I think we just chose a bad night before the Easter weekend was about to begin. There were not many bookings so not only did the restaurant lack atmosphere they reduced the staff numbers to such an extent that service was extremely slow and inattentive. Our main course signature dish of pork was dry and rather bland. It is a great shame as I have been here before and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening hence returning however I will not be returning soon.
Fabulous Creative food, lovey attentive service
We had a fantastic meal at Stovell’s on Sunday. It was onE of the best Sunday lunches I have ever had.
The service was excellent particularly Oliver, who made my Wife’s birthday extra special.
This was our first date night meal without our daughter or any planned entertainment, and our concerns were quickly removed with the front of house offering us the ‘taste of Mexico’ with matching drinks which was amazing, also the explanation of each part made this Saturday night meal unforgettable.
Fantastic food creative and delicious great size portions
This is definitely somewhere to go for a special treat. The venue is very comfortable and plenty of atmosphere particularly in the bar area. The service was excellent and the food good. The portions weren't huge but very tasty. A very nice touch was the amuse-bouche at the start and sweets at the end. The soup was rather ostentatiously described as Osmanthus & Chrysanthemum Broth Crab Tortellini and came in a pot that just about had space for a soup spoon. It tasted like beef tea - albeit tasty beef tea. The vegetarian dish was really just a piece of aubergine with some nuts on but they did refund the money on this dish when we commented on the poor value compared with the other dishes. The wine was very good but the cheapest bottle was £35. But we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would return for a special occasion.
The fish (sole)that I ordered was very pink, therefore left half of it
Food was very good, although not always exceptional. Prices for wine and cocktails are huge and not in line with the quality of the food.
A great Sunday with a touch of class along the way. Housed in a lovely 16th century building it charms before you even enter. There's a comfortable bar area with crackling fire if you arrive early, and the dining room is neutral and quiet. Service was friendly if on occasion mildly erroneous. The dishes are well thought out, beautifully presented and full of delicate flavour notes. It could be more generous in certain areas, but the value price point and low number of covers probably prevents this. A charming spot in rural(ish) Chobham, perfect for a light yomp across the common afterwards if you're in the mood.
Having been returning customers for a number of years, we are sincerely disappointed with our experience during this booking. Nothing that we requested on the menu was available (they had "run out" of key dishes). The other dishes were charged at a supplement that the restaurant manager refused to waive even given the circumstances. We ordered a dish and asked if it had a creamy based sauce (due to a dairy intolerance), we were told that it was fine, the dish arrived and it was creamy and therefore inedible. We asked for the house beer, again they had run out so requested a gin instead (which we were then charged £15 for). House gin not available either.
Having addressed this with the manager, we were informed that the restaurant was closing down and the staff weren't being paid. Completely unacceptable on all fronts. Sorely disappointed, this was supposed to be a special treat for family.
Stay away from this restaurant
Amazing tasting menu at Stovell's! We love our tasting menus and often frequent Michelin restaurants... this food, drink and restaurant experience was up there. Incredible food, perfectly matched wine and attentive friendly staff. We can't wait to go back!
Generally good but pricey. Was told wine I wanted sold out. Would I like another same varietal etc (but £15 more). Was surprised not Rey offered at same price. Asked for wine list again. This time list did not show wine I had originally asked for/so presume first wine list was out of date.
Otherwise cooking and service very good.
Went here for meal the food and the service where absolutley outstanding, the only thing for me is they add the service charge, but worth a visit for an oustanding dinning experiance
Excellent food, however the service could have been friendlier, we seemed more valued on previous occasions.
Stunning and pleasant dining experience.
We come here for most of our birthdays and anniversaries. We also had our wedding breakfast here. It’s been fabulous every time!
I have dined at Stovells many times before and it has always been VERY good, however in this instance our party left the restaurant disappointed but very jolly.
The issue was most of us failed to enjoy our main courses having all rated our first courses ( fabulous food gras). The sea bass for two ( £9 supplement) was both a silly mean portion and not enjoyed by either diner. The Pork dish was very fatty, extremely tough and arrived just about luke warm. The lemon soles were under seasoned - indeed bland - and again the portions were mean. The aubergine main course was delicious.
My suspicion was that the head chef was not on as the restaurant was virtually empty. Hence the disappointment over the standard of cooking. As ever, the service was fabulous.
I must stress that my previous experiences with Stovells have been excellent. I know that they care passionately about their food. I am putting this down as a one-off issue.
First time here. The food and service were excellent
Absolutely marvellous surprise. We had ,, Taste of Mexico" menu . Delicious and delicate.
No doubts , Micheline - star cuisine.
Also beautiful location, excellent parking and friendly staff.
