What Insiders Are Saying
Highly affordable omakase sushi on the Upper West Side.
We arrived 10 mins early for our 12pm Open Table rsrvn. The staff was prepping the tables etc. When we sat down on the 4 side chairs in the wait area, the bleached-blonde hostess demanded that we leave immediately & come back at noon. We were a bit SHOCKED since we’ve never been treated so rudely during the many years that we’ve been coming here. The hostess even made an old man with emphysema equipment wait outside in the hot, humid day! WHAT HAPPENED to a favorite local restaurant?
Instead of miso soup or salad, you can chose ONLY ONE. The sushi rolls are now filled minimally with protein (eel; salmon; or tuna which was minced!) Smaller food portions for higher prices ($4-$5 increase). The only attentive staff was the water guy.
Very DISAPPOINTING experience especially for longtime customers like us. There’s many other better-valued Japanese restaurants in NYC, that are located centrally in Manhattan.
As good as it gets in this price range.
Love this place! Fantastic fresh sushi.
This was a great sushi place; will definitely come again. The lunch special is killer. Every time I come, I leave more than satisfied.
One bad thing happened
We were in conversation and were told
That reservations were waiting
We were there all of 80 minutes and ordered 4
Turned what would have been an excellent experience into a bad taste in the mouth
And I was celebrating my birthday
The best fish for the most reasonable prices. A true neighborhood gem.
Great place. Well made fresh sushi--authentic, always full of Japanese people. Excellent quality/value. A little crowded, noisy but efficient.
Simply delicious food and excellent prices. The sushi was delicious. The staff were very professional. My only complaint is how noisy it was. Perhaps that's inevitable at a restaurant that's always crowded because it's so good.
The food is terrific and the service is terrific as well. this is a very popular restaurant and reservations are a must. They open @ 5:15 and are full by 6PM. Maybe lunch is easier
I wish they had more interesting rolls. Just the usual. Everything is fresh.
This time we ordered the omakase and it was excellent!
Would love for there to be some more creative rolls. Food is fresh tasting.
Excellent food and service. Great neighborhood place.
Fabulous food- sushi and shrimp tempura were divine. Would definitely go back next time I am in nyc
Each time we return to Sushi Yasaka the food is consistently delicious, fresh, and well worth the money. We always bring our out of town friends and family to dinner and they are always impressed.
The restaurant can be quite noisy, but on a Sunday afternoon in August, the ambiance was calm. As always, food is fresh and expertly prepared.
High quality fresh fish at a reasonable price !
Excellent fresh sushi-good variety-very well run
Great food, a little crowded. Service was a little slow but good.
Food was very good, server could have been a little more interested and attentive however. Overall a very good experience.
The place was packed & the noise was deafening. Sushi rolls were not great. The spicy tuna barely had any tuna, the yellowtail was chopped up beyond recognition and the negimaki was so salty, it was sent back. Service was indifferent. For all the 5 star reviews, I was seriously disappointed.
Always fresh fish, great service, prompt handling of reservations. Excellent.
Authentic Japanese food in a neighborhood environment, love it
We've long enjoyed the great food at Sushi Yasaka, in spite of the spare, traditionally Japanese decor which made it very much a place to eat, if not to linger. Since last there, they've dressed the place up nicely. Though I wouldn't describe it as a remodel, they've introduced some dark colors and pin spot lights - just enough to warm the place up. More importantly, our recent meal was among the best sushi I've had in recent years. Absolutely fresh and delicious. We'll once again be going frequently!
With over 1000 yelp reviews garnering four-stars I would’ve expected the sushi to be exceptional. However it was only “good”. Three stars. Definitely not 4 for NYC sushi. We are in the big leagues here. So somewhat disappointing.
Fabulous food. Fresh sushi. The omakase was a great deal!
consistently outstanding quality and assortment of sushi; extremely fresh and presented inventively as omakase and the plated choices. gets crowded and loud by tables, yet remains reasonable seated at the sushi bar. robust menu with choices for any dietary regimen. really nice staff, too!
Great value for lunch. Loved the oyster.
Rude and unaccomodating hostess. Sushi good not great
As always was high quality and excellent service. Just noisy.
Great food. Quick service.
Consistently great! Best sushi on the UWS. Table is always ready when we make a reservation and the staff is very attentive.
Excellent omakase. In fact, maybe the best value omakase you'll find in NYC: the $28 mini includes six pieces and a roll, and the $55 standard one includes 12 pieces and a roll. The sushi deluxe is also terrific, with fresh fish that melts in your mouth.
Our server was very impatient and rude to us. We tried to ask her questions about the menu choices, but she just insisted that we look at the menu and choose from what’s there. Her English skills were very poor as well. She should not be working in a job where communication is essential for quality customer service. I will never visit this restaurant again.
Wonderful sushi and great value!
Very good Sushi!!
But not only the Sushi, we also good a few appetizers which were great. Don't miss the mushroom salad
One of the best Japanese sushi restaurants in the City.
Great food for a great price
Food was excellent but service was lackluster. It was busy but they had more than enough staff, most of them standing in the corner talking to each other. After they cleared our dinner plates, our waitress just brought our check. She didn't ask if we wanted dessert or anything else.
