Our latest incarnation, re-opened in September 2014 following a major refurbishment, boasts a light airy dining room seating up to 100, a bar area which includes or “Thomas Grub” function space and a beautiful decked garden built around an historic sycamore tree. Our new Vinery, an indoor/outdoor, fully heated, awning area, enclosed in the winter to provide a great space for pre-dinner drinks and canapés, and open in the summer for al-fresco dining

The food was absolutely disgusting. I had flat iron chicken. Cheapest cut of meat, more skin and fat than meat. Swimming in grease.
Service charge has been added since Covid but it is a rip off plus compulsory charity donation. Drink prices hiked too.
All of us thought are different meals were bad. Basically I would not eat at this place until Covid situation is over.
Hello Matthew, I'm sorry you feel this way about the food. We use only the freshest ingredients and all our dishes are cooked on site. We would usually add service charge to tables that have dined with us and received service but this is discretionary, as stated on the menu. Drinks prices have not been increased as a result of the current situation. The charity donation, whilst being a great cause, is also optional, there is no requirement to pay that. No clear communication on whether we need to wear masks away from our table, whether we were to order via the QR code or via a server. Very poor communication and honestly made me not want to return during covid times if basic safety measures arent explained to customers.

Short queue to get whilst everyone gave relevant details, then friendly staff showed us to the table, gave instructions on when to use mask and handed out menus. Waitress quickly came and took our drinks order, brought drinks and took food order. Everyone was very pleased with quality and price of food, staff were very helpful and pleasant throughout. Social distancing rules were observed and we had a great meal and lovely evening.

Having been to the BFS many times we were a bit disappointed with the amount we had to wait. It took over an hour and asking several times for the food to arrive. I’m sure it was a one off though as usually really good.

Was not friendly at all, came here with a friend, was not impressed. I understand the new guidelines on walking to tables with your mask on and being seated, yet with not everyone following the rules, quite hypocritical.
Food was good, very noisy however and was not easy to let the waitress taking our order understand us.
Hello, I'm sorry that you came away with these negative feelings. I am very proud of the way the team has coped with implementing all of the new rules and legally enforceable regulations, although at times it has been a challenge. I don't believe that we have been hypocritical at all, all of our staff are obliged to wear masks while on duty and this is what we do to protect ourselves and our guests. We are doing our best during what is clearly a difficult time for the industry that we love.
Great meal at the Stag today with the bar and waiting team very in control of their sensible COVID restrictions and the kitchen on particularly good form. Couldn’t fault it for a very enjoyable meal out in the pub garden.

Our first time to visit, as we've moved to the area. Have tried other local pub grub - all great.

Food was disappointing.
Soft shell crab, tasted strange.
Too much pastry on the pork pie.
Sirloin steak was well flavoured & tasted fine, but it looked prepared with a shade of grey.
Crumble in my 11 year olds words was like 'stewed apple with some trail mix' popped on top.
I'd heard good reports, but expected more. We won't be back to eat unfortunately.
But a nice venue for a drink.

Poor service, most of the food was good but the burger was disappointing. Think they were overwhelmed due to being fully booked but we didn’t feel this justified the poor service.

we had a lovely lunch for four taking advantage of the 'Eat out to help out' scheme.
the service was great, we werent rushed and ended up spending most of the afternoon there. The food was excellent, i cant recommend the truffle mac and cheese enough! would thoroughly recommend!

You were left standing at the doorFor ages as no staff in sight. No explanation of how to order - we discovered later having waited at the bar for the 1 bar person to serve us, that staff can take orders at the table. Also there is an App displayed on a very small poster but it does not show what is available as according to staff it had not been updated? Food was fantastic but staff need a bit more clarity in their roles and communication with customers.
Hello Suzanne, I'm sorry you were left feeling this way. We have put in a number of measures to make sure that guests and staff feel safe visiting the pub including a dedicated door host. Obviously when it is busy the host may be busy seating other guests so apologies if you felt overlooked or that you had been waiting a long time. First post-lockdown meal with a friend. As requested on the website, I booked online and was told that outside tables could not be booked and were on a first come first served basis.
There weren't enough staff on when I arrived, so I had to wait to be seated for about 5 minutes. I had texted my friend as I arrived at the bar and he thought I'd got lost.
It was a hot night and it would have been lovely to sit outside, there were a couple of empty tables, but we were told they were reserved. We asked a couple of times after that as the beer garden emptied, but no one cared enough to help us move to an outside table.
It was fine, but just annoying, in the Covid world we are reliant on staff to tell us when and where we can go and if the staff aren't great, it can really affect an evening
Hello Greg, I'm sorry that you were unable to get the table outside that you were after. The tables outside are allocated on a first come first served basis. Due to an error with our reservation system we had some tables booked outside that we had to honour. I don't understand why you would not have been able to move outside once tables became available and am sorry that this had an impact on your night. Waited an incredibly long time for food then only got a half portion. I know there is a government offer on but I didn’t expect to get 50% off and 50% of the normal portion. Also my friend ordered a chicken pie that contained small sharp bones, wasn’t impressed and would not return.
Hello Claire, firstly I would like to apologise that you found bones in your pie. We do make them fresh on-site and although it shouldn't happen there is always a possibility that small bones could be present. The pie is also cooked to order and not held hot, so this usually results in a longer than normal wait time for your meal, although this should have been communicated when you placed the order. We are taking part in the 50% deal but our portion sizes are unaffected by this. Ian, GM
