The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Very noisy upstairs dining - wooden floor made it noisier. Disabled access impossible for upstairs dining.
First visit for several years but all aspects lived up to my expectations of friendly helpful, knowledgeable staff, excellent beer and food. Nice atmosphere overall
We enjoyed our dinner the choices were inventive and we weren't disappointed. The food was delicious and arrived nice and hot on the plates so we knew it hadn't be sat waiting to be served. The service was perfect not in your face but there when you needed it. The place was really busy but we didn't have to shout to have conversations. We booked well in advance as it's a real popular place and we strongly suggest you do too.
The pigs heads is worth a try it was really nice, we had some items off the specials board and if the partridge is available we would certainly recommend it.
We had a lovely evening, would definitely go again 😊
Had the rump steak for two. It was monumental. Range of bar snacks to share for the starters is ideal. Everything was just great. Make sure you’re hungry.
We had a party of 10 and the restaurant very kindly put 2 tables together at short notice for us. They were so helpful. Great food catering for a variety of food tastes and dietary requirements. Much enjoyed.
Great location just off the Quayside. The downstairs bar makes for a great pre-dinner drink, whilst the ambience / lighting / decor of upstairs sets the scene nicely for the remainder of the evening. Service is friendly and good. - definitely worth the 10% service charge. Menu is not over elaborate and falls back on good traditional dishes together with wonderful daily specials. The hake was was wonderful and the sides were great value. The wine selection at the top end (Sainsbury Chardonnay, Hunters Sauvignon Blanc) are classy but paying £37 or £52 a bottle on a weekday is over extravagant. Free water helped. The wine list was a limited and personally unappealing in the £20-£25 section. I always dine here when I visit Newcastle - consistent, good value and great food.
Loving the Oktoberfest menu right now, enjoy it while you can!
Enjoyed the restaurant, food and service excellent , would definitely go back again
Casual, friendly and excellent food. Perfect Gastropub
Good North East food, plenty of fish dishes, ham and pease pudding and an excellent range of beers and wines. Characterful place, makes the chain type bars look rather insipid.
Another great meal at my favourite place. Took advantage of their Oktoberfest menu and went for the roast pork, red cabbage and dumplings which were delicious. Also managed to drink them out of Timothy Taylors beer which was always a result. Bar snacks legendary as always!
Great and interesting menus - food, beer, wine and spirits.
As always, great food at a Terry Leybourne establishment. Great menu with each offering a difficult choice.
Great food & good banter with the staff
We have been to The Broad Chare before and generally like it. It has a good reputation among our friends, too. This time we went for the German Octoberfest Specials and were disappointed by the food. We had Matjes as a starter, which tasted more like Bismarck herring (sour). My wife then had the Schweinebraten (pork roast) with red cabbage, which was good. I had the bratwurst with sauerkraut – the bratwurst was ok, but the sauerkraut was not sour at all. For desert I had an Apfelstrudel, which was really good. My wife had a Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, which turned out to be some other type of cake which happened to have cherries in, but it was certainly not an original Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Service was not overly friendly, either.
So, to conclude, while we would still recommend the place, we were underwhelmed by the Octoberfest special menu.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Broad Chare, staff were helpful and friendly, the food was fantastic, we shared the rump steak which was cooked beautifully. Overall a lovely relaxed atmosphere, we’ll definitely return
Greatly enjoyed relaxed atmosphere and wonderful food. Would confidently recommend.
