The Chequers - Bath
The menu compromises of refined, beautifully presented modern British fare, but The Chequers stays true to its roots by also offering a classics menu. The Sunday roast is legendary and won the Bath Good Food Award for best Sunday lunch in Bath. Add to that a great wine list and a selection of well kept local ciders and ales and you have The Chequers.
We're located just a short walk from some of Bath's most famous landmarks – the Circus and the Royal Crescent. So whether you live or work locally, or are a visitor to Bath, you're equally welcome and we look forward to seeing you.
I had the pleasure of eating here for the first time on Sunday and it was fabulous. Our waitress (I think her name was Jasmine) was extremely friendly & attentive. The food was delicious. I had the roast beef (perfectly pink) and my partner has the pork and he said it was very tasty. I often find roast potatoes on roasts out not great but these were so crispy and fluffy inside. Also need to give a shout out to the sticky toffee pudding for dessert because it was one of the best i've ever had. Really recommend this place & we'll be back.
We had a lovely evening meal here on Saturday night. The venue is cosy and comfortable. The food was delicious, especially the devilled lamb kidneys starter. Exceptional service from staff. We were staying at the Lansdown Grove hotel and The Chequers was a short walk away, although very steep uphill on the way back! I would definitely recommend to others. Really lovely evening, thank you.
Great atmosphere in busy pub, but glad to be seated upstairs as conversation a bit easier. I always enjoy trying different gins here! The food was very tasty, nicely presented and good quality. The service was very good with check back and good suggestion for wine - I am usually suspicious of upselling, but the server did not recommend an over the top priced wine. The Chequers is never going to be the least expensive meal out in Bath, but the quality is great!
Booked in for Sunday Roast on a whim. Will now look to go back in the future. It was absolutely lovely!
A lovely atmosphere, staff attentive and helpful. The food was lovely. Very obliging with dog
Always a great experience to dine at Chequers - still my favourite of the 4 pubs in the group.
Lovely Sunday lunch at the Chequers. I think this will become a regular event!
The best Sunday roast I’ve had in a long time! Couldn’t fault any of it. Will definitely be going again.
Excellent food. Service was bang on.
I and a girl friend enjoyed a mid week lunch here. Always reliable, it's generally quiet at lunch time during the week especially as the weather gets colder.
We both enjoyed our main courses and a glass of wine, the Fleurie was especially nice.
Have eaten here before downstairs and all was well, hence we returned for a Sunday lunch, however this time we were upstairs in the restaurant and could see literally directly into the kitchen area through a window at head height level, plus there were food splatters on the wall by the table. The food was barley warm, despite the upstairs area being virtually empty and on the same level as the kitchen area. Not planning on returning any time soon - Disappointing.
Fantastic food and service was amazing too. Highly recommend.
We were disappointed as had read such good things about the roast dinner here. The pork belly was delicious but the roast potatoes were inedible...I assume they’d been taken out the oven many hours before and were rock hard. In addition, the table next to us left without ordering as it was made very clear by the staff that they had to order within 7 minutes as the kitchen was closing. This was obvious from the chef moaning at the staff behind the bar! All in all...I would not recommend.
We went for the Sunday roast, for dinner, which many places don't offer. No doubt the staff had had a long day, but they & the roast were still fresh for our 6:30 dinner. The lamb was cooked perfectly--tender & tasty (maybe not enough of it)--and the other parts (potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, other veggies) were all so good, nourishing, simple but perfectly cooked. This was the kind of British food we'd looked for for over a week & never found. Needed this uncomplicated comfort food & it was perfect. Not too expensive either. Staff just right too, attentive enough but not obsequious. So glad we made the effort to walk it from the Dukes hotel (which I also recommend--Bath our luckiest town)!
Quite expensive food and drink. Food was okay but not great. Didn’t like having dogs on both sides of our table, barking a few times and one seated up on a chair at one point.
We visited on a day out in Bath and used the Sawdays 2 for 1 offer for lunch. We enjoyed it very much and thought the quality of the food was outstanding. Also a very nice pub which has been modernised but still retains its character. Would definitely recommend it.
