BONFIRE NIGHT 06/11/17
This is a massive event where we will be pulling out all the stops with a huge bonfire and firework display. just ask for details, we will be happy to chat about it.
Nice place always happy to help. Even get off menus food if we ask. X
We were a party of 6: 2 of us had the fish and chips, which was good, 1 had the steak, which was good, and 3 had the chicken. The chicken arrived burnt in the case of one diner, and the other two regarded the standard of cooking of their chicken flat-iron was below a good standard.
The service was fairly slow.
When the diner with the burnt chicken complained, the waitress correctly removed the dish for later replacement but on the complaint being made, her response was "No worries" whereas she should have been trained to say on such occasions, "I'm very sorry". A diner whose meal has arrived burnt does not want to be told "No worries".
The competition among "gastro-pubs" in Surrey is strong, and the Black Swan will have to improve its cooking and service if patrons who have enjoyed it in the past are to return.
The food was excelant, staff pleasant and no problem with half the party arriving very late.
Lovely anniversary dinner with the family. Great meal and service as usual.
Had a lovely afternoon lunch with friends, seated near a window in the corner, which was very cosy.
The food was lovely, although the food for the table choice, a mixture of green beans, pesto, mozzarella and bread was certainly way too small for 4 people. It was delicious but more of an amuse-bouche.
Everyone enjoyed their food and there was plenty of it, although the market fish option was not as generous a portion compared to everyone else's choice.
We all had a dessert, plus tea/coffee and these were all very enjoyable.
Ambience was good but a lot depends upon others in the restaurant. For the first half of our meal everything was fine, then a large party arrived and were seated on the table behind us.
At this point the volume in the place went up considerably and whilst we weren't quite shouting to be heard, it was certainly a less relaxing atmosphere.
I appreciate this is outside of the control of the restaurant but you would want another table for a quiet/romantic dinner.
Service was fine although it was very, very busy and we were waiting close to the upper limit of acceptability between the 'for the table' food and the main meal. Also when we wanted to pay we seemed to chose the same time as half the restaurant, so we were waiting a while for the card payment machine.
We've eaten here several times before and will continue to do so.
The food and service at the Black Swan were very good as usual but just a couple of niggles this time. One of our party was told the barrel had been changed on the Timothy Taylor beer and he clearly had the end of the barrel. He did drink about half of his beer but clearly wasn’t enjoying it ( he had already had 1 pint) and so told our waiter that it wasn’t right. He only had a half replaced but you charged him for it on the final bill! The gracious thing to have had done was to have given it on the house. Our friend was not looking for a freebie and he went on to drink more different beer so we spent plenty on beer that day.
Secondly, slapping 12.5% on the final bill is a bit steep. I think you need to be careful that you don’t price yourselves out of the market because your food, though good, is not cheap to start with. An automatic 10% on a bill is enough - you are not in London but the Surrey countryside. You need to be exceptional all round for customers to accept that add on and it clearly wasn’t that good an experience, as stated above. We’ve always enjoyed your pub but be careful because suddenly casual dining becomes expensive dining and customers weigh up whether it’s worth travelling to you.
Good food and service but i dont like service charge being added to the bill so you have to ask to have it removed, felt embarrased.
Had a lovely time. Meet for lunch with a friend. Good service, menu choice and atmosphere. Will definitely go again
Nice country pub within easy reach of Cobham and A3. We went on a Tuesday night so it was quiet. Nice warm welcome and friendly service. Menu is reasonably priced. Starters were excellent (recommend th crac scotch egg which was cooked fresh with a runny yolk). Slightly let down for length of wait for the main course (think our food was left standing for some time) and the completely overdone sea bass high was like a piece of card board.
I am usually so impressed by the food, however at this time everything seemed overcooked/ as if it had been sitting around e.g. the potatoes were tough and the yorkshires weren’t as nice as usual either. Service was a little slow which I found odd as it was quiet at the time.
Booked up at least 3 weeks in advance for our party of 4 and were put in a room with 2 tables of 8-10 people and several children. Therefore the noise was too loud to hear each other talk. Not happy. The food was ok but well over priced. The menu did not represent the reality for example I had Avocado and Tomato. The smaller description included reference to quinoa. I got a plate of quinoa with a few baby tomatoes and maybe 1/2 a diced avocado. Very disappointing. Used to enjoy the Black Swan, not any more.
Food very nice as always. Prices a bit high (but we are in Surrey!). Unfortunately the fish was not available on this occasion which was a bit of a problem since we invited a pescetarian to make her discover the Black Swann for the first time 😥
Food is always superb and usually the service is too. Bit hit and miss on this occasion - we waited 30 mins for our lunch which is quite a long time and then the guy brought the wrong food for our table. Not as attentive as it is usually.
This is one of our go to places when we fancy eating out locally, food is always good and service is excellent
I had booked a table for two for my first wedding anniversary which was on a Sunday. Table booked for 7pm. There were 8 things on the menu that was not available and because there was nothing else either of us wanted we had to leave without eating which spoilt our special celebration. I would never go there on a Sunday evening again.
This is a wonderful restaurant. The setting is beautiful, easy to find, the tables are not too close together so there is privacy and the outdoor eating experience was just lovely. The food is fresh, innovative and simply delicious.
Despite booking well in advance, they put us by the kitchen. Extremely noisy Sunday lunch with kids everywhere and place v busy - fair enough. However, food took 45 minutes to arrive. Also, vegetarian option had deteriorated since our last visit and was paltry veg wellington; more like a spring roll. Plus, one of us was given the wrong pudding. Wrong place to go for an elderly relative's birthday lunch. Pleasant staff, but won't be going again.
