Amazing restaurant! We had a great time and will definitely go back! Have to have the cheese starter!
Exceptional food, great value, superb service with friendly and socially distancing staff. I’ve no hesitation in recommending The Anchor for a great Sunday roast
Thanks so much for your review and great to hear that you recommend us as word of mouth is really the best accolade for us. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. In the meantime, have a terrific Christmas and we will see you soon. Team Anchor
Excellent food, ambience and service. Festive decorations were lovely too.
Good to also see a pub actually following the restrictions too! Thank you. Will be back!
Hannah, Many thanks for your super review, it great to know when we get it right and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in 2021 when hopefully the world will be brighter and we can open our doors freely. It has been a very challenging year and to know you felt safe is exactly what we were trying to achieve. See you soon. Team Anchor
Rude and unhelpful service from the start, sat by a smelly kitchen with inadequate extractors and/or blinding lights, starters were passable but alll 4 main courses were awful (Katsu curry), overcooked/ tasteless (fish and chips), full of fat/ gristle (burger) and made one of our party very ill (haddock)- such a shame as our visit in August was excellent - perhaps a management issue.....
Sarah - we would love it if you could contact us directly to discuss this as it is definitely not how we run our business. We all care here at the Anchor.
why open if you feel the need to stick to such draconian rules. i understand that you cant order alcohol if you aren't eating but when does the meal end ?
we were chased out of the pub as soon as we had had our plates collected - I'm forced to ask why this was necessary ?
Around us students were sitting with plates on their tables and were allowed to do what they liked..
if i order a meal, when does it end ? is it with the last swallow or the last plate or what ?
i can order coffee or coke and sit at the table but i cant have beer - does drinking lager spread the virus? no..
interpret the rules in the way they were meant to be or just shut..
We would be delighted to welcome our guests in to be able to drink without the need to order food and we are sorry that you felt rushed, it was certainly not our intention. We are following the guidelines which have been stated by our Government and also reiterated by our local Council to keep our guests safe during these times. We look forward to being able to welcome all our guests back in normal times and be the best hosts that we know we can be.
The Anchor is a well known riverside pub in Cambridge. I’d already received a pre meal phone call to meet the current Covid safety requirements and this is carried through to all aspects of eating at the venue. Our waiter was polite, friendly and efficient (sorry didn’t get his name). The food was nicely presented and well cooked, within the current limitations of the menu. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can visit again
Mike, it is so lovely to hear that you enjoyed your time with us and we can not wait for normality to resume in these challenging times for hospitality. Thank you for your kind wodrs and we do indeed look forward to seeing you again soon.
Found the staff very rude, seeing as it was not very busy, we had to keep asking for their attention. Made up their own rules.
We are so sorry that we didn't meet your expectations it is truly challenging for us at this time however this is no reason that we should not be attentive or be perceived as rude. We are following the government guidelines and many guests expectations are different. We apologise if this is the way it came across as it is certainly not our intention. We do hope that this will not deter you from coming to us again and see us in doing what we do best.
By adopting ridiculously narrow and unwarranted interpretations of gvnt policy, management at the Anchor has imposed upon customers the impossible task of consuming wide amounts of alcohool with very little food. In view of the unreasonable and inflexible attitude of staff, neither myself, nor any of the other members of my household will, regretfully, be coming back to the Anchor at any time soon.
We would love nothing more that to be able to welcome our guests in and be able to drink without the need of having to order food. We are sorry to hear that you feel we have imposed these rules unwarranted but we are simply following the correct government guidelines which have also been reiterated by our local council to keep our guests safe in these unprecedented times.
Had a really enjoyable dinner.
Would have been nice for someone to come and check the meal was ok and for condiments etc.
We had to go looking for someone each time.
The staff were however pleasant and polite.
Great food, delicious roast, but unfortunately the service was so poor. It felt like we were an inconvenience and it was all very slow even though it didn’t appear to be busy at all, nobody bothered to do a check back/ ask how everything was, and we asked for more sauces which never came. Overall, quite disappointing
There was only one guy trying to serve almost the entire pub, totally ridiculous. Felt really sorry for him as he tried his best but people were left for long periods just “waiting “
Great location but food and drink were over priced and the service wasn’t great.
Great views across the river, excellent service and lovely food!
Delighted to hear that you had a wonderful time with us and appreciated us enough to review us. See you soon.
Excellent COVID precautions, staff alert yet relaxed.
Thank you so much for your feedback we are working hard to ensure we all feel safe and its great to hear that you felt that without it being too over bearing. See you soon!
