Stones Restaurant Matlock
Food and service were both excellent especially the lamb cooked to perfection thank you for a great meal
Excellent as always. Looking forward to returning in December!
Anniversary meal. Terrific food, great evening, top class value. Thanks to everyone at Stones for a lovely evening.
Very good selection of food and wine. We had the tasting menu and it was excellent. Very modern dining experience.
Not the usual old men in ties and jackets, listening to cutlery scraping plates because its so quiet.
Excellent food and service. Relaxed atmosphere. Nothing too much trouble.
Excellent food and service. The bread was outstanding. Only minus is the entrance down steep stone steps.
Very good online booking system easy to use, restaurant felt cosy and noise level was low and easy to hold a conversation, the menu choice was small which indicated fresh and excellent dishes ( which it was ) the staff were lovely polite, well spoken and discreet, later on the restaurant became a little warm but the excellent staff noticed this and without asking opened door so that cool air circulated.... Meals were delicious and complimentary canopies as well as lovely after dinner chocolates were served. Well recommended - book early !!!
I have eaten at Stones a few times and my husband and I love it for special occasions. We were a party of 6 on Saturday. I had the goats cheese starter which was nice but there wasn’t much to it. Normally there are many other flavours on the plate. My main course of Pan fried cod was tasty. All parties enjoyed their meals although one member had the beef which he felt was over, he ordered it medium. Service however was poor. We had to continue asking for our wine to be poured and the beer was served warm,. One member of the party had to wait quite a while for his main course. Overall it felt disorganised, not up to it’s usual standard.
Its the best restaurant in the area and never fails to deliver !!!
Great decor, good lighting and comfortable seating.
Service excellent and not intrusive.
Food outstanding. Nice touch with delicious amuse bouche. Presentation of our starters and mains were beautiful. The taste .... wow!
Can not recommend this restaurant enough.
Absolutely loving evening celebrating our wedding anniversary with my brother and sister in law.
We have been to Stones on several occasions with different friends and family and will be returning.
We had a celebratory lunch with friends, which was fantastic. The food was excellent and the staff couldn't do enough to make our visit enjoyable.
Our lunch at Stones was as wonderful as it usually is. Fantastic food and brilliant service. My friend and I cannot fault it. I am a coeliac and the food choice is great. I always enjoy the delicious gluten free bread with their duo of butters.
My wife and I were celebrating the birth of our grand daughter xx
We were disappointed as we were expecting a lovely special meal for my partner's birthday. As far as setting goes, it felt more like a cafe than a posh restaurant and our table was far too small. It was hard to fit everything on. In fact our bottle of prosecco had to be kept at the bar as there was no room in the table. It felt cramped. My creamy soup starter (which was delicious) had large firm vegetables in it which needed a knife and fork to eat. It was an awkward way to eat soup with nowhere to put the extra cutlery needed. It seemed an odd combination. Our mains were both disappointing. My partner's beef was tough and he couldn't cut. It was served with leek segments which were not cooked all the way so we're impossible to cut and tasted awful. The mushrooms were so salty he couldn't eat them. I had the polenta pizza. It was tasty overall, but was covered in about 15 black olives that were the kind you buy in a jar in brine. I was surprised as I have these in my fridge and expected something a little more subtle and special! At one point I had to get up to refill our glasses as no one else had (remember our bottle was at the bar). It was overall a deeply dissatisfying experience and for the price shockingly poor.
Waited 3 months for a table and thought it wS very average. The outside terrace is beautiful, lovely flowing water background but after being seated and ordering drinks we were soon moved indoors and served them at our table. Would of been nice to enjoy outdoors esp as we had arrived early to do this.
Food was nice but not worth the hype, wine was lovely.
Yet again, superb. I always look forward to visiting Stones and am never disappointed. Great food, ambience and service. They just have it ‘right’.
Having asked for a quiet table we were allocated a table next to the door and opposite the bar - so occasionally noisy. The staff were pleasant and attentive. The food was excellent if rather over rich. We certainly did not need a starter. A special occasion venue.