Good food, well cooked. Bit odd that the menu sent by email didn’t match the one at the table. We didn’t ask about that as the table menus was fine. Had rather hoped the message I sent with the booking would have led to a happy birthday to my wife, but none forthcoming. Nevertheless. We will happily return to eat.
Very nice all in all. Atmosphere, service and food. Recommended.
This is how gastropubs should do it.
Fabulous menus with wonderfully tasting dishes at reasonable prices
Good wine list and great service from lovely young people who seem to really take pride in doing it well
This is a model others should aspire to
Fantastic food, staff and ambience, modern yet cosy and spacious. Location is great for walkers or if you need a break from the M25!! Service is quick and attentive. Garden is lovely and the BBQ is amazing. Definitely one of our favourite pubs/restaurants around.
Really good food and value for money very friendly staff but you can get a bit forgotten sometimes with the service but overall a lovely pub!
We had a(nother) great family meal at the Swan on Sunday - food was great, late summer sun was beautiful and the service was excellent from the team which really made it overall a 5* experience
The manager was great she really made our day out special !
Appalling service on Sunday. We usually love this place but it absolutely fell short of the mark on an important occasion. This unfortunately will not be forgotten. Together with our waitress telling our 3 year old that her drawing was 'inappropriate'!!??? Very confused little girl...
Great to catch up with old colleague. Quick service. Plenty to f parking. Just off m25/a3 so easy to get to - in countryside
The Black Swan has been a favourite of mine for a few years now and it seems to get better. I've never had a bad meal there and this weekend I tried their vegan fish and chips for the first time - totally unfussy but well executed. Likewise the avocado and quinoa salad was delicious; simple, but often that's the best way. It's what you want out of a weekend pub lunch, decent food in a comfortable and relaxed setting. The staff are without exception lovely, warm and accommodating (and they were really sweet about our dogs which always gleans brownie points). Keep up the good work.
Fabulous pub tucked out of the way. Very busy on a bank holiday but the food was still really tasty and delivered in good time. Lovely atmosphere with lots of different types of seating from benches in the garden to booths inside. A well stocked bar was attractive and centre stage. The rosemary and truffle fries were to die for. We will be back!
We'd been to The Black Swan many times over the years and it is with regret that we have been noticing a stark change in service levels which may well depend on the several changes in management. Our last visit has not met our expectations. Despite having booked a table online at a time which is not particularly busy, they made us wait for an available one which we asked to change as it was not suitable ( next to a garden door, it was raining on the day, there were four of us plus a baby on a pram).
Service was in itself disappointing, with a long waiting time before the meal. It was almost 3.30pm in the afternoon. The Manager seems to be more concerned about pleasing "certain" customers rather than providing an overall satisfactory service to all diners. She did not strike us as professional. Her appearance and manners lacked that courtesy and professionalism we had known the place for. Not a good dining experience overall.
Service was polite and friendly, but slow and inattentive. Food was mixed — two dishes quite good, and two were served cold (e.g., chicken breads with lump of butter on top that didn’t melt at all)
We really enjoyed visiting the restaurant and sat outside in the garden patio section. great place, great food and great service.
Would recommend to everyone!
excellent food good wine list great staff
great outdoor area, lovely inside as well
Our waitress Natalie was very attentive, and informative. She talked us through all the specials, drinks and food. Overall service and food was very good. Generous portions too.
We had been previously and were taking friends for the first time, who enjoyed both the food and the location.
A favourite of ours, beautiful surroundings in the countryside, friendly knowledgeable staff and great roasts. The dessert menu was a little uninspiring on our visit, it was missing Sunday lunch style desserts with sticky toffee and brownie and summer pudding being the only non ice cream / semi Freddo style options when infant you're craving a Sunday style dessert like a good crumble or pie!
We were greeted promptly and pleasantly and wine came quickly - the service deteriorated from there to decidedly slow. We were early for our table whjch didn’t cause a problem and we were taken straight in and two courses and two coffees later, were almost the last to leave
Appalling slow service. Awful menu - they had run out off several dishes by 1pm. Needs managing more efficiently. Fabulous setting let down by tasteless food. Will not be returning.
Great pub - family friendly , quick service with good size portions
What more can you ask for ?
Been here before and food was good. This time, however, service was dreadful.
Got the order wrong on several items, from serving a soup we didn't order, to getting the accompaniments wrong on a steak main meal, it was just service that was full of mistakes.
The serving itself was fine and courteous, but the order processing and order taking must have been dreadful to make so many mistakes. To top it all off, all the mistakes were not removed from the bill and we had to check ourselves.
5 of us went out for a friends get together.
Only 4 of our starters came at the same time, with the fifth one coming when 3 of us had finished.
The white wine that was ordered did not arrive in time to have with our starters and when it did arrive it was warm.
Then when our main course arrived again they only brought 4 out of 5.
We all wanted to enjoy the evening catching up with gossip etc but ended up talking about the poor service.
After we had finished our meal we went to the bar for one more drink but the barman had disappeared leaving us waiting around again.
Most of us were drinking gin and tonics but Gordon’s and Bombay Saphire we’re not available.
I spoke about our evening to the barman and asked for the bill. They took the discretionary service charge off ( we weren’t going to pay that anyway) plus 10%.
My previous visit was fine but we have been really put off from ever visiting again.
We had booked for 8.30 on Friday night but arrived an hour early and were able to have our table early. The evening temperature was perfect for our outside table. The food is of a high standard and well presented. The staff were very attentive.