Good food in friendly relaxed surroundings and some great background music. Would definitely book again
Just brilliant food, service and location. Perfect for special occasions and not pretentious
Very disappointed. We decided on this restaurant for the reviews given.
The waiting staff were fantastic, the pub great but unfortunately the meal wasn’t up to our usual standard.
The roast potatoes were very hard. They weren’t seasoned. I don’t like a lot of salt but they did need some seasoning. The meat, was nice. The meal just wasn’t anything special. We definitely won’t be going there again unfortunately, which is a shame as we go out most Sunday’s and would have been nice to have found another restaurant we could visit regularly.
Delicious food, delightful service at this gorgeous English pub in the heart of Bath.
The food is. extremely good and as a group of 6 all the plates returned empty and we enjoyed. Only issue was a drinks order never arrived but the team addressed the matter to our satisfaction.
The street level bar could do with a freshen up , bit tatty , but this did not detract from good food and service
Lovely restaurant in quiet area of scenic Bath. Staff very friendly and helpful on arrival and throughout the evening. Food of a very high standard and presented beautifully. Wide range of drinks. Lovely quiet ambience. Toilet facilities extremely clean. Exceptional value for what we had with 10 percent off with Bath reward card. Would definitely recommend
The food was tasty although choices were limited. Portions were average - would need to order other sides if you were hungry. Service was pleasant enough
Three lamb was overcooked, it was 15:15, last booking of the day and they should really have taken it off the menu. The beef still looked good but if rather have been told that the lamb was of the menu than served with something past its best
We have observed over previous meals the the proportion size has reduced a little. Otherwise excellent
We are fairly regular lunch clients here. The food is good and reliable and value for money. More recently, the lunch menu has seemed to offer less choice and not especially balanced. It may be different for dinner.
On this occasion, we had difficulty in initially finding any staff. It appears that they were all upstairs with a big party, although we saw nothing of this. Once someone had appeared to man the bar things proceeded smoothly.
Everything we ate was perfect .
Lots of menu options
We had the lamb sharing roast and it was amazing
A rocky start from a service perspective but the food and wine was all excellent. The roast chicken and lamb dishes we ate were really very good. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the decor simple yet effective and I'd definitely recommend.
Great friendly service
Lovely sunday lunch with great choice of roasts available. The staff were very attentive and helpful throughout. We would return upon our next stay in bath.
Overall great food and good value. Had a fairly noisy/boozy table near us but in fairness, the staff did apologise for this. Rice pudding dessert was a bit weird and undercooked.
Had a great late lunch, food was really good, the Sirlon of beef was perfect, all of it was pink and very moist, the belly of pork was very fatty, but what meat there was was really good. What we liked was we were not rushed. Highly recomend it..
Enjoyable evening with friends. Good food and friendly attentive service. Thankyou.
We were disappointed with the promised ‘seafood weekend’ the oysters were excellent but the Hake main course very poor. Small portion of very dry fish, virtually no sauce and hard to eat vegetable .
Our guests are stringy squid and a tasteless seafood soagetti- 2 prawns and a couple of mussels do not constitute a seafood pasta dish.
The noise level was uncomfortable and whilst the service was Ok it was very amateur. We declined a pudding due to poor quality of main course and the noise.
We have always loved the Chequers and jumped at a chance to book a table for their British Oyster and Shellfish weekend. Sadly it was far from what we had imagined, The seafood platter consisted of 4 shelled Thai prawns, 8 cooked mussels, a small dish of white crabmeat, a spoonful of cockles and an oyster, all this for nearly £30 ! Very disappointing indeed. We were expecting a big round plate of ice topped with fresh prawns, whelks, clams and either a whole crab or whole lobster..... Too much to hope for. I must say the rest of the time we have always eaten very well at the Chequers, but the Shellfish weekend might need a rethink.
This was our first visit and we will definitely go back. Great atmosphere quite intimate but still a nice buzz going on. The food and service was exceptional and also really great value. Would highly recommend thank you!
Best pub roast I've had... the beef was incredible!
Delicious food. Well presented. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Service was good. A bit expensive but my husband and I had Artisan bread, mains , deserts and drinks so we could have cut back if we wanted. However, it was my birthday treat and I am worth it !
Good value good, pleasant and friendly staff. Good dining experience
