The Black Horse
Food is our passion and we will never compromise on quality. We are proud of our seasonally changing menus, simple, yet exciting using the finest ingredients and locally sourced produce. Certain dishes have become specialities such as our sticky ribs and homemade 8oz burgers. Our beef has been aged for a minimum of 35 days and the roast beef served on Sundays is unrivalled. Crispy beer battered fish and specials such as sea bass, turbot and whole lobster, is caught in the morning and delivered fresh to us on the same day.
Nice meal and very pleasant staff - will certainly eat here again.
Been here twice in the last fortnight and both times no gluten Free bread to have with soup or prawn cocktail, admittedly not the end of the world to go without but nonetheless pretty poor showing especially twice !! They used to have the bread in previous visits but obviously can’t be bothered now as I don’t think this was a coincidence, price of beer and wines could be a bit more friendly too
Lovely place - dog and baby friendly. Great variety on the menu and cost atmosphere.
Nice country pub good wholesome food waitress fine and honest only drawback run out of Gluten Free bread and slightly overpriced
Booked a table for early Sunday lunch. Was there with my husband, son and grandson (4yrs old)
Ordered roast pork x 2, a salad and scampi and chips. Sadly although the food was quite nice, the plates for the roast were luke warm so the food cooled very quickly. As we were in a bit of a rush I did not complain at the time. The young staff, although pleasant were not organised and we were asked 3 times whether our food was alright and then took ages to bring the 1 dessert we ordered.
I did feel the meals were overpriced.
Really nice, high quality pub food.
Our evening was spoilt by steaks being incorrectly cooked. They were replaced (this took 25 minutes) and after some discussion, knocked off of the bill. Starters and other main courses were OK. Overall not a very satisfactory experience.
The restaurant wasn't busy when we arrived. They took our drinks order straight away, followed by our food order.
45 minutes later and we still didn't have our food. As it was quiet, we were a bit confused. Finally asked a waitress when she appeared. After a bit of fuss and checking the till, we were apologised to and told we'd receive 10% off the bill, but not given any explanation as to why! ( I'm guessing they took the order and forgot to put it through to the kitchen)
Food was nice when it arrived but they gave us both sirloin instead of ribeye, but by that time were too hungry to complain anymore.
The final stinger was the bill!!! £25.00 for two white wine spritzers..... Thought they'd accidentally charged us for a bottle... But apparently, no, this was correct!! Shocking!
Trouble is Black Horse, there are a number of pubs and restaurants that offer equally nice Sunday Roasts for less and some of them are of a higher quality. So not a place I'd choose to go back to.
You're charging high end prices for mediocre food, average surroundings and below par service.
Good quality food served by highly professional staff. Further menu development is required, including more imaginative salad combinations, if the restaurant is to maintain its position.
A pleasant evening with good food and service. All at a reasonable price.
Never been disappointed when visiting the black horse. Was lovely
This was a busy night and so the service levels dipped below those we normally receive
As always Angela looked after us supurbly.
Fish and chips always great.
Wine overpriced could do with a few more bottles at more reasonable price.
Let down by inexperienced staff. Having explained I had an onion allergy I still got salad with my starter with onions in it. Food was tasty and came quickly. Caesar salad with chicken breast was delicious. Ice cream was extra good. Fab selection of gins too.
A disappointing meal. 10 mains ordered but only 9 delivered. 10th had to be reordered. Starters and drinks were fine and dishes plentiful but quality was lacking. Pulled pork tastes only of sauce, fish rather oily etc. Deserts and coffee were fine. Sadly the service was very disorganised.
Very restricted menu choice, we were advised there was an issue in the kitchen.
No one contacted us in advance, this was a special occasion dinner that did not
live up to expectations.
The caesar salad, one of the dishes ordered was a ‘starter’ size dish & very poor
value for money.
We have in the past had excellent meals at the Black Horse but on this occasion it was a total disappointment!
A friend recommended this restaurant and having a Vegan menu was a plus.
The food was nice and the staff tried but we were served the not vegan option of the salad even though we ordered from the Vegan menu. The platter came without bread and we were told bread was separate, even though tin the menu it was included.
