Although the patio was not open (too early & cold), we were welcomed by many familiar faces! Thanks to John (sommelier) & waiters like Rory, Rusty & Kirsten we had a wonderful indoor brunch. Brut Rose & a muffin basket stated the feast.This chef is excellent & we were happy with all the dishes we chose. We both wisely chose asparagus soup served in handmade stoneware bowls (that should be sold in their Apothecary). Barry had a BLTC Burger w/ crispy fries while I enjoyed short ribs & polenta. The multi-layered chocolate cake & blood orange panna cotta were superb. As was the cappuccino w/ rock candy on a stick (half the size that we prefer). When the weather warms up & their garden has more than crocuses, snow drops & hellebores we will return!

We dined last Friday night and had a wonderful dinner. We shared a simple bottle of Prosecco and enjoyed the Frito Misto as an appetizer. It was perfect! For dinner I had the crab cakes and my husband and the filet. Both were very tasty. For dessert, my husband had the pavlova with stone fruit. It was outstanding. Not something that I would have made at home. We will return!

My wife and I had eaten lunch before and this was our first dinner at the Ashby Inn. They had a special Valentine's menu, which was fantastic. Great wine choices available as well. Very enjoyable meal from start to finish.

Have had some bad experiences at Ashby over the years but our experience this weekend was tops. Warm and cosy ambience in the parlor with the fireplace, really outstanding food and service. All four of us loved our various selections. I do not usually eat quail (they were out of Dover sole) but the one I ordered was delicious. Word to the wise. My husband always orders Glenlivet scotch on the rocks. He was a bit surprised when the check arrived that it was $30 per glass! They must have served him Black Label without asking. The price on the other cocktails on our check were as expected. We will go back.

Possibly the best meal in many years. Butternut squash bisque was artistic and extraordinary. Crab cakes were fabulous and filet was perfect. Chocolate caramel tart was extreme and should require a permit. Wonderful ambiance and service. Highly recommend.

The Ashby Inn is back! I had been discouraged in past visits --primarily disappointed in the food. But last three visits, including a lunch and a dinner were incredible. The food is back to its exalted reputation when the Shermans ran the Inn and put it on the map. The sommelier was knowledgeable and helpful, the food was cooked perfectly and our server, Kirsten (sp?) is a delight. Worth the effort to get there and perfect for a cozy winter evening by the fire or a sunny lunch on the porch. Can't wait to go back

My wife and I had a nice time at The Ashby Inn restaurant. The setting was very nice and the service was outstanding! The dinner was delicious but the desert stole the show. The beignets were perfect! Misty, our server, was outstanding and made our first time here perfect.

Too pricey for the quality of the food. Seems much higher than last we were there. Staff is great, but two crab cakes for $50? Uh uh.
A wonderful experience from the time we walked in the door till the time we walked out. The waiter was excellent. He was extremely engaging. The food was excellent as well. The 3 course lunch for $40 was a very deal. An excellent bottle of wine made everything outstanding. I would highly recommend and can’t wait to return.

To say we were disappointed is understatement! We had heard good things about Ashby Inn, but New Years Eve dinner was not good. The menu selections were poor and branzino we had was dry and little flavor, one guest in our part had the quail and commented it was not good.
The Inn was nice but they need to have a much plan on special nights like NYE.
Wonderful brunch at the Ashby! Would recommend.

Last night we took starlit backroads to the best dining experience in Virginia-
Our 4top showed up like lost coyotes, but were received and seated like Paris aristocrats on a Friday night.
After a cursory view of the menu, a table visit from Virginia native and folk-savant Chef John Leonard provided a casual tasting of Ashby Inn's locally sourced micro-greens- the complexities of baby Nasturtiums and baby corn shoots were some of our favorite bites, and we all smiled like rabbits when they reappeared garnishing our small plates and mains..
The understated and authentic dining room held court to our Sommelier's clear and succinct introduction to Italy's Barolo region via a bottle of SERRALUNGA D'ALBA 2014 at a very fair price point (did you know Barolo's are required to age for five years before they are bottled? we didn't). The wine was so good I think we toasted twice to every pour..
The Crabcakes and Arugula/beet salad ordered for the table were irreverently turned into sliders with the table's fresh bread- wiping them across the salad plate to make a tie-die palette out of the salad dressing and golden beets while we laughed like emperors.
A round of piping hot butter nut squash soup opened our stomachs before our mains arrived and circled around the table: Smoked duck (better than any hanging in Chinatown); perfectly crusted NY strip; Scallops (a favorite); and the linguini cut from zucchini with lentil Bolognese was an absolute cinderella story.
The entree portions were athletic, but Chef John's combinations of rich and fresh keep the meal balanced, and a pot of mint tea for the table made room for desert: a blood orange pana cotta that looked like a bouquet of cream and fruit painted by a sweet-toothed Monet. I don't know how I got home, but when I woke up, I was sad it wasn't next to the Pana Cotta. FIVE STARS.

