Social Wine and Tapas
Food and service has really declined since the last time I visited. For example, I was told the selection of cheese was "goat cheese, blue cheese, soft cheese and hard cheese." The food no longer the quality one should expect, the service was indifferent to the point of rudeness. Avoid.
No value for money. Overpriced!
Lovely place. The wine list is extravagant and the food is amazing. The place is quite noisy but overall satisfy with everything!
I returned to Social and Wine after one year. I used to be a frequent visitor before I moved outside of London. Unfortunately, I left S&W feeling very disappointed. The food was average, the wine selection had clearly shrunk (hardly any new world wines) and the service didn't go beyond and above either. The price, however, remained in place. It used to be a great place to go for me...not anymore.
We have been guests for a couple of times, but this visit was just disappointing. No attentive waiters, food took really long. Once we asked when the next dish would be served and the answer was “the two kitchen are not communicating with each other so he doesn’t know”. When we left I expressed my disappointment with the manager and he thanked me for the feedback. No apologies or any other reaction. No sense for the non existing experience they just created for a regular guest. We won’t come back.
Delicious food, specially octopus!!!
Would be great to have more options wine by the glass
Great food but extremely expensive for what it was. Extremely quiet on the night we went (it was a Monday so fair enough) but service was still very slow and very few staff.
Great selection of wines
Starters were delicious; paella a little bland. Extensive wine menu but few choices of Spanish wine and all wines rather expensive. Very warm welcome provided, as was the meal service; however, the bar staff seemed rather ‘cold’ and no apology offered on the two occasions he knocked into the back of one of our chairs when passing, as a result of furniture all being very close together
A great venue in terms of food , wine and service. A pity they have given up on lunchtimes as it was a great place to hold informal business lunches. Evenings are also good but noise level is really high.
Really horrible service. Completely disinterested and rude. Never again. Avoid avoid avoid
Big fan of the Jason Atherton restaurants. Hadn’t visited this one so Valentine’s Day dinner was a good excuse. Food was superb (burrata with blood orange and tempura sea bream were our highlights) but service a little offhand- in a restaurant of this calibre I wouldn’t expect a dish to just be shoved down without any mention of what it was and just leaving us to figure it out. But these were all minor things. Still a very good meal and at £50/head including service and a glass of wine each, decent value for this part of town. Great evening overall.
Great wine, food and service once there. I do not expect to be hassled about confirming a table though by a unknown number.
Friendly service that gives you just enough attention and put you at ease. Will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.
The food was interesting and gave variety but the larger portions were expensive and there were no sensibly priced wines if you wanted to enjoy the ambience and service, which were good, without costing a lot
Not what it used to be. Tapas means dishes can be served any time but for the main dishes to be the starters and the pardon peppers and tomato bread to be served after with the patatas bravas as desert is inane. Also the pepper grinder fell apart on top of the food and we then had to share our new pepper grinder with a number of other tables. Water was not refilled. Used to love it there but clearly the guests are treated like cattle.
Went with a few friends as wanted good wine and whine time. I did like the atmosphere and the wine was good (not blown away as was expecting), the food was nice but limited vegan options and were all very small (but not necessarily priced as such).
Unusual place, seated at the bar on a cold evening you need to be wrapped up as the large door lets the cold air in. Having said this the food was lovely if not a tad expensive for tapas.
The sea bream tempura was lovely - wine list good, gin options poor.
Overall though a nice option.
Cracking food, great atmosphere
Had a lovely brunch. Service and food lovely. Value I feel a bit high on food plates but the quality of what you get is top. I would have loved to sit downstairs as I felt more atmosphere there!
All the food was excellent, my only complaint would be that the patatas bravas were sort of deconstructed, more like chips with the sauce on the side. Don't mess with perfection!
food is delicious and comforting, cooked really well with no long waiting periods. Service was friendly and mostly efficient, although it was a little slow at times. But nothing too serious. Great ambience and beautiful setting.
Food was perfectly acceptable, albeit pricey, waiter service was good but front of house was frosty and not even a welcome. Booked for my wife’s birthday and that wasn’t even acknowledged. Despite it being 14.00 hours on a Saturday the place was empty apart from one other couple. This suggests something is wrong (all surrounding restaurants were busy).
