Very poor experience, started with half the starters not available, pork roast was overcooked, had to wait an age for plates to be cleared once mains were finished, once they were cleared we had to ask for a desert menu as it wasn't offered. After ordering desert the waitress came back to say they didn't have the desert we ordered and then the final straw was after waiting to pay the bill for another huge wait, the waitress said "I'll get the card machine and come straight back" and then proceeded to another table to take their order! When taking the bill to the bar to pay I asked for the optional 12.5% service charge to be removed and the manager didn't ask if anything was wrong! They seemingly don't care and unfortunately the poor service seems endemic as this is our 2nd visit and on both occasions the service was woeful! Won't be going back...
Four of us dined on Saturday night. The service was less than mediocre and the food was appalling. In brief: the burger was over cooked, the pasta was tasteless and looked revolting, the fish pie was dry and over cooked and the macaroni cheese was watery and tasted like it had come out of a tin. The cheese board available on the dessert menu consisted of only cheddar! And as for the delicious sounding side dish of sautéed French beans with a softly poached egg - see photo........
Our experience was extremely good. The staff are excellent. They are friendly, helpful and courteous. The food is very good and freshly cooked. The range of beers is good as is the wines available. It was a sunny day so people were able to sit outside in the large garden. The children have lots of room to "express themselves", especially with the play area.
Good food and great service at a reasonable price. A bit of a drive but worth it particularly in the better weather as you can sit outside
Food was brilliant-really was. Good value and really cooked by someone who clearly cares
As usual, from this popular eatery, we had excellent service from friendly staff and a great Sunday Lunch. Good portions ( roast beef and all the trimmings plus pork and chicken all were consumed with gusto ) Sticky toffee puds rounded off the meal - appreciated by all. 4 very contented customers couldn’t eat another thing !
The Black Swan never fails to disappoint, so accommodating as we were with a baby and a dog and they make you feel right at home. Food was amazing and the staff are ten out of ten :)
Great food, with a few twists on the pub classics which keeps things interesting. Service was friendly, a tad slow at times. Unfortunately we were seated next to a large family at the next table. I’m all for bringing the children along but please keep the noise levels down to a reasonable level. So we moved table as I didn’t want to have to shout at my friend all the way through lunch. The desserts were divine.
Lovely location, good food and good service, special attention paid as it was my birthday
A wonderful place to eat, drink and meet up with friends and family.
Set in a lovely part of Surrey, and surrounded by great countryside.
The choice of food/dishes is very good, very good quality, reasonably priced, and the service we had was 2nd to none. All this complemented a wonderful romantic date.
Thank you, and we will be back.
Best Sunday lunches. Very friendly , helpful service.
Delicious food, vegan tofu salad was so tasty and fresh. Service lovely.
My first visit to this recommended gastro pub. Full marks for polite service, no canned music, tables not too close together, thus allowing conversation without shouting, delicious food with sensible portion sizes and value for money.
Service was exceptional - quick, friendly, non-intrusive. Quite noisy / lively atmosphere but excellent food and tables not too close too each other to be a problem.
Fourth visit, same high standards, great food and good value. Happy to drive 30 mins to get here, great meet up location.
My wife and I had a really good experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Sunday lunch we had was delicious. We both chose the roast beef and it was one of the best plates of food we've every had. We'll certainly be returning.
It was a quiet afternoon allowing for the staff to show their sincere service or obnoxious attitude. Thankfully they were attentive and warm. The food was served in a timely manner. One disappointment was that both with my reservation here and when I entered the establishment mentioning this was a birthday celebration for my guest, NOTHING was said or even acknowledged! No candle on the sorbet or small token of shortbread . I guess Birthday celebrations at Gastro Pubs aren’t important unless you’re standing at the bar drinking all day!
Large posh pub eatery. Nice decor, large car park, good menu. Dined here several times before. It is quieter at lunch time. The food was very tasty, good size and nicely presented. The service was a bit slow, having to ask for service a couple of times rather than proactive service. I would recommend dining here for a relaxed friends meet up.
Other than my Mums, the roast beef is the best i have ever eaten
The staff are lovely, waiting, FOH and bar staff, the ale is great and the food is excellent
A great pub that never disappoints
The Black Swan is a great pub to meet friends or take a person there on a date. Great decor and bar area but most of all I have always had great food here. Would always recommend highly to anyone.
The staff are very attentive most of the time however on this occasion after being seated we were not approached within a reasonable time and in the end I went to the bar myself to get some drinks. We then had to get the attention of one of the staff in order to order food.
In the defence of staff it was very busy in the venue due to it being Mother's Day however it is my belief that staff should at least acknowledge your presence and do there best to get to you or explain why they can't do so.
