Thank you for a lovely meal, really enjoyed our evening.
Couldn't have asked for friendlier staff right from the moment we walked through the door.
Food was delicious, we had the steak and the duck which were both cooked to perfection.
Thank you again, would definately vist again.
Honestly I left the hotel in tears I have raved about Churchill’s for ages to my cousins who were on this special occasion celebrating my 60th birthday and our ruby anniversary, we booked thinking they did the special at £27.50 for 3 course we were told that they didn’t do this offer anymore and I explained what the website had said and Churchill’s basically said tough and the manager on duty was rude and lacked any empathy to the situation and did nothing to appease the situation, a few years ago Churchill’s would bend over backwards to make sure their customers had a wonderful experience at the hotel upgraded rooms for returning customers and the menu was far superior to what they are serving now I’m afraid I think the 4* rating is very lacking and I’m so disappointed and upset about the situation
Food was sent back. Unable to eat it. Ordered a home made pie with trimmings. Meat was tough and the gravy poor, almost watery. Had to wait in the bar for over half an hour before being taken to an almost empty dining area even though I had booked a table. The serving staff was very apologetic. What a pity as the restaurant ambiance was good. Thought we were in for a good evening. Sadly it wasn’t to be.
It was my wife's birthday and even though I had noted this on the reservation, nothing was done to make the experience special in anyway. We weren't even welcomed to the table, we had to find the waitress. There was another party that arrived 45- hour later for an 80th, and were given full attention. We were stuck out of the way in the large room.
We couldn't get a reservation at 730pm, only at 7pm. Only to find it was myself and my wife and another couple dining (who were there with a Groupon voucher). I wouldn't say that the food was value for money, intact my steak was overpriced chewy, and cold. The menu itself was fairly good, plenty of choice, but I wouldn't recommend the steak.
My wife had a better meal in the pie that she chose.
Unable to make 7pm booking online, accepted 7.30pm, but only 2 diners in restaurant on arrival. Waited 20 mins for order to be taken, food mediocre at best, although dessert was delicious.
We had an excellent meal in quiet, peaceful surroundings with friends. It worked very well.
My wife and I dined at The Churchill for our wedding anniversary. The food was delicious, the staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed.
Really enjoyed the Churchill hotel, food and service were great
Very nice food and staff very friendly and helpful. Very nice menu and wine to choose from and have always been happy to come back.
We dined in the restaurant 2 evenings and the good was fabulous. Delicious breakfast too.
Nice selection of veggie stuff - except parmesan is not vegetarian.
Very pleasant evening lovely food and very pleasant atmosphere
Thank you so much for looking after myself, my husband and our guests
The food was amazing, the staff were friendly, professional and thoughtful
Also, a big thank you for arranging our table by the window
Could be a lovely dining venue but food was very average
Very comfortable surroundings, helpful and courteous staff and excellent food.
Good food nice surroundings. Service was ok overall just a bit of polishing up to make it perfect. A little bit more personal interaction and customer attention.
The Churchill is a beautiful space and serves a fabulous meal for a reasonable price. I will absolutely go back the next time I am in York.
Very slow to get food for each course
Cold dining room
Lack of dress code brings the place down
Informer were advised that there was no grazing menu - but were given the full menu. We had a couple of dishes which were great but had hoped to try some of the grazing dishes.
The food was fantastic, the service was friendly but not too intrusive and the room was stunning. Would definitely go back again.
Absolutely fantastic experience, lovely service and the food was spot on! Would highly recommend!
Wonderful hotel, great food, convenient location for touring in York!
Really lovely place to eat and stay, with great food and service.
We were staying at this hotel so decided to book a table for our first of two nights in York. The hotel was clean and well presented. We checked in, got changed for dinner and moved through to the restaurant area. There was no one to greet us upon our arrival so we went through to the bar area to try and get a drink. The one working bar maid was busy talking to another customer and did not acknowledge our being there. After a few minutes we tired of waiting (We did feel quite awkward and as though we should not have been there) so we moved back to the restaurant area where we managed to flag down a passing waitress. We were told to go and find s seat and she would be with us shortly.
A few minutes later the waitress returned and we asked to view the wine list as this was not on our table. The waitress handed us a wine list and disappeared. That was unfortunately the last contact we had with any staff that evening. The restaurant was not very busy with only 4 other tables occupied yet we sat there without a drink or any food while every other table around us was served, some of which twice! After 20 minutes we tired of waiting so decided to leave. We found a lovely restaurant in York (of which there are many) and enjoyed a lovely evening.
