The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

As always The Broad Chare doesn’t fail to impress. Great food and attentive staff who always have a smile on their faces. The wine list is good, and it still hasn’t lost its traditional feel.
Another great meal with attentive and friendly service. Roast cod was excellent.
Fab Sunday lunch, we brought friends for the first time and they were really pleased with our recommendation
Table booked for 17.45 and we were allowed to sit there a bit earlier which was nice of them. The atmosphere and service was very pleasant and food very good except a bowl of greens as an extra side dish was very small and just curly cabbage! By the time we had finished at 7.30 it was full and so noisy we couldn't carry on our conversation so were glad to be leaving.
Great food and choice. Well looked after by Staff. Great ambience and real buzz around the restaurant. Never disappointed - will be back again. Car parking at the local multi storey is free at night so added bonus. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Great place... great staff
Lovely tasty food again. Not quite sure what vegetables were included with some dishes. Pleasant staff and atmosphere during a fairly quiet lunch time catch up with old friends.
mackerel dish from the specials was particularly tasty.
We have eaten at several of Mr Layburns restaurants and whilst they have always been good , I have noticed the food and service has recently dropped from its usual very high quality.
The exception being Saltwater Fish which is always exceptional
Excellent, good, honest British food
Best in Newcastle
A perfectly acceptable gastro pub which is in a great location on The Quayside
Excellent food. Friendly and efficient staff. Great place.
Waiter very friendly.food and service very good. Good value. Relaxed atmosphere.
An amazing Sunday lunch would highly recommended this place!
The latest of our visits to restaurants detailed in Relish North East and certainly lived up to the recommendation. Great location and lively atmosphere. All food was fresh and obviously locally sourced, the portions substantial. The staff were attentive, helpful and well informed. We loved the whole experience and will definitely be returning soon. Thanks to the head chef for signing a menu.
Really good atmosphere and great value for money. Very imaginative menu.
We had a fantastic meal. We went for the 1kg sirloin steak option which was a sharing plate. There was plenty for two big appetites. Fabulous.
Food was fine ,service was good but was upset that we paid for steamed greens even though there were greens included in the meal . I am not a great fan of service charge included, I always like to choose the amount I pay. I know you can do that but it’s not the same . Nice pub, just a few little things that were not quite right. We will be going again now we know these little problems we can work around them .
First visit for food. Some items not available and although the starters were fantastic I, the steak was over cooked for the mail. Was fine, would return but I’d heard better things so slightly deflating. ..... oh, if you love a Michael Buble Christmas song, this is the place to be 🙈😬
Great food and friendly, accommodating service combined perfectly for a great Sunday lunch. Our favourite.
As you can see . An excellent meal n experience. Only small problem was my wife’s bday was on the day we visited n I asked if they had a small cake which I would pay for they said so sorry but Tesco sell them . I went across to Tesco n bought a bday cake n you were good enough to cut it up but no offer of cream. Only telling you this as everything else was amazing .
Good selection of dishes, food of an excellent quality and good service with pleasant surroundings.
Really lovely night
Food was excellent
Great buz in this go to pub restaurant.
5 of us shared the 7hour slow cooked lamb...wow! Absolutely great choice served with Boulanger potatoes and lots of veg. We all loved it.
Great food, monk cheeks and scotch egg are delicious. Christmas Game Pie totally recommend too!
Called as a party of two couples
I started with the French Onion soup
It was a little watery for my taste
Then I had the rib eye steak it was cooked to my taste medium rare washed down with the Malbec
I had a coffee to finish
The resturant was a little noisey a table of four girls next to us sharing secret Santa gifts (your forgiven)
The service was good smiley staff happy to please
Will be back even for a pint of St Mungo down in the bar
We had a lovely evening. Would return again if in town
Visit for our wedding anniversary using a Gift Voucher from family. Service was very good throughout our visit. Food for him and her was excellent and beautifully presented. Noise levels occasionally were too high for the writer who wears aids, due to the number of diners and large parties.
Went for supper on a busy Friday night. The setting is pleasant with a view out to the quayside. Crab pate on toast to share. Quite pricey at £9. My partner had roast turkey which was enjoyed. I opted for the plaice. Bad mistake. The most boney fish i have ever had. Had to constantly pick the bones out of my mouth. The waiter asked if i would like the chef to remove them. When returned the fish had still really big bones. I asked them to take it away as it was disgusting. Quite rightly i wasnt charged for it
Good food. Nice surroundings and very helpful staff.
Staff welcoming and friendly. Good choices on menu. Wide variation of drinks available. Food served in reasonable time after ordering. Presentation good and food tasty to eat. Wait staff attentive but not intrusive.
Good range of fresh seafood dishes. Portions are a decent size. Waiting staff are friendly and informative about the menu.
What a wonderful find!! From start to finish we were looked after so well by the staff. Such a good choice of food, we loved the mackerel pate, everything was perfect. Big thanks to all.
Amazing food. Service was bad. Took 15 mins to get anyones attention for the bill and then 10 mins to pay. 1st course took 50 mins. Waiting staff need to up their game.
Food was good rather than outstanding. One starter served without its sauce so not a great start. Otherwise all ok
Food, atmosphere and service was great. The staff were very accommodating with our food orders and it was the perfect place for a graduation celebration. Cozy, comfortable and delicious food.
Great meal again. Lovely staff who couldn’t be more attentive. Best place in Newcastle for Sunday lunch and at any other time of the day.
Great food, great service
Had a wonderful night. Steak was cooked to perfection, well done that chef!
I would just like to thank all the staff for our visit to the restaurant yesterday. It was my Mothers 70th birthday and I could not fault the service and attention shown to us throughout our meal. I had asked the restaurant to make a cake (carrot being her favourite), they did not disappoint an absolutely outstanding end to what was already a memorable meal.
You have made her weekend!
As always it is my first choice when on the Quayside and always highly recommend you to family and friends!
Didn’t order a starter as we all were having main course and dessert. Waited a long time for food to arrive. This has happened before in Cafe 21 which is owned by the same owner. Then we were told it was because we didn’t order a starter! Doesn’t make sense. Anyway the food was delicious and enjoyed by all. Chicken pie with either chips and vegetables and cod. Staff very good. Have never had a poor meal here. 10%service charge always added to your bill here.
