About

The Ambrette at Rye restaurant is the sister of the award winning Margate venture of the same name. Situated within the fabulous White Vine House on the High Street, The Ambrette at Rye provides a beautiful setting for any dining occasion, the grand Georgian frontage leading in to a light-filled bright and spacious wood-panelled dining room painted in white and hung with contemporary art prints. Priding themselves on a very high level of service, The Ambrette’s staff are not only friendly and professional but well turned out, an ideal partner to the fine cuisine of Head Chef Dev Biswal. Taking traditional recipes from India and breathing new life in to them with brand new creative ideas, Dev’s kitchen provides a unique dining experience blending East and West and using quality ingredients sourced ethically both locally and internationally. Vegetarians are very well catered for at The Ambrette while the wine list includes a good collection of both affordable and luxury wines.

Outstanding and unusual food - a UK-French trained chef of Indian origin, merging the two traditions to wonderful effect. Brilliant!

A real restaurant for foodies - fresh modern takes on the Indian genre. Very inventive dishes, beautifully presented and great flavours. It was a nice touch to have complimentary pre-starters and palate cleansers between dishes.

My wife and I were in no rush, but even so, the service was very slow! The staff were very apologetic and took some money off the bill. But it shouldn't take 3 hours to serve a table for two!

Value-wise; our bill (without the discounts) for 3 courses and a low-end wine would have been around £120. So not every-day dining, but a good special occasion if you aren't in a rush!

Just to let you all know our experience at the ambrette on this particular evening was pretty dreadful.
I have written direct to the owner of the ambrette and to date have not even had an acknowledgement or reply. I have now re-sent the letter requesting at least some response form them regarding our dining experience. This was overall very disappointing. We booked Asia group of eight friends and our friend who booked this has let me respond for us all.

My husband and I were in Rye for the weekend celebrating our first wedding anniversary and had read about The Ambrette so decided to give it a go. We were not disappointed. We often do tasting menus and have had mixed experiences but decided to do the tasting menu here. It was worth every penny!

The food is imaginative and flavorful. The 6-course tasting menu (which was more like 9 courses) consisted of dosai, soft-shell crab, pigeon, fish, venison and a chocolate dessert. Every single dish was a 10 our of 10. In addition to this, we also received a welcome cocktail, a samosa amuse bouche, soup and a palate cleanser. You will not leave hungry.

If I had to pick a favorite, I think the soft-shell crab was outstanding. But, again it was all incredbible. The pigeon and venison were cooked perfectly. The fish was delicate and not overwhelmed by the complex flavor. It was truly a special meal.

The service was also quite good. There was a mix up and they forgot to bring out our venison course but when we told them they immediately brought it out. The restaurant was getting quite packed at that point so it was understandable.

I would highly recommend The Ambrette and look forward to visiting again!

We had such a brilliant meal on 13th that we went back the very next evening to try out some more of the menu. It was equally good, and we were again seriously impressed by the flavours and interesting locally sourced ingredients. The service was attentive and unhurried, and we will definitely be returning when we are next in Rye (or Margate).

We have been to The Ambrette in Rye before, in the old premises and enjoyed it, and this occasion in the new location exceeded our expectations. The food was brilliantly well-cooked and the flavours outstanding. The complimentary cocktail, pre-starter and other intermediate goodies were wonderful - it was all so good that we went back for a repeat performance on the second night of our stay in Rye. (We've also been in the Margate restaurant and it's just as good). The combination of amazing cooking and locally sourced ingredients is utterly unique.

We visted The Ambrette for my wife's 40th birthday on the recommendation of my parents. We opted for the tasting menu which showcased local produced prepared and served with heavy influences from India. Particular highlights on the night included the wood pigeon and the venison, plus the popping candy granita hit the spot and added novelty value.
The restaurant itself had a nice feel about it and the staff were friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. We will certainly be back.

This was an outstanding dining experience in which the dishes were exquisitely presented and the timing between each was perfect for savouring the flavours. We opted for the vegetable main dishes and these involved adventurous combinations of okra, cauliflower, goats cheese and quinoa. We had a side of local sea vegetable which was a perfect accompaniment. The spices were fresh and authentic. The complimentary dishes of soup and seered beef were a lovely surprise and added to the feeling of the meal as an artwork. Both deserts were delicious, combining pear crumble with masala chai custard and a delicate wild rose creme brûlée.
An excellent choice and range of wine. The restaurant environment is elegant, light and relaxing. The staff are friendly and we didn't feel rushed.
We will definitely be back next time we visit Rye.

This is extremely delicious food, executed with finesse and presented with elan.
The dishes, spiced exquisitely and subtly with Indian spices. The granita palette cleanser, packed with a surprise, alone is worth the 2 hour trip from Chiswick to Rye, East Sussex.
The Ambrette has its own, singular style. Bravo!

From the front space we were led through to a light and airy space, all beautifully presented.

We chose the 3 course fixed price option, which was delicious from amuse bouche, starter, another amuse bouche! main course and desert.

