Great food, perfect Sunday roast/ generous servings. The lamb to share was delicious!
A friendly local pub with good food . Unpretentious and relaxed. Service was attentive. Food was freshly cooked . There was a good selection for lunch.
Very delicious food and fantastic service. Nothing was too much trouble.
Great gastro pub in a good location, with friendly, discreet and informed service. Wife had fish which was a little small as a dish for the price though the steak was lovely. Bath prices but learning to expect that and this is better than others and good atmosphere - not too loud but a buzz as well. Definitely recommend
Beautiful food, with something for everyone. Only criticism was expense. £160 for 4 people, with only one alcoholic drink each and then tap water. Definitely great for special occasion but too expensive for weekly night out.
My partner and I stumbled upon the Chequers as our ‘first taste of Bath’, dining on the set lunch menu soon after arriving into the city. Both courses were outstanding, with the Cod (my choice of main), not out of place with something served at a Nathan Outlaw restaurant. As a consequence, I would have gladly paid double vs. what we actually did. Wine list very agreeable and staff friendly. Only downside was that, having eaten here for lunch, we thought that we best go elsewhere for dinner... a shame as I can imagine the tasting menu is superb. We will be returning.
Great food, excellent service, good beer and wine, and ideal atmosphere
Lovely roast beef, perfectly pink . Friendly staff.
Only problem was the noise, a party either side of us made it difficult to hear.
Outstanding food once again. The Chequers never disappoints.
Nice atmosphere, but no real ale on on a Friday night, which was a shame, and disappointing. The wine was good though. Food was interesting and tasty, but portions were very small. Our waiter was exactly right (i.e. didn't interrupt us while we were talking, which is a rare consideration nowadays) so we left a decent tip, but they are going for the 'fine dining' thing, rather than just good pub food. It is more a restaurant than a pub, early evening.
Our most favourite rest in Bath and we live here. Ranks way above some other places with fancier settlings and rave reviews. Lovely atmosphere in a Gastro Pub setting, terrible friendly and fabulous fresh food.
The cooking was good and so was the service. Some of the plates were very small (both starters and mains), although luckily the biggest eater in our party had a burger with chips so was satisfied. I should have remembered to ask for a downstairs table as upstairs is much less cosy and warm. I think it will be a while until I try it again, even though we live quite close.
Lovely atmosphere, ate here on a Saturday lunchtime. Fish & chips were excellent and gnocchi from the tasting menu delicious (Portion could have been slightly larger). Some nice wines on the menu, could do with larger selection of beer/ale but not an issue. Cosy with the fires burning and the snow falling outside. Overall really good value for money and glad we chose to eat here. Would recommend and visit again.
Another splendid lunch at The Chequers. The décor is lovely, with a fire in the grate. Our waitress was very friendly knowledgeable and attentive, there were no long waits between courses. The food here is excellent, and equally good if you are a vegetarian. Everything is beautifully presented.
Once again amazing experience - best roast dinner in bath!
The Chequers never fails to disappoint, superb wine list coupled with a varied menu that’s seasonal and changes regularly. If you are in Bath you must visit.
I've previously dined here and always enjoyed a wonderful experience.
Hence I'm so disappointed by my most recent visit.
The staff were very slow and on occasion rude - I'm not sure if this was deliberate or just down to ignorance and therefore poor staff training. A further example was One guest asked for bread as a first course, to be then told that the establishment did not sell bread on a Sunday - yet three of us had bread with our first course as did another table.
We were seated at 4.15, our first course did not arrive until 5.30, 45 minutes later the next course. The food was most disappointing in quality ! A surprise as previously I have recommended the place most highly and often.
I have been undecided about leaving a bad review on the website, and have not listed all of our problems here.
Excellent food and service. Had the soup for starters which was nice but would of liked it to be hotter. Others in our group had the squid which they thoroughly enjoyed. Sunday lunch was delicious and generous pudding portion. Will be returning.
The food was excellent and 3 course lunch was very reasonable for what it was!
Salmon starter was very fresh and sauce was a good accent to it.
The cod was superb. Sauce and some garnish had good harmonies.
Fondant was excellent too!
Lovely place delicious food and excellent service. Would highly recommend .
Very underwhelmed by the food, everything was lukewarm and it appears the roasted vegetables were prepared quite a bit earlier. Very expensive, mediocre Sunday lunch!
