The Black Rat
A year after opening, the team acquired one of the most prestigious accolades in catering, a Michelin Star.
Our ingredients are sourced from some of the best local suppliers that can be found and we have our own forager who brings the most seasonal and fresh products available.
Located nearby is our kitchen garden where we grow some of our own herbs and vegetables, all of which helps to inspire the kitchen team to create their take on a “Modern British” menu.
The wine list boasts some 80 wines with a balance between Old and New world from our supplier Ellis Of Richmond. The list contains some iconic wines that are great with delicious food but also it has balanced and well rounded wine that can be enjoyed without food.
The atmosphere is relaxed but homely with lots to look at in all the rooms, and the service is informal but attentive.

Staying overnight in Winchester and decided to try the tasting menu here
Excellent food and a varied menu. Intend to go again
Was just ok . The food was not up to a Michelin star and I was a little disappointed.
Perfect venue for a special night out. The food was great, the wine list excllent, the staff incredible and the food simply stunning.
A good restaurant should be much better than you can cook at home. This was.
Michelin Star dining in a quirky setting in Winchester. Excellent food of the highest quality presented beautifully with attentive but not invasive service. Fantastic gin selection. Small but varied menu, maybe not great for fussy eaters but I doubt you'd bother with such fine dining if you were. Highly recommended.
Lovely food and excellent and friendly service. Very pleasing
Had the most amazing meal here. The staff were excellent, food exceptional. I will definitely be going back again. I can not recommend this place enough.
Fantastic food and service but as a Michelin stared restaurant it’s mainly for special occasions for most people.
The food was amazing as always
How they come up with the different combinations is just artistry
The chefs are at the top of their game.
The service is relaxed but very efficient.
A very enjoyable evening that was all about the food
Excellent, a very enjoyable and memorable experience. Will be back for sure
The staff were very friendly and most helpful. An excellent selection of wines. Like to have seen the chef, nothing better than a chef in his whites asking diners how there food was. Ours was excellent.
However and this is no reflection on the Black Rat, the lady customer sitting directly behind me was suffering from extremely bad BO ! I should not wish to experience this again in a restaurant.
Excellent food prepared with care and understanding of flavours and textures to provide a unique experience. it is not an ostentatious place and does not put on a performance of faux attention. It is honestly excellent food and the service is considerate and unobtrusive. Overall an experience not to be missed and well deserving of its Michelin rating.
The weekend lunch menu is always good value for money . We are always made to feel very welcome.
Superb food, lovely personnel, attractive property and lovely calm, quiet atmosphere
The Black Rat was a very enjoyable experience. We hadn't been to a Michelin starred restaurant before although we have been to many really good restaurants over our 44 years married life. Everything on the menu looked very interesting so we decided to go for the tasting menu. That was a really good choice as there were a whole range of food experiences in the 6 courses so no difficult decisions to be made. the wine pairings were very good and kept the cost levels at a reasonable level for this standard of restaurant. It's definitely a restaurant I'll go back to as it's setting in what looks like an old pub was unpretentious and snug.
We really enjoyed the Black Rat the staff were very attentive & took time to explain the menu & wine list. Beautiful old building
We loved everything about the Black Rat from the quirky decor, romantic ambience, welcoming professionalism of the staff, great drinks to the totally amazing food. Every course was creatively prepared with the freshest ingredients and wonderful flavours. We are not local but would go back to Winchester just to dine there!
Very impressed with the food, very inventive without it being to out there, service was friendly and not to formal, tasting menu was good value, will definitely visit again
We were delighted to be accommodated at short notice and were given an excellent table, which, though central, conferred a sense of intimacy upon our spontaneously arranged soirée, owing to the thoughtful arrangement of the room. The service was undertaken with an exemplary lightness of touch, with certain of the more obscure components of the exquisite courses being explained to us patiently, intelligently and with no trace of affectation. The terrine was outstanding, the lamb succulent and the dessert that I chose, a white chocolate confection accompanied by a citrus sorbet, liquorice macaroon and a black sesame seed crisp was a synthesis of all things delicious. We shall be returning, soon enough, though not with such frequency as to diminish the sense of occasion, for this is quite a special small restaurant and dining here should not be an everyday affair, notwithstanding its proximity to where we live. Excellent!
