Top notch food. Loved the street foods snacks/starters. Will come again.
Excellent food but the staff were rude and not at all what we had expected given an earlier meal at the restaurant Also the place is a bit tatty needs renovation a shame because the food is super
Service was a bit dismissive - I ordered a mocktail off the menu and the waiter looked at me like I was insane and just said ‘no’. Food very nice though!
Really nice, intimate Indian restaurant. Great selection of dishes, good value. Restaurant was full so service was a little slower than expected but understandable.
A good selection of dishes and great food. With the 50% off a good deal but expensive without. The service charge was steep so we didn't pay it. Really not sure I will be back which is a shame as this is quite local.
We had a thali plate each with bread, curries, chutneys and dessert all served on the same plate - there was so much food but all very tasty, for a reasonable price. Great location right opposite the station.
A lovely local restaurant serving an array of familiar curries, as well as thalis and smaller "street food". The service is brilliant, really friendly and welcoming and the food's great. The Hyderabadi Biryani is particularly excellent.
They didnt seem to want us there. No record of our booking. The main took ages to come out. Asked if we wanted anything else, he had the bill ready behind his back for when we said no. The door was opened for us the second we started putting our coats on. It wasnt so busy that there were people waiting for our table. Quite bizarre.
We have been to this restaurant a few times and always enjoyed the food. I enjoyed the thali options.
We had a fantastic meal! the staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. We shared a number of starters, all were great - then had our own Thali. There are plenty more things on the menu that i would want to try so will certainly be back soon!
Good food and excellent value for money. Pickles with popadoms bit disappointing.
Unfortunately, this small restaurant with a small kitchen has got caught the Deliveroo bug and spend more time serving those that have ordered online than guests actually in the restaurant. Booked for 8.45 and didn't get our food until 9.50 by which time we were past it. My starter wasn't available. So I asked for poppadoms instead. But they waited for me to finish my poppadoms before bringing anyone else's starter out. My friends were famished. The table next to us got their starter when they were already eating the main course. When I booked online I got 25% off but the bill was for the full amount. Luckily I noticed and they revised the bill for us. Food is good although overpriced. And you get the smallest amount of rice ever. Not a great experience and wouldn't rush to go back.
We went there in a big group to try the thali. We were disappointed with what was on offer. They ran out of so many items on the menu and on the drinks menu which was a surprise as the place was empty.
The food was not bad but could be much better. They do have good veg options though.
Time to try new places in the area.
Had high hopes for this place, the atmosphere was buzzing and menu looked good. The food, however, while of a high standard, was served only warm and cooled down very quickly, making it less enjoyable. Also the service was friendly but very slow and took a long time for the bill to come, and then for the credit card reader to arrive. Definitely has potential but some disappointing aspects.
Great food. Service definitely could have been better - "service with a smile"
Decor very basic. Door was left open.
If the idea was to re-crest a street food feel then the bill at over £60 for 2 was over priced.
Food was bland and nothing special.
Friendly, attentive staff and fabulously authentic Indian food. Good atmosphere, lots of people but they didn't rush us at all.
It's not flashy, nor really fancy but very enjoyable and great value.
Nice place to have some authentic Indian dishes.
Fabulous reception, fabulous food, and lovely staff/host. Small and cute for couples meal.
The menu is enticing and exciting, with options that you don't normally see in an Indian restaurant, such as squid. The flavours of everything we ordered were exquisite, packed with flavour and spice. Similar menu concept to Dishoom, but I thought the food was better. Highly recommended.
Really lovely, simple restaurant, amazing food and great service.
We enjoyed the vegetarian and chicken thali dishes very much - a great selection of dishes and the staff were very knowledgeable and helpful when we ordered, ensuring it would be to our taste (ie explained which one would be spicy and mild). Beautifully presented starters and thali. Only negative - rather pricey non-alcoholic drinks ! £4.00-£4.50 for bought-in lassi and mint lemonade.
This was my second visit on a Monday night, so the restaurant wasn't very busy, but we had great service and great food on both occassions. Ate too much but didn't regret it :)
Really great dinner. Went with my sister and we loved the food. The menu was just the right size and we even chose items we wouldn't normally. Portions were the perfect size.