The food and service was absolutely fantastic. I have never quite had a sunday lunch to that standard before and as a person who doesn't love dates in sticky toffee pudding you have now converted me !! The whole experience of a perfect sunday lunch was flawless and we will certainly be coming back and recommending to all of our friends and family.
Chosen for location and convenience really but glad we did. Menu is short and looks a bit ordinary but there’s something different and creative about every dish. We both had the cod which was marvellous. Good value to at £19 for two courses. Altogether excellent and highly recommended.
We were pretty disappointed with our dinner at Chequers to be honest. We called up in advance and asked to put the table back by 30 mins as we were running a bit late which was accommodating with the caveat that we may have to wait for our food as they were very busy at that time. In truth, I doubt they were more than two thirds full.
But that's not really my issue. I take issue with the prices on the menu (which clearly I knew before booking). I think if you charge £10 for starters and £23-£25 for mains then you need to deliver really good, tasty, elegant food, backed with professional, knowledgeable, attentive service. And I don't think Chequers delivers that. I had the lamb and my wife had the steak, both of which were reasonable but not memorable or stand out.
It's ok, but it really should deliver more at that level. There are too many restaurants that pitch themselves at that price-point and fail to back it up and I'm afraid that Chequers is one of these for me. In a bigger city with more competition, I think it would get found out.
Friendly, nice atmosphere and contemporary decor in a lovely Georgian building. Food was imaginative and well priced with an good wine list and friendly, cheerful service. Had lunch on a February Friday with two old friends from out of town and both were very impressed. Good plus points - it's slightly out of the heart of the town so you can actually park quite easily (metered), will be good to try in the summer for al fresco eating. Only, minor downside- quite a lot of noisy very small kids which I guess you wouldn't get in the evening.
The waitress and waiter were extremely friendly, apparently 20 minutes is a "wait on food" but I would say that is an excellent time on food arrival.
The food was very nice. Compliments to the chef and his team.
Excellent food quality on main course. Good service with friendly waiter . Dessert menu rather limited. Very good wine list.
Really enjoyed our dinner, starter could have been larger or advised that two couldn’t share, probably wouldn’t ask for a tip at the end but other than that; delicious!!
Went on a Sunday evening for a meal after being at the spa. They had the roast menu on until the evening that day which was a very welcome surprise. The ambience was perfect. Chilled, family and friends vibe. Warm fire burning in the corner and mellow music playing on great quality speakers. The food was fab, I had the burger and chips and my partner had the chicken roast. Both very good portion sizes and very tasty. We then got a sticky toffee pud, and a peanut butter semi freddo for desert. Very nicely presented and delicious. Would highly recommend as the staff are friendly and welcoming.
Had a lovely meal Friday night. The food was perfect! Only thing that let the meal down was sitting so close the tables next to us.
Really enjoyed our meal. Ox cheek was delicious. Haddock & chips recommended too. Cheese & biscuits nice selection. Great service too.
My partner and I have decided between us that a Sunday Roast is our favourite all-round meal. After hearing that The Chequers offers one of the best roasts in Bath, we decided to go for our anniversary.
I really enjoyed the experience overall - The Chequers is warm and welcoming, as well as being unfussy and comfortable in it's atmosphere. The service is also excellent, and we were looked after attentively through all courses (though not too attentively, which is something some venues can often get wrong).
Despite this, I couldn't help but feel that the prices were a little steep for the portion size, which if I'm honest was the only drawback of the meal.
I would return to The Chequers and recommend it for any special occasion, or when you're willing to splash out a little bit more for a cosy Sunday indulgence.
Well worth a visit
Lovely, warm and friendly ... food delicious and great location.
Delicious food and elegant surroundings in a quiet street of Bath.
Never disappointed by Chequers. Imaginative food. Always recommend Chequers to my Airbnb guests and many have taken up my suggestion.
Fantastsic food - really outstanding. Would definitly go back.
A lovely birthday family lunch. We really enjoyed the meal.
We're staying at the Royal Crescent Hotel, around the corner and their restaurant is undergoing a refurbishment so they recommended a few places nearby, The Chequers being one of them. What a great meal we had! Everything was delicious, very chic, modern, high end and all in a really casual, comfortable atmosphere. Highly recommend the Salt and Pepper Squid and the Beetroot Salad as starters. My venison was delicious (if a little skimpy) and Rick's Fish and Chips were clean, fresh and terrific. Finished with a cheese plate, instead of a normal dessert, and forgot about how great this is to change things up, now and then! GO GO GO
