The Black Bull
Sunday: 12pm - 3pm; 5pm - 8:30pm
This was our first visit to the Black Bull. It was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday evening but still had a nice atmosphere. The service and the food could not be faulted. My husband has dietary requirements and this was not a problem for the staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
Sunday dinner was lovely but after receiving the dessert menu no one returned to take our order after 30 minutes of waiting we asked for the bill and left
Birthday celebration, service not good and it wasn't busy. Food not good at all, fish pie came with no fish, so £17.00 for a dish full of mashed potatoe, burgers were raw in the middle, asked for rare steaks but were cocked medium. Basically got very simple food wrong.
Excellent service and food. Good ambience lovely wine and ber
Hate to give 2 star's, but we were VERY disappointed on this visit. We arrived on time and we went into the Bar for a cocktail. We felt rushed and pressure to order and were asked by 2 people to go to the table. We ordered in the Bar then went to the table. No sooner had we received our bread the Main course arrived. The steaks had been fired before we even sat down. !!. We were only approached one time to see if all was OK, I had to pour my own wine and after eating nobody asked if we wanted anything else. I had put in my reservation it was my partner's Birthday, but there was no mention of it. Finally we had to go to the reseption to ask for our Bill. We explained how we had felt rushed but then realized we had been charged Full price for a Half price bottle of Prosecco ??. Far far below your usual standard.
Nice food but Sunday lunch portion size for me was too big.
Been here on several occasions and we haven't been disappointed. The food is excellent and the service very good. Staff are friendly and helpful.
We have eaten here a number of time and we have noticed of late that the service seems to have slowed down considerably - don't know if they are short of staff or have inexperienced staff but it needs to pick up a bit. The menu is also starting to look a bit dated - and no Sunday lunch option on a Sunday - shame. Otherwise nice outside seating area and the restaurants ambience is very nice.
An enjoyable lunch occasion with friendly staff which contributed to the day.
We were greeted by a list of what was NOT available which amounted to approx 50% of the menu. We were a party of eight, there was one other table of 2 occupied.... staff were not exactly overworked. The bar service was unbelievably slow, 3 reminders before we got our wine, the food when it eventually arrived was neither good quality or plentiful... my smoked duck would not have covered a teaspoon, and that is not an exaggeration, though the accompanying tasteless noodles attempted to disguise the meagre meat portion. One of our party selected the king scallops ... there were 3 about the size of a chocolate button....I ordered a seafood pancake as a main course, having read its description on the menu carefully... it came literally smothered in cheese... I am allergic to cheese! The menu failed to mention this though it included cheese on various other dishes. Consequently my friends had finished their meals before my reorder was served. Sadly, no one raved about their main course either, very paltry servings across the board. In all we were there for almost 3 hours for lunch.... sorry this is just not acceptable.
We chose this venue because we have visited all the Provenance Inns in the area, and have always been very happy with the food and service..... this was one is way below the standards expected, and I can guarantee none of our party of 8 will return to The Black Bull! Indeed we are all feeling very ‘anti’ Provenance Inn if they can let this standard carry their name and reputation
I/we had a great evening thank you, the black bull is very accessible
Although the food was as good as we have come to expect after many previous visits, the evening was spoiled by poor service. The young waiting staff were very pleasant but lacked someone in charge of them.
We were not offered a wine menu when ordering our food and had to ask for one. The wine did not turn up until well after our starters to be told that it had taken some finding!
The waitress then asked if we would like to see the desert menu when she cleared away our starters.
After our main course, a waitress took our order for deserts but did not register our orders as she became preoccupied with some other diners who were complaining about their meal. She eventually realised her mistake and after a 30 minute wait, our deserts eventually arrived.
We complained to the lady in charge who offered to credit “one” of the deserts from our bill. However, she agreed to waive both deserts after our protest.
Throughout our meal, attention appeared to be concentrated on the table of diners who had complained leaving us feeling unimportant.
Upon paying our bill, she did not offer any apologies nor acknowledge us as we left.
All in all, not the experience we have come to expect from the Black Bull and it has put us off returning in the short term.
Best food and best service 😀great surroundings. Lovely cocktails
Best Sunday meal good value for money the restaurant has a nice feel to it very welcoming.
My starter of heritage tomato and goats cheese salad was one small tomato and a dollop of mayonnaise. £5.50. My wife had no paramsan biscuit with her risotto. Food very poor
Very disappointed lamb was over cooked after been told it will be pink.was told I would get crushed potatoes with meal never arrived.
My husband got his pint of coke spilt all over him. Waitress was new and upset she had done this. Restaurant manager was not helpful at all. We had to suggest we move tables as the area was drenched. There was very little in the way of an apology. This was terrible service which we have not come across before in any restaraunt. It did spoil the evening and was very uncomfortable for my husband as he had to sit with a wet shirt, jeans, underwear and shoes. Really disappointed as this is a place we meet up with friends from Ripon every month or so. Will have to find a new restaraunt now as we will think twice about returning.
