The Black Rat Restaurant was converted from a pub into a quaint and quirky restaurant that is situated on Chesil Street.
A year after opening, the team acquired one of the most prestigious accolades in catering, a Michelin Star.
Our ingredients are sourced from some of the best local suppliers that can be found and we have our own forager who brings the most seasonal and fresh products available.
Located nearby is our kitchen garden where we grow some of our own herbs and vegetables, all of which helps to inspire the kitchen team to create their take on a “Modern British” menu.
The wine list boasts some 80 wines with a balance between Old and New world from our supplier Ellis Of Richmond. The list contains some iconic wines that are great with delicious food but also it has balanced and well rounded wine that can be enjoyed without food.
The atmosphere is relaxed but homely with lots to look at in all the rooms, and the service is informal but attentive.

Had a birthday voucher to use here and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Must admit, had slight trepidation when looking at the menu as it seemed quite unusual but, in fact, food was amazing and highly recommended. So much so, had to have another main just to sample a different dish! Will go back. Service was very good and staff knew what they were doing.

First visit to restaurant as we do not live locally but hopefully not our last. Service was impeccable as you would expect from this type of restaurant. The food was absolutely wonderful and very good wine and drinks menu. Would certainly recommend this restaurant although a little expensive for every day dining. We had to book quite a way in advance to get a table and in the end opted for a Sunday evening as wait was shorter. A lovely place.

Our party of four had a most enjoyable evening, which was marred, for me paying the bill, by the fact that the bill had been overcharged by double billing two desserts! There was no reason for this other than the bill had not been checked properly OR the recording of items on a bill is not satisfactory. When "optional" service charge is 12.5% this just should not happen.

Lovely food but strange ambience and front of house / service. Also refurbishment doesn't seem complete so again, strange for a supposed high class, high priced restaurant . Bit of a disappointment though have to pass on compliments to the chef - feel chef is being let down by everything else.

Really tasty selection with very friendly, helpful staff. I liked the blood sausage and my partner really enjoyed the frogs legs and snails, something for everyone; the lamb I had was also delicious. Lovely atmosphere. A little quirky, too. Recommended for something slightly different with a healthy imagination applied to food and decor.

The food was very good and service was excellent but the table was rather cramped and I thought a little too expensive for an ordinary wine .

Great food from a fairly limited menu. Some quirky service, however we enjoyed a lovely evening. Great gin cocktails, reasonably priced wine.

Food was very, very good. Imaginative, packed with flavour and beautifully presented. The smaller dining room (4 tables) is more intimate but that can be compromised if a loud foursome takes one of the tables. The larger room was much nicer in our opinion. Service should sharpen up a little to match the excellent level of cooking. Friendly but we felt a little forgotten at times. Just to put things in perspective that was all that stopped us rating the whole experience at 5 stars. Well worth the drive from Kent. Would not hesitate to recommend and have already alerted our foodie friends. We stayed (literally) across the road at the Black hole which has quirky rooms (cells), but in a nice way. Again very friendly staff who could not have done more to make our stay more enjoyable.

Having waited for weeks to find a reservation, we're left with mixed feelings. On the positive the staff were lovely and welcoming; the menu and wine list was quite extensive; majority of the food was delicious. on the negative, there were two 1) Our main meal was teh Lamb and it was not at all enjoyable. Tough. Sinewy. On a positive, there were apologies and recompense was sweet and accompanying sweet wine on the house. 2) The artwork is just weird. Lots of pictures of deconstructed human bodies, with the muscles deconstructed. Interesting in a museum but for me, not something I want to keep looking at on a special night. Overall, I'd give it another try, but I'm not in a hurry.

My brother and I and our respective spouses went here to celebrate yet another birthday. Mostly we had different things off the menu and we all said it was the best meal we had had recently, if not ever. Amazing food, good service and an interesting building.

Excellent meal, with really interesting dishes and a good tasting experience. Staff were very friendly and attentive, came quickly to offer us things and replenish our drinks, and it was a great evening at a very reasonable cost.

By the way, we enjoy our food, and don't take photos of it.

Truly outstanding! The best restaurant outside of London. Beautifully prepared dishes. Creative menu. They must be well on their way to their second Michelin star. The ambience is great and there is not a trace of ostentation. The service is perfect and not intrusive. The wine list is very adequate. It remains our favourite restaurant

Our only criticism was that staff were too quick to check whether our food was OK. And the same question was asked for every course, and pre-meal drinks. All a bit excessive.

Staff were very pleasant and helpful - changing the time of my table as my guest was late. Lovely cosy bar and great gin menu! Food was imaginative and generally very good although my consomme starter was luke warm and very salty and the pasta more than al dente! Everything else was great. The drinks are a bit expensive specially wine by the glass, but I would definitely go back.

Food was lovely, service was good. Disappointed that the drinks menu did not offer beer to start with. Whilst on the dessert I noticed that someone was drinking a nice cool beer. When I asked the waitress about this, the reply was.. ' We don't encourage people to drink beer ' by this time we were at the end of our meal.
The Gin options on the menu was impressive but prices not shown... When I questioned this with the the waiter he said.... ' We would rather the customer focuses on the wonderful choices than the price.
I am more than happy to spend good money but do like to know what I expected to pay at the end.

Another first class meal at our number one restaurant. So much attention is paid to the taste, texture and presentation of the food and nothing is predictable. The waiters are always friendly and welcoming and the ambience is warm and relaxed. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough.

The atmosphere and the service is the first thing you notice when you arrive at the restaurant. It is gorgeous and cosy inside and the staff are fabulous. My partner and I started with two glasses of Champagne because it was a celebration, the best excuse to crack out the bubbles. Starters I had Treacle cured Trout with caviar, my partner had Mushroom gyoza. For mains, I had the rabbit (sensational) and my partner had the pigeon, we had a bottle of Pinotage from my home country of South Africa to wash this down with. Desserts were squeezed in, I had the white chocolate popcorn cheesecake (YUM) and my partner had the Seabuckthorn dessert. Then to make things even better they brought out a candle in some of their rhubarb pudding - which is her favourite.

What an incredible evening, highly HIGHLY recommended!
