It was very busy and the waitresses where rushed off of their feet so the service was not quite as good as it has previously been. I had a slight problem with my main course and this was quickly addressed. This will not deter us and we will return again
Went for my birthday and used our tastecard. Great value for money, friendly staff. Food was great - I would recommend the whole Lobster and my husband enjoyed his steak. The house champagne was lovely too!
I ordered a prawn and avacado salad, 5 prawns, no avacado at all and no dressing on the leaves, so it was just leaves really. It was Christmas so I understand they are very busy. The pudding was not great either although my husband enjoyed his starter and pudding. Very nice staff.
went for breakfast on christmas eve and food as good as ever with friendly courteous staff but a bit let down at the breakfast coming out at completely different times with two of the party of four halfway through their breakfast after of course waiting a whike for the other two to come as indeeed courtesey demands. also could not get the attention of anyone to highlight this. Otherwise as good as always.
This is the second time we have been. Don't get me wrong the food is amazing and the place is stunning but this wasn't the best experience considering the first time that was faultless.
Again your coffee machine is not working a month after our first visit where again it was not working?! so had to choose different drinks.
To be fair it was busy but no way packed to the rafters but the food took a while to come and the toast came a good 5 mins after the breakfast then it wasn't toasted and had to wait to get a waitresses attention to get some butter. I know they are only little things but the first Experiance all this was spot on and the service the young man gave us is the reason we came back as he was great at his job and showed he cared.
But the thing that really annoyed me I'll be honest is after ordering a pot of tea with our breakfast a waitress came round with jugs of coffee and tea and offered one to us clearly giving the impression that this was a kind gesture so we said ok and had two very small cups of tea I even then joked with my partner if they better not charge for that!!! But when I received the bill you actually charged £2 per cup for what was clearly presented to us as a complimentary tea. I have just got back from gleneagles hotel in Scotland one of the best and most expensive hotels in the world and they did not even charge me £2 for a bog standard cup of tea so very annoyed and surprised by that would you also charge for a tap water or to heat a babies bottle up?!
We will be back but thought I would be honest of the service and hidden charges we experienced.
Excellent food and service
Fantastic venue, fantastic food and attentive staff too. Brilliant.
After having a wonderful lunch with fiends, I did not hesitate to book straight away for a pre Christmas Celebration.
Excellent on all counts
Superb dinner. Went with an old girlfriend had the fish platter to share for our starter. I had the chicken friend had the lamb all were excellent... With only 5. Weeks till Christmas the barn was decorated beautifully for the festive season and we had the pianist playing which was an added bonus.. Perfect night out
Had a lovely time and the food was great celebrating my birthday good value for money using the tastecard
Lovely venue combined with good food ,excellent service and live entertainment made it a great evening
Thoroughly recommend Barn
Large party With a total spend of over £400 for my 21st birthday and from the off the service was extremely poor. It was as if they didn't know we were coming. There was no one there to greet and seat us, and the whole thing was so unorganised. You had to go into the main barn to order drinks, which was not made clear upon booking. With a disabled mother and a heavily pregnant guest this was inconvenient. Food-we were limited to one pathetic slice of bread each and when guests asked for more they were looked at with disgust and only 'allowed' what was left in 'our' pot. 3 people maybe got some. Failing to ask if we're ready or seated starters were served. The menu was on the table and was the same I'd pre ordered from. However when we got our main meals, half the guests were missing the sides and toppings. When we asked the waiter he was just confused- not his fault as he was clearly under trained. Manager eventually just brought what was missing on a separate plate after everyone has basically finished eating. No apology just 'who had the chicken' as if it was unreasonable to ask for what you're paying for. Absolutely no attempt was made to rectify the situation. After dessert a few members decided to order coffees which came half full and were under the impression these were a complimentary item as no additional cost was stated on the menu. When they asked for more to make one full cup they were charged for 2 coffees. I ended up have to go and find him myself, as if he was avoiding our party. I spoke him about the above issues and he couldn't have cared less. Gave no eye contact, or apology, or suggestion to rectify. I asked to have the coffees removed from
The bill and he did so gritting his teeth. He half served another customer whilst I was talking to him which is extremely rude. It was the most unwelcome and poor experience I have ever had. I certainly WILL NOT BE RETURING. Thanks for RUINING MY 21st birthday.
We chose The Barn for our son's 18th Birthday, meeting his Aunt and Uncle, who had travelled down from Melton Mowbray for the occasion, on site.
We were greeted pleasantly and offered the choice of whether to sit at the table or the bar. We chose the bar as The Aunt & Uncle hadn't arrived. We weren't advised whether we needed to order at the bar or whether someone would come and take an order.
The lady who greeted us (who was very pleasant) asked if we would like to see the childrens' menu for our son as it was available up the age of 14! We laughed that one off.
