The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Wonderful food and great service. This is top notch pub grub!
Great food, plenty of it, cracking service.
We shared the cauliflower with curry mayonnaise (so delicious) and the croquettes (Lancashire cheese I believe - the best!) to start then had mushrooms on toast (could have had more tarragon in the butter but that’s maybe just me as my other half didn’t agree) and he had the black pudding - delicious! Pickled red cabbage on the side which had us trying to work out the secret ingredient (...!). Then we shared a cheese board which I couldn’t have managed on my own! Really good beers.
Roundly (!) recommend 😊
Busy and popular, food was very good and innovative . One small criticism the onion rings were desperately over salted service was excellent and excellent value for money. Place was busy early Friday even.
Been to Broad Chare a few times and each time we have had fantastic food and excellent service. Definately one of our favourites....
We all ate fish dishes which were excellent. Obviously cooked to order as our meal took quite a long time to be served.
Excellent beer ‘downstairs’ and a great atmosphere.
Really great roasts- both lamb and beef. Only disappointment was fried cod cheeks which must have been cooked next to something really cheesy as it over powered them. Great service and ambience
Food and service could not have been better. Well done to the team esp Nicola. Haggis was exceptional
Yes I would definitely recommend. However, if you’re going book in advance at an early time. We ate at 5pm on a Sunday which was towards the end of service. As a result there was limited roasts available, beef or vegetarian.
There are alternatives but if you want a roast specifically, be warned.
Good food, great service, will definitely go again when I can.
Top grub and top service as always. Can’t really go wrong at the Broad Chare.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere with stunning food. Could not fault the service.
I can not rate the Broad Chare highly enough. The staff are amazing the food is delicious and the chef is second to none. I am on an auto immune diet and they could not have known and done more for me. When we got the bill I nearly fell off my chair as it is really good value for money. I absolutely love the place and wish Terry Laybourne would open something in our home town of Cambridge!
We went for Sunday lunch the beef was really good- served pink it was very tender. We would defiantly recommend x
Lovely food, excellent value, good service. Never disappoints.
Maintains a high standard so return time and time again
Great food and great service as always
One of the best places to eat in Newcastle and the North East
Arriving late due to traffic: no problem. We needed to leave to go to the Sage, the staff were brilliant in enabling us to have a lovely meal in super quick time. Lovely cool wine, friendly staff, excellent food in a convivial environment.
Excellent food - we all really enjoyed our meals. Good service too
Pleasant atmosphere and reasonable food.
However my potatoes didn’t come with my main course and I had to ask for them. I’d started eating before they arrived as the delay meant the fish would’ve been cold had I waited.
Fantastic Sunday dinner, highly recommended
Great food, Sunday lunch was very good, not a lot of veg but the overall meal was good. Service a bit slow, we waited 45 minutes for our meal. Restaurant was very noisy, there was a large group of people at one end of the room who were noisy.
A catch up in Newcastle with old friends. The food and the service was very good - positive feedback from everyone in the party. Had the Sat special - chicken and leek pie which was tremendous.
Good quality food with excellent friendly service. We called as we were running late and our table was held for us.
The food was lovely and the service even better. The chefs were kind enough to change a main for me a little bit so that it didn't contain meat which was fantastic. The servers were really friendly and really understood their menu.
We went with our parents to celebrate getting married and it was the perfect setting, we will definitely all be going again.
Also the Malbec is spot on.
Steak was terrible everything else was lovely was disappointed

All our visits here have been successful ever since opening. Food and service is always good and reliable and the atmosphere good even though this time it was a not very busy lunchtime. This contradicted your website the night before when I was booking and it said there were so few tables available I had 4 minutes in which to make a booking. The only change I would like to see at Broad Chare is the introduction of a fixed price lunch menu as at Cafe 21 and other good restaurants. this would offer a much better value alternative.
Book it! That’s my advice. Love the food sand service is exceptional
First time at the Broad Chare, it will not be the last time. The staff were polite and helpful, table was available earlier than booked, food was served hot and everything tasted fantastic. Will be letting family and friends know about this place.
Very good Sunday lunch again at the Broad Chare. First class as always. Service excellent and food very good. Staff always looks after us and a regular venue for us now.
Great steaks and seafood but the chunky chips were bought in rather than fresh/home made which is pretty disappointing. At this price point I don't expect to be eating frozen chips.
Had a lovely evening at the Broad Chare. Food was flavour some, arrived quickly and presented well. The service was great really attentive but not in your face! The atmosphere was busy and happy. It’s a comfortable pub/restaurant. Couldn’t fault anything! Would highly recommend
Great food fab service
Second visit and it didn’t disappoint- bar snack were superb especially the monkfish cheeks - herb crusted hake was outstanding
I would definitely recommend Sunday lunch. Once of the best I’ve had. Service and ambiance were excellent. Can’t wait to come back.
Really great place. Great food, great service, great atmosphere - great value!
Great British food in a gastro pub with great atmosphere - really good friendly service, interesting menu and food was just fantastic. Proper pub downstairs too for a drink before or after!
The best of Newcastle - and the best of British!
Lovely as always. Excellent food, great service and a lovely atmosphere.
Happy Helpful Staff.
Wine was Amazing.
Favourite of the Evening=Curried Mayo - sublime.
Friendly staff and lovely food! Absolutely wonderful and made our evening.