Went for Father's day lunch. Is one of favourite restaurants for Sunday lunch so high expectations. Wasn't up to usual standards but not a bad meal, just missed the usual excellent food and service. Won't put us off returning again.
Ate at the restaurant on the 16/06/18. Food reasonably good, service poor, uninterested waiting on staff. Ordered coffee, noticed very obvious low standard of cleanliness to inside of milk/cream jug. Copious amounts of thick black residue observed , which had obviously accumulated for some time. Draw attention to this matter to the waitress on two occasions, who commented on each occasions that this was “pretty disgusting” but did little else. No attempt made to bring our concern to the manager. We settled the cheque and left without drinking our coffee. Since contacted the restaurant and received a “we will look in to it” response. Don’t expect to hear anything further. We would not choose to eat here again. This was not a piece of crockery not washed thoroughly on one occasion, this had the appearance of dark, thick mould which had obviously stood for some time. To be fair, the design of the crockery chosen was ill thought through. This is the first review I have ever left on any site, usually I simoly choose never to visit again or not to recommend to friends. However, on this occasion, I was appalled at the disregard for hygiene and the lack of management of the situation by the waitress when I quietly and politely brought this to her attention. Perhaps the restaurant would have preferred me to announce this to all before making comment and offering an apology? Wish I had taken my phone with me to allow me to take a photograph but choose not to whilst dining out. As already stated, would not consider visiting again.
Lovely meal at the Black Bull. Had the early evening menu which had good choice. Portions were good and there were real chips. Nice beer. Beautiful setting and excellently presented decor.
My friend and I always choose The Black Bull for our twice yearly get together. The staff are very welcoming and the choice of food really good and delicious. We had a lovely glass of Sauvignon Blanc and complimentary chocolates with our coffee. We will be back again soon.
My wife and I decided to pop out for dinner on spur of the moment at the black bull. The service and welcome was excellent, Pre dinner drinks were served as soon as we arrived, and the food was exceptional! Would highly recommend as a great place to eat and not expensive for quality of food.
Very impressed with the Black Bull the staff were friendly and efficient. No long waits between courses all meals brought out together and the food was excellent. Would definitely recommend.
A very pleasant evening with helpful, if young, staff. As a family we enjoyed the ambience and food.
Starters and main courses were both cold and had to be sent back. Service was a bit hit and miss, more miss than hit.
Great choice of food. Very tasty. Friendly atmosphere.
I have been Dining at The Black Bull for 33 years and the current Proprietors are doing a sterling job in upholding the high reputation of this fine restaurant. Our recent visit was of fine food in a relaxed ambient atmosphere.
Fantastic food. Great choice and expertly cooked. Wellcoming and friendly staff and lovely surroundings. We had a wonderful night!
Service left a lot to be desired. At times not one employee to be seen, tables not cleared quickly enough, no one to take further orders or answere queries. Food was excellent but we would have liked all the meals to be served at the same time and not have people to have to wait till we could all begin eating.
We last visited in the days of the railway coach. We much preferred the atmosphere in those days. There's very little atmosphere nowadays as the restaurant design is more metropolis than country orientated. You could be anywhere. Good beer and beer prices but it would be better if the pint glasses were properly filled
Tasty meal and delicious wine with lovely view of outside space.
Really lovely and peaceful
Setting. Food was divine and so well coooked and tasteful. Friendly service from all of the staff. Clean environment and facilities and wouldn’t hesitate going back
my meal was fine but my dining companions were not really impressed, a lot of items on the menu had run out and one of my friends asked if they had steak pie available ,the waitress said that she could not have it as it was on the early menu which finished at 6.45 ,although the diner on the next table had it at 8pm.my friend ordered soup which came with no bread ,when she asked for bread & butter the waiter came with one slice of bread and said they had run out of butter.bit of a joke really, as we don't live near i probably won't go back i think its a bit of a hit or a miss kind of place
Lovely meal for a belated birthday celebration, the food was perfect and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The set price menu is great value and the child’s meal was great value too. Will definitely be back!
Lovely family get together. I’m Coeliac, and although not a huge choice they were knowledgable.
Delightful venue, well decorated. Al fresco dining available. Attentive but not over bearing staff. For those with dietary issues very helpful, sensible to call in advance to check for particular issues. Disabled access from the car park not obvious. The menu is varied and there are special menus, lunch time and special events.
Always excellent food in bright conservatory style dining room. Food locally sourced and always a good choice on the menu. Home made lemon curd macaroons with the coffee were heavenly
This was a sunday lunch and the food was OK, the beef exceptional. But there was a long period between the serving of the meat plates and the vegetables during which time the meat, gravy and yorkshire pudding cooled down. Revived a little with extra gravy.
Poor ambience and despite what looked like a sufficient number of staff the service was poor.
Went for our 40th anniversary as our daughter had got us some vouchers as a present. First time we had been and will certainly be going back. Good food good prompt service and very friendly staff.
We hadn't bee to the Black Bull for 20 years so weren't sure what to expect. We were warmly welcomed and served promply . The food was top notch as was the service. I am particularly looking forward to returning for one of the world cusine nights (eg Greek)
