My husband and I visited The Boathouse for lunch. We live locally but had not been here. The location, overlooking the Solent and next to Puckpool Park, is ideal. The staff are lovely and the food good quality and reasonably priced.
We enjoyed our visit and the staff were very pleasant.
The pub is nicely decorated and has small cosy rooms. On arrival we had a warm welcome by bar staff and shown to our table. On ordering the waitress took our order wrong, so when the food came out it was incorrect, we did not complain as it was a special occasion. The food was okay, portion size is small and on the expensive side. There are better pubs within the area.
We arrived for a birthday celebration and were told that a couple of dishes off the standard menu were not available, so all that was left was sausage and mash, burgers etc, and we don't eat this food at home. We were also told there was no chicken - what chicken? as there was none on the menu. What I presume was the specials board had 'happy christmas' on it. We drank our drinks and left - there are so many more places to eat we will NOT be making a return journey and I would most definitely not recommend, and put it down to a bad experience.
Had the Christmas meal, great food and excellent value
Great Value, Great Food, Great Evening will go again shortly!!
Great location, good food and friendly service - all you need for a Sunday lunch with friends. Good menu options for both vegan and meat eating friends.
A lovely Inn, clean and smart appearance, excellent menu and options and really good food. Definitely one to revisit.
The food was great but the pudding portion was awful. Barely 2 mouthfuls. Staff were busy as it was half term but attentive
Overall good value for money
Everything is bee clean, however table top was very sticky from too much polish!
Not as good as we'd remembered unfortunately. My mother's slow cooked pork belly was very tough, and when she very politely mentioned it the server immediately offered to take it off the bill. However when my father came to pay, it hadn't been taken off, and he was too embarrassed to say anything. My father's sea bream was very nice, but for the price we would have expected it to come with some vegetables rather than just being fish on fancy mash. Also, my partner's sticky toffee pudding was too deconstructed! It was essentially a piece of sponge on a plate with a separate pot of sauce, so was rather dry and not what he was expecting. That said, I personally enjoyed the crab risotto, and the staff were generally polite and friendly. I'm not sure we'd go back though, having remembered it as being somewhere to go for a bit of a treat.
Great Food and ambience, good menu selection with specials of the day
Fab pub on the waterfront with a nice oputdoor terrace aswell as several rooms indoors.
Menu is attractive to the eye and the palatte.
Service with a smile.
We had a fantastic meal here last year and were excited to return but felt that, though the prices stayed the same, the quality was decidedly average by comparison. The sea bass in particular was disappointing, although the other dishes (sausage and mash, ham,egg and chips, steak) were fine.
We have been very enthusiastic diners at The Boathouse over the last 2 years and never been disappointed until now. We had friends from the mainland visiting for my birthday and treating us to dinner at a favourite venue of our choice. As they were paying it was difficult and embarrassing to make a fuss without spoiling their evening.
Service was incredibly slow and having booked for 6.30 we didn’t leave until after 10.00pm. Our starters were fine and arrived in reasonable time but after that timing fell apart. Our mains then took over an hour to appear, after the table next to us who had arrived later. We had to ask if we’d been forgotten and only then was it mentioned that one chef hadn’t turned up. When we eventually left I suggested it would have been helpful to know this earlier but apparently chef had said he could cope.
Three of us had the lamb neck main course, which was very measly and disappointing for the price. A very small portion of potatoes, broccoli and mange tout accompanied two very small lamb chops, definitely not up to the usual standard and very poor value for money.
We feel very disappointed and let down by this experience and wonder if we should look to eat elsewhere.
The 2 lady waitresses were very friendly and pleasant, this isn’t a complaint about them.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Thank you.
Wonderful friendly staff and lovely food, great location too!
Ate at The Boathouse with friends before visiting the Ryde Illuminated Carnival. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful and the food was very tasty and the portions were substantial. We had requested a sea view table and they had managed to find us one despite it being a late booking. The view out to sea is fascinating with a huge variety of boats going past, from giant cruise ships to small sailing boats, which made for an entertaining evening.
I had hesitated about choosing this restaurant after reading some earlier reviews but am so glad I did.
The boathouse offers good food in a picturesque location with plenty of free parking- try it.
Not a great selection. Food was okay but nothing special. Overall very disappointed especially having chosen this restaurant over another and after travelling 50 minutes to get there. Table felt sticky, needed a clean. Staff were very friendly though, service in general was good.
Lovely food, professional and polite staff, wide choice of beverages and the bar staff were knowledgable
Restaurant was ok, same as normal nothing overly special. Food was ok, service was ok, not enough staff. It could be such a stunning eatery if they just tried a little harder.