The fish on the set menu was meant to be cod but when I arrived I was told it would be Seabass. I didn’t mind as it was still great just could of done with a light sauce or purée to go with the fish. Like a parsnip purée to add to the sweetness of the dish
Enjoyable meal in attractive surroundings, good food, good wine.
We had the 12 course Mexican tasting menu. The food was incredible, one of the best meal we've ever had and worthy of a Michelin star! The food is innovative, beautifully presented and the flavours are exquisite. The chef came to talk about us about the foods he grew up with in Mexico which inspired his menu. All the staff were friendly, extremely knowledgable about each course and very efficient but discreet. I would highly recommend Stovell's, we'll definitely be going back!
My birthday seemed like the perfect opportunity to visit Stovell’s, a restaurant I had long wanted to experience.
Whilst I can accept that there’s little chance of paying a reasonable price in such an establishment what I do hope for is an exceptional food experience. Whilst the food did look great on the plate my wife and I certainly agreed that our turkey mains were massively over salted. We had to down copious amounts of water during and after the meal for some hours.
A real shame that an otherwise very pleasant evening was spoilt by this.
All the food is amazing. Especially the little extra courses that they surprise you with.
Beautiful refined venue - creative cuisine and very polished service. Beautifully laid out restaurant, lovely snuggly bar area and then crisp and clean restaurant dining area. Not loud and the tables are well spaced out so you don't feel cluttered. Book far in advance as it only seats 60 people and seems to be consistently busy. We had a great 4 course meal for about £45 per head for food. We will definitely be coming to visit again. Was a really lovely evening.
The food is creative and well thought through, its a lovely menu!
It has been a while since we have dined at Stovell’s, I think over use on our part had taken the shine off the experience.
Therefore having left it for a while we had dinner on Saturday and the food was outstanding. It was a shame that a couple of the wines I picked had ran out but such is life.
Service was excellent as always, so I am now stuck with the desire to go back again at the drop of a hat and not wanting to over egg the pudding again!
I throughly recommend this restaurant.
The food was tasty but we found several bones in our sharing fish which I would not expect for a meal of this price.
There were only 4 tables taken on the evening we went but service by 1 waiter was slow and we had to try to catch his attention to order drinks and the bill
Excellent creative fine dining. However the service is not as attentive as on previous visits.
Amazing meal and atmosphere
A fascinating take on Mexican food and not something you would expect. The preparation of each course was meticulous and the amounts judged perfectly.
An average lunch. No one greeted us when we arrived. Once we'd found someone they got us confused with another party which didn't honour their booking resulting in a phone call while at the restaurant to say we hadn't shown up and an email saying we'd be charged for not coming. The only menu was the set menu, and the food was very average with some elements such as very tough leeks which were impossible to cut and unpleasant tasting petits fours. The service was okay, but no explanation of the dishes and if we had had more interaction we think we'd have chosen some side dishes, as the mains were very rich and needed sides. Overall very average - plus point very easy to park, but then that was because it was almost empty!
Fabulous lunch on the September special for a celebratory occasion. The food and wine were fantastic as always, the service excellent and great value for money. We will be back!!
The food and service is excellent, which is reflected in the price. A classic example of you get what you pay for
The meal was excellent. The restaurant wasn’t too busy which was actually quite nice and added to the atmosphere. The stag were atentative and made us feel liked valued customers.
Quality food and service with varied menu
Excellence in all areas of fine dining! From the moment you arrive the staff are looking after you. Each course of the meal elevates your experience and there is always a wine to accompany each course and dish. Fantastic!
What a dinner! I have dined at Stovell's a couple of times and I was very excited to try the new menu. It was just fab, the beef wellington was cooked perfectly. All aspects of all meals were put together in such a wonderful way, the presentation was like none I have ever seen and the flavours were just incredible.
I cannot recommend Stovell's enough.
We had the set lunch on a Saturday during the bank holiday weekend. It was very quite with just two other diners which was a little surprising, but we did eat early and it was a long weekend. The food was excellent though. It was our first time and really enjoyed it and thought it was quite good value for money. Couldn’t fault the presentation of the food either.
We would definitely come back.
Nice restaurant - food was excellent, interesting and varied. As expected of a relatively expensive 4 AA rosette eatery - small portions, exquisitely made and offering tastes which we all loved to experience. Not much happening on the beer front; poor choice and supplied option was uninspiring and comically frothy. A little disappointing that the menu seeks to offer a single price for 3 courses but some items are '£10 extra' and desirable side-dishes are also extra. We were one of around 6 tables dining (perhaps half full?) and we ran dry on a number of occasions .. easily rectified but surprising!
All in all, good food and a friendly atmosphere - we will return!
