The Black Rat
A year after opening, the team acquired one of the most prestigious accolades in catering, a Michelin Star.
Our ingredients are sourced from some of the best local suppliers that can be found and we have our own forager who brings the most seasonal and fresh products available.
Located nearby is our kitchen garden where we grow some of our own herbs and vegetables, all of which helps to inspire the kitchen team to create their take on a “Modern British” menu.
The wine list boasts some 80 wines with a balance between Old and New world from our supplier Ellis Of Richmond. The list contains some iconic wines that are great with delicious food but also it has balanced and well rounded wine that can be enjoyed without food.
The atmosphere is relaxed but homely with lots to look at in all the rooms, and the service is informal but attentive.
We’ve been many times before & it remains it’s one of our favourites restaurants. The food is creative, flavoursome, absolutely superb. The service & staff are also thoroughly professional & absolutely superb.
The service was first class, the staff were super efficient and most attentive couldn’t be faulted, beautifully presented and well cooked.we found the menu a little on the fussy side but that could be put down to you unfamiliarity.
Short menu, really beautiful food, delightfully informal and excellent service. Big choice of wines with helpful and knowledgable sommelier. All round fab.
The highlight was our shared white chocolate dessert which was sublime. Steamed turbot was perfectly cooked but the overall dish a bit underwhelming; my trout starter was overwhelmed by beetroot. I found the menu a bit limited as others have said. I wouldn't usually have 2 fish courses but there wasn't much else that interested me. Service was very good, charming waiters, and the Chablis and Champagne did not disappoint. The room is an authentic Georgian house - unique and quirky. Expensive but not stupidly so....
A great evening. Friendly and attentive staff and excellent food. Thank you
Ideal for a special occasion.
Food was well cooked and well presented but did not suit all tastes.
A slightly wider choice preferable.
Service was good but staff hovering in the doorway is over attentive.
This place is a beautiful treat. Outside huts with heaters are lovely. Thank you to the Black Rat for consistent brilliance :)
We had a really good meal with friends at the Black Rat in early October.
We were welcomed nicely and had drinks in a lovely upstairs room and looked through the menu. The menu was interesting and, although reduced in range by the pandemic to 4 starters and 4 mains, we all managed to chose something we wanted.
We were shown to our table downstairs in the main dining room, and offered the most delicious bread I've had for a long time. Squid ink and parmesan rolls and a delightful focaccia with a seaweed butter. We enjoyed our starters and main meals but for me the freshly baked to order madeleines (which are always on the menu) with butterscotch and miso sauce were the absolute highlight.
My only tiny criticism would be that the lighting on our table was rather subdued and I struggled to see the menu or food easily.
Had a very nice meal and the staff were 1st class, will definitely visit again
Very good experience. Had it not been for a table of loud drunkards, I would say excellent.
Only thing I would change is the coffee, it’s quite a bitter roast
Fixed price menu very reasonable and flavours excellent
Our Terrine starters were unusual but full of flavour. My favourite was the hog get and lamb main.
Dessert was the Jerusalem artichoke and chocolate tart which we both enjoyed very much
Food tasted amazing. Staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient. They didn’t make you feel simple for asking about items on the menu. Looking forward to going again.
Very nice food, wine, cocktails, ambience, polite and knowledgeable staff but nobody was aloof.
We really enjoyed our meal at The Black Rat and the staff were really knowledgeable about pairings for drinks with the food. Would definitely recommend.
Staff very attentive, Fab layout & exceptional food!
We chose to dine at the Black Rat to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The service was impeccable, friendly but unobtrusive, very correct and efficient. The food was excellent, well presented and delicious. The meats that we had (quail, lamb, and duck) were all tender and succulent. The combination of flavours in all of the dishes was different, imaginative and tasty.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would highly recommend a visit.
Delightful experience. Relaxed. Fab staff. Great background music and... A. really tasty well considered flavoursome meal
Excellent option in Winchester. Great food for reasonable prices.
Just really good - service was on point and the food was well portioned and the taste was fantastic.
Very much enjoyed and 100% will visit again when back in Winchester
Food was amazing! And staff were really lovely! Would really recommend a visit. Only issue is there is a long wait between courses, but this was explained at the top of the menu.
Amazing place, the food was fantastic, the staff were very knowledgeable & friendly. We will 100% be back
We sat outside and it was very pleasant with good service.
The staff were all very friendly and attentive, they enquired about any dietary requirements which is encouraging when eating out. The food was unusual, but everything was cooked from fresh, which made our lunch an enjoyable relaxed afternoon. Would highly recommend.
Really good, loved it, hopefully will go back pretty soon.
A long overdue visit didn’t disappoint. Proper cooking, a great wine list and friendly, helpful service.
The quality of food and wine was outstanding - choice for both was terrific. The staff were all very friendly and helpful
Great food with unique menu choices delivered with amazing service
Great food and overall experience.
Great wine menu.
Reliably excellent. Interesting menu options. Friendly service. Great value.
We were in the garden so it was so peaceful. The staff were very polite and the service was fantastic. The food was delicious.
The food speaks for itself but the staff were also incredible. Gareth was especially attentive. My girlfriend made him aware it was my birthday and he gave us a glass of champagne and a free desert.
Food was spot on, and certainly deserves to still hold a star from what my family and I experienced. Unbelievable value for money as well.
Excellent food, presented well & tasted amazing.
We'll definitely be back.
We love going to The Black Rat.
The food is supurb, even if we've never heard of many of the ingredients!!
We had an excellent Meal. We were running late as just got engaged, so they kept the table and they gave us 2 glasses of complimentary champagne when we arrived. Definitely be going again
We had the most wonderful dining experience at the Black Rat last night with friends.
The food, atmosphere and dining experience in the outdoor huts were exceptional.
I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Lovely food, quite pricey but was delicious. Staff were good and was an enjoyable evening.
Their starter of rare beef is actually raw. The lamb for the main was incredibly dry but we were told it was supposed to be like that 🤔 Either way the whole meal was wildly over priced and not that great at all. The complimentary breads were nice and the service was great. But in all the food experience was somewhat pretentious and really not that good at all.