The Sunday Roast was horrible and SO overpriced. The meat was fatty, they didn't even bring us Yorkshires even though they were listed on the menu, the potatoes were flavourless, the gravy was thin and oily, we ordered extra sides of Pigs in Blankets and Cauliflower Cheese for £4.50 each and they were the biggest waste of money. Tiny portions and the Cauliflower Cheese was orange and tasted really weird, and the Pigs in Blankets were grisly and cheap. The restaurant was cold also and not very relaxing atmosphere. Also you aren't able to split the bill any more due to Covid rules which I fail to see the reasoning behind. I've never been more upset to pay for a meal, feel like I literally threw my money away.
We are so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your roast with us, it is definately not the norm. We did run out of Yorkshire puddings later in the day but managed to cook some more! We for sure should have let you know and replace them with something else. We will always resolve any issues on the day should you bring them to our attention and would never want you to leave us so upset.
We had a delicious Sunday roast. The staff were very friendly and the service impeccable. Highly recommend and would definitely visit again
We are delighted that you had a great time with us and thank you for taking the time review. We look forward to seeing you again soon and of course we will pass your comments on to our Chefs.
Tasty food, prompt service. I had the roast chicken, although wasnt offered choice between joints or breast meat. Was given joints-prefer breast meat. Side of pigs in blankets and stuffing was tasty but over-priced. Everything clean and distanced. Busy still.
Complicated log-in for covid - uses own qr system and texts etc
Hi Caroline, with the half roast chicken you get some of both breast and leg meat. We often do regular competitor visits and find that we are well priced in the area. We are super Covid friendly and our team will always help those who need it.
Lovely pub food, good service. We sat inside near the door to the outside seating area, on the whole it felt as if diners were well spaced out and that the Anchor has put Covid-safe measures in place very successfully. Would certainly recommend.
Many thanks for your review and our guest and team safety is paramount. We are delighted to hear that you had a great time and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Staff were friendly and good service. We had the fish and chips which was amazing!! Highly recommend
We had to wait at the door for 20 minutes even though we had a reservation
Good Evening, Thank you for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your food and service with us however we do apologise that you had a longer wait in the queue than you expected. With the COVID restrictions, it can take a longer time to get all of our guests to track and trace before entering the pub however we are always looking at more efficient ways to combat this. Thank you for your patience with us! Kind regards, The Anchor
Three of us went for drinks and had an extremely good experience. We got a secluded table with lots of space between us and other customers and the whole evening felt very safe. Good Camden pale ale as well.
Good Morning! Thank you for your review!! We aim to make everybody as safe and inclusive as possible! We are extremely happy that you enjoyed your time with us! We can't wait to welcome you back again soon and don't forget to check out our social media for all the exciting news we have to share! Kind regards, Lauren
Lovely view, Sunday roast was poor and the service was slow and almost non-existent
Slow service. 2 out of 3 meals lukewarm and returned as a result our group did not eat together. Food was nice but service poor. Waited 15 mins to have order taken. Would not go back.
Couldn’t fault the food. However the quality of service was poor. We had pre booked and arrived early but were brought to our table promptly. However we then had a wait of around 20 minutes before we were asked about drinks. Then during the meal we requested another drink and didn’t receive that for 30 to 40 minutes after ordering and asking where the drinks were 3 times. That spoilt what was otherwise would have been a very positive experience.
Came to the anchor for a quick bite for lunch and was massively impressed by the covid procedures in place, service and food quality. The club sandwich was perfect for a quick lunch before I headed back to work, and for only a tenner it came with ample chips and lovely bread. Highly recommend.
Good Morning GaryW! Thank you for your review, we are extremely happy that you enjoyed your time with us and we managed to score 5 stars across the board! We look forward to welcoming you back again soon! Kind regards, The Anchor
We came for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our time and had a lovely welcome from Kirsty who showed us to our table and told us about the Covid procedures. Gary looked after us well an definitely deserves a mention! We would recommend to our friends and will be back next time we are in Cambridge.
Good Afternoon Jules! Thank you so much for your kind review, I will be sure to pass your comments on to the team! We really look forward to seeing you again soon! Kind regards, The Anchor
For food and location, the Anchor is a fantastic choice. The weather was awful, so we sat inside but still got beautiful views of the river. The food was delicious - best pulled pork nachos I've ever had! Jerk chicken needed more spice but everyone else really enjoyed theirs. The service was a bit all over the place - firstly we were a party of 6 and were sat at a table for 4 people, even though I had booked weeks in advance. Luckily, we were able to be seated elsewhere. We found the food to came out in dribs and drabs for the mains and then we struggled to get the attention of a server to come and take our plates to then order desserts. We ran out of time and had to leave to meet our cab, which was a shame. I would return though - it was a lovely pub and the food is worth going back for!
