Sunday Lunch
The Chequers is a beautifully restored gastropub that serves high quality home cooked food, in a friendly pub atmosphere.

The menu compromises of refined, beautifully presented modern British fare, but The Chequers stays true to its roots by also offering a classics menu. The Sunday roast is legendary and won the Bath Good Food Award for best Sunday lunch in Bath. Add to that a great wine list and a selection of well kept local ciders and ales and you have The Chequers.

We're located just a short walk from some of Bath's most famous landmarks – the Circus and the Royal Crescent. So whether you live or work locally, or are a visitor to Bath, you're equally welcome and we look forward to seeing you.

I have never enjoyed goingboutvfir a roast dinner. Its normally frozen mass produced over cooked and no where nerves good as I can cook at home. Hands down the best roast I've ever eaten out. Beef sharing roast was superb

We booked through Opentable the day before we were due in Bath for my wife's birthday. The following evening on the journey into Bath I missed a call from the restaurant and they left a voicemail saying they couldn't honour the booking due to be very busy. I quickly called back and after explaining the situation they honoured the booking. On arrival it was busy with a loud xmas party next to us but after 20 minutes several tables around us became vacant and remained so for the rest of the night. The service was OK and they did eventually say we could move somewhere else to avoid the noise but by then we had been there a good hour or so and most of the food had been served.

Overall the food was good but not spectacular, my beef was tasty but a little dry and the terrine was nice but not all that different to pate from supermarkets. The service was adequate and the ambience was not quite what was expected from a pub advertising itself from being established in the 1700's. It doesn't have any period features and is indistinguishable from most modern gastro pubs.

The cancellation has left a sour taste, especially being notified over 24 hours later, less than 2 hours before we were due to eat. It means they took/ignored the booking without knowing the next evenings bookings or they overbook as standard. Either way it makes you feel undervalued and negates the point of sites like OpenTable. The experience overall was distinctly average bordering on poor, salvaged by the no fuss rebooking and the food. Maybe we just caught them at a bad time.

Very welcoming upscale gastro pub. Quiet day. Save for barking dogs on premises! They might want to re think that. Good value.

This was our second visit to the Chequers for Sunday roast and it was as almost good as before. Well-cooked and nicely presented food served by cheerful, friendly staff. Our only criticism this time is that the food was not as hot as it could have been - hotter gravy particularly would have been welcome - but perhaps this is just our personal preference.

my food was bad and the my friends' were medoicre. i ate a steak, which came cold and dry, very disappointing. also, the portion (not just the meat, but the chips too) was small, especially for a price tag of £24 (i had to eat a burger an hour later somewhere else). the restaurant seems to want to aspire to provide a "fine dining" experience (at least as far as the portions, presentation and the prices are concerned), but in my assessment the quality is nowhere near.

the downstairs area was very pleasant but unfortunately we were shown to the upstairs room. It was unpleasantly noisy and we ended up leaving rather than having a dessert.
The young man who served us was exceptionally good, friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The only other staff we had contact with seemed relatively surly and slightly offhand.
The food was delicious and reasonably priced but I would definitely recommend asking for a table downstairs.

This stands out as one of the best pub Sunday lunches we have ever enjoyed. Starting with champagne by the glass (not often available in pubs), excellent beer on tap and a delicious roast lunch we felt thoroughly indulged.

This is our local but if it wasn't we would make the journey to come here anyway. Great wine list, superb food, friendly service and excellent value for money. The food is always good - last time we had the Sunday roast and I can honestly say it's the best I've had anywhere. Hats off to the chef for managing the most crispy on the outside fluffy in the middle roast potatoes.

The food was excellent but the meal was spoilt by a cacophony of noise. Putting bathroom tiles on the walls means the noise bounces off them and it was unpleasant . Diners at other tables commented on this too.

Wonderful, relaxed, cosy venue. Staff were really warm and service was excellent. We loved the food - in particular the ham hock terrine and squid, venison casserole, lemon posset and treacle tart. A beautiful georgian gastropub, we loved our evening and will be back, thank you Chequers!

I had the pleasure of eating here for the first time on Sunday and it was fabulous. Our waitress (I think her name was Jasmine) was extremely friendly & attentive. The food was delicious. I had the roast beef (perfectly pink) and my partner has the pork and he said it was very tasty. I often find roast potatoes on roasts out not great but these were so crispy and fluffy inside. Also need to give a shout out to the sticky toffee pudding for dessert because it was one of the best i've ever had. Really recommend this place & we'll be back.

We had a lovely evening meal here on Saturday night. The venue is cosy and comfortable. The food was delicious, especially the devilled lamb kidneys starter. Exceptional service from staff. We were staying at the Lansdown Grove hotel and The Chequers was a short walk away, although very steep uphill on the way back! I would definitely recommend to others. Really lovely evening, thank you.

Great atmosphere in busy pub, but glad to be seated upstairs as conversation a bit easier. I always enjoy trying different gins here! The food was very tasty, nicely presented and good quality. The service was very good with check back and good suggestion for wine - I am usually suspicious of upselling, but the server did not recommend an over the top priced wine. The Chequers is never going to be the least expensive meal out in Bath, but the quality is great!

I and a girl friend enjoyed a mid week lunch here. Always reliable, it's generally quiet at lunch time during the week especially as the weather gets colder.

We both enjoyed our main courses and a glass of wine, the Fleurie was especially nice.

Have eaten here before downstairs and all was well, hence we returned for a Sunday lunch, however this time we were upstairs in the restaurant and could see literally directly into the kitchen area through a window at head height level, plus there were food splatters on the wall by the table. The food was barley warm, despite the upstairs area being virtually empty and on the same level as the kitchen area. Not planning on returning any time soon - Disappointing.

We were disappointed as had read such good things about the roast dinner here. The pork belly was delicious but the roast potatoes were inedible...I assume they’d been taken out the oven many hours before and were rock hard. In addition, the table next to us left without ordering as it was made very clear by the staff that they had to order within 7 minutes as the kitchen was closing. This was obvious from the chef moaning at the staff behind the bar! All in all...I would not recommend.

We went for the Sunday roast, for dinner, which many places don't offer. No doubt the staff had had a long day, but they & the roast were still fresh for our 6:30 dinner. The lamb was cooked perfectly--tender & tasty (maybe not enough of it)--and the other parts (potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, other veggies) were all so good, nourishing, simple but perfectly cooked. This was the kind of British food we'd looked for for over a week & never found. Needed this uncomplicated comfort food & it was perfect. Not too expensive either. Staff just right too, attentive enough but not obsequious. So glad we made the effort to walk it from the Dukes hotel (which I also recommend--Bath our luckiest town)!

Quite expensive food and drink. Food was okay but not great. Didn’t like having dogs on both sides of our table, barking a few times and one seated up on a chair at one point.

We visited on a day out in Bath and used the Sawdays 2 for 1 offer for lunch. We enjoyed it very much and thought the quality of the food was outstanding. Also a very nice pub which has been modernised but still retains its character. Would definitely recommend it.

Very disappointed. We decided on this restaurant for the reviews given.

The waiting staff were fantastic, the pub great but unfortunately the meal wasn’t up to our usual standard.

The roast potatoes were very hard. They weren’t seasoned. I don’t like a lot of salt but they did need some seasoning. The meat, was nice. The meal just wasn’t anything special. We definitely won’t be going there again unfortunately, which is a shame as we go out most Sunday’s and would have been nice to have found another restaurant we could visit regularly.

Three lamb was overcooked, it was 15:15, last booking of the day and they should really have taken it off the menu. The beef still looked good but if rather have been told that the lamb was of the menu than served with something past its best