Arrived at the broad chare and a member of staff asked us to move to let her pass on the stairs, we were not acknowledged as customers and stood waiting at an awkward place next to the till, stairs and kitchen entrance/exit. We were eventually greeted and were asked to choose between 3 tables and seated. I ordered the steak and kidney pudding which was delicious but contained only one chunk of kidney (plenty of steak though which was great!) my partner chose the burger which was substandard with what seemed like oven chips that were so overlooked they contained little to no potato and a side of greasy onion rings that were dripping in oil. We did have a table check at the beginning of the meal before we had a chance to really tuck in to the food so at the time we did say everything was fine. At the end of the meal my partner told the waitress about the onion rings and chips, the onion rings were deducted from the bill and my partner was told his dessert would be complementary. I ordered the selection of cheese for dessert, this was 4 cheeses that weren’t explained as to which one was which once they arrived at the table, there was half an apple, chutney and Jacobs crackers served alongside. I was so shocked that these were Jacobs crackers at £12 I would have expected something different to the type of cheese board I would have at home. My partner had the sundae which he said was lovely. The atmosphere is great, nice and lively place full of sound. The staff were below par considering there’s a 10% service charge added to the bill however we were running late to our reservation so we rang prior to let them know and the gent on the phone was helpful and moved the reservation back 15mins. We were really looking forward to going after hearing good things which has left us very disappointed and we wouldn’t return again
Early evening dinner with some colleagues and a visitor from Korea. Everyone enjoyed the traditional food. Service as always was great.
Booked at the last minute to try Sunday lunch - we all had a different meal and were all absolutely delighted with the food.
The beef was outstanding and the calves liver just delightful.
Service was perfect and the whole experience one which we will definitely repeat.
Thank you for a lovely experience
The food was exceptional although the menu was very limited.
Superb location, excellent food, friendly staff, a real treat following a terrible journey through wind and rain
The most beautifully cooked grouse I’ve ever had...charming, helpful staff, service exemplary.
Been meaning to go here for ages and wish we had sooner! Great service, great food, lovely place! We will be back! Highly recommended.
Great food and drink with a wide selection.
Would definitely return.
Lively and upbeat restaurant serving delicious food will definitely return.
Food was ok, but nothing special. Fish was a bit too salty. The steak was slightly chewy, the fried onion rings like for a fish and chips shop.
Visited the Broad Chare whilst up watching the Great North Run. Very good service lovely staff, great beer selection and food was first class. Mushroom on toast and haggis and duck egg on toast starters followed by the chargrilled rump steak for two which was simply outstanding!! Highly recommend and would travel up from Sheffield just to have that steak again. Top drawer stuff all round 👍
We had family coming to stay and had previously had a great experience here so booked a table for four on a Friday evening at 7.
When we arrived there was no one to greet us or show us to our table. In the end we flagged down a waitress walking past. The restaurant was incredibly hot, unbearable even, and we asked for a window to be opened which was then closed less than a minute later.
Despite this all four of us were excited to try the fish and chips as that was the speciality of the day. We were then incredibly disappointed to find out that the fish was sold out. Surely when planning a specials day and looking at bookings there would be enough stock to last later then 7pm!
The waitress was lovely and very apologetic but overall it was a very poor experience. Definitely not in a hurry to return.
Great food, excellent service, traditional setting. Perfect!
I've been in New Castle for a week, and visiting The Broad Chare was absolutely the best experience.
Wonderful food and beer.
Sunday lunch very good. Slow roast shoulder of lamb so tender it fell apart. Roast beef also good. Would definitely return for Sunday lunch. Only criticism mint sauce was out of a jar. No comparison to fresh mint sauce.
Food was good - however, evening ruined by rowdy drunken group of middle aged men. I mentioned it to the staff who agreed they were noisy but they didn’t ask the group to be a little more considerate.
Meal for 3 £100 - wasted.
Another faultless meal, outstanding food combined with exceptional staff. I have been coming to the Broad Chare for years and this is my first review. I have recommended the restaurant to so many and I always keep coming back. If you haven’t been pop in for a pint and try the bar snacks! Then like we did book a table upstairs and try the 1kg rump steak for 2.... outstanding Five Stars!!
Excellent food and good service in small vibrant restaurant and bar
Favourite resturant in Newcastle..
Rib eye steak worth the 160 mile journey
Great food & drink, very good sevice & to top that a window seat, we will be back.
The food was delicious, service was very good I would definitely eat here again
Great location. Great building. Retro food. Wine list could have a greater choice of , good value, cheaper wines. The artisan, local food is a good u.s.p. I will probably go to Broad Chare, whenever I stay in Newcastle, and recommend it to friends.