We were hoping for an excellent experience at Stones judging by previous reviews. However, this restaurant seems like it’s there but unfortunately doesn’t hit the mark.
We entered the restaurant down some very steep steps and my parents had a big issue getting up and down - not sure you can change that but if you have elderly people then that may be difficult. The waitress we initially had I think must have been new as we could not hear much of what she said and she had little knowledge of things. She brought us only one menu and after 10 minutes I got up and asked for 3 more. The starters came and were presented well but just seemed to lack something in the taste. The mains were the same and my parents asked for soft veg rather than aldente but I don’t think that was taken on board. My steak I asked for medium rare but was only just pink in the middle and outside well done. My mother’s lamb was definitely over cooked even though we had quite a lengthy conversation about wanting pink but no blood. Desserts were the star of the show and we have no issue with those and were delicious. For what we paid, over £200 for 4 people we would have expected excellent food with top notch service. Sadly won’t be returning.
Our go-to restaurant for a special occasion - did not disappoint
Everything was lovely.
Excellent celebration meal. Great food and service as always.
Lovely setting, fantastic food and service.
I recommend this restaurant superb!
Loved it yet again. Crab risotto was amazing. See you in 3 weeks!
Lovely experience/setting, faultless from start to finish
Service ,pleasant and professional. Food not as good as previous visit . The beef rather " chewy" . Told waitress but no real comment . 7/10 only.
Food was stunning as usual, and great service. We were sitting by the bar and till which wasn’t as nice as in the conservatory or middle area, but we still had an amazing night, thank you
Absolutely fantastic evening for our wedding anniversary. As always food excellent, service brilliant and a thoroughly lovely evening. Thank you
We caught the train from Derby. The restaurant is just across the road from Matlock station. Had the tasting menu and wines to compliment each course 8 in total. The food was wonderful and the wines very smooth. We will definitely go again and have already told our friends to try it out. We sat down at 18.30 and didn’t feel rushed to leave for the 22.56 train back. Excellent service, very friendly staff. Also the menus changes every couple of months and you will probably need a couple of months to be prepared for the next time. Note to self don’t eat anything before a visit. But do book well in advance if your going for a special occasion!!!
We feel very lucky to have a restaurant of this standard in the area
Food and service excellent, restaurant in a lovely location. Had to share one of each dessert as could not decide which to choose, all excellent.
My husbands Birthday was made so specisl. Good food. Good service. Good wine. He loved it. The staff even bought a birthday plate out with chocs and a sparkler.
Fantastic food and service would definitely recommend.
The finest dining experience we have enjoyed for a long time. The food, wine and staff were excellent
Fabulous lunch at Stones.
We had a super time celebrating our daughter's and son-in-law's birthday. From the amuse bouche through to coffee at the end of a tasty three course meal, Stones offered us great value and service.
Stones didn’t disappoint!
5 stars given for every aspect of this lovely restaurant can’t praise it enough .
Went for lunch with my wife who had the chicken terrine which she found over seasoned. No sea bass was available for the main course so my wife had the alternative of cod, i had the jerk pork shoulder which again was over seasoned. When i mentioned this to staff who came around they offered to change the meal without hesitation, but i preferred the pork to the other options so continued with the meal. At the end of the meal another staff member came who already knew of the issuses with the meal and offered us free desserts which were both excellent. On the whole the meal was very good, excellent presentation, lovely tasty canapes and bread, professional staff, nice setting, just marred by the issuses mentioned, but to Stones credit it was dealt with well and it would not put me off coming again and recommending Stones to other people.
The food was excellent - good sized portions and lunch price was fixed - no hidden extras. Delicious warm bread and a couple of little tasters on the house. My husband had a slight problem in cutting the leeks and the waitress very quickly brought some extra vegetables. My only problem was that we were placed inside in a corner squeezed in between the wall and the table next to us. It was a beautiful sunny day and I felt disappointed and expressed this to the waitress. Unfortunately she said that all the tables in the conservatory were booked and advised us to be more specific when booking.