We were given a voucher for our Golden Wedding and weren't sure what to expect. The menu was like nothing we had experienced before. The staff were very willing to explain anything we didn't understand. Nothing was rushed and there was plenty of choice on our Sunday lunch menu. We sat in a heated hut in the garden, which was delightful. The food was well presented and well designed. We really enjoyed our meal, and were treated to a special dessert at the end in honour of our celebration. Loved the black bread and the special butters. Don't be afraid that it's a bit unique, go give it a try. You won't regret it.
Warm welcome, fantastic service and the Food is outstanding. Perfectly romantic for a special occasion. This was my second visit and was just as perfect as the first. Can’t wait to visit again!
Wonderful lunch, in a very pleasant setting. Staff were very helpful
Nice set of meals, with different taste and inspirations. It would be nice to have more options for wine pairing.
As always the food was great and the differing tastes make the food so interesting to taste.
Really lovely experience here. The staff was really nice and knowledgable, the place has a real charm and the food was beautiful. We’ll be back!
Excellent service polite helpful and the food absolutely amazing
Great food as always! I would definitely recommend a visit.
Went for a birthday treat. It was made extra special by the top notch service and delicious food.
WC also clean and tidy.
a great experience , even with excellent assistance there were items on the menu that didn't tally with the plate, for instance 'skate wing' is not a fish rissole..... explosion of taste but a bit too innovative for me.... third visit but not sure that I will return.
Always excellent - one of the best restaurants in the UK, never mind Hampshire or Winchester.
Always wanted to eat in a Michelin starred restaurant so we chose a lunchtime visit to The Black Rat. We thought the food was amazing and worth the extra expense. A treat rather than a regular occurrence but we would love to return for a Saturday evening meal one day.
Outstanding food - really exceptional but the restaurant was lacking somewhat in ambience. Would like to have seen more engagement/smiles on behalf of three of the four waiting staff but main criticism is vast overpricing of alcohol (wine particularly - eg £12.50 for a medium glass of Shiraz) which rather detracts from the experience and leaves one feeling ripped off. Such a shame as the food is very reasonably priced.
Amazing food and service, we tried the taster menu, lovely experience. Definitely recommend and will return.
Absolutely superb, as always-in every way and lovely to have a calm atmosphere.
Enjoyed the textures and individual flavours in the dishes we chose for each course. Exceptional quantity of flavours yet remaining individually identifiable to taste.
A very happy evening- a special treat.
Hidden away in the ground floor of what might've been a rooming house - we'd have liked to have read about the house- we were warmly greeted and given a choice of tables. The Ambience was wonderful, quite a romantic place or somewhere to take a small group of friends, it had a warm country feel to it whilst having the service/table sophistication one would expect with a Michelin Star restaurant. We elected the Tasting Menu and half bottle Wine Match per recommendation. The food was well presented and tasty. Some combinations we weren't so sure about and I resisted the urge to season my dishes as I respect this is how the chef wants their dishes tasted tasted. My favourite was the dessert with macaroon.
Overall an enjoyable experience but we weren't *amazed* which is our usual feeling from at least one dish when visiting Australian chef hat restaurants.
We really enjoyed our experience at The Black Ready, the food was really good and interesting with lots of different flavours and textures.
The staff were really friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was lovely, relaxed and homey. The feeling of being in a nice old pub, how they used to be until they went and whitewashed them all and turned them into the same wherever you go.
The price isn't as much as I thought it would be for a michalin stared restaurant. Obviously it isn't cheap, unless you are wealthy this place probably won't be your weekly call. However if you like going out to eat at nice restaurants and are used to paying a bit for your meals, it isn't really that far outside of that range, I would say.
We were celebrating my husband’s birthday (the candle was put in the wrong pudding but that was ok!!!) so it was a special occasion for us.
We were not disappointed. The food and specials were explained to us and we were given time to have a drink and peruse the menu before sitting down to eat. There was an appropriate amount of time between ordering and receiving each course. The food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. I couldn’t fault anything about our wonderful experience at The Black Rat and would highly recommend your restaurant to friends. Thank you for a lovely evening!
We had a fantastic meal. We tried the taster menu. My husband has a severe fish allergy. We contacted the restaurant before hand and they adapted the taster menu for us. We had 6 indulgent courses of delicious food, safe in the knowledge it was fish free. The service was excellent and setting perfect. We stayed next door in the B&B, linked to the restaurant and it was lovely! Perfect evening.