As a 2aa rosette restaurant and 4 star hotel, I found the service shocking. I have never walked out of a restaurant before. I would never return or recommend this place to friend or foe.
We were staying at the hotel and decided to eat there on one of the evenings. We were sat in a separate room from all the other diners, and there was no atmosphere. The service before we ate was good. The starter tasted ok. After we were served our main meal, no one came to see if everything was ok. Our main meals generally tasted ok but everything was cold, I don’t know how long it had been sitting before we were served it. When our plates were being cleared away I informed the waitress who said she would let the manager know. The poor waitress was obviously sent back out to apologise to us on manager/manageress behalf. We paid over £100 for our meal and some wine, but we will definitely not be returning, or recommending to any one.
For some reason, even though this hotel took our booking, and we travelled over 100 miles to visit, they do not even serve lunch. I could go on but do not want to waste more time on a very forgettable experience. Went over the road to the Grange whom graciously accepted our last minute (literally) booking.
We were surprised at finding this value restaurant that provided almost fine dining at a reasonable price.
We shall be back !
We had a 3 course dinner on the Sunday Night while staying at the hotel. Food was superb, some lovely tastes. Cauliflower and cheddar soup was amazing. Lovely atmosphere, nice, quiet background music playing. Both of us had 3 courses and a bottle of wine and it was very reasonably priced. Would definitely eat there again. Staff very pleasant and attentive.
Lovely setting. Friendly, attentive staff. Busy but not too busy and noise level was just about right. Food was excellent. All round, worth the short walk from the city centre. Would definitely go again.
Good simple food cooked well. Excellent service and nice relaxed atmosphere.
Booked a table with the hopes of having a special meal on a trip to York with my partner.
Waited 40 minutes for mains which we had not ordered, then an additional 30 for it to be corrected. The waiter heard 'chicken' and ordered us the Yorkshire Relish Chicken and did not confirm it with us when we had actually asked for Chicken and Leak Pie.
When food did arrive it was not really worth the wait. The mash was very mustardy and the pie itself not very flavourful, however having waited so long we ate due to hunger. We did not order dessert as it had gotten late and I did not want to be further disappointed.
The service itself was fine, the price was not bad and the restaurant itself was very nice, but the wait time and food quality meant the overall experience was a let down.
Outstanding service and food from beginning to end. They made our small wedding dinner feel like a really really special occasion. Staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. We are so happy with the Churchill York and would reccomend to anyone looking for a hotel for a special occasion to book here.
Picked this restaurant from the reviews on line. It's nothing special, the food was ok, but again nothing special. The lamb was served with a chargrilled little gem lettuce sat astride it,yuk. We went for our anniversary dinner and filled in the booking form appropriately, the table we were given was in the middle of the room, fair play, the waitress did move us to another table at my request, but what a damp squib the evening was. We celebrated on another night at a different restaurant and had a great time, for a cheaper price, just not at Churchills. Would be ok for a quick bite after work if you didn't want to cook, maybe. Anna the waitress was lovely and attentive, what an asset.
Nice hotel, bar and restaurant. Never been before but better than expected. Usually hotel restaurants are quiet and sterile but this was quite busy for a Sunday night and nice ambience. We used the Meerkat meals for 241 otherwise it would have been expensive. Food good and nice wine.
I think the restaurant might have been short staffed on the evening we attended, as I had to remind the waiter that we had ordered two drinks about 6 minutes after requesting them. We were also asked if we wanted to see the dessert menus, which we did, but they were never actually provided; after 10 minutes, we gave up and left. The food we did have was good quality and well prepared, and the staff tried their best but were possibly a little inexperienced.
Welcoming friendly staff, food tasty and a relaxed atmosphere
This hotel is ideally situated within walking distance of the Minster and city centre. Food was excellent and a varied and wide choice.
The food was amazing, incredible mussels and steak. It’s a beautiful room. It was a lovely location to celebrate a birthday and was nice to return to a restaurant with my partner from the first trip away we took three years ago. The service was ok but little things could have made it better. The water bowls and dirty cutlery from the starters were left throughout the whole meal. I had to ask for dirty glasses to be moved because the table was completely cluttered. The dessert wasn’t the best either as it was stated as cheesecake but had no base and was just cream mixture with berries mixed in.
A super restaurant, but the menu was not as good as it could be. It was delicious though it could be a little bit more.
Would also be nice to be able to eat outside, especially for smokers and there is plenty of room. My guests were all smokers and are used to being catered for so please bear in mind.
Beautifully decorated but relaxed atmosphere. Friendly and helpful service. Fabulous food - I'd definitely recommend the fish and chips and the sorbet was delicious. Couldn't fault any aspect
