Located on the ground floor of Sofitel London St James, The Balcon has a separate entrance on Pall Mall. Close to the recognised landmarks of Trafalgar Square and Regent Street, The Balcon restaurant features double height ceiling and impressive oak spiral staircases that give a sense of theatricality.

The Balcon is an all-day dining destination, perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it is also ideal for a morning tea and savouries, an afternoon tea with a French touch, and a pre-theatre dinner.

Showing Head Chef, Matt Greenwood’s passion for local produce, the menu uses seasonal ingredients and offers traditional French dishes such as steak tartare, lemon sole meunière and foie gras cottage pie. For a luxury experience, a selection of Sturia caviars is also available, to enjoy with a glass of champagne.

Nice decor in a great location. The food was not as great. Foie gras starter had a small rondelle of foie gras on a far too large slice of bread, bitter rocket salad made it almost unpleasant. Scallops were good. Duck was ok, but piled on top of cabbage and mash was a dire presentation. The burger was bland and flavourless.

We were greeted with a warm welcome. There was a long wait in between courses and the food itself was mediocre, particularly as the sea bass I ordered was completely raw inside and on telling them, they cooked the fish and served the half eaten fish on the plate again. This made me worried about whether the risotto underneath was contaminated with the raw fish.
All in all I feel the food was not worth the price, however the staff were very attentive.

My Husband and I have been to the Balcon many times. This visit was to celebrate his 70th Birthday; unfortunately, the service on this visit was not what I had come to expect from the Restaurant. We had long delays waiting for our food. Although the service team and manager gave us complementary drinks to apologise for the situation, it did spoil the event slightly.

This is the first time we have been to this restaurant as we do not live in London we where in London to watch a show just round the corner we found this restaurant online and where very pleased as it was so close to the theatre and looked a high end restaurant everything started ok but was soon apparent the waiters waitresses seemed more attentive to the bigger tables as ours was a table for two I asked one of the waitresses for some more butter which never turned up then we got our main course we both had steak I had the fillet and my husband had sirloin my fillet was very nice but my husband only ate half the sirloin as it was very tough and lots of sinew we told the waiter who gave us a free desert which hardly makes up for a £30 piece of steak if a restaurant is going to price itself at the top end of the market it should produce top end food and service also we had no starter as the scallops had been sold out apparently and there was no other starter we fancied if I am going to be completely honest I have had better steak meals out at less than half the price so will definitely not be going to the balcon again which I know will not matter an awful lot to the balcon as I only go to London two or three times a year but if there chef keeps serving sub standard food I would be surprised if people keep going back there to spend a lot of money on very average food

Chips were overly salty. For £4 for a small portion I would expect better. Steak was also lukewarm. Bread was cold. The scallop starter and desert was however very lovely, would recommend those.

The Balcon deco is elegant and the ambiance is would be great for a romantic dinner or for a celebration. However, the service and food do not match up to the beauty of the place. And for the cost of the dinnery, you will certainly find somewhere else to go where the ambiance, food, service and cost are all lined with each other.

The Balcon has an old world sophistication look to it’s decor. The first impression is definitely luxury. My only complaint would be that the lighting is quite bright which I think takes away from the overall look and feel.
The food was of a really good quality. Well made with good sized portions which can sometimes be missing from similar establishments. The desserts would be the only let down but maybe we just picked badly.
My biggest gripe would be the service. I found our waiter to be condescending at best. The water we poured ourselves in the main, clearing the table was slow, no one checked on whether we were enjoying our meal. All of these things wouldn’t be an issue if it wasn’t somewhere that you can easily spend £150 per person, the service needs to match the price.

Photo's are somewhat deceiving.
It's part of a hotel and it feels that way.
The balcon itself is great.
Also the food seems quite affordable, but then you find out that the portions are really focussed on 3 course meals. If you are a normal eater - just a main will not be enough.

All that being said - the quality of the food was very high.
Feels like a GREAT place for a business lunch / dinner - but not the kind of place I would normally frequent.

Good food and nice service but it was too expensive for the amount on every plate. Good wines also but very expensive all of them. We paid 60£ each for two starters, 5 main courses and 1 desert to share.

picked this place as had good reviews on Trip Adviser and had passed it many times and it looked good. To be fair food was very nice but it was let down by the service.

Pre drink in bar very nice. Good bar staff and good, but expensive, cocktail list

Taken to table but left for a good 15 mins before being given menus. Then too long before taking wine order or food order.

Wine was poured too quickly and splashed on table. Never seen that before! Wine was left in cooler for waiter to pour but waiter didn't come back enough and so my glass and my guests were left dry too long. (I have no problem pouring my own wine but it was left about 10 feet away so not for me to pour!!)

Lots of staff milling about but none seemed to want to tend to our table

When bill arrived I refused to pay the service and the manager came over to ask if I was unhappy. When I explained reason he was extremely apologetic and took service off immediately.

Best part of evening was the Crepe Suzette made at the table which was fun!

Shame about the service as its a lovely place and food is good

Such a rare find - very good food, but not too posh. There were 8 of us including 2 children on a Saturday evening, we got a great table where we weren't in peoples way and the children didn't need to be quiet, the service was excellent, the bill was very reasonable ... and to top it off, we had the best raspberry souffle ever, and we eat out a lot at very nice places. Highly recommend The Balcon!

The staff were amazing - thoughtful and kind and very patient with the fact that one of our party was running horrible late. The food was delicious (had the venison and then the gurnard), the wine was exquisite and the room felt super Christmassy; right down to the enormous Christmas tree outside the door in Piccadilly. Recommended.

A return visit to this favourite for an early pre-theatre dinner, and always a good choice for the theatres around Haymarket and Piccadilly. Although quiet when we arrived custom steadily built up into the evening. We chose from the wide ranging a la carte menu although a lighter set menu was also offered. No complaints atall about our food choices and service was professional, skilled and timely. A pricier option than we often go for pre-theatre but worth it for the quality of food and service.

The Balcon is the restaurant within the Five Star Sofitel St James Hotel in Central London just south of Piccadilly Circus (so very easy to get to by tube). Many hotel restaurants serve terrible food The Balcon is an exception. The meal was divine, the service impeccable, the wine list deep but reasonable, and they even have daily specials. I would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. Ask for a table on the raised Banquet if you want quiet conversation. We have been to this restaurant many times and it never disappoints.

My friend and I booked an early 5 pm dinner in between shows at the West End on a rainy Saturday. We were greeted warmly by the waiters and waitresses, attended to well, and given excellent service at each course including recommendations for desserts. Our 3-course dinner with a shared bottle of wine amounted only to £100 which was excellent value for a 2-hour relaxing dinner that nourished us for the rest of the dinner.
