About

Appleby Magna in Leicestershire, as well as being listed in the Domesday book, is home to a lovingly restored 16th century grade II listed building – The Black Horse Restaurant and Bar. It’s a beloved village pub and The Black Horse also offers a stellar dining experience, with loyal customers coming back again and again for mouth-watering classic European cuisine. The lovingly restored Tudor exterior belies a contemporary and cosy interior – perfect for a relaxing meal on a cold day. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a warm day, there’s also the option to go al fresco. Using much locally sourced and organic produce, the menus change with the seasons, though customers really rate the chicken liver parfait with white truffle oil and ciabatta, and the pub classic – 21 day matured sirloin steak with triple-cooked chips. Desserts, too, are worth saving room for, as are the fantastic real ales.

Booked online through OpenTable, but when we arrived we were told there was no food due to the venue being under new ownership. No compensation offered for our inconvenience.

Phone the restaurant directly to book. We used the online booking service, received a confirmation and a reminder only to arrive to find they hadn't got our booking and were full up.

My husband and I had lunch here as we were on our way from Nottingham to Birmingham to attend a concert and wanted to break the journey in a pleasant way. We had a delightful lunch - everything was well-cooked, well presented and delicious. This is a lovely country pub/restaurant and we were impressed by the very friendly welcome and service throughout the meal. Attentive but not over the top and we were very pleased to have found the Black Horse via the internet and would certainly recommend to others.

I challenge someone to find a better pub lunch, for the same outstanding value, superb service and absolutely deliciously scrumptious food. I was shocked at how well presented, filling and how tasty the meal was. And yet so very affordable. I've not had a better pub lunch in the UK. I'll be back!

We visit this restaurant when we are house and dog sitting for our son. We have enjoyed every Sunday lunch we have eaten here. The menu is varied and there is plenty of choice. we find that it make s a change from the usual Sunday Lunches and carveries on offer at many pub restaurants. The staff are friendly without being intrusive and the food is always well presented as well as being well cooked. if we lived closer we would no doubt be frequent visitors on other days of the week

Had a lovely evening out here celebrating my friends birthday. The venue was lovely - old and modern at the same time. It was also small so made the whole experience more intimate. The food was excellent - they obviously have a very good chef. I would love to go back for another special occasion.

We came across The Black Horse whilst searching the net for another restaurant we had been told about. As we love eating out we decided to try and are so glad we did.
The service from the time we entered until we left was welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food was very good and the presentation of the food was lovely, with a lovely warm atmosphere to add to a great evening out. Will definitely be booking again soon and will be taking friends and family.

Our third visit for Sunday Lunch - once again it didn't disappoint and once again no-one left a shred on the plate! If you want restaurant-quality food but at sensible prices then the Black Horse consistently provides both. Nice relaxed atmosphere, service is good and all the staff are very friendly. Drinks are also reasonably priced too. Good choice of dishes on the Sunday Lunch menu which changes regularly, portion sizes are just right and excellent value for money. One to be recommended.

Although we live a fifteen minute drive away we were unaware of this restaurant. I booked fairly late on a Saturday for a table at 8:00pm and was pleased to receive an almost instant reply that the booking had gone through. We enjoyed a very good meal selected from a menu that was short but offered interesting selections. We will be back!

We arrived ten minuates before our table was booked for and they were still putting the finishing touches to the tables. The staff seemed a little supprised that we arrived to be seated at the booked time. The table we were sat at was close to a hatch type opening that meant you could hear all the goings on in the bar and this was a distraction throughout our meal, along with being seat very close to the entrance of the restaurant with this and the bar noise the evening could have been better.

We had a wonderful time at The Black Horse! Great service, excellent food and a lovely atmosphere. The old fashioned pub is tastefully decorated with a modern twist that compliments the venue (not a horse brass in sight). I would recommend it to couples for a romantic dining experience.

A very cosy dining experience! All staff tried their very best to impress their customers. The owners had clearly worked hard in improving the decor of the building. There appeared to be a clear commitment to improve the customer experience even further.
Some suggestions, however. Please don't undertake staff training in full view of all of your customers making them feel that you have more important things to attend to then them! Our view was that it simply seemed to lack a calm and reassuring "Maitre de" to keep the ship running smoothly! The turquoise colour scheme didn't do much for us, but that's personal choice. We sincerely hope the local community responds accordingly to help keep this valuable community resource afloat.

We meet with our lovely friends once a quarter and try to meet about half way. The Black Horse is perfectly situated and we have returned on a number of occassions to enjoy their excellent food at sensible prices. The beer is always good too! An excellent and friendly pub and restaurant. Cheers!

We decided to have Sunday lunch at the Black Horse after seeing good reviews and a sample menu online. We were not disappointed. The welcome was pleasant, the drinks served quickly and we were shown to our table in a small well decorated restaurant area. The portions were ample and well presented. The food was cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble for the waitress who was extremely busy, serving in the bar as well as at the tables. All in all this was a most pleasant experience and if we lived nearer this would soon become a favourite place to eat and we would no doubt sample the mid week lunch and evening menus.

I went to the Black Horse with my partner for my birthday and were so impressed with the food and service. They are currently having some exterior work done which is apparently due to be completed soon but dont let it put you off. You wouldnt even know once in side.
The food is exceptional and the price is very reasonable, I had the belly pork dish and an assiette for dessert, one good way to get four dessert for your pudding and not feel too guilty!
I will be re-booking very soon.

Black Horse Appleby Magna. Limited menu and combinations not well thought out. The steak ordered was well overdone and more than 8 chips and some more garnish would not go amiss cost extra for a full portion of chips..After reading reviews maybe having an off night but will not be returning.

Despite extensive exterior improvements going on to the building, business went on as normal at the Black Horse. Normal being, excellent food, excellent service and excellent atmosphere. it is one of my favourite places, as it can always relied upon to deliver a really good evening. The guests that we took with us agreed that the food is exceptional, cooked and presented with pride. Love it!

Really excellent pork belly & beef blade. Small issues - cheese board not as high quality as the other dishes; limited selection wine by glass & plates absolutely raging hot. But didn't detract from very good meal - cooking stands up to most top restaurants in the Midlands. Worth visiting

The Black Horse, Appleby Magna continues to delight. The restaurant in in a series of cosy but light rooms, not too crowded, and the service is friendly and efficient. Food excellent - tomato & basil soup served hot in a glass was delicious; wild mushroom risotto had a superb texture, sweetened by aged balsamic, yum! All beautifully presented. Wines very reasonably priced and a large bottle of sparkling water only £1.95! 2 courses for 2 with water and a £17 bottle of good wine £54.

Our 3rd or 4th visit - always a reliably enjoyable experience in this cosy pub. In group of 4, we found starter plus mains sufficient, giving a bill including wine/service of just £25 a head. Food is generally v. good, albeit occasional flaws (a tomato puff pastry tartlet was OK, but drowning the rocket on top of it with oil made it too greasy) - rack of lamb was nicely cooked and extremely tender, vegetables served separately are crisp and fresh. Bread delicious and service always friendly.

THe Black Horse, DE12 7AH. Starters were delicious. Mains less good. Drinks variable. Service friendly, but could do with better organising. Cosy environment. The food overall was good, but could do better, especially as the starters set a high benchmark. Did not recieve our Toptable discount, despite stating that we had booked through TT.