Great Christmas Eve dinner at Ashby Inn! Chef John Leonard NEVER disappoints and this holiday dinner with family was outstanding! Clams Casino appetizer was super: very tender clams. Scallop and beef entrees were both perfectly cooked and very tasty. We usually go for brunch but we will be back for dinner more often!

We Brought friends who had never been to The Ashby before. We sat downstairs near the fire, wonderful ambience! Our friends got the steak and they both said it was the best they have had in years. They will be back and they will tell their son about it . We had a fabulous time, and as always Chef and the hard working staff took such good care of us!

Such a great evening seeing the folks at The Ashby Inn! Chef’s Mushroom Strudel appetizer was the first thing I had to have, Just as delicious as I remembered! The New York Strip was tender and tasty cooked medium rare just the way we like it! Fabulous wine selection; we chose Glen Manor Cab Franc which paired perfectly! Topped off the evening with Bourbon peach beignets and a Peppermint Latte. YUM!!!

The ambiance is romantic, the service impeccable, and the food divine. The new chef (well new as of 6 or 7 months ago) has completely wowed me. Get the baked clams, fois gras, and pretty much any entree and you'll be content.

Nestled in a tiny town in Virginia's hunt country, the Ashby Inn is a lovely respite from the noise and often impatient service of urban and suburban eateries - and the food is first rate. The staff is warm, friendly and helpful. While the menu has avoided unfamiliar and/or pretentious dishes that sometimes scare people away from haute cuisine, familiar dishes are accompanied by unexpectedly creative garnishes and sides; for example, mushrooms and pumpkin with sea scallops. We had the restaurant to ourselves for most of our evening - it was a weeknight, early - so the atmosphere was very peaceful, with one exception: Christmas music from a local radio station included abrupt commercials that spoiled the holiday mood a bit!

It is better to go there in the summer. You can sit outside and the grounds are very pretty. I ordered steak and eggs and asked if I could have an omelette instead of eggs. They charged $9 extra for the upgrade. I ordered the steak medium-well and towards the center it was medium-rare. Since the meat came pre-sliced, it would have been easy for the chef to see it was not cooked enough. I ordered two steak and eggs, one for my wife. I complained about mine but not hers and they did not ask about hers. They voluntarily took the $21 off the steak and eggs I complained about.
It is a nice out of the way place to eat. They also have rooms to spend the night and the rooms are reasonably priced. There does not appear to be much to do in the area.
I probably will not go back until summer, if then. I like omelettes and they only had one and it had smoked salmon in it - not my cup of tea.
But if you are in the area or wish to go for a drive, as we do, it is a nice place to spend the night or have breakfast, lunch, dinner. Parking is in the back. Hours of operation are limited and rigid, so check before you go. Most of the time they are empty but during holidays they are packed. They use Open Table for their reservations.
The waitress did not seem to know what to do when I complained about the steak. She offered to bring me another but I told her I was full by then. The staff and manager needs more training on how to deal with customers who are not happy with the food they received.
I have eaten there several times. The chef appears to like salt, although none were on the tables and he seems to like to under cook. During a prior visit, the waitress alerted me to that fact and recommended I order well done.
The menu says, "Steak & Eggs, Eggs Your Way, Petit Salad, Home Fries 21". The steak came with melted butter on top. I did not like that and used my napkin to soak up the butter. Nothing on the menu alluded to them pouring butter on top of the steak.
My husband had I have enjoyed coming to The Ashby Inn for over 28 years. We drive there from Alexandria and always feel that the trip is well worth the effort. We went there for Thanksgiving about 25 years ago, when our daughter was almost one years old, and we have taken relatives there who are visiting us for special events. I also chose it last summer to celebrate my 60th birthday. Last Friday night, we took our son and daughter there, as they have not been back since they’ve “grown up,” finished colleges and started working in the DC area. They loved it; the food, the atmosphere, our table where we sat by the lovely fireplace, along with the excellent service. They said it is now one of their favorite restaurants too!

Charming location and pleasant staff. The food was a mixed bag. The salad and soup were as fine as one could ever hope for, particularly the beet and greens salad. The bread basket was excellent, but the desserts were very disappointing given the tough, almost inedible pie dough. How could someone with a fine hand at biscuits be such a poor do at pie dough? It's difficult to believe that anyone in the kitchen actually tried the desserts before sending them out for others to eat.
