Argh all our food came out within 20 minutes. Thats nibbles, starter and main meal. I couldnt digest it fast enough, so didnt eat all my main. Very dissapointed. Complained to manager who said that he has requested the kitchen to slow down. A bit late for us though! I had the potted squiral for starter and that was lovely. Then hanker steak for main but although i couldnt finish it, it was lovely. Couldnt fault the food, it was really tasty and cooked to perfection. But really could have done with more time between the meals.
Im really dissapointed by the service and it ruin our night, as we had hoped that we could spend more time at the chop house, but were finished within 25minutes of arriving. And £70 down. Its quite expensive to dine there so was a treat for me and my hubby.
My wife and I (from Hove) celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at the restaurant with friends from Edinburgh. Our welcome, service and overall experience throughout the evening was excellent. The food was interesting, varied and equal to the service we received. Definitely a restaurant we would visit again - and recommend to all friends & family.
Great food and service, lovely ambience. Handled a garlic allergy well, waitress helpful and knowledgeable about menu.
Great food and service. The best ambiance is found down stairs, with many step up and down moments to get around so not best for those with disabilities. Much of the charm of the place is in the nooks and crannies and so doesn't lend its self to buggies or very large groups of people - max comfortable seating is probably 6. But it is a really lovely place - with a great deal of character, somewhere you can disappear into for a while with some good seasonal food.
Great service and food in a very central location.
Cambridge institution booked for a graduation celebration. Welcome was great, a lovely smiley man behind the bar.
Service downstairs was a little slow but acceptable - better than being rushed.
We would have liked to have been shown the choice of cuts as we saw a table being shown later in the evening but for whatever reason our waitress did not do this.
Ambience was comfortable, and relaxed. Staff were professional, polite, attentive and seemed very genuine - neither overly familiar or detached (which I find is often the case in other restaurants)
Potato and leek soup was enjoyed by all who ordered, steak and chips with various butters very tasty and good value on pre-theatre fix price menu. Beef Wellington was very nice with lovely rich gravy but not worth double the price of the steak at £28. Sharing platter tasty and enjoyed by a very proficient home cook.
Only complaint was a lack of blinds to block out blinding sunlight that caused us to move table halfway through the meal.
Excellent quality simple British food.
Staff are exceptional and ambience lovely.
We will be back.
Excellent steak house with really good service!
Me and my partner went for a celebratory graduation dinner and the food did not disappoint. The staff were extremely attentive and provided helpful food recommendations. The restaurant also has a pre-theatre set menu which is good value for money.
We had food from the ala carte menu - smoked mackerel pate for entree, butler steaks and a combination of the champagne sorbet and gooseberry and elderflower ice cream, all of which we highly recommend.
One star off for the extremely pricey sparkling wine which was fairly average. For the value of the sparkling wine, we would recommend a bottle of red wine or their house beers instead.
Disappointing overall. Good attention but only mediocre food to be honest. Was expecting much more. And the truffle mash was awful - they really need to have a look at the recipe and change it. Only worth the price of their pre/post-theater menu - wouldn't pay a penny more.
We've been twice to the cambridge chop house and both times we enjoyed the ambiance and loved the food. As we needed early bookings, we were able to take advantage of the early pre-theatre offer which is excellent value. The service was great, but we were not rushed. We will definitely come again.
We booked the Chop House for a pre-theatre dinner. The service was pleasant and timely and the food was of good quality and well cooked. I had the Butler steak, which was excellent.
Great location - downstairs table is best unless you particularly want the view of Kings. Great service from the waiting staff especially the guys who took our order and did a good job of describing the unusual cuts of steak. Also showed us raw examples on a board too!
Excellent food in a restaurant with a lovely ambiance. Staff very friendly and obliging
We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Cambridge Chop House. I had requested a quiet table and we sat upstairs by the window, which was perfect. The steak was truly great, cooked to perfection. The only tiny quibble with the meal was too much dressing on my salad - but I'm struggling to find anything to criticise.
Do leave room for puddings. Totally yummy!
I think downstairs is a more vibrant and noisy dining experience, but upstairs is just right for the over 60's!
The bread and oil with balsamic vingar were excellent to nibble on beofre our mains arrives.
We then both chose fish from the 'specials' menu; one halibut and one monkfish. Both were very well cooked, most tasty and served with interesting sides. Highly recommended.
We were going on to the theatre and let our waitress know that we had to finish our meal in good time and she ensured that we were served and had plenty of time for a leisurely coffee to end our meal.
