Stones Restaurant Matlock
Lovely restaurant for our wedding anniversary with attentive staff. Thankyou
Bright and welcoming decor, staff very attentive without being irritating, the small menu allowed the food to be of exceptional quality. Thoughtful touches throughout that I will not spoil your own experiences. Steps were steep but haven’t checked if there are other ways in. Had a lovely time, thank you
We were recommended to visit and it didn't disappoint. We opted for the taster menu and couldn't fault it. A great place to visit for a special occasion.
Very good value 8 course tasting menu. All courses delicious, great canapés, good wine list (great value) we had 2 bottles of sancerre and a bottle of grand brut champagne and didn't break the bank. Will definitely be back.
We had the taster menu. Food good, with 2 excellent dishes. The 1st course and the lamb. The desert courses were very good. The Scollops contained one very small scallop and the other fish course was minute. We have been to the Maze in London and the Garden House in Cambridge more than 4 times. The tasting menus at these restaurants is usually more substantial. A very large scallop is often served.
However we both thought the quality of the food was very high.
Next time we are in Matlock we will have al la carte.
Excellent as usual.
The food is always well thought out, perfectly seasoned and presented. I do think that the portions are excessively small though, even for fine dining.
That said, we felt satisfied after eating, however I think it would deter some people with larger appetites.
Cannot wait to return .
Arrived 10 mins early to a not very welcoming hosts.
Real strong toilet disinfectant smell.
Food very underwhelming and bland at times. We had the tasting menu small portions as expected but no punchy flavours so disappointed as it was an anniversary treat.
Apparently the main chef has opened another restaurant and is concentrating on getting that going leaving a junior chef here.
Would not even consider going again.
Hi the best restaurant in area by far, brilliant food good choice of wines and excellent service , deserves a star.
Returned to Stones after a previuos excellent experience. This time to celebrate a friends 50th and again experienced an excellent evening with friendly service , a great range of tastes from the taster menu al in a great setting
Absolutely lovely! Will definitely be going again. Can’t fault anything
I think this was our 7th visit over several years and, as always, the whole experience was superb. Good food, great staff, lovely restaurant; what’s not to like?
Amazing as ever and looking forward to the next time! 🥰
Took some friends to celebrate a special birthday and also a thank you for helping us out. Had a lovely evening with really excellent food. Staff all really attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Only criticism, the first part of the meal was a bit rushed. We ordered cocktails to have with our canapés and lovely breads but starters and wine was being served before we had finished these. A couple of drinks got forgotten and had to remind them but was sorted quickly after the reminder. After my husband had paid a decorated plate with chocolates and a sparkler was brought as one of the staff had overhead him talking about the birthday to one of our friends which was a lovely thoughtful touch, will be going again soon I hope.
Absolutely excellent dining experience. Everything is amazing.
Each time I go to Stones I think why don’t I come more often. It’s a little gem of a Restaurant with great food. Ticks all the boxes for me and I’ve been lucky enough to have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the World.
We had an amazing night with friends; We arrived and our table was ready but we were asked if we wanted to go outside for drinks before sitting, which we did. There was no rush, everything was relaxed and the drinks were delicious. We all opted for the 8 course tasting menu with wine flight and each course was carefully explained to us upon arrival.
The entire evening was fab and we will be back soon!
Food and service were both excellent especially the lamb cooked to perfection thank you for a great meal
Excellent as always. Looking forward to returning in December!
Anniversary meal. Terrific food, great evening, top class value. Thanks to everyone at Stones for a lovely evening.
Very good selection of food and wine. We had the tasting menu and it was excellent. Very modern dining experience.
Not the usual old men in ties and jackets, listening to cutlery scraping plates because its so quiet.
Excellent food and service. Relaxed atmosphere. Nothing too much trouble.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Stones. The food was exceptional and we had a memorable evening. Unfortunately the service did not match up to the quality of the food and the restaurant. The young ladies were pleasant and charming but really lacked experience. Our wine was taken away from the table to keep cool but we had to repeatedly ask for our glasses to be topped up. Several things were knocked over in their haste. I am sure they will learn their trade and be an asset to a great restaurant.
Excellent food and service. The bread was outstanding. Only minus is the entrance down steep stone steps.