Loved the thali. Plenty of food. Enjoyed the mini popadoms . Would go again
Decent food and service, pretty much standard curry though still enjoyed it. Shame that the restaurant didn't have the booking that I had reserved through opentable app. Though were very accommodating and found us table anyway.
Will be going back.
We visited this restaurant twice before for the Thalis which were great. The meal ends quickly so we decided to go and sample the starters , main courses etc and linger a little, The starters were bizarre. One called pav bhaji a small vegetable curry came with a buttered burger bun. Why not a puri? My partner chose some mini vegetable pies(can't remember the name ). They tasted like soap. The curries were better but hardly special. A dhansak advertised as three chillies in heat was mild and lacked that sweet and sour flavour. My partner's Rogan Josh was similarly unexciting. The best bit of the meal was the poppadum plate with chutneys. Service was efficient and friendly, though what the manager is up to parading around in a suit all the time I do not know. He needs to get into the kitchen and sort the food out. Stick to the thali if you visit.
This was my first experience dining at this restaurant. I will never go back again.
The starter of pani puri was filled to the brim with tasteless potatoes and no chance of filling it with the tamrind water provided. For main i ordered a fish curry (was meant to be spicy but was so bland and unenjoyable) and my partner order the butter chicken.
The first thing lacking from this was seasoning and the butter chicken was cooked with coconut milk.
Given that I am indian and do eat a lot of indian food I would consider myself a god judge. I will not be returning and will definitely not be recommending this place to anyone i know
Excellent value and diversity in their thali, definitely gets the thumbs up - quick and polite service - ideal for pre night out food...
We had a really great experience at Thali and Pickles. The staff were really accomodating and the food was fantastic, a really great selection and plenty of choice for vegetarians too. I would definitely recommend the Grand Thali's, Ive not had anything like this before. A really unique experience and I will definitely go back soon.
3rd time eating here, and slowly working our way through the menu. No duds yet. Service always very friendly, food always delicious, and really good value for money. Will be back for round 4.
Really disappointing. I was looking forward to having our own Masala Zone here in Balham, which is my go to Thali place. Staff were depressing to begin with, and food under seasoned (we literally added salt to every other mouthful). Food was just acceptable; not horrid but nothing to sign about. We sat by the kitchen and I watched in horror as they microwaved rice plate after another, I wonder how long it has been out for. This was all finished with the most awfully soggy and lacklustre Gulab Jamun I've ever tasted. Overall bad experience, I will certainly not go there again nor would I recommend it given the number of really good places around.
Love this place. I was very excited to go because it's the same company that runs Indian Room, which is one of my favourite places to eat. I wasn't disappointed. The food is delicious and the service is spot on - friendly and attentive just like at Indian Room. I had booked a table for two and even though my friend got held up and was about half an hour late, the staff didn't make me feel uncomfortable for taking up a table and just brought me a drink, offered me a poppadom basket (crunchy mini poppadoms with three lovely chutneys), then left me with my book until my friend arrived. We both ordered thalis and they kindly switched the chicken curry because my friend fancied something a bit spicier. You get so much for your money - my thali consisted of a delicious paneer curry, a bowl of pilau rice topped with crispy onions, a naan bread, a small bowl of saag aloo, a small bowl of dhal, a croquette, raita and lime pickle. We even got little syrupy puddings and a small glass of rose and cardamom lassi. We weren't rushed at all, which is a good thing because they is plenty of food (you definitely won't leave feeling hungry!). All in all, a brilliant experience. I couldn't fault the food or the service. I'll be going again soon.
The starters were good but I felt the mains were a bit dull. Everything ended up tasting the same. The sides sounded interesting but were a bit dull and overpriced, almost £4 for a small mango rice. The same for the popadom basket, overpriced for what you got.
It was busy to the point of ridiculous. There was little room to begin with, but once you have people standing at the tiny bar, waiting for a table, it becomes claustrophobic. In addition we were made to feel like we were taking up a table. A few times the waiting staff tried to take our plates away, while we were still eating! So not the most relaxing meal!
Having spent 2 months in India a few years ago, we were very used to the tasty variety a thali can offer. The difference between then and now was that we were able to sit and enjoy a long thali, not hurried along by the waiters who were very efficient and polite which also enabled us to enjoy the feast before us. Id recommend getting one lamb and one chicken Thali and sharing them, the spicy lamb complimented the creamy chicken. A delicious meal finished off perfectly with gulab!
