What Insiders Are Saying
St John Bread and Wine serves food from the legendary St. John in Farringdon, but in an informal canteen-style dining room near Spitalfields Market.
Amazing food. Conservative seating plan
I would recommend for the food as it is so unlike any other London restaurant the plates were very well executed but the service was below average and very disappointing for the price you pay and the reputation- although staff were polite and friendly, we were waiting a long time for the main and completely forgotten about afterwards. We ended up waiting more than 40 minutes or so to pay before anyone had come over. Not really service I would expect when you’re paying £100 or so for 2 people.
Delicious food and wine. It was an empty day in the restaurant so the vibe was subdued but actually perfect for us to have a proper conversation without shouting!
Great food great time
Third time at this one - fantastic food as ever. Always impressed by the variation on the menu. It was fairly quiet for lunch and we weren’t rushed at all. We ended up getting about three small dishes, a whole crab and a grilled mackerel between four which was a good amount for us.
Overall a really disappointing experience unfortunately. I had wanted to dine at St. John’s for some time and finally found an excuse to visit. No tables left at main restaurant so settled for Bread and Wine. Wish I hadn’t! The starters were of good quality (devilled kidneys!!) but the mains were a massive let down. We initially received the wrong order and had to wait an additional 20 minutes. The duck had only been seared skin side so was completely raw. The goat was 3/4 fat and overpowered by aioli that had turned to mush in the gravy. Nearly shattered my teeth on a prune stone left in the dish. Service overall was slow and disengaging. On the plus, good quality and varied wine selection. I believe St. John’s has a Michelin star but based on our experience I don’t think it’s worthy considering the quality of other great restaurants in London with one.
Unique take on farm-to-table British food -- rigorous in concept yet wonderful to eat. Solicitous service, beautiful room.
Excellent food, wine and a great atmosphere. Really pleased with our evening
Really great place near Spitafelds! Highly recommend especially to those visiting nearby.
I love this place. It's a local gem, very good food that can be shared and a great wine bar. It's not exactly intimate with a large room and lots of tables, but I find it refreshing, modern, cool and friendly and the Eccles Cakes are to die for.
Amazing dining experience. We had a ball! Your staff were absolutely fantastic at making us feel at home and at ease. Thank you
Server Philip was great
We were with family for Xmas, 4 adults and three young adults. The restaurant exceeded all expectations. The Pheasant and Trotter Pie, Roasted Marrow Bone and Marrowwhite were all fantastic! We will be back!
great food, friendly and easy ospitality, british atmsphere. def a nice place to eat or drink a glass of wine. bread is delicious.
Really delicious, inventive food presented beautifully. The flavors were unique and rich. Incredible wine list. A can’t miss!
Had a lovely time at St. John Bread and Wine - a bit of a bucket list place for me - made more special by how everything lived up to my expectations - thanks!
Excellent service over a very long lunch for 4. Sharing dishes worked well, although the portion sizes vary a lot, so we should have ordered 2 of some. Everyone's favourite dish was the smoked cods roe. Hard to pick a runner up, but perhaps a tie between the Ox tail and ducks hearts.
Atmosphere was very lively and buzzing.
Been coming here for over 10 years, whenever I come to London I always drop by. Great variety of special and seasonal food with flavour. nothing pretentious. A real foody place.
The food was phenomenal and our waiter wa soutstanding. We ate everything he recommended and it was sublime. Thank you for a delicious night!
I went with a friend for dinner. We had a mixture of the main dishes (we have big appetites). The trotter and sausage casserole and mackerel were good. Nice ambience and good service.
The food served was great. We had the herring which was really fresh, served with mash potatoes - the mash was to die for.
Of course for dessert, we had the madeleines. Amazing!
amazing seasonal food with a great wine list. an very kind stuff
Simple ingredients inventive delicious food
Been coming to St John Smithfield and Spitalfield for years and still our favourite restaurant!!
It was a lovely evening, all my guests really enjoyed the meal and the Madeira was delicious with dessert.
Excellent service and food as always! Thanks team!
The food was exquisite.
I look forward to coming back again soon!
The best duck leg of my life! I also really enjoyed our server. He was very helpful with menu selections and extremely jovial.
Excellent, ingenious, tradition with a twist. Pheasant and trotter pie was magnificent, tasty, filling and warming.
Fantastic food, great service, wine list was concise but fantastic. I loved it and highly recommend.
Absolutely amazing British food. Quality ingredients and impeccable execution.
Wonderful all around! Friendly and accommodating. Food was simple yet delicious...highly recommended!
Atmosphere was quite staid. Staff seemed to be going through the motions. Mussels were gritty and broth thin and the serving was paltry. Other food was ok but overall very underwhelming.
We had our usual corner table & settled in for a familiar treat. Soon the restaurant filled up & the noise level started to rise. There was a large group of mostly men, who looked like they were out for an office do. They got louder as they got drunker. We asked our waiter if he could have a word with them, but it made no difference. It reached unbearable levels as they vied to have selfies with the suckling pig. We left earlier than usual, ears ringing and tempers fizzing. Not the usual delightful evening that we three friends usually enjoy, sad to say
My favorite place to eat in London. Great service, great food.
Pro - ox heart, smoked mackerel + cocktails
Con - busy table nearby were very intrusive + long wait for dessert
Service was great, and the food is as usual fantastic. Particularly I enjoyed the beef mince on duck fat fried toast, it was so flavorful. I loved the white cabbage with brown shrimps too, delicious yet simple. Would love to come back soon to try out other dishes.
Just my favourite. Food is exceptional as is the service.
Good location to get away from business sector. Easy to talk. Service was great, everything was well explained. Food very unusual and created taste explosions! Good wine options, some light enough for lunch!
Nice room, not fussy or pretentious.
Buoni piatti tradizionali come i marrow bone. Servizio cortese.
