The Black Rat
A year after opening, the team acquired one of the most prestigious accolades in catering, a Michelin Star.
Our ingredients are sourced from some of the best local suppliers that can be found and we have our own forager who brings the most seasonal and fresh products available.
Located nearby is our kitchen garden where we grow some of our own herbs and vegetables, all of which helps to inspire the kitchen team to create their take on a “Modern British” menu.
The wine list boasts some 80 wines with a balance between Old and New world from our supplier Ellis Of Richmond. The list contains some iconic wines that are great with delicious food but also it has balanced and well rounded wine that can be enjoyed without food.
The atmosphere is relaxed but homely with lots to look at in all the rooms, and the service is informal but attentive.

Food was lovely and the work that had gone into it was appreciated by our friend who is a retired top level chef. Service was very good and did not feel that the food was overpriced for the standard. Only criticism was the price of the drinks which we felt was a bit excessive - £8 for a dry Martini and Lemonade. Happy to pay when you know that work has gone into preparation etc but not sure how the price of drinks is justified. Was still a lovely evening but price of drinks certainly made it very expensive.
One of our best restaurants lovely atmosphere friendly staff and lovely food
Great food with a twist. Have us the opportunity to try something new without feeling we were rolling the dice on the whole meal. Relaxed atmosphere, attentive service and a wine list that doesn’t break the bank. All round, a lovely evening
Birthday treat that was as good as it gets. Top notch
Dining perfection. The food is outstanding and the service exceptional, everything appears thought out including timings and well rehearsed introductions to the dishes.
Attentive friendly service, very pleasant atmosphere. Extensive, interesting wine list, our 2 bottles achieved my expectations, NZ Riesling and Gigondas. Stimulating different menu and all dishes the 4 of us had were first rate except for my Welsh Wagyu beef which was rather tough and not very tasty. Maybe not hung long enough? A quality meal at a sensible price.
This was a first visit after the venue was recommended. It exceeded all expectations, the food was brilliant and dining outside on a warm evening was ‘ the icing on the cake’.
Will certainly visit again.
Really nice quiet restaurant with a good homely atmosphere. Great food and amazing service staff!
Lovely food, atmosphere, service and wine list! Well worth the drive.
Great food, friendly service, nice ambience, no pretention. Not cheap but worth it for a special occasion or if you’ve got enough cash not to care!
As an allergy sufferer I was so impressed with being offered my own menu with adaption. I rarely get a choice and so it was a real treat. I can’t recommend them enough
Amazing once again fabulous attentive, friendly helpful staff. Food pretty as a picture and the flavours wow!! Never disappointed.
Can’t wait for our next visit.
Fantastic food, extensive drinks list (including a comprehensive gin menu) and a good atmosphere.
Fab food from a very unusual menu (check it out on-line). Very knowledgeable staff (they obviously get a thorough briefing from the chef) who are there when you need them but in no way pretentious or pestering. The food, we thought, was good value but the drinks a little pricey. However, tap water was offered, without being asked for. Quirky old building. I've been there once before but first time for my wife, who loved it; we'll be back.
Lovely evening at the restaurant. Food was amazing and service very attentive.
We were lucky enough to have been given a voucher by our son for this restaurant and lucky also that he was home and able to accompany us to share the experience. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the staff very attentive. We had the set lunch and each chose a different starter - all were outstanding and beautifully presented. The mains chosen were all lamb and again equally beautifully presented. Overall a wonderful experience and we hope to be able to go again in the future.
Another excellent meal: food, as ever, interesting, but not too interesting! Service is very friendly and not at all stuffy for a Michelin star establishment. Lunch is very good value. The vegetarian menu (available on request) is particularly noteworthy.
We didn’t think it lived up to its Michelin Star expectation
The food was amazing & service attentive without being intrusive. It was well worth the drive from Berkshire. Would highly recommend to others & certainly come back ourselves in the future. Thank you for a lovely evening
Fabulous food, knowledgeable, helpful staff. This was our 3rd visit and we'll be back soon.