When we got the meal they charged us 17 + for the platter, the men said 7 so when we queried they said it was an error as it was a new menu but they insisted on charging us the full price which we refused.
I was really looking forward to this lunch but the experience was disappointing and don't think I'll come back.
Visited for lunch. Varied menu & quick service. Could do with a few more salad options for summer. Triple cooked chips - best ever!
Very good food and attentive service. Decent value with large portions and plenty of vegetables.
We arrived and were accommodated immediately, given a nice table outside as were told it was no problem us having an extra party member.
The waiter was quick to order our drinks and food and the drinks and starters arrived promptly. However,we then waited an hour for our mains and I had to actually go to the bar to order another round of drinks as the second drinks order that the waiter had taken an hour ago was nowhere to be seen.Having thought that our waiter had vanished from the face of the earth,I asked a barman about our food order. He was lovely and apologized profusely for the delay. He also brought our drinks promptly and then our food a few minutes later.Had it not been for him this would have been a poor review. The food is ok .
Really good food, we had the mussels, both traditional and Thai (really big and succulent) plus the lamb tagine and steak and kidney pie. Both mains were really good, with lots of meat and flavour.
Service from 3 staff and all were very friendly and helpful. Well done
Great quality food and generally a good atmosphere, however we did have a very large party (20 People) next to us which rather spoilt the atmosphere on this occasion. They also ran out of many varieties of ice cream due to two large parties, prior to the 20, which wiped their supplies.
Lovely meal. Service a bit slow but waitress very good and kept us updated to meal progress. Lovely place friendly and relaxing x
The food and settings were excellent. The only thing letting it down was the service for some reason it was very slow, orders were wrong then kept bringing us more food we didn’t order. We would still go there again hoping this was just a one off.
The food was excellent. The staff got themselves in a bit of a muddle but nothing drastic and they were very amiable
Service was too slow but the food was good as well as setting
Veggie Burger was great, as was Fillet of Beef Stroganoff. Sausages and Mash was average. Service was fast and friendly. Slightly overpriced for what we received.
Superbly run pub. Well done to all the staff for keeping up their game !
Sunday roast....you won’t find better. Staff sweet but had to ask for menus, go to bar for drinks as Boone came over. Shame when it’s a table of 8. The staff that did serve us were very sweet. Not the cheapest but worth every penny.
I have been using the Black Horse for over 40yrs, I had hair then.
It has always had a great reputation, hard to maintain when changes occur but they seem to succeed.
My daughter on her days out with the old man allows me to buy her lunch, who’s a lucky boy then.
Although when booking (4pax) we asked for a table in the 'main' dining room, we were shown to a table in a dark area without a window, which we rejected. We were then offered a better table but still not in the dining room. After that everything was so-so. Food was OK, service also OK, but we asked for a dirty cup to be changed, which didn't seem to go down well. Altogether a disappointing visit.
We have been to the Black Horse many times and enjoyed ourselves .... but not this time.
Lovely food, quick service. I have gluten and dairy issues and the kitchen had no problems making me something delicious to eat. Will be returning for sure.
Great food can’t complain!
Easy to park, menu wide so catered for all our tastes from classic burgers to Asian beef dishes. Service great.
Extremely high noise level caused by party of over 20. Unfortunate.
Wonderful food cooked not assembled! Will be back in the near future
Tables for two appear to be located in ares left after placing larger tables. This leaves you located next to the passage of customers, staff and food. Did not feel one could relax at the table.
Lighting was rather too subdued.
Menu is trying to be too many things.
Cappuccinos were cold and rather flat.
Our dessert order was forgotten.
We visited with all the family including my two grandsons, for early dinner. All the food was very good, service prompt and friendly, and would definitely recommend it!
Not been for a while, but food still very good and enjoyable. Prawn cocktail very nice with plenty of prawns. Attention to detail could be better, requested “skinny fries” but it came with “triple cooked”. Staff very pleasant and friendly but service slow. Asked for vinaigrette twice and bill three times. Overall it was ok and I would return.
Great food Sunday lunch is so good and lovely staff. Can’t wait to go back .
