Amazing Sunday roast dinner & was very pleased by the service & cleanliness of the pub. The place is stunning & feels like your miles from it all which is just what’s needed right now.
Best local pub food experienced since lockdown. Great menu, well cooked; plus friendly, prompt service
Lovely meal but main took a long while to come- unusual as we have eaten here twice before.
Michael (Mikel) was lovely and very attentive, great service and great food and cocktails.
Simply very good. Great fish and chips served by polite, friendly staff. Proper Covid caution too. Thank you Black Swan.
Due to the fact that’s this pub is in Tiers 2. The staffs did everything to look after us , we had to sit outside due to two bubbles ! Great food
We were all asked to give our phone details not to the NHS app but for the restaurants own database. Only then were we allowed to be seated outdoors. I had requested a table on the verandah but was shown a very windy table. We eventually were given a table on the sunny side out of the wind. We were handed incorrect menus from their Sunday lunch as well as their lunch menus. Once ordered the food came quickly (hardly anyone there) and was good.
The service charge of 12.5% was a bit steep given our experience. It’s just a pub!!!
Doubt we will return even though we are fairly local. It’s just a money-making machine.
Unusual circumstances as start of level 2 lock down
Fantastic personal service! Food was delicious. Although we could do with a view more options on the children’s menu, please.
Food and service was absolutely brilliant. Best Sunday roast I’ve had out in a long time.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Was busy but all safety precautions in place and tables were placed well apart.
Food was tasty and well cooked using fresh ingredients but was disappointed at menu choice. I'm allergic to shellfish/crustaceans and don't eat red meat. I have also recently discovered an intolerance to gluten that is health-related so need to avoid wheat products.
Basically there was only 1 menu item I could have: roast chicken - and that was without the Yorkshire pudding and stuffing. The majority of side items (that I didn't already have as part of my meal) contained gluten and the only dessert option was ice-cream. If I was vegetarian and gluten-free then I wouldn't have been able to eat anything.
So ... lovely pub but won't be going back for a meal until they expand their menu a bit more.
Excellent food and service if a little pricey.
Surprising good meal - excellent soft shell crab and unusually good rib-eye steak. Excellent and friendly service
Not quite as special as we remembered but still a good meal out. Soggy burger bun replaced with no question. Mayonnaise was not good - straight out of cash and carry jar! But these were small details. Service was very diligent and timely. We will go back for sure.
Great food and wonderful service from our waitress, Joanne.
We'll definitely be going back.
Lovely countryside pub with great local walks. Had the fish and chips, and it was delicious, as well as the cheesecake for dessert which was as delightful. The ambience is very chilled and welcoming and the decor is beautiful
Lovely setting and great food
I just want to say that your staff were excellent. In these difficult times we received excellent, courteous, friendly and attentive attention!!!
We felt safe too.
We enjoyed a lovely lunchtime meal outside. All the staff we engaged with were friendly & helpful. Lovely environment too. Will be returning soon.
A large pub with good parking facilities. The service was excellent and the food was lovely. I would certainly visit again. We were seated inside near the bar, however there is plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating.
Lovely dinner and drinks with friends. We had the Chicken, ham and leek pie which was a good size and very tasty.
The food wasn’t great but not awful in the summer we had wonderful delicious food and felt great value not so this time
A reliable favourite, great menu, good size portions - very helpful staff.
Slow to serve and couldn't find someone to give us the bill.....staff busy chatting.
Came for a birthday meal but very disappointing and can’t help but feel this restaurant has lost its way from a food, ambience and service perspective. The Sunday menu selection was really poor. Starters seemed to be from a completely different menu theme (soft shell crab with kimchi and avocado) compared to mains (standard roasts, burger or fish and chips). The roasts were ok albeit that the Yorkshire’s were dry and had been kept warm for hours and the presentation was poor, burger also ok but patty’s were dry. Fish however was good - a well sized portion and seemingly freshish still. However the thing that massively ruined the experience was the smell inside the restaurant. Something was wrong with the drains in the toilets and the smell inside the restaurant was appalling. They’d left the doors open to try and get rid of it but it was too cold so they were forced to close them. But no apology or mention from the volumes of waiting staff who were sitting around chatting or playing jousting games with cardboard tubes. Just a casual mention at the end of ‘oh yes there’s a problem with the drains’ as we left. In all honesty the restaurant should not have been open with a problem like that.
First visit -mid pm Sunday lunch- at recommendation of relative who had been a while ago. Very busy but plenty of room. Excellent ' greeting-host', explained Covid safeguards - offered good inside table in a window and not disappointed; great service, excellent food, good value.
Venue is not local to home but would certainly make a point of visiting again. lovely experience - thank you.
I had stopped coming to the black swan after a very bad experience but what a turn around staff could have done more food was excellent and as we got the bay window we were just delight to be able to bring my well behaved dog inside was a big bonus thank you for a lovely lunch
Given we live in interesting times the team have made the dining experience as close to the old normal as possible.
The Black Swan at Ockham has historically been a good venue for both drinks-only and for a decent food offering hence my decision to book for dinner. Obviously, all hospitality venues now have to demonstrate effective COVID procedures and The Black Swan did show that it was very compliant in providing a safe environment for eating and drinking. However, my experience beyond seeing how they were managing the COVID requirements was extremely disappointing. Despite having a reservation for dinner, the initial table we were offered was a very small low level drinks table which would barely have been possible to use for eating. Given our rejection of this we were then shown to a table in a cavernous area of the pub next to an exit door which was in continuous use. The area had only one other occupied table and had an atmosphere equivalent to a deserted church hall with a low temperature to match. As a result, my wife and I chose to go straight to a main course and both chose the pie option which seemed suitable for an autumn evening meal. Unfortunately, the pie was heavy on pastry and light on the chicken and ham filling, with my wife's pie also including a large globule of ham fat. Hence we chose to ask for the bill and left. I should say that the waitress serving our table did the very best she could and was extremely personable as well as being concerned that our dining experience had been so disappointing. We will not be going back.
A little confusion over QR scanning codes - made to feel awkward as we didn't have i-phones.
Staff serving our table were just the right level of friendly & attentive.
Some of our party felt the portion sizes a little on the mean side (more veggies please!), based on the prices. All thought their meal was tasty.
We concluded that the prices were a reflection of businesses needing to recoup losses due to Covid-19.
Lovely pub in quiet location. Food nice but reasonably expensive.
Country Pub with outstanding Grub!
The soft shell crab is a must for starters and the fish and chips was really good with lovely juicy flakes of Haddock.
My one disappointment was they had run out of clotted cream for the choc pud which was divine!!
Can’ wait to return !!
We love this pub/restaurant, but this time we ate early and it was quiet and we were placed by a door that people used often, so it got a bit chilly.
Covid somewhat spoils the experience however managed well by staff. Food very good and large portions..will go back
Jo, our server, was superb!!
Super food, first class service. All round a great place to eat!
We tried the pub on the recommendation of the nearby campsite at Horsley, and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. It was busy and had a nice buzz about it- felt like a normal pub lunch experience on these strange times. Duncan our waiter was great , the Steepdrop beer well kept, with a scenic walk there and back to the campsite . I’m sure we’ll revisit if we are in the area again
This is a reliably excellent pub restaurant who are taking Covid precautions seriously and still managing to give diners a warm welcome and a great experience. I keep returning here.
I have never had a bad meal at the Black Swan, I look forwards to going back, hopefully when all this madness is over.
Amazing Sunday roast dinners, food came out super fast. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive.