The experience has not put me off visiting again or recommending it, this is just a heads up to staff or anyone visiting to bear in mind.
Lovely place for a special occasion and nice and close to RHS Wisley for a family day out
Good food excellent service reasonably priced can have a conversation without being overheard. The staff are well trained and helpful.
Great get together with friends. Really lovely atmosphere and decour and the food was spot on. Only downside was it was really warm in there! Would definitely go back.
A great venue - manager Becky is very welcoming. As visitors from Australia its the best we’ve experienced in the area. Food outstanding with lots of options from light bites through to larger main courses
Came here for Friday lunch, good choices on the menu including tasty veggie curry. Usual mistake that some menu descriptions are rather meaningless and give no idea what the dish is actually like. My mum enjoyed her favourite sticky toffee pud and it was nice to have a choice of some decent cheeses. Overall a good place to eat although expect to pay Surrey prices!
When I arrived at the bar, the single bar man serving, spent a minute or so dealing with a regular customer's gift card transaction (evident as they were on personal terms). After that, he just walked off without greeting me.
When the main bar man for the evening appeared, he then greeted and served a second customer who had arrived 5 minutes after me without asking who was next. The other customer apologised to me.
The bar and restaurant were evidently very short staffed.
When eating our food, the waitress politely asked if the food was ok, and the food was nice. We weren't ever asked if we would like another drink and I had to keep looking for someone to ask when we did want another.
When I went to the bar at the end of the evening to ask for the bill, because no one was around, I was acknowledged, but after ten minutes I had to ask who was bringing the bill. The bar man then asked a waiting staff colleague.
The food was good, not great (pasta a bit stodgy) nice flavour, the premises is beautifully decorated and looks very inviting.
The service was shocking. When you eat out, especially on a date, you don't expect to go looking for staff.
The staff that were available that night probably had too much to do, but it wasn't busy (Thursday eve) so I suspect not the management aren't attracting enough thoughtful staff.
I wouldn't say avoid this place. It's ok, but you may be the tail wagging the dog.
A very enjoyable evening. The service and food were both very good. Lovely log fire!
Lunch was great for my husbands birthday last Sunday. We had 2 young babies in pushchairs with us and the staff could not have been more accommodating. Only down side was that the bread for the starter was stone cold but it was soon and quickly rectified. Would definitely recommend and will be coming again soon!
The only table available for Sunday lunch was 2.45pm and even though the restaurant wasn't full we had to wait a long time for our main courses.
We had mentioned when booking on-line that it was for a birthday. However, no mention of this was made by the waiting staff. Why bother to ask in the first place?
Overall a positive experience, nice food but nothing amazing. Very small puddings served on very large plates!
Do object however to 12.5 % being automatically added to the bill. We feel it should be left to the customers discretion.
The manager who greeted us as we arrived was very pleasant and was able to re-arrange our table as a larger table next door had overtaken our table.
Unfortuently the service from the waiters wasnt acceptable, didnt understand our order and brought out our food at the wrong time. However the manager stepped in and made sure the food was redone and we enjoyed a lovely lunch after that. The manager went out of his way to ensure my girlfriend and I had a great lunch in the end. Would visit again if in the area.
We had been to the Black Swan in the summer and enjoyed a very good lunch with friends however on this trip we were left underwhelmed. The service was friendly and quick but the quality of the food was mediocre, my wife had a rissotto from the special board and I the beer battered fish and chips the rissotto was luke warm and the batter on the fish as overcooked. Would we return? possibly.
friendly staff. good food. nice pub environment. good drinks selecetion
My fish pie was cold however the waitress took it away and heated it.
Service in this pub is friendly but not overly so. The atmosphere is great and in the summer the outdoor space is most attractive . The staff are very good at passing messages eg: by phone "We are stuck on the M25 and will be with you in about 30 minutes. Please locate our friend
Mr xxxxxx and get him a drink whilst he waits"
lovely ambiance combimed with good food and good service !
Favourite venue for a fabulous Sunday lunch. Food is consistently very good .
Friendly staff , amazing roast dinner and nice looking pub :)
Excellent county pub with high quality food and plenty of choice plus real ale and a good wine list. Service was fine - friendly and helpful. A favourite of ours in this area.
Food good as usual; service was unusually hit and miss. Ambience was a little odd couldn’t put my finger on what it was - but possibly the chatter of the tv in the corner
The food is excellent the oysters were very fresh and tasteful and have to be the best i have had, the rest of the meal was just as good it is lovely to not be rushed and just enjoy good food at our own pace.
Great ambience, lovely food and the staff couldn’t do enough for you. Looking forward to spending mother’s day here with my family.