Very good online booking system easy to use, restaurant felt cosy and noise level was low and easy to hold a conversation, the menu choice was small which indicated fresh and excellent dishes ( which it was ) the staff were lovely polite, well spoken and discreet, later on the restaurant became a little warm but the excellent staff noticed this and without asking opened door so that cool air circulated.... Meals were delicious and complimentary canopies as well as lovely after dinner chocolates were served. Well recommended - book early !!!
I have eaten at Stones a few times and my husband and I love it for special occasions. We were a party of 6 on Saturday. I had the goats cheese starter which was nice but there wasn’t much to it. Normally there are many other flavours on the plate. My main course of Pan fried cod was tasty. All parties enjoyed their meals although one member had the beef which he felt was over, he ordered it medium. Service however was poor. We had to continue asking for our wine to be poured and the beer was served warm,. One member of the party had to wait quite a while for his main course. Overall it felt disorganised, not up to it’s usual standard.
Its the best restaurant in the area and never fails to deliver !!!
Great decor, good lighting and comfortable seating.
Service excellent and not intrusive.
Food outstanding. Nice touch with delicious amuse bouche. Presentation of our starters and mains were beautiful. The taste .... wow!
Can not recommend this restaurant enough.
Absolutely loving evening celebrating our wedding anniversary with my brother and sister in law.
We have been to Stones on several occasions with different friends and family and will be returning.
We had a celebratory lunch with friends, which was fantastic. The food was excellent and the staff couldn't do enough to make our visit enjoyable.
Our lunch at Stones was as wonderful as it usually is. Fantastic food and brilliant service. My friend and I cannot fault it. I am a coeliac and the food choice is great. I always enjoy the delicious gluten free bread with their duo of butters.
My wife and I were celebrating the birth of our grand daughter xx
We were disappointed as we were expecting a lovely special meal for my partner's birthday. As far as setting goes, it felt more like a cafe than a posh restaurant and our table was far too small. It was hard to fit everything on. In fact our bottle of prosecco had to be kept at the bar as there was no room in the table. It felt cramped. My creamy soup starter (which was delicious) had large firm vegetables in it which needed a knife and fork to eat. It was an awkward way to eat soup with nowhere to put the extra cutlery needed. It seemed an odd combination. Our mains were both disappointing. My partner's beef was tough and he couldn't cut. It was served with leek segments which were not cooked all the way so we're impossible to cut and tasted awful. The mushrooms were so salty he couldn't eat them. I had the polenta pizza. It was tasty overall, but was covered in about 15 black olives that were the kind you buy in a jar in brine. I was surprised as I have these in my fridge and expected something a little more subtle and special! At one point I had to get up to refill our glasses as no one else had (remember our bottle was at the bar). It was overall a deeply dissatisfying experience and for the price shockingly poor.
Waited 3 months for a table and thought it wS very average. The outside terrace is beautiful, lovely flowing water background but after being seated and ordering drinks we were soon moved indoors and served them at our table. Would of been nice to enjoy outdoors esp as we had arrived early to do this.
Food was nice but not worth the hype, wine was lovely.
Yet again, superb. I always look forward to visiting Stones and am never disappointed. Great food, ambience and service. They just have it ‘right’.
Having asked for a quiet table we were allocated a table next to the door and opposite the bar - so occasionally noisy. The staff were pleasant and attentive. The food was excellent if rather over rich. We certainly did not need a starter. A special occasion venue.
We were hoping for an excellent experience at Stones judging by previous reviews. However, this restaurant seems like it’s there but unfortunately doesn’t hit the mark.
We entered the restaurant down some very steep steps and my parents had a big issue getting up and down - not sure you can change that but if you have elderly people then that may be difficult. The waitress we initially had I think must have been new as we could not hear much of what she said and she had little knowledge of things. She brought us only one menu and after 10 minutes I got up and asked for 3 more. The starters came and were presented well but just seemed to lack something in the taste. The mains were the same and my parents asked for soft veg rather than aldente but I don’t think that was taken on board. My steak I asked for medium rare but was only just pink in the middle and outside well done. My mother’s lamb was definitely over cooked even though we had quite a lengthy conversation about wanting pink but no blood. Desserts were the star of the show and we have no issue with those and were delicious. For what we paid, over £200 for 4 people we would have expected excellent food with top notch service. Sadly won’t be returning.
Our go-to restaurant for a special occasion - did not disappoint
Everything was lovely.
Excellent celebration meal. Great food and service as always.
Lovely setting, fantastic food and service.
I recommend this restaurant superb!
