The Black Bull
Sunday: 12pm - 3pm; 5pm - 8:30pm
We enjoyed a birthday meal with 2 adults and our 2 kids, (12 and 14), food was delicious, our youngest had the confit duck (wasn’t expecting that choice) and he loved it, the rest of us planned main and pud instead of a starter, we all had different mains, beef, pork and turkey, all delicious. 3 puddings and a cheese board finished the meal off and again very very nice. Lovely surrounding and good service, nothing at all to fault, thank you Black Bull 👍
been before the black bull is best ever ,food great ,service is great you just cannot have a better time than at the black bull
Delicious and imaginative cooking supported by great service - Jill, Ashleigh and Adam looked after us and our cocker spaniel beautifully. We've eaten here again since our Sunday lunch and an early mid week dinner at a table close to the fire in the bar was equally excellent : every dish prepared and presented with real flair.
An excellent meal, great service and a lovely atmosphere. Many thanks
We came for Sunday lunch with my parents. The food was good although I thought the vegetables with the Sunday lunch were average and very small portions between 4 of us. What let you down was the speed of service. We were served our two main meals and 4 hot roasts and then waited so long for the accompanying vegetables that I had to get up from the table, find a waitress and ask where the vegetables were. We also had to order hot gravy as by then our meat, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were cold... We chose to have a pudding but literally had to find a waitress to make our order. One of our waitresses was very polite, responded to everything we asked for and apologised for the errors - I just think you didn’t have enough waitressing staff on to serve the restaurant.
Lovely restaurant- fab Sunday lunch- friendly helpful staff- would def visit again
Nice cosy setting very goog service good quality meals
Disappointed- took family for a get together but having not visited for a year or two were very disappointed and wished we’d gone elsewhere. Food was average - and extremely salty portions were poor
Our first experience at the Wednesday night steak night and have to say that on the whole the evening was a great success.
Group of 5. One starter did not come out but soon sorted. Beef dinner was awful meat small and half of it was fat. 4 meals came out and the manager said im sorry the 5th meal has not been started yet. It csme out 15 min later only to find the fish pie was raw fish in the middle. Ended up just having soup to get something to eat.
What was a special occasion turned out a disaster.
I could not recomend this place and can only assume its a has been place.
The young guy howwver who served us was very plesent and polite.
Love going to the Black Bull; only criticism that is out of 5 visits they have NEVER served everyone in the party the correct type of chips ordered (ie skinny fries or thick chips), there is always at least one wrong!
Other than that, all good :-)
Bar area is good with a decent choice of everything. Our party mostly opted for the steak and wine offer. My meal was good. Service at checkout was a bit sluggish, having asked for the bill three times.
Would still venture back.
Very good early door menu and also the specials - particularly the Wednesday evening steak and wine offers.
Found at 11:00 the night before. Needed for 12 people to eat. Restaurant staff were attentive and friendly.
Good food and lovely environment. Glad we found it.
Despite being very quiet on a Friday night, several items on the menu were not available. Service was very slow.
Great food and service. The receptionist, barman and waiting staff were all friendly and professional. It was our first visit as we have just moved to North Yorkshire. It will not be the last.
Friendly staff and excellent food. I have to admit they had a bad evening when I visited on Saturday, service wise. Very busy and the meal took longer than expected, however they apologised and reduced the bill by a considerable amount. Everyone has a bad day and I would definetly visit again. Great place so try it out for yourself.
We come to the Black Bull regular but on this occasion we were very disappointed arriving early doors only us in I would of expected us all to have our meal together not so my husbands steak had been dropped on the floor so they gave me mine while he had to wait for another steak to be cooked I was half way through when his came ,we also had the grandchildren with us they got their meal before me and one was finished her meal before mine arrived as for the portions for the children it was of the big kids menu I am only glad we didn't get small kids, I don't think 1 sausage with mash was sufficient for any 8 year old so all in all we wont be rushing back.
been many times in both original venue and the new. Food is good, but never busy and on our last visit service was a little slow even though virtually empty
This was our 2nd visit to the Black Bull , 1st time was an absolutely superb experience. Was a little apprehensive that the 2nd visit would not live up to the 1st, but that was not a worry it was every bit as good as the last time if not a little better! , fantastic fresh ingredients beautifully cooked and presented , would totally recommend visiting well worth it
Excellent restaurant with great atmosphere and friendly service
Fantastic food, really nice atmosphere, great friendly service and hearty portions - 2nd time here and will definitely be back for a 3rd
Food is very good and menu shows where it is sourced which we liked. Service was excellent, servers were friendly. We found it a very relaxing experience with no sense of being rushed to order or finish the meal quickly.
