Fergus Henderson’s original home of “Nose to Tail Eating” opened in a former smokehouse around the corner from Smithfield Market in 1994.

Celebrating the finest of indigenous British produce and making the most of what is seasonally best whilst applying straight forward cooking techniques, St. John is now celebrated as one of the 50 Best Restaurants in the World and in 2009 was awarded its first Michelin Star.

Nose to tail eating means that, where appropriate, every part of the animal should be put to good use in the kitchen and so along with Roast Beef and Lemon Sole, diners will find Rolled Pig’s Spleen, Kidneys and Ox Heart, Liver and Chitterlings as well as the Roast Bone Marrow & Parsley Salad, something of a ‘signature’ dish.

Whilst often cited as not a restaurant to take a vegetarian too, the kitchen source and prepare dishes for vegetarians with the same amount of studiousness as they do the meat, fish and poultry and desserts.

Great place. Shockingly British in a good way. The food was excellent as you would expect, service was good and a really good overall value!
I would highly recommend!

Fantastic food at a great venue but unfortunately our waitress seemed in a very bad mood. She seemed impatient and treated us more as an interruption than trying to help. Very disappointing as the chef and other members of staff do such a great job.

Great food, slightly marred by slow service. It's nice not to be rushed, but there was quite a wait between the courses, and I'd nearly finished my glass of wine before my main came. There was no offer of another glass when our mains came, and I finished it very quickly, even while making a point to leave my empty glass at the edge of our table I was nearly done my main by the time I was offered a refill. The service staff were lovely, but the slowness was a bit of a letdown.

The steak and kidney pie was a major disappointment as there was no kidney found and the steak wasn't much to dish out.

Brilliant as always. The menu is sometimes challenging but all the better for it. I had the Bone Marrow and Parsley salad to start, a classic. Ox Heart, Beetroot and Horseradish for a main, superb, the heart tastes like cuts of grilled fillet steak and the horseradish can, at times, take your breath away. For dessert I had Twice Baked Chocolate Cake which wasn’t heavy but packed a hefty, dense, chocolatey punch. I also drank too many negronis, which for my money are some of the best and best value in London.
This place is a must visit for residents or tourists.

Second visit was as good as the first. Excellent food and service. Despite being very busy, the young
man taking care of six of us was exemplary. Your Welsh rarebit is to die for, and your selection of real
ales though limited to three had a sensible range. I enjoyed my re-acquaintance with Wadworth 6X
which is a bit of a rarity these days in London with so many local breweries producing good ale, particularly Five Points.

Our absolutely favourite place to dine in London – the latest visit was just a tiny bit off it's usual high standards. First though, the food was divine. A salted liver and radish salad was a simply gorgeous combination of flavours. Green beans in a horseradish dressing was the perfect accompaniment to simple, but perfect slices of ox heart. My companion's brill and chips got absolutely rave reviews too – the most perfectly cooked piece of fish I've ever tasted.
The small minus points were that we had to to ask – twice – for bread. And when it came, the butter was very slightly rancid... it had that over-yellow, waxy look and queasy bitterness of a butter that had been out of the fridge too long. Also, I always state on the booking for that one of us is coeliac and will need help ordering gluten-free choices. Normally, this is noted and, as soon as we're seated, the waiter brings a menu that he or she has already gone through with the chef. This didn't happen this time - we had to ask. And although it was no problem and there were (as always) plenty of choices, we missed having that cared-for feeling we usually get when we come here!

It was the best meal of our trip after extensive travelling in Italy and France !

Particular good were the mussels, snails and bone marrow entrees.

Thoroughly recommend !

bone marrow is a killer! Will be back for it!
Not sure about the pigeon...seems to us the texture is rather hard to chew.

This is my favourite restaurant in London. It is honest food, tasty, not for the faint-hearted, and while the bill may be above average it is still a great value for money. Nowhere else do I find this concentration of pure-blooded taste!

I was looking forward to dining in St. John as I had heard and read amazing things about it. Sadly, on the Tuesday I booked a table for, the place was absolutely full, noisy and hectic and it took an embarrasingly long time for the main course to arrive. The food was delicious, but the overall experience could have been better.

This was our third visit as we make a point to come on every visit to London. The food was outstanding as always. We love the bone marrow, lamb heart and sweet breads. I think our server was a little annoyed with us, but don't know why. Other than that the service is very good. We will definitely be back on our next visit.

Dined here last year and it was great. Was keen to return however left disappointed. Service was a big miss. Our waiter lacked knowledge of the menu and struggled to make recommendations. We were never checked on after receiving our food and never offered second beverages. I was sharing St.John with a restaurateur friend of mine and he wasn’t impressed.Food was good as expected.

Each time we return to St John it seems to be better than ever. We don't often get fish dishes, but the two we sampled this time were wonderful (whole plaice, haddock steak). The lamb heart starter was the best of the heart preparations I have had at St John. And we love the madeleines. The food comes with timing that doesn't rush the meal, and service was excellent. The wine list is excellent and reasonable. The only downside is that it is quite noisy, and sometimes hard to hear even your dinner partner.
