The Black Swan Ockham
A delightfully eclectic eatery the pub & restaurant presents a stunning international wine list, a great selection of real ales and a cosmopolitan décor with open fires and plenty of comfy seating. During the summer months enjoy one of Surrey"s finest Al fresco dining experiences in our beautiful gardens.
Lovely restaurant but it could have been warmer and we were sat next to a very loud table
Had the mussels to start with which were faultless so tender cooked perfectly, main was the roast turkey with all the trimmings which again was cooked very well. Highly recommend.
Have been before for work related lunch but went with my family on Sunday, it was great, especially the service.
Despite having has The Black Swan Ockham recommended to me I will not be going back in a hurry!
The place looked and felt very festive which was nice. I booked online but saw no mention of a tribute night which frankly ruined our evening Whilst the service was fabulous it was completely let down by the 'okay food'. Lamb was requested 'pink' but arrived overcooked with very little shepherds pie accompaniment. The rest of the food was nice as was the first half of the evening.
Once the tribute night entered it's 2nd half we couldn't hear the person sat opposite us so conversation was impossible. Other diners had complained so we didn't bother but the staff seemed to be well aware as didn't charge us any service.
Overall a very disappointing evening.
We like the pub and the food but I have to say our visit was ruined by a very public and VERY LOUD private party. Live dance music and 100 people talking over the music made it close to impossible for our little group of five friends to converse at all.
I think we should have been warned of this party in advance.
We had a lovely meal, I'd only ask if we could have a plate rather than a wooden board. I had cottage pie, beautifully cooked but it was a faf to eat from the tin it was presented in. Only because it was pulled beef rather than mince and I needed to wrap the meat around my fork in bigger mouthfuls than I'd have liked. But it was delicious.
Very long wait (more than 30 minutes) between starter and main course even though this was simply soup of the day. Restaurant about half full so I shudder to think what it would be like when full.
Would not recommend for this reason.
Room was spacious, quiet and comfortable. Reception was distant and not welcoming. The kitchen was obviously flummoxed by our request for a list of coeliac-compliant dishes and took 25 minutes to arrive. The waiting staff were inattentive; we had to find someone to place our order with. The food then took 40 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant was only half full. The one vegetable side dish arrived another 15 minutes later. The food did taste freshly home-cooked, but some portions were small. It was hard work getting attention whenever we needed something, even the bill. Overall, it was not service with a smile and it all took far longer than it should have done.
Have been here several times with my elderly parents. Great atmosphere, food is generally great. Not so great this time, sadly. I didn't feel well after the meal and my parents only ate half their plates. However, we may have been unlucky and will come back here agin, maybe not as soon as normal though.
Staff were great however wait time for food very slow.
Great food, location and service
The avocado fritti is a must with your first drink
I'm unsure why the live singer was there though, he was good, but not necessary IMO
Great value festive lunch. Excellent food and drinks.
Food was good, as usual. Service a bit slow but then I haven't been on a Saturday lunch for some time and the inside was full. Coffee & treat option for dessert was strange - coffee came from bar quickly & treat didn't arrive until later after coffee had been drunk. Table behind us was particularly noisy since they seemed to know everyone else who came in and had to have long & loud catch up conversations with them.
A very pleasant evening, great ambience, very good food nicely presented and very pleasing decor. However, what really made it such a lovely evening was Jo, our waitress. She was charming and very attentive at just the right level.
We will definitely be eating at the Black Swan again.
Having not visited the Black Swan in probably 35 years, I was hoping that some of its 'olde world' charm might still exist ... but no. It is a soulless place with little atmosphere. The staff were great and the food okay, although it took a long time to arrive, despite it being a relatively quiet late lunchtime. I think this would be a better summertime place to visit as the outside spaces looked very nice. Overall, not a terrible place to eat, but there are plenty better nearby.
Main courses served only cool and had to return 4 meals. In a party of 6 i and my wife then were left to eat our main courses alone! We both had fish and chips. The food was hot but served on cold plates. Very poor. The chips were also not fully cooked. we will not return.