Each course was a surprise in both presentation and flavours, all four of us were very pleased with the food and service.

We had a lovely family dinner with plenty of time for tastings and chat. the staff were friendly and offered suggestions (which really helps). We liked the extension of the meal with in between course snacks so I would recommend leaving plenty of time for your meal. More like an event than just food.

We had a wonderful experience some years back at your previous Rye location for a wedding anniversary and wished to repeat the experience. Your Canterbury restaurant is much closer for us and we've been there several times but we remembered the unique character of Rye and so decided we'd go there for another wedding anniversary meal.

We we so disappointed in the service. The food was wonderful and exactly what we've come to expect from you. However, everything was so slow. The waiting staff, while pleasant, seemed overburdened, rushed and inexperienced (for example offering no explanation as to the delay, not asking how the food was or if we would like more drinks, etc). We had made a reservation for 7:30. We arrived a few minutes late and were seated promptly. However, it was nearly three hours before we left again, solely due to the length of time it took for the meal to be served.

The room itself was so reverberantly noisy we could hardly hear one another (we're young with no hearing problems) and at times it seemed our servers were afflicted with the same problem.

Overall, though we loved the food, we wouldn't recommend this particular Ambrette. The atmosphere and service were something of a damper on our occasion.

Returned to Ambrette as previously really enjoyed it. It was the scallop festival but they had no scallop specials which belies a staid stuffiness which can easily lead to complacency. The amuse bouches were good and a nice touch. Pork main dish was chewy and disappointing. The claresse main was on the small side and too strongly sauced. The Ambrette needs to keep its eye on the ball if it doesn't want to lapse into stuffy mediocrity.

Went to Ambrette Rye for Valentines evening. We knew there was a Valentines menu, which was fine - and it had a good choice and we both enjoyed the food. This is the first time we have gone to Ambrette in Rye since they moved from the hotel to the new premises. I'm guessing that the need to get the basics done at reasonable price and quickly meant that it was in comparison with the old place a bit ... basic, bland ... or "clean". We liked the quirky nature of the old place ... need more art, more interesting features. Staff did their job, but not as attentively and friendly as previous visits. Still, will definitely venture there again.

We went for dinner on my partners Birthday. The food was beautifully presented and cooked. Most enjoyable. We had heard the service was very good, unfortunately this was not totally true of our experience as the drinks we ordered did not arrive on two occasions. The second time we had to ask three times. However, we would still recommend the Ambrette on the quality of the cuisine alone.

The food was really lovely, the best veal i have ever tasted, although the veg dish, did come with too much sauce.

The only thing that is wrong was the service. There was only three waiters, all were running around, there should have been much more staff, with sections of the restaurant to look after, it was so disorganised. They brought us the wrong wine, wrong meal and when asked for the desert menu, we got a wine list instead. It was impossible to get a waiters attention.

As expected very busy night on the 13th Feb, unfortunately very under staffed which resulted in poor service. The food was probably the worst we have had, both the pork loin and pheasant were dry and the sauce was over powering. I have been to the Ambrette many times and have never had such a poor evening....hope it is a one off.

Initially the table behind us were complaining about the quality of food being served, which set the tone.

My starter, pigeon was nice.

The mains took 45 minutes from my starter, which seemed a long time. When it arrived, I had venison, my wife pork, we were less than impressed. The venison itself was beautiful, but the rest of the dish was poor with the chef serving raw mushroom. My wife's pork was dry and a chop, rather than the advertised loin. The wine was nice though.

Overall it was a disappointing meal.

The staff were in agreement and understood why I was disappointed with the experience.

We love this restaurant and have been going for several years. Unfortunately on New Year's day and despite the restaurant not being busy, the service was very slow and just not up to their usual standard.
We will go back because the food is very good and the menu is unusual. Hopefully the service issues will prove to be a "one off"!

We decided to come to Rye at the last minute to celebrate the New Year. If it wasn't for toptable it would've been impossible to find anywhere at short notice for dinner. We were lucky to find a 730 slot ar Ambret. How lucky we were. It was fully booked for the evening, the ambience was excellent, the food and wine were delicious. Quite an expensive bill for the two of us, £120, but it was a special occasion and the food was exceptional. Unbelievable flavours so as a one off, a great experience

Second visit - very disappointing took some friends on our recommendation. Poor service, long gap between starter & mains - surprising as not very full. Food arrived on cold plates therefore not very warm, one of the puddings was not available - crème brulee which is not difficult to make or keep and then we were overcharged for puds that we ordered and then cancelled. In all nothing like as good as the first time.

This was our first visit ti The Ambrette since it relocated. The qualiy of the food hasn't changed, it's still top draw. I had the Wood Pidgeon followed by Venison, all cooked to perfection with the most exquisite spicing and only moderate heat to let the flavour of the meat shine through.

The service was far less fussy and formal from my previous experiences and was a certainly change for the better.

I highly recommend The Ambrette at Rye.

This was up there with the best food we've ever had. It was something completely different. England with a touch of India.