As no-one came for a drinks order I went to the bar and ordered drinks. The young lady preparing a gin and tonic overfilled the glass while adding tonic and poured the excess away, thereby wasting some of the gin.
We were offered to the table and we sat.
The staff were all very polite and personable.
Main courses -
Lamb - overcooked
Fish and chops - overcooked
Swordfish - raw in the middle
Lobster - not very much meat for a main meal.
Burger - fine
No-one offered to take away the other meals while the swordfish was taken away and a new piece cooked, so Uncle was eating his main meal after everyone else had finished.
No offer was made for any reduction in price or of drinks in reparation for an uncooked meal.
We weren't asked if we wanted any vegetables and no-one asked if we wanted any more drinks until we had finished the meal. However the water glasses were filled regularly, someone appearing and pouring without asking. Why not just leave a jug on the table.
All in all, lovely surroundings spoiled by disappointing service and food.
We won't rush back.
The Barn is one of our favourite places to eat out.
The barn is one of my favourite places to eat, never had I had a poor meal.. Sadly on this occasion I did.. Order the duck which was a little tough.. The barn always offer sorbet Inbeween starter and main.. Sadly we were forgotten on this occasion when we raised it with the staff it was shrugged off only for us to receive it just before our coffee which was strange to say the least.. Little problems I know but it did put a damper on the evening... This will not stop me returning.
Went for a birthday, the food was good, all around great experience, its the first time my son.had been there,it lived up to expectation.will definitely be going back for afternoon tea.
good service, friendly and professional, good food.
Me and my date loved The Barn, it was a lovely atmosphere and the most perfect location
As usual, everything was spot-on. Food was great. Service was first-class and most courteous. A very pleasant 90 minutes with friends and good food.
All up I was happy and so was my partner. The lamb was not the best quality and fatty with little taste but everything was very good.
Very disappointing as we really wanted to like this place.
Really lovely venue for a family gathering. I took my son for a 21st birthday meal
Lovely food but would ask for a bit more choice if you are a non fish eating vegetarian.
Nice surprise when he was given a plate with ice cream and a candle with dessert.
I have been to the barn a few times now, the service and food have always been excellent.
Pleasant surroundings, excellent service with a good menu, food well cooked and presented, enjoyed live piano especially as many of our favourite Enya songs were played.
Awesome evening, with IrieJ entertaining. That made what was expected to be just dinner into something very special. Great value too.
My husband and I had the most lovely breakfast here this morning. We had the 'Big Barn Breakfast & the Egg's Benedict with Carved Ham, Fresh Coffee & freshly squeezed pure Orange juice. Our food was served very promptly and very hot and tasty. Our coffee was topped up and we were given a flyer about the forthcoming Dinner & Music nights. The service was superb, best we have had in a while...
Great value also and we shall be returning very soon.
We have already recommended to family & friends.
First visit for years. My previous visit the food was not good so pleasantly surprised by your current menu.
No complaints this time. Will return
Most enjoyable lunch - relaxing surroundings - excellent service from Lois our waitress.
We enjoyed our family lunch very much, the waitress was very friendly and attentive and good with the children. It's nice to see gluten free options but unfortunately not much choice for a vegetarian.
Excellent experience. Excellent food, excellent staff.
Very good, food was very nice and very pleased with the service
We had a lovely meal here. The ambiance is lovely, there was a pianist playing whilst we were there. The food was excellent, and the staff as usual are efficient and unobtrusive, which all added to make it a lovely evening.
We always enjoy our trips to The Barn Brasserie and everyone we introduce to the venue is very impressed by its character and ambiance. Beautifully developed and so far not had even the sniff of a bad experience. Highly recommend as suitable for both formal and informal occasions
Lovely surroundings. Friendly and professional staff but service a little slow and had to ask to give order and ask for bill as wait was a bit too long. Food was delicious but the potato gratin was like warm. Didn't want to complain as treating my mum to lunch and didn't want a fuss to spoil our lunch.
Firth time in so many months!! Every time our meals have been exceptional, service is always impeccable & such a lovely setting. In my opinion best restaurant in Colchester!
Overall experience was fab. From the staff to the food.
It's a place for that special occasion.
Lovely meal had by myself and my mother. There was a wedding going on in the Barn so we dined in a private dining room which we were told before arrival and was made very comfortable. Lovely oysters and options for my mother who is vegetarian.
Very attractive setting inside and out. The staff were very helpful ,attentive and friendly. Our group of six all enjoyed our meals . We will visit again.
Lovely place very very good service and very good food and value for money
The food was great the staff were professional, my disappointment was being put in the side room didn't get the call to inform me until we were on way as I don't have mobile at work. The room was cramped ending up with the waiters bottom nearly in my dessert while waiting on the table next to us.
So I would definitely check that I am in the barn and not the side room. Just too many tables in the room which spoilt it for us.
Took a friend for lunch on her 60th birthday, the whole experience was 5* food, staff, and surroundings , well recommended.
