The Compasses Inn
The Compasses Inn had been recommended by friends some time ago. Only just followed up. We've been missing out! The inn is fascinating in itself - old and quirky with a rich history. The food and service excellent - with a very good wine list to match.
lovely authentic and well cooked local food served with great attention to detail
Love to come here with the kids before they start their week - they look forward to it and we’re never disappointed
Stokingly good in every way. If you are in the area, are looking for great food and enjoy an old-school, pub ambience, then this is an absolute must. It’s the kind of place you yearn to have as a local. 11/10
I love eating at the Compasses. The service is warm and friendly and efficient and the food is always delicious.
We have visited The Compasses Inn a few times since moving to a nearby area. It is definitely one of the best for tasty and well cooked meals.
Absolutely lovely lunch with a really interesting menu and super service. The pub is in a beautiful setting and the whole experience was first class.
Off the beaten track but really enjoyable. Great food, will be back.
Amazing cozy pub!Food brilliant and staff awesome!
love the Sunday evening menu, great place to have a quiet catch up with the family
On a cold day it was a pity the pub wasn't warmer - there was a log fire but it was hardly in and kept going out. How different it would have been if there had been a blazing fire
Great little country pub with excellent food .
Would highly recommend this pub.
Roast lamb on the menu sometimes would be good. Otherwise we had a lovely meal. The staff were attentive and friendly. Just one other thing from a safety perspective, they should think about getting a guard for the log fire. Some of the hot wood spat out on to the floor very close to a child who was sitting with her back to the fire. I jumped up to retrieve it with tongs and threw back on the fire. I did alert the staff. We'll be back.
Lovely village pub with great food. We will be back
A magnificent and very old ( 300 to 400 years) inn. Food delicious and a bit different. Service fast warm and friendly and the atmosphere is of course outstanding. Many thanks
Very friendly staff. Delicious food. Beer in very good condition. Lovely place.
This is a proper pub, full of cheer. Warm welcome from staff. An interesting menu. Food was delicious. Portions were generous without overwhelming us. We will certainly be telling our friends about it and if we are in the area again will come back.
Great seasonal menu changing daily although the regular favourites on the 'bar' are always available . This is our favourite place to eat in Wiltshire. Staff are always welcoming and friendly. Fantastic food
Lovely old pub that we have not visited for a long time but will definitely be back soon. Delicious food and friendly helpful staff.
The food was excellent, the highlight being a ridiculously good hogett hotpot. Good children’s options too and an excellent choice of homemade desserts. All in all, excellent value for money for high quality homemade food. I would say, if being critical that the outside and some of the inside could do with a tidy up but it’s a proper country pub with lots of original touches and character. Will definitely return.
My absolute favourite pub in the South West for consistently delicious food in wonderfully relaxed surroundings.
Absolutely lovely dinner, really high standard, in atmospheric pub
There is very limited choice for vegetarians, disappointing. The pub is full of character but is dingy and cramped.
We have stayed at The Compasses inn many times but it has gone down in our estimation. We stayed in the cottage which was poorly equipped and needed some TLC. The menu has changed considerably and not for the better. The prices were high and selection scant. The quality of my meal was mediocre at best.
We will not be going again.
Loved this pub and will definitely go back and recommend to others. A rare gem of a find. Very old and pretty building and quirky (in a good way) and welcoming inside. Relaxed and warm atmosphere and the landlord and staff were very helpful and friendly. A good range of food available and our meal was just what we were looking for and served quickly and efficiently.
Brilliant old village pub serving great food. Will definitely be eating here again.
Fabulous pub with amazing atmosphere
Lovely pub with great food and excellent service, I highly recommend this place!
Every time my family and I visit the Compasses we wish we came every week. The food is beautifully cooked and presented while the overall atmosphere never fails to charm. A jewel in the crown as far as we’re concerned.
Excellent dinner venue, we took friends who hadn't been before, they were very impressed. 3 of us had the fish pies (with a portion of chips ! ) and one curry. All clean plates. Very acceptable bottle of red, 3 dessert plus 1 cheese. A very enjoyable evening in a comfortable venue
The bar man could not get our order right, despite checking with us on several occasions . It wasn’t even a complicated order.
He then tried to charge us for another table’s food and drink and assured us he hadn’t processed the wrong payment. When we got home, we checked our bank account and had been charged for both tables, ours and the other table. We spent quite a long time on the phone waiting for the refund to be agreed and was not even offered any compensation for their terrible service or mistake. I am still waiting for the refund to credit my account.
The standard of food at this pub is breathtaking. A really imaginative menu mixing traditional pub grub with other tasty options. We had lamb kebabs with a salad and grains and it was so delicious my wife said it was the best meal she had had in a while. The scotch eggs as a starter are insane , hot with egg running.
Really good food and a pub which still retains its original character . Excellent!
Wonderful atmospheric pub with great food and good local bitter.
Perfect country pub for a relaxed meal, complete with a good selection of ale and friendly service!
Excellent place. Old pub in glorious part of Wiltshire. Dark and atmospheric with great beer and comfortable rooms
Delicious lunch with 4 friends this week - my hake was divine. Friendly and knowledgeable hosts in out of the way, old thatched cottage. Just lovely, thank you.
lovely character pub .full of atmosphere always our go to place for a cosy evening service excellent staff smiley and helpful .really good food lovely choices .thank you for a lovely evening for our anniversary .
We visited with some friends over from the USA who found the whole experience amazing. My wife eats only a plant based diet whom they catered well for with a tasty bowl of chilli. The whole time from entering to leaving was a joy.
Great Pub that I can't recommend highly enough !! Great building, not modernised .
