The Black Bull
An excellent steak meal and a very enjoyable evening.
Fantastic food good service just a shame we were the only table occupied
Good food at a reasonable price, served at a steady pace by friendly staff who listened to what we said and asked for. The tables were well spaced so we could see and hear other people but not be pushed past by other diners or staff. A lovely experience
The gentleman behind the bar was particularly pleasant. We surprised my husband by secretly bringing our children to the meal as it was his 60th birthday. The barman was very patient whilst he got over his surprise and we all eventually ordered the drinks. The service and the food were excellent I would definitely recommend.
The food was excellent as was the service. Our group of diners all commented on how much they enjoyed the quality, taste and presentation of the dishes served. The sticky toffee pudding was served as a huge portion so we were all very happy! Well done everyone at the Black Bull.
It was Sunday lunch and they had several large parties in. It meant waiting times between courses was lengthy and staff were rushed and rather abrupt in manner.
We felt that the restaurant should understand better how it feels for other customers waiting their turn until after a large party to be served.
The food was unimaginative and in the case of the beef - small fatty portion came and we had to ask for more - which is not good. There was nothing lighter on the menu e.g plain fish - only stodgy fish pie. Everything on the menu was hefty and heavy.
This was our first visit to The Black Bull, we were really impressed with the modern and beautiful deco. Food was also excellent and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in our party. Sadly as it is a very big and busy place we waited to long and had to ask the staff to take our drinks orders. Later on, after ordering our food we had to wait too long for some bread to be brought to us ( after asking for it). The staff was nice and polite.
The Black Bull was lacking in ambience, the bar was not warm and welcoming with disorganised tables and chairs, nor did their style really enhance the style of the bar.
The food was ok, but not particularly special or tasty, presentation was good. The duck in the little pot was so cold it was tasteless. The venison was two x 1 inch squares of meat plus a pot of nondescript warm meat.
Desserts were disappointing, very hard and very cold fig ice cream with too much cool sloppy meringue.
There were other customers but the whole place was lacking, the music was very low, the staff were fine but had nothing to offer than the basics. A shame since I had been before and enjoyed it hence the second visit. At approx £33 pp this was not particularly good value.
Very nice place, food was excellent. Slightly disappointed the early dining menu advertised on the website was not available (apparently they stop doing the early doors menu sometime back but it still showing on their website). That aside we both plumped for the Sunday roast which was excellent.
Be warned that although the restaurant is only a mile or two from Scotch Corner, satnav will send you on a wild goose chase if you’re not careful.
Four of us had Sunday lunch and almost everything was excellent. The only slight let down was my roast pork which was very thinly cut and rather dry. However the vegetables and Yorkshires were very good and we all thoroughly enjoyed our deserts.
Food was beautifully cooked, we had Sunday roast. I would have liked more veggies but I didn't ask but if I had I'm sure the staff would have obliged. We were with my mum in law who has an allergy to onions and the staff were fantastic checking ingredients and bringing her a special pot of veg that had not been cooked with onion. We brought our own gravy which chef used on her dinner. Dessert was a generous portion and we felt we had value for money. We would definitely return.
The bar and restaurant areas were very appealing, and we couldn't fault the service. However I was a little disappointed at the choice on the menu. I chose the sirloin steak, which was one of the most expensive meals listed. I am not a fussy eater, but I had to send the steak back as almost every mouthful was grissle. I was given another freshly cooked steak, which was an improvement, but still one of the worst steaks I have eaten in a restaurant. The staff were very apologetic, but that didn't make up for the fact that my husband had to eat alone while I waited for my replacement. I was offered a drink on the house when we went to pay the bill, but I didn't think the cost of over £80 for dinner for 2 of us was really justified. We have decided, despite the lovely ambience we will not go back.
Following the significance refurbishment a few years back the quality of food has remained superb, however the level of service didn’t reflect the cost of dining. I’m pleased to say that following a period of not dining there the service has improved and we will hope be returning soon.
Food was spoilt by over salty gravy. Don't add any salt! Service was slow but courteous and friendly.
Been recommended to go loads of time, and have never got round to do it finally went on Sunday and it was amazing shouldn’t have left it so long, definitely won’t leave it as long to come back! Surroundings, service and food all amazing!
Great Sunday dinner - fabulous food and lovely service.