The food was good food, however the service only okay, but not friendly. Did not feel welcomed.
I have been here before but was v disappointed in the service this time which let the whole experience down. We arrived 20 mins early for the table and debated whether to stop in a pub first but decided to just have a drink there as the table was ready. Ordered a beer and some wine, the drinks didn’t arrive for over half an hour with chasing 3-4 times. I don’t know whether ordering a beer in a very wine oriented place was a problem for them but they assured us they had two types of beer on offer. Since it was a Friday after work, a beer to start the evening doesn’t seem too much to ask. The maitre d was aware we were chasing and looking around for our drinks but failed to intervene until I left the table to go up to him. He then went off to find out but then lots of other drinks came to other tables but not ours with no explanation. It spoiled the evening for us even though it seems like a simple thing.
I booked for my best friend’s 30th birthday, I called up to ask if they did little birthday cakes or if I should bring my own. They said they did complimentary cakes and she had put it in the notes. Dessert came around and no cake, I had no opportunity to bring it up without spoiling the surprise so she didn’t get one, I was so disappointed. If I’d known this would happen I would have brought my own. We also had to ask about three different waiters if we could place our order. The food was nice and we still had a nice time, but I wanted it to be extra special for her birthday.
We sat downstairs in the area just at the bottom of the steps - table 21 I think - the area was very cramped and my guest had to move continually to let the staff past due the adjacent table guest sitting in the area I would suggest was used for service. This was really quite inappropriate and I had to apologise to my guest.
The staff seemed unconcerned and when I motioned that the neighbouring table was causing the issue I was ignored.
This was my 5th visit to the restaurant and the food was excellent BUT service was very slow - we took 1 hour 40 mins for a relatively limited number of dishes - there were long delays between single dishes being delivered.
I appreciate good food it cooked to order however there seemed to be plates being delivered to larger tables in a much more speedy fashion.
A little disappointed.
Not as enjoyable as other times I've been here.
the produce used was fresh and delicious, though I felt that all the dishes had very similar flavours and now real wow factor as you would find at BArafina. We had the cod, Octopus, carrots, sirloin.
Dishes are neither explained nor suggested by the staff, two much sauces, two of us did not felt well afterwards because not easy to digest. A kind of French cousine in miniature. Service was indifferent.
Excellent food, particularly the sea bream tempura, the pork, and the vegetable tapas were really remarkable. Good ambience but I’d turn down the music one notch.
One on the nicest place We have never been to !
It is really an incredible experience. We are French often trying good adresses in London and we love to discover such restaurants. Try the ham croquettes, the salted beetroot , the charred hispi cabbage or the chargrilled carrots and taste the 28-day aged beef rib-eye !
Despite the standard of food being very good, I am unable to give this restaurant a good review due to the appalling service. The restaurant hadn't catered for our reservation and we were left waiting for 20 minutes with no offer of a drink or menu to look at. When we were finally seated it took more than 10 minutes to receive a drink. We ordered food and requested two dishes without nuts Durban to an allergy in the group. Both came with nuts in it. When we sent it back to be remade it too over an your to come back. A couple of the staff didn't speak any
English at all so things that we had ordered never materialised. As a result, I wouldn't not recommend this restaurant due to the service, although I would say that the food and ambience was very good
Delicious menu. Perfect for a relaxed less formal meal. As with many restaurants these days the wine list mixes newer style wines and traditional, so it’s important to be clear on your preferences esp given the price point of many of those offered
Great food and wine. Would have like to be seated upstairs on the ground floor overlooking the street (we were seated against a wall by the staircase downstairs in the basement.
I recommended this place to my husband. We were disappointed on every level and did not feel our custom was welcome. The contrast between this and the restaurant we dined at the following evening only highlighted its shortcomings more
We came to make up or break up
+ food cooked to perfection
+ portions are just right
+ design is moody and stylish
- slightly too noisy on the ground level (basement seemed calmer)
The food and wine are usually great but the tables downstairs are way too close together and I kept having to move my chair to let waiters pass. Not very relaxing
The tapas were truly amazing. High quality food, cooking and presentation. The atmosphere is elegant and relaxed. We just think we payed too much for our sangria (12,5£ a glass). Otherwise everything was perfect.