A good dining experience. Fresh fish menu, meats good quality. Puddings very good. Can get busy so service can be slowed down. Nice ambience right by the sea.
Food was very good but service was shambolic, service was very slow and they didn't seem to have any managerial leadership
We had a lovely evening at The Boat House. We had our 2 children with us, aged 3 years and 6 months and the staff were great with them and were very accommodating. It was lovely to go out to eat somewhere 'posh' with the children and not worry that they were unwelcome. We had a beautiful meal; all the food was cooked to perfection and there was a lot of choice on the menu. We look forward to visiting again on our holidays next year! Thank you very much.
Very nice as always but the lamb was a bit small and quite fatty
A great location by the beach. Friendly quick service and good food
I visit the Island regularly and this is one of my favourite places to eat, however, on this occasion it was a little below the normal excellent service. Apparently it had been very busy all day with the overspill from the Isle of Wight festival, and the glorious weather so by the time we arrived for our booking at 8pm there was quite a list of foods that were sold out!! this was disappointing, but we were given an apology as soon as we arrived with an explaination as to why. We decided to go ahead and were shown to our table with the menu and told someone would be with us shortly, but then had to wait for quite a long time (about 40 mins) before our order was taken, only to be told we should have ordered at the bar!!
Once we got our meals, they were lovely, albeit a bit late.
Have eaten at The Boathouse on a few occasions and the food has always been good. This was a bit of a last minute booking as my boys wanted to watch the England match. The ladies in the bar were very helpful and moved us from our booked table to one nearer the TV! The lobster salad was divine, gin choice good and the weather made the whole experience a very nice way to spend the afternoon.
Very disappointing from start to finish.
Firstly the drinks we asked for were unavailable, no cherry sours, sweet cider or craft beer.
Only a few items on menu that we liked, waited ages for someone to take our order n then after choosing chicken we were told they had run out. I appreciate places do sell out of items but most of the time you are told that initially.
Food was very greasy and bland.
Tried a lemon tart for just under £6, to say it was bite size, tasteless and soggy would be an understatement.
The noise echoed around and the door being slammed constantly didn't help either.
Along with hearing the staff shouting in the kitchen.
Not my idea of a good time.
I have visited the Boathouse many times. This Fathers Day the quality of food was not great and was actually quite disappointing.
A very good experience. The booking system was very easy to use via the website. The service was fantastic - very friendly welcoming staff (this wasn't expwcted as I have had a negative expereince there in the past concerning staff). The two mwmbers of staff that served our table were very engaging, especially with my 12 year old son which was great. Food was exceptional.. our friends who were with us for the weekend were amazed by how prompt pur meals were served. I was glad to have my opinion changed of The Boathouse and will happily return.
Service was ok. Vegetables were reheated and brown and old
A bit disappointing that not everything on the menu was available but it was a busy bank holiday weekend.
Starters good. My main course good. My wife’s main course (pork belly) was very tough and over cooked. She complained . She left it. No one was interested. On the basis of that I would not eat there again or recommend the place.
The food was superb, the venue was being used as a friend reunion so not much attention was made of the surroundings beyond being pleasant and comfortable but the service was excellent with just the right degree of attention. I cannot comment on alcoholic range (beer or wine) as we didn't indulge. Would not hesitate to return either on my own or with friends.
Staff very friendly food amazing value 2 for 1 deal ! We will definately be back now we have a loyalty card with such good offers
The Boat House is a lovely pub/restaurant. We made the wrong choice of food this time and the fish was dry and overcooked but also far too much of it. The few mussels that came with the dish were delicious as was the tablespoon of sauce that came with it. Less fish, less time cooking and a little more sauce and it would have been great.
It came with (what appeared to be microwaved) cauliflower, broccoli and school type thickly sliced rock hard carrots. All were undercooked - and I like lightly cooked veg. Hopeless with the fish dish - even a few frozen peas would have been much nicer.
Wine was fine and service, as always, friendly. We will, of course, come again but, as in the past, we suspect it's best to stick with burgers or something similar. Nice atmosphere and great place in the summer as right next to the sea.
4 of us (plus a dog) visited for Saturday lunch and both the food and the service was excellent. I would definitely recommend. I made the booking on the Saturday morning so half expected it not to have been received, but when we arrived the table was ready and in the 'dog friendly' part of the pub as requested - very impressed.
A warm welcome on a cold February night! A lovely meal served by attentive, informed and friendly staff
Used the prebook special offer and it was fabulous. Everybody very welcoming and helpful. Will definitely eat here again soon.
We took advantage of the 3 course evening meal for £19.95 - buy one get one free with a bottle of wine for £9.95. Food and service were awesome as usual.