Our evening meal at the Black Bull was delicious. The food was outstanding, fish cooked to perfection as were the steaks and the staff very helpful, pleasant and willing to please. However there was a private function in a back room which must have taken alot of the staff as the restaurant staff were in short supply which led to a slightly longer wait to get drinks, order food etc. It did not spoil our evening and we all felt that the few staff who were working did deserve a tip. Would recommend this restaurnant and I will return.
Beautiful restaurant and welcoming bar area. We went on Valentines Day, but went late afternoon/early evening as we wanted to miss the Valentines fuss. We were only offered the Valentines menu to start, and had to request the ‘ordinary’ menu. Our food was really good, fish pie and burger, and the Sauvignon Blanc was deliciously chilled. Excellent service also. Lovely place
I had been given some vouchers as a leaving present. I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The food was outstanding. The service was excellent. They were very busy and still went that extra mile. I certainly would go again.
Overall we had a great meal and the staff were really friendly and polite. We did have one issue with the portion size of the venison dish my dad ordered. It was tiny, there was little meat and little else on the plate which in comparrason to the 3 other dishes on the table looked like a starter. We all shared food from our dinners to him so he wasn’t hungry. He did mention it to the waitress and I would have expected possibly a complimentary drink or pudding since he was left unsatisfied but nothing was offered which seemed a shame. It’s a lovely place and the food was very nice but just a bit disappointing since it was over £20 for the dish.
A very pleasant experience nice young people and good food
Had a lovely lunch. Cheese soufflé was delicious, the gourmet fish pie a triumph, and the chocolate indulgence puds were to die for. Thank you to the brilliant staff for their friendly and attentive service. The birthday surprise of chocolates and candles was really kind and much appreciated. It made our visit extra special - well worth the 2 hour journey on a wintry day. Good food, good company, log fires and a great ambience. Thank you!
We enjoyed our steak night meal very much and received very good service.Unfortunately we had to leave earlier than usual due to very cold air blowing around us and our coffee which just could not happen.
Hi, unfortunately we received the wrong order for one of the mains, and the children asked for skinny fries and got fat. However, pancake was delicious and staff were quite slow but very nice when they arrived.
we had a very pleasant meal, the waiting staff were helpful and the service was as we wanted it - not rushed, allowing time to savour the food and to chat between courses. We had the Chateaubriand which was cooked rare for me and medium rare for my wife - we appreciated the option to have the meat cooked to each of our liking.
A pleasent Sunday lunch, good food reasonably priced in nice surroundings.
Our table was booked for 2000 we were on time and seated, we had 6 people in-our party (one birthday) we had starters then waited until gone 2130 for our main. we then ordered deserts at around 2150 and had to ask where these were at 2230 (they then arrived promptly) We asked for a sparkler / candle in our birthday persons desert this didn’t happen. Drinks were very spars and we had to keep catching the waitress when ever we could. Very disappointed for the price paid !!!
As always good value with excellent food and wine . Pleasant staff with good service .
Not been before but will return. A lovely venue serving delicious food. Staff are friendly. Lots of parking.
Wonderful stuff and consistently excellent : see Trip Adviser!
Always had excellent food and service at the Black Bull. We are regular customers and recommend it to friends and family. We look forward to our next visit
Excellent food , attentive staff, great ambiance and child friendly.
service was extremely slow. It took nearly 3 hours for two courses to come.
Food was ok but not worth the price. Overall disappointing.
Comfortable service (Hate staff saying 'enjoy!!' and calling us 'guys' from which you will guess that I am old!) Food good, and good choices, though the fish pie could have been hotter.
Second recent visit and will come again, but the inability to provide hot coffee remains an issue!!!
My partner, sister and myself came to the Black Bull for dinner on Christmas Eve and had delicious food served by very efficient and curtious waiter and waitress. It was a lovely start to our Christmas and we hope to visit again very soon. Thank you all. Hope you have a very happy new year
Excellent service, and were great accommodating for our new born baby. Exceptional food and delectable wine list.
Very friendly and attentive staff. The food was beautiful and the ambience serene as it was quite when we went.
What a hidden gem have driven past on the motorway a 100 times and missed it
Excellent food fantastic service
It worth breaking your journey five minutes off the motorway for fab fine dinning
One arriving was met by welcoming staff restaurant very cosy food was excellent and was never rushed I would say this restaurant was excellent and outstanding and would recommended any one to go
Have always enjoyed the food at the Black Bull, but would like more starter choices.