Lots of covers, cold food, slow on accompaniments. Shame as have had a number of good meals there. Maybe too many customers not enough staff, was my Sunday experience.
Excellent service and one disabled member of the family very well looked after. Thank you.
We had a lovely lunch catching up with friends. The portions are generous, so after starters and mains, we were very full! The waitress was helpful and attentive with drinks. I'd definitely recommend lunch here and we'll be back again soon.
The food was lovely and the service was very attentive. We went on a Saturday and last minute had a member of our party drop out but were still accommodated on a big table and actually given an option of tables to choose from. Speed of service and food arriving was great, although there were a couple mistakes with drinks orders going to the wrong table at first but that’s nothing to complain about. I guess because it was a Saturday there is expected to be more noise, we were seated next to two larger tables of about 10 people each so for my Dad and I it was a bit too loud, thankfully one of the tables left halfway through our sitting. Overall really good food, the mushroom and truffle arabcini was slightly lacking in truffle, but the duck breast main really made up for it. Would recommend and definitely come back on a quieter evening
Our waitress Jo was delightful and looked after us very well.
Food was delicious and the large glasses of Merlot perfect.
I am a fan of the Black Swan anyway but this visit just added to my view that it is an excellent dining place
Fabulous as always. Great food, warm atmosphere and really lovely staff.
Great food and friendly service. We were allowed a decent pause between courses. Only four star rating was as we were sat in what seemed to be the family section so a bit noisy. Other than that, first class.
Excellent service in very nice location. Food great, but one meal wasn't hot enough - sent back to kitchen and improved, though plate was cold. Portions a little on the small side, but delicious.
good location for a business lunch. Well appointed place for casual dining at a decent level with good service from friendly staff. Would recommend. Have used the place for many years
Food was good. I have been here before and had the most amazing meal but the second time didn’t match the first sadly! The service was alright, but when the waiter did come to us when asking us questions he seemed very distracted by other things going on around so he wasn’t seemingly listening.
The food portion sizes were good but the pork was quite chewy in places.
Very good attentive service on a busy Sunday evening. We were unaware that there was bonfire and firework display there that evening. Food was a bit hit and miss though.
A fine venue for a family get together. Reliable food choices, well presented and served in tasteful surroundings
Our lunch was served late after a long wait, so long in fact that I had to ask where it was. One of the main courses wasn't what we had ordered so a last minute delay occurred while a roast beef lunch was prepared which then arrived without a Yorkshire pudding as it was forgotten in the haste I imagine. After a simple shared starter, our main course was served 1 hour and 15 minutes after we had arrived. This is too long. The portion sizes varied considerably. The roast chicken and beef portions were generous, whereas the pork serving was much smaller, especially once fat had been removed.
Even after the delay and the serving of a dish that we hadn't ordered, when the bill arrived, the full service charge was added on and the waitress put it all through to the card payment machine without asking if we wanted to pay it all. In polite fashion we paid in full and left but I was left feeling that we hadn't been treated fairly and that the service charge was seen as just another part of the bill, not a reflection of the service that we had received, which had been poor.
Very enjoyable Saturday afternoon dining, food and service excellent!
We had a wonderful time at the Halloween event here.
Barbara and her staff made us most welcome and the food was top-notch.
Cold and noisy as a large family party turned up making conversation difficult. Food was ok.
Our waitress was super-attentive while the food was largely good. The hake with bean, chorizo and spinach stew was tasty but over-salty while the prawn linguine was plentiful.
Enjoyed our lunch very much. Did find it quite noisy though.
A friendly welcome and a ready table although other tables were available if we wished. Good menu and excellent service and presentation
Our first time here. Fantastic roast dinner. Will definitely be back. Thank you Abbie for making us feel welcone
Fantastic pub, wonderful for a sunday lunch/dinner. Great value, delicious menu, attentive staff.
Lovely food, as always. Really like the non alcoholic cocktails too.
Very convenient location. Parking was easy. Food was delicious.
Terrific menu, great wine, amazing food. Expensive but the best things always are
