The Anchor Pub
We serve fresh seasonal food using locally sourced ingredients, cask conditioned real ales, craft beers; wines from a carefully chosen innovative wine list. We provide friendly knowledgeable & relaxed service in picturesque surroundings.
Escape to our dining room where you can guarantee a fabulous view or experience al fresco dining overlooking the river during the summer months.
Why not spend an afternoon or the evening with us, take a punt on the river then enjoy a meal with us either before or after.
Great food, atmosphere and seating as always. Would highly recommend.
Good food at a reasonable price and excellent and thoughtful service.
Poor experience. Errors made twice with an order, some food served not hot. Very unfortunate, this place is trading off of its reputation and location rather than the quality of its food and drink.
Staff were very good ( Federico ) the food ok but could of been better . Wine list very good
The place near by the river is really nice.. The food and the whole service was very professional! I would recommend it and I will book a table again!
Can’t think of a more beautiful setting to eat and drink in the sunshine as we did on Thursday.
Food, service and ambience were great in the upstairs restaurant area. They were able to accommodate us, even thought we're were an hour late, we did phone to let them know and they made us feel it wasn't a problem. Really had a nice meal and a fab location over looking the river Cam, although sadly one of the windows was covered up with boarding, which spoilt the view slightly, but we had a nice time regardless.
We booked a table in advance as this pub is in a good location next to the river. First impressions weren't good as the exterior looks tatty and is covered in peeling paintwork. The interior isn't much better. We had arrived early but the upstairs dining room was closed and staff were very vague about when and where a table would be ready. We decided to sit outside until a table was available and ordered a bottle of French Chardonnay for £28. It wasn't chilled and the cooler was full of water not ice. We had to ask for ice and add ice to the wine we had already poured. That is simply not acceptable. We chose nachos to share as a starter and they arrived drowned in orange squirty cheese as did our dried up burgers. I wouldn't have thought it was too difficult to use 'real cheese' and a salad garnish would be nice! My son's fish and chips was slightly better although the skin hadn't been removed. Unfortunately the location of this place in no way makes up for the overall experience. A lot of work needs to be done all round!
Good food, good wine, mediocre service and terrible loos!
Prime location on the river with punt hire nextdoor so you'd at least expect a seat on the ladies loo! Not a good example for the tourists!
Just look out for the optional service charge. Otherwise all was great
After booking a table over a day in advance, we arrived expecting to have a lovely meal by the river. Since their website said "if you'd like to sit outside and eat then just ask when you turn up", so I did, and after much confusion as to why we'd want to sit outside on such a nice day, and being told we wouldn't "have the same experience or service", we went to order at the bar, but being greeted with "just to let you know, we don't have any hot food tonight" we decided to leave. Surely this is the exact purpose of giving the restaurant our phone number so that we can be called to be told they don't have any hot food? Disasterouse. Very disappointed.
A lovely Father’s Day celebration with a delicious roast dinner and very good service.
I would highly recommend it.
Had the loveliest meal here. There wasn’t a scrap of food left, all plates literally licked clean by us and the children. Will definitely be back. Service was great too, really friendly.
We were a party of six for a traditional pub lunch, the food was good, although the portion size a little small. The service was very slow to start with and took a long time to find the table we had booked.
I booked a table for my wife's birthday. On arrival we were told to find a table on the top floor. We sat in a bay window with a nice view overlooking the river. Unfortunately I am unable to review anything else about this restaurant as for the 30 mins we sat enjoying the view we were not asked if we wanted a drink nor were we offered any food so we left and went to find somewhere to eat. Happy birthday.
Clearly not a venue that looks for repeat business.
The food is marvellous. We mostly go for Sunday lunch. Plentiful choices. Everything we have ordered has been excellent.
Service is good.
Terrible service. Would not visit again.
First off, the food and staff were great, had very good Sunday roasts which were without fault, lovely! The kids menu was the usual, but when asked they said they do do a child sized roast which wasn’t advertised, so I think they need to promote that more because even my 7 yr old is sick of nuggets and chips everywhere! The only downside was on arrival the restaurant section was closed, we had been reserved a table in the bar area with no table service, although when the excellent staff were queried over this they kindly did take my order so I didn’t have to queue again. The pub is lively, busy and fun and overlooks the river so very pleasant. Will go back again
Good, honest pub food and good service. Relaxed atmosphere and great location with views of the river. Bit pricey for what it is and the loos were bad, no soap, no loo roll, one hand drier not working. Overall a good experience and I’d go back.
Waiter was good, very cheery. - just everything else sad to say. My sons starter arrived after 20 minutes - mine just under 10 mins later. A long wait for the mains - 2 roast beef, 1 chicken .... luke warm at best. Chicken dry and tasteless. Such a shame as pub is a lovely location. Lets hope it improves.
Great pub. Great food. Friendly service. But was way under staffed! Hire more people!
There were not enough staff working. We waited 30 minutes to order. Then waited almost 1 hour for the food. The only waiter was dealing with incoming clients, taking orders. Meanwhile hot food sat on hot plate for a good 20 minutes. No one got their food for a long time. Not enough staff. Poor communication, organisation and no management.
Really nice atmosphere, great views over Cam, and very friendly service. And the food was good. Can strongly recommend the horseradish sauce; roast potatoes were excellent if on the massive side. Great beer.
Our return visit. We had one Sunday roast (belly of pork) and one burger. My guest had the belly of pork which was delicious, however, my burger was disappointing. It came with stick French fries which were over cooked and hollow. The burger had the pulled pork on top, which was lovely but the burger itself was quite dry. I thought it was over priced. Next time, I'll stick to the roast as that seems the winning formula.
It is a lovely pub with beautiful views over the river. However, the place was completely understaffed; everything took forever, and it did not make for a nice atmosphere with all the manic running around. Also, wasn't convinced by the open kitchen - created noise and a feeling of stress. A pity, both food and atmosphere used to be amazing but this is now the third time it has not been great.
Over the last nine weeks we have tried lots of places to eat and drink in Cambridge and this seems to be favourite with the group I’m working with.
Poor service and tasteless food served with attitude
Slow service, not good value
From the moment we arrived the service excelled and the Sunday roast was amazing, I had the Suffolk chicken delicious
We went to the Anchor on New Years Eve. It was a nice experience. Meal was very tasty and good value for money. It was a bit noisy but it was NYE.
Food choices poor, expensive and was over charged!
Good food and atmosphere
Excellent evening, the staff (especially Chloe) were so lovely and accommodating. Excellent food, top beers and a cosy atmosphere- thanks Anchor!
Could be so much better
Clearly have trouble with large groups
Pie and a pint probably more enjoyable than a 3 - course meal
Idylic spot and a lovely old building crying out for a lick of paint
It was a quiet sunny lunchtime, we had a great time with colleagues we were meeting for the first time
Booked table for lunch on Thursday 13th. Single server for busy bar. Could not find our table and after 10 mins trying to get served at bar decided The Granta was better option!
Overpriced for very average food.
Went to Byron the following day and had a much better meal for around half the price.
We enjoyed fantastic meal and super puddings overlooking the Cam - very friendly staff overall a fantastic pub
Booked as it had outdoor space by the river but weather not great so ate inside. Food was decent but not great and the service was ok. Had to try and find someone to find out where our table was which took about 5 minutes. Very expensive for what we had. Clearly paying for location!
Really good food and location. The downside (possibly due to the steady stream of people) is that it was really dirty (I mean REALLY) and the food service was very slow.
