Sunday Lunch
So, what's the story behind the people at The Bay Restaurant? Well, there's Gavin Oakley, he's at the helm of the place. With quite a few years of experience in the restaurant game. He was trained in the art of cooking by his father Chris a Michelin starred chef and comes from the 'stables' of Albert and Michel Roux the Godfathers of Great British Cuisine. Gavin is passsionate about producing food with "flavour and oomph" using great raw ingredients, he's often to be found out and about at local markets or in the wilds of White Cliffs Country searching for the best produce kent has to offer. At Gavin's side are a young team of talented chefs. Andrew Butcher, a highly qualified chef takes the lead in the kitchen and works relentlessly in the pursuit of excellence. His 'wing man' is Chris Parker a young man whose travels and experiences around the globe bring a freshness and vitality into the mix. Their combined enthusiasm is evident in the fresh feel of the place and we hope you enjoy.

We dined here with our daughter who was visiting us for the weekend. My daughter and husband had the steak which they both enjoyed. I had the Chicken Escalope which had lemon bread crumbs. Service was just right. Restaurant is nicely decorated. It has an outdoor garden with a pizza oven. Worth a visit.

Lovely meal, little disappointed with the lack of choice in the lunch menu and not clearly explained. Not all on the specials board was on offer, we had to ask which was dinner and lunch menu. Service was slow and we had to keep asking although staff friendly were not clear. Been before last year and the lunch options were much better in the past which is why we came back. Overall still a lovely place to eat.

Had Sunday lunch here. Delicious food, good service and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Asked for some extra veg (which was very tasty) and it was bought to us within minutes. Very pleased

Lovely food but the restaurant and the toilets could benefit from some TLC- it is looking very tired, worn- out and scruffy.

Totally enjoyable dining experience. Mussel starter was marvellous and fillet steak just wonderful too. I would have ordered a large mussel as a main course if I had know how lovely it was. Thanks for a lovely meal.

I only see my sisters once a year so we like to make it something special.

We had a lovely time and our meal was amazing. The staff were friendly and efficient, too.

You are unable to sit at your table and order food from a menu. Instead you have to stare at a large blackboard & then order at the bar so if you ask for a description of what something is & don't fancy it, you then have to go back to the board again.
I had the Kentish Blue Salad which sounded very nice. It was actually a bit strange. Both hot & cold lettuce with crumb sized bits of blue cheese & walnut, but as well as mixing hot & cold lettuce (this should never happen) there were also 2 quartered pieces of very crisp apple but this too was hot as it been put on a griddle but still as crisp as an uncooked Granny Smith. My husband had pork fritters. Fritters are defined as slices covered in batter. What actually turned up were pea sized bits of pork deep fried in batter, so more like croutons really & then only about 6 on the plate.
We both had crab with a breadcrumb topping. The crab was all dark meat & it ended up being quite sickly. It was also the temperature of molten lava & I had to empty it out of it's dish onto the plate to try to cool it down a bit.
Overall the service from the waitress was great but the rest of it was pretty awful. The food combinations were awful, it didn't taste very nice & it was well overpriced.
What was even more disappointing, was the website looks fantastic but none of the menus on the website were available just a pretty lack lustre blackboard choice.
A classic case of trying too hard to be a bit different but going way over the edge.

Only found this gem a few months ago and have been 3 times already. Food is amazing, staff very helpful and friendly and a great atmosphere. 3 Courses for £20 on a Sunday what a bargain.
The only thing I would say is the Sunday menu is a bit limited but otherwise a fantastic restaurant.

It sounded promising from the description on the blackboard (no menus). But when it came it didn't quite live up to the description and was quite expensive. However the atmosphere is very warm and congenial and the service was friendly and attentive, so it was a good experience overall.

My partner & I were out celebrating our anniversary. We chose this venue as we wanted some good quality food & drink with a soft and country feel in the background.

We have also eaten here before with a group booking last summer, the food was truly outstanding then...sadly on our latest occasion the food wasn't so good :-(. I chose the scotch egg to start & the pork belly for my main, which I was very excited about. Scotch egg came & was delicious! My partner had the Camembert & that was equally as nice. Our mains followed but sadly weren't as lovely, my pork belly dish was SO dry. The belly itself, the mash & the beans.. A real shame. My partner had the burger as a main, which was 'okay' but the meat was also a bit dry. (We just wish we ordered the steak, they looked beautiful going to other diners!)

I will always recommend the Cliff's as a hotel, restaurant & just for drinks because it's such a lovely place, the staff were so welcoming too!!

we all had the Sunday lunch, beef was lovely but there could have been more. Vegetables were very good, but potatoes were a bit weird and it would have been nice to have some new boiled as well.. A little overpriced for a Sunday lunch.

Booking was easy and efficient. Staff friendly, helpful and did everything that was asked thank you.
Table needed wiping in front of two of us, which was done immediately, however waiting staff said ' there was no-one here at break fast so don't know why that has happened..' this made it obvious it may have been there from the day before. Cutlery had water marks from dishwasher.
Food was good and served well.
Fans not working in toilets.

first visit as new to the area, booked on the basis of its locality and menu seen on the website.
we were very impressed overall, the best part was the service which was very attentive but not over fussy or intrusive - clearly the front of house staff can cope well and are used to it being very busy.
the welcome was warm, any little errors/problems/mistakes (mostly my making!) were sorted quickly without issue.
the beer was outstanding as was the wine list, the menu is varied.
the food was tasty, good quality, good quantity, well presented and sensibly priced too.
we'll definitely be returning & that's the best feedback we can give.

thank you

I went to The Cliff for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend. Food was very good, I loved the ambience and service was nice and careful. There is no service charge which is a plus, we left a tip tough, as they really deserved it

We were pleasantly surprised at the small dining room at the The Cliffe and the staff were very friendly. Unfortunately our starter order was put through incorrectly and after quite a wait I had to send my order back as it was not as I had ordered. The mains, 2 roast beef, were fine although the potatoes were hard to break through (I'm sure they had been sitting since start of service and by now it was almost 2.45pm) and we were not offered any sauces, I had to try and catch a waitress to ask for some horse radish. The price of the food was very reasonable although we were at first charged for the incorrect order, and we will probably try once more before giving up on this restaurant.

Lovely Sunday lunch had with my family a fine selection on the menu. Plenty of choice. Food was well cooked and the service was very good. Not rushed at all. The only downside was the price of my pint of local beer £5.30. Way too expensive. But still a lovely meal.

Delicious tasty home cooked food, piping hot and plenty of it. Complimentary home made bread with olives were a welcome surprise and set our taste buds going. Lovely cheerful friendly staff in colorful surroundings, we really enjoyed the visit.

Been to this pub a couple of times now when we stay in St Margaret's. It's a lovely cosy pub with good service. The fire was lovely when we arrived in the cold and dark on Saturday! Menu was interesting and tasty and the kids portions are a good size for hungry children. Would definitely recommend.
