The Compasses Inn
Lovely pub with great food and excellent service, I highly recommend this place!
Every time my family and I visit the Compasses we wish we came every week. The food is beautifully cooked and presented while the overall atmosphere never fails to charm. A jewel in the crown as far as we’re concerned.
Excellent dinner venue, we took friends who hadn't been before, they were very impressed. 3 of us had the fish pies (with a portion of chips ! ) and one curry. All clean plates. Very acceptable bottle of red, 3 dessert plus 1 cheese. A very enjoyable evening in a comfortable venue
The bar man could not get our order right, despite checking with us on several occasions . It wasn’t even a complicated order.
He then tried to charge us for another table’s food and drink and assured us he hadn’t processed the wrong payment. When we got home, we checked our bank account and had been charged for both tables, ours and the other table. We spent quite a long time on the phone waiting for the refund to be agreed and was not even offered any compensation for their terrible service or mistake. I am still waiting for the refund to credit my account.
The standard of food at this pub is breathtaking. A really imaginative menu mixing traditional pub grub with other tasty options. We had lamb kebabs with a salad and grains and it was so delicious my wife said it was the best meal she had had in a while. The scotch eggs as a starter are insane , hot with egg running.
Really good food and a pub which still retains its original character . Excellent!
Wonderful atmospheric pub with great food and good local bitter.
Perfect country pub for a relaxed meal, complete with a good selection of ale and friendly service!
Excellent place. Old pub in glorious part of Wiltshire. Dark and atmospheric with great beer and comfortable rooms
Delicious lunch with 4 friends this week - my hake was divine. Friendly and knowledgeable hosts in out of the way, old thatched cottage. Just lovely, thank you.
lovely character pub .full of atmosphere always our go to place for a cosy evening service excellent staff smiley and helpful .really good food lovely choices .thank you for a lovely evening for our anniversary .
We visited with some friends over from the USA who found the whole experience amazing. My wife eats only a plant based diet whom they catered well for with a tasty bowl of chilli. The whole time from entering to leaving was a joy.
Great Pub that I can't recommend highly enough !! Great building, not modernised .
It was a very nice evening! We could spend time outside in the terrace and then have dinner inside. Very cozy and Holly and Matthew have been super kind with us!!! Definitely waiting to come back soon!!!
One of our favourite pubs. Food is consistently good. Chilli squid especially! Good English pub, definitely recommend.
Traditional pub, cosy and full of character. Excellent food and friendly service. One of our local favourites
Great food, relaxed atmosphere. What’s not to love!
Beautiful day, delicious food, great wine......discreet service, what more to ask?
Just brilliant! A real gem of a traditional pub. Cannot fault the food or the service. They take dogs too! We will definitely be back.
Our favourite venue
If you like log fires good food and a real old pub then look no further
A lovely experience, good food and looking forward to our next visit
Nice pub. With good atmosphere. Food fair but portions small for the price.
Seriously we wish this was our local pub! Currently on mid term break, experiencing Bath, Bovey Castle, Boscastle and then Compasses Inn. What a treat! From the experience of driving down the single track roads to the pub, opening the door, hearing the laughter from fellow guests. What warmth and open arms...the service is beyond words, food delicious....as I said...can you please come to Chiswick and be our local pub?
Loved the Compasses Inn, its very rare to find a pub these days with all of the original features. Was very cosy and we were lucky to get a table by the log fire.
Food was delicious and the rooms super comfy and breakfast delicious. Was also a nice touch to provide homemade cookies on arrival and high quality toiletries. Will be back if we are in the area again.
Thanks for your hospitality.
Bijou, warm , welcoming. The Venison was better than that served up at The Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath.
The gentleman looking after us was friendly and well mannered. Have been in some nice Inns but what is so special about The Compasses is that it retains it's character. We LOVE it . And the location is superb.
Bests from Elsa-Marie
Great place to take someone for sunday lunch, a quiet evening, a party or a special occasion. Excellent prompt service - interesting menu and well prepared imaginative food.
It is really worth the effort making the journey to this country pub, cosy inside for the winter months and plenty of outdoor space in unspoilt countryside in the summer. The friendly service and atmosphere, combined with a delicious menu of classic and inventive dishes using locally sourced produce make this place an absolute gem which we always enjoy going back to.
Great atmospheric pub, delicious imaginative menu and smiley friendly staff in a real pub decor. Only comment would be it needs a better outside sign, could easily miss the place.
Delicious food exceptional service cosy ambiance. Hard to see how it could be bettered.
Wonderful food, just the ideal amount and great atmosphere. Highly Recommend!!!!
We were welcomed very warmly, the delicious food arrived quickly and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.
Venison pie was overcooked and dry. Small scoop of mash potato. Overpriced.
I had lunch at the Compasses with my husband and two other couples. We all very much greatly enjoyed our meal but it was very much spoilt by feeling extremely cold. We arrived, as booked, at 12.30 to find the fire only just being lit. Our very friendly round table was a good way from the fire and its effects never reached us. When we stated that we were very cold, we were told that there was also a gas heater but it was not on even though it was a very cold day. After some delay and phone calls, it was lit. However, although some heat was given out on the other side of the heater, none was given out to us and we remained very cold. the only other heater appeared to be an electric heater which was off-the-chill but by no means warm. Several of the party kept their thick outdoor coats on throughout, the rest of us retained all of our warm layers. The chilly atmosphere was not lightened by the staff one of whom was extremely efficient but not at all friendly. The staff did not seem to hang around in the bar or restaurant area! The coldness of the bar/restaurant and staff have greatly influenced the value score I have given as I think one should be comfortable in a restaurant, pub or otherwise. None of the attractions listed with tick boxes seems to apply: it seems noteworthy for the quality of the old building and the food.
Consistently interesting and delicious food in this delightful unspoilt country pub. The bar is cosy and attractive with several good beers and ciders and the staff are friendly and attentive. Takes a little persistence to get there down single track roads but always well worth it and very good value for money.
This is the second time that l've eaten here and it din't disappoint. Lovely ambience with all the Christmas decorations and a log fire. The food was delicious, especially the chocolate dessert with liquor cherries!
Third visit in as many months. New menu each time. Several standout dishes each time. Delicious. Carefully prepared and presented. Good humoured, helpful and relaxed staff. My favourite restaurant this year.
Fantastic traditional cosy pub with excellent locally sourced food and a great chef.
Excellent as ever, lovely beer, delicious food, attentive and charming staff, and a comfortable setting. I am however, biased as it has been my favorite pub for 20 plus years.
i am loathe to recommend this restaurant as I may not get a booking for myself!
We attended after reading Giles Corans rave review but my food was really overpriced unfortunately - over £18 for a very small "seafood thermidor" and a few chips and a bowl of lettuce. It was a really small portion - 3 or 4 scallops with some cheap looking prawns in a mildly thermidor-ish sauce....really disappointing unfortunately. My friends meals were all perfectly nice - the pork crackling was lovely and the atmos and service was good.