The ambience was somewhat lacking as the eating area is very large and open without atmosphere or architectural individuality.
Excellent food and good service. Staff very friendly
This was our first visit to the Black Bull. It was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday evening but still had a nice atmosphere. The service and the food could not be faulted. My husband has dietary requirements and this was not a problem for the staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
Sunday dinner was lovely but after receiving the dessert menu no one returned to take our order after 30 minutes of waiting we asked for the bill and left
Birthday celebration, service not good and it wasn't busy. Food not good at all, fish pie came with no fish, so £17.00 for a dish full of mashed potatoe, burgers were raw in the middle, asked for rare steaks but were cocked medium. Basically got very simple food wrong.
Excellent service and food. Good ambience lovely wine and ber
Hate to give 2 star's, but we were VERY disappointed on this visit. We arrived on time and we went into the Bar for a cocktail. We felt rushed and pressure to order and were asked by 2 people to go to the table. We ordered in the Bar then went to the table. No sooner had we received our bread the Main course arrived. The steaks had been fired before we even sat down. !!. We were only approached one time to see if all was OK, I had to pour my own wine and after eating nobody asked if we wanted anything else. I had put in my reservation it was my partner's Birthday, but there was no mention of it. Finally we had to go to the reseption to ask for our Bill. We explained how we had felt rushed but then realized we had been charged Full price for a Half price bottle of Prosecco ??. Far far below your usual standard.
Nice food but Sunday lunch portion size for me was too big.
Been here on several occasions and we haven't been disappointed. The food is excellent and the service very good. Staff are friendly and helpful.
We have eaten here a number of time and we have noticed of late that the service seems to have slowed down considerably - don't know if they are short of staff or have inexperienced staff but it needs to pick up a bit. The menu is also starting to look a bit dated - and no Sunday lunch option on a Sunday - shame. Otherwise nice outside seating area and the restaurants ambience is very nice.
An enjoyable lunch occasion with friendly staff which contributed to the day.
We were greeted by a list of what was NOT available which amounted to approx 50% of the menu. We were a party of eight, there was one other table of 2 occupied.... staff were not exactly overworked. The bar service was unbelievably slow, 3 reminders before we got our wine, the food when it eventually arrived was neither good quality or plentiful... my smoked duck would not have covered a teaspoon, and that is not an exaggeration, though the accompanying tasteless noodles attempted to disguise the meagre meat portion. One of our party selected the king scallops ... there were 3 about the size of a chocolate button....I ordered a seafood pancake as a main course, having read its description on the menu carefully... it came literally smothered in cheese... I am allergic to cheese! The menu failed to mention this though it included cheese on various other dishes. Consequently my friends had finished their meals before my reorder was served. Sadly, no one raved about their main course either, very paltry servings across the board. In all we were there for almost 3 hours for lunch.... sorry this is just not acceptable.
We chose this venue because we have visited all the Provenance Inns in the area, and have always been very happy with the food and service..... this was one is way below the standards expected, and I can guarantee none of our party of 8 will return to The Black Bull! Indeed we are all feeling very ‘anti’ Provenance Inn if they can let this standard carry their name and reputation
I/we had a great evening thank you, the black bull is very accessible
Although the food was as good as we have come to expect after many previous visits, the evening was spoiled by poor service. The young waiting staff were very pleasant but lacked someone in charge of them.
We were not offered a wine menu when ordering our food and had to ask for one. The wine did not turn up until well after our starters to be told that it had taken some finding!
The waitress then asked if we would like to see the desert menu when she cleared away our starters.
After our main course, a waitress took our order for deserts but did not register our orders as she became preoccupied with some other diners who were complaining about their meal. She eventually realised her mistake and after a 30 minute wait, our deserts eventually arrived.
We complained to the lady in charge who offered to credit “one” of the deserts from our bill. However, she agreed to waive both deserts after our protest.
Throughout our meal, attention appeared to be concentrated on the table of diners who had complained leaving us feeling unimportant.
Upon paying our bill, she did not offer any apologies nor acknowledge us as we left.
All in all, not the experience we have come to expect from the Black Bull and it has put us off returning in the short term.
Best food and best service 😀great surroundings. Lovely cocktails
Best Sunday meal good value for money the restaurant has a nice feel to it very welcoming.
My starter of heritage tomato and goats cheese salad was one small tomato and a dollop of mayonnaise. £5.50. My wife had no paramsan biscuit with her risotto. Food very poor
Very disappointed lamb was over cooked after been told it will be pink.was told I would get crushed potatoes with meal never arrived.