Good Afternoon! I will pass on your lovely comments to the kitchen team, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your food with us. Our sincerest apologies for the inconveniences that you had during your time with us. With all the new staff we have due to lock down, we are on a steady progression back to the correct level of outstanding service that we would like to be known for. We are excited to welcome you back in the future so we can show you what we are really capable of! The Anchor
Good food and lovely location. Very busy and service average .Meals arrived no knives and forks ,took a while to arrive as busy on other tables .
Also congested at entrance as people there without reservations ,blocking entry for those with bookings . Once inside felt comfortable with COVID procedures .
Good Afternoon, We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you had felt safe once inside the pub. We aim to ensure all of our guests feel this way. We are sorry that you had experienced congestion within the entrance of the pub, this is something I will forward onto the hosting team. Thank you for your review! We hope to see you again soon. Kind regards, The Anchor
Attentive service, very good pub food (especially the fried chicken) in a very nice setting with a terrace on the river Cam. Strict following of covid regulations (also a very good point).
Good Afternoon! Thank you so much for your time in writing this review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your dine with us! We assure all customers that we are strict with the COVID regulations but this is to help ensure the safety of not only our customers but our wonderful team as well! We hope to see you again soon, please visit our Facebook or Instagram profiles to see the exciting things coming up! Kind regards, The Anchor
The views were great and the service fantastic! Great experience!
Good Afternoon! Thank you for your review! We are absolutely delighted that you enjoyed your time with us! We cannot wait to welcome you back in the doors real soon! Don’t forget that it’s OKTOBERFEST at the anchor until 4th October!!! Kind regards, The Anchor
Pretty cold downstairs, some food really good, fish and chips quite soggy and greasy
In our first visit we Went here just for drinks. Although we had not booked, the manager was quite rude, we did get a table outside and even when an indoor table came available, and the waitress ask the manager If we could have it he still said no.
In our second visit my son got the incorrect meal after being given a normal menu and not the Sunday menu. We had finished when his alternative meal arrived and although an apology was given, they still added a service charge at the end, which considering our order was incorrect was a bit of a kick in the teeth. And on leaving my son did say by to the staff and he was ignored. Won’t be returning
really good food and nice ambience. The service was fast and friendly
Good Afternoon! Thank you so much for your kind review! We are extremely happy that you enjoyed your time with us, we look forward to welcoming you back soon! Kind regards, The Anchor
Food very expensive, £5 for a small pork pie or sausage roll.
Good Afternoon, Thank you for your review, we are sorry that you feel that way. All of our bar snacks are made fresh, in house each day. We do however have two days left of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and would love it if you would come down and enjoy 50% off all food and soft drinks. Maybe we could change your mind about the pricing of our menu! Kind regards, The Anchor
Really enjoyed lunch at the anchor with my husband. The food was very nice. Staff very friendly all in all really good. The 2 only negatives are it was quite noisy & I thought a large glass of red was ridiculously priced. We will visit again but I will not be having a large glass of red.
Good Afternoon! Thank you for your kind review, we are so pleased that we have almost reached all expectations! The music in the pub can always be quietened if this is the cause of the noise level, we can always lower this at any request! We hope to see you again real soon! Kind regards, The Anchor
Excellent service, food and ambience. Good welcome and much improved Covid19 provisions.
Thank you so much for the kind words Johnathon, we are always aiming to provide the best service possible and the ongoing COVID changes are sometimes difficult to manage but we are glad we have managed to improve on our systems so far!
Great service in difficult times. Staff very accommodating! Thank you!
Good Afternoon MartinL! We are so pleased that you have enjoyed your time with us, I will pass on your lovely comments to the team! We hope to see you again real soon! Kind regards, The Anchor
Unfortunately the food wasn’t great. We were lucky to be in the sunshine which helped, but we had the chicken wings, monkfish scampi both were average - wings were tiny and scampi was only 6 small pieces in the portion. The patron peppers were not cooked properly so we’re still crunchy. Shame as we were so pleased that they were back open.
Friendly service and it felt very well organised and safe. good food and a lovely view
Gorgeous food, apart from the veg needed a bit of extra cooking/was quite hard to cut into and the cauliflower cheese sauce and gravy was a bit too watery - but everything else was really tasty and overall good.
Lovely, friendly service too and fantastic setting by the river.
Have had their fish and chips before and wow, absolutely right up there with the best!!