A meal out to celebrate my husband's birthday. We were impressed with how knowledgeable the staff were on the food and wine list, helping us pair wine with what we had ordered. The food was great, well presented and we left satisfied. The gin list was an added bonus.
Very good starter and dessert, service was excellent and much improved from our last visit. Dietary requirements superbly catered for
One word Amazing!!! Would definitely recommend to anyone
Lovely food , very good service . An outstanding lunch.
We had the most wonderful time at this exceptional restaurant. The food was amazing and the service flawless. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Winchester
Warm friendly welcome and service throughout the evening. Varied menu well presented, I had the halibut starter followed by the frogs legs my wife had the quails eggs followed by lobster. All to the standard we had hoped for celebrating our anniversary. Would definitely return.
desert was too sweet, food was nice. lovely place overall
Amazing food in a very quirky and non pretentious setting. Great gin menu
Myself and my partner went here for his birthday. It was amazing, I am allergic to wheat, garlic and onion so find it hard to eat out. They catered for my needs and recreated the meals so I could have them. The only thing I would mention would be they have a lot of staff and at times it felt a tad rushed.
Fantastic food; innovative menu; great selection of gins and wines; super friendly staff; my wife’s favourite restaurant in Winchester, Hampshire and beyond
This isn't just a dinner out. It isn't even just food! It is a whole experience and it needs to be taken in that spirit when you first arrive. Forget that you can get a G&T in the pub opposite for half the price - this one is served lovingly by the barman - and with 30 gins to choose from you build up your appetite just deciding! And then the food. To be honest, almost every line of the menu (changes daily) had something on it that I didn't fancy - but when it all arrived together on the plate it is superb. The portions are small but perfectly balanced and it it makes you savour every bite and actually 'taste' what you are eating, rather than wolfing it down. The staff are wonderful - regular normal people - not putting on airs and graces, but proper human beings that treat you as one too which we really like. We went on a Monday night and it was full - with three birthdays! They made everyone feel like an individual - so well done to them all. Lucky for us it is our local restaurant - so we'll just be saving up again (as we did this time) and looking forward to the next excuse to come for a treat. Thank you to Team Black for being so consistent here in Winchester. Bless you.
Good food with some interesting and unusual combinations.
Service quite intense.
Restaurant nice and busy even on a Monday which is good.
Excellent food, lovely atmosphere and great staff.
Looking forward to our next visit.
The service was very friendly and helpful in talking us through the menu options, we had the Saturday set lunch menu which was interesting, varied and very tasty.
The food was obviously cooked with care and attention to detail with combinations of good flavours. It is very difficult to select a highlight but from the very first mouthful we knew we were in for a treat!
The pace of the meal was just right as we were there for just over two hours which gave us plenty of time to relax and enjoy the food.
We definitely plan to be back for more.
Fantastic meal lamb dish was sublime. Thank you also for taking some trouble to offer dairy free options for my wife.
First time at restaurant. Very nice food although a little pricey. Service a bit slow as place filled up. Lots of different flavours on plates. Foodies will like it
Food was interesting but atmosphere was not pretentious. We felt welcome and we'll looked after.
The care and imagination that had gone into the dishes was obvious and we throughly enjoyed our leisurely dinner.
Service was efficient but not intrusive.
Great meal for Father’s Day. Loved the food. You could tell that the food had been prepared with great care. Friendly, but not overly so, service. Waiters very knowledgeable about the menu and the history of the building. Parmesan and squid ink rolls were delicious as was the entire menu. The wine was excellent - Cabernet merlot.
Will definately go back.
Rustic yet smart decor. Up market feel to the place which made it more special.
Had a birthday voucher to use here and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Must admit, had slight trepidation when looking at the menu as it seemed quite unusual but, in fact, food was amazing and highly recommended. So much so, had to have another main just to sample a different dish! Will go back. Service was very good and staff knew what they were doing.
First visit to restaurant as we do not live locally but hopefully not our last. Service was impeccable as you would expect from this type of restaurant. The food was absolutely wonderful and very good wine and drinks menu. Would certainly recommend this restaurant although a little expensive for every day dining. We had to book quite a way in advance to get a table and in the end opted for a Sunday evening as wait was shorter. A lovely place.
