My crab starter tasted not at all of crab but just overwhelmingly of oniony herbs. The accompanying almond gazpacho was tasteless. My main of halibut was ok but the confit duck leg was nowhere to be seen amongst the mass of onions. My husbands steak was good. Food service was exceptionally quick, too quick actually. The wine we ordered to go with our food never turned up and so had to be cancelled. We had to ask for the bill 3 times but when it came the service charge and the cost of our opening glasses of champagne had been removed since I had spoken to the deputy manager about our meal. That was appreciated but overall the experience under whelmed considerably.
Great bar service. Wonderful food. Will go back
Was looking forward to having my dinner here to celebrate my birthday but I’m really disappointed with the experience in general. The quality of food is good but nothing great to shout about. Food was too salty, did not have balance and the portions were way too big (it was so salty that there was just too much of it). The theatre menu is very confusing so you should definitely clarify before ordering. We ended up paying much more than we expected due to miscommunication with the staff.
Really enjoyed the experience! No real criticisms - went for friend's birthday
Let’s start with positive: cocktails in the bar upstairs were really good! I forgot name of one where it said you will taste marmalade toast and we did and it was great!
Now to restaurant: we were given menus and wine list. There was not a single vegetarian dish on menu (we had two vegetarians out of total group of four) so we figured it is a separate menu. I would assume in today’s world and in this kind of restaurant we would have been asked if we require vegetarian menu, but no such luck. Took a while to grab attention of waiter, when we finally did he disappeared before we finished a sentence and came back with one vegetarian menu. needless to say we had to ask for another one...
now to food. Three of us ordered gnocchi from vegetarian menu. I have never in my life eaten worse prepared gnocchi. They were so dry, it was impossible to eat them, we all ate vegetables and mushrooms from the dish and left gnocchi on the plate. Told waiter they are not edible, he called manager. She started explaining to us that gnocchi are roasted and pan fried. You can roast and pan fry but keep softness, these ones were just hard and dry.
Then the bill came - we ordered two bottles of wine, a few cocktails, starters and mains. Manager said she discounted bill due to gnocchi, turns out she charged us 13 pounds per dish rather than 23 - dish we couldn’t eat and with total bill of 400 pounds! Any other restaurant would have done better than that!
Not going back!!!!
Service was tremendous. The menu is wonderful - especially the ribeye.
The food was excellent and portions reasonable. But the wine service was poor - I asked the sommelier for a light red similar to Pinot Noir and he recommended their cheaper Beaujolais. Upon testing, although not 'corked' there was a very odd fermented smell and taste and it was slightly fizzy. There was certainly something wrong with the bottle of wine. The sommelier tasted it and thought that decanting it might help - it had no effect. He was happy to replace it with their other Beaujolais but didn't mention the price. He seemed adamant that we'd just chosen the wrong wine - not that it was a bad wine or he'd made a bad recommendation.
When the bill arrived, although they hadn't charged for the initial bottle, they did charge the higher price of the replacement (an additional £13), and included a 12.5% (£24) service charge. As it was my wife's birthday I didn't want to make an issue of it (classic british style!). But come away not feeling comfortable with their wine service.
Staff were attentive and friendly. Food was on point and the restaurant, whilst busy, was spacious and not over crowded. Will go again.
The set lunch was excellent as ever.
Food were too salty.
The food was good but some dishes were too salty and the dessert was average. The service was very good with attentive staff, but the room was very noisy to the point that we could not hear the conversation at our table properly. Overall not too bad, but not for a Michelin starred restaurant and the price of the food.
Amazing set lunch menu. The à la carte is much more pricey
A very lovely restaurant with an interesting menu, in a good location. Perfect size and nicely complimented by the upstairs bar.
Had been before. Never again.
Just brilliant - would go again and again and again
Simple epic. Did the chefs counter and it was an experience we will never forget. All the small touches we so good. Thank you so much!!!
Average food and variable service that doesn't set the world on fire compared to similar Michelin-starred restaurants in London. However what is in the Social Eating House favour, is the value for money and compared to aforementioned venues, was pretty pleasing. In summary if you don't need your mind blown with astonishing taste, but fancy a 'fair-to-good' fine-dining restaurant that is very good value compared to similar establishments, then the Social Eating house is a good choice.
Starter was nice. Main was really really salty. One of the table sent theirs back. Service was fairly poor - noone offered to take your coat and staff weren't overly friendly - not service with a smile. Overall we were quite disappointed.
I already went 2 times previously and had a great experience. This last time was not. The service was not at the expectation level for this place and it was way too noisy.
Loved the food, it was exceptional. The crab starter was beautiful and also the ‘crumble’ had amazing flavours and textures. Noise was a little on the loud side but added to the atmosphere. Service generally good, had to keep asking for water but other wise was good. Would recommend for a special occasion.
The food was excellent. We got the set lunch with beat root salad and cod for the main. The food is head and shoulders above the alternatives in the area.
Having never been to a Michelin Restaurant maybe I set my expectations too high. I went for the tasting menu and I was very much underwhelmed. I thought I was paying for an experience when really what I experienced was a pretty average meal. I thought the staff were excellent, however, if I was to value my experience I would have priced it at less than half of what I paid, was not worth the money by any means.
An excellent meal, very well priced with top notch service: highly recommended.
Fantastic tasting menu, amazing and attentive service. Very social venue, slightly loud if only a small table
The food was good but not exceptional and as I have visited other Jason Atherton restaurants before, I was a little disappointed as I expected more of a wow. The ambience was good as it was buzzy for a Monday night and it had a nice relaxed vibe.
My main criticism is of the Barman who took our order in the bar before we sat down for dinner, who was arrogant, rude and awkward to deal with on two separate occasions and spoke down to us and was very unhelpful. Kept wanting to tell us how it is done in"high end bars" rather than just using the mixer we asked for.