Overall a very pleasing experience
Decor downstairs needs a bit of a revamp; unnecessary piped music; food and service excellent.
Lovely food, lovely service. Will visit again.
It was our 24th Wedding Anniversary and the food and service were first class, table was ready and it really was just a lovely lunch time meal, the Set menu was excellent value and great choice.
Excellent food and choice. Attentive service. Not the cheapest but it's worth the money.
If you're looking for great steaks, cooked well - go to the chop house!
First time visit but would definitely visit again. Good meal selection. Good ambience
A great buzzy atmosphere with very friendly attentive service. Food the last two occasions has been excellent and a worthy wine list to boot!uch improved from a couple of years ago!
I'm looking forward to my next trip!
Perfect for pre-theatre!
Sat in ground floor with great view of Kings College for Sunday lunch on a nice day. Good ribeye steak and chips, cooked very nicely, veggies ok, draught beer good, pleasant service. This place does what it says on the tin, plain food well cooked.
Great ambience downstairs with great service and great food.
THE TWO OF US HAD A VERY AGREEABLE DINNER BEFORE A NEAR BY CONCERT
WE ENJOYED SIRLOIN EACH JUST AS WE EXPECTED WITH A VERY TASTY WINE SAUSE
SERVICE WAS VERY GOOD AND PROMPT
Excellent service, good food, enjoyable evening, we had a thoroughly good time, our waitress Marcia was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble, we shall return
Brilliant steaks and peppercorn steaks cooked perfectly. This really was a great meal in every way.
We had the pre-theatre meal which was very good although the broccoli wasn't cooked adequately (beyond al-dente) but it was replaced with a properly cooked dish and they gave us our coffees for free as a "sorry". There was a birthday party in which was rather noisy making conversation difficult. The whole Cambs Cuisine Group provides consistently high quality dining.
We enjoyed the evening at yours tremendously. Food, service and atmosphere were all perfect. Both of us had the Sirloin which was an outstanding dish! Thanks!
Service was excellent, friendly, funny and efficient. We ordered some initial fillers, they were so good we ordered more, none of this was a problem, food was all served very promptly and the quality of the food was very good. We over ordered on sides, the waitress mentioned that this would probably be more than we needed as opposed to just taking our money. Overall everything was well thought out, well cooked and well presented. A very enjoyable meal.
we were 3 men who lunched at 3.00 on a saturday, The menu was well explained by the welcoming waitress. seating was comfortable, venue interesting with different eating areas / rooms. The gents lavatories were playing (through the audio system) an episode of Black Adder which made a visit to them entertaining.
Now the main event, the food :- the sharing platter to start with, which was excellent, smoked salmon, soused herring, pate, pork scratchings (which were amazing), croquettes of haggis, to name but some ! The main courses chosen were 1 Lamb steak and 2 Beef Steaks served with great chips, only one of the party able to eat all his steak as portions are very generous. These were very succulent and tender. unfortunately no room left for desserts.
This was our first visit and will definitely book again when next in Cambridge. soon I hope.
Lovely restaurant, food great & good value. All the staff were very welcoming and the service was excellent.
We usually eat here when we come to Cambridge as food is tasty, fresh and reasonably priced.
This time though I thought the cooking was a bit under par as my confit leg of duck was quite dry. The set menu had not changed since we were last there a few weeks ago and the copies we were given were rather dog-eared and spattered.
We had a very enjoyable meal, the service was good and it was not noisy. Two of the four of us are vegetarian so the choice was somewhat limited but what we did have was delicious.
Thought we would treat ourselves for our 20th wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. Superb food, excellent service in a fabulous setting
This was the perfect place for a small gathering of friends - The food is excellent. I have one of the best venison steaks ever and my friends were all impressed with the food and venue.
The menu boasted that the staff were trained by butchers and that the restaurant was proud of the provenance of their beef. When asked by a guest (who farms rare breed cattle) what breed the beef was the first waitress did not know. The manageress then arrived, she was rude, unpleasant, unhelpful and short with us. Quite frankly we got the impression she did not really know what she was talking about and we were a burden on her anyway! The food was average at best. Not in the same league as other steak restaurants. Really disappointed.
Lovely service and yummy food. We went for pre theatre menu and it was delicious, recommend the butler steak and house red!
A lovely relaxing ambience in this restaurant. Plenty of room between tables downstairs so didn't feel overheard. Deco is so oldie and lovely. Food superb - we ate from the set menu as I had eaten previously and wanted to try a different meal. House wine fab and quite reasonable.
