Have been coming to the Compasses fairly regularly since 1970, under three of four different managements. The present management has maintained all the best in the way of atmosphere and added an even better menu: smaller, more original, never pretentious.
Over the years have taken all members of family several times and many friends. They all want to go again.
Surprisingly good food and excellent value. We will return as soon as we’re allowed.
Really enjoyable. Good good, friendly and helpful staff.
Gorgeous food, friendly staff and hugely atmospheric. Just a great old fashioned pub in a beautiful location. Perfect for a wintry evening.
This pub retains an unspoilt charm. On the surface unmodernised and low key, it is welcoming and well run. My companions had starters-potato soup and the pates both went down really well. Mains included the green chilli burger (tasty) and a meaty loaf. I went for a main of roasted red cabbage which was a bit too miso/soy sauce to finish but I enjoyed the first half. Great choice of beers and superb apple juice. Delightful staff, sadly behind masks. We will be back.
Always a great meal at the Compasses Inn and now they are the perfect example of how to arrange your business for social distancing in COVID times. We're so glad they're open.
A very atmospheric pub with much charm. The food was delicious, very good service and altogether we had a lovely evening. We shall go again !
Lovely old pub, great atmosphere. Good friendly service. Food very good although one main was not as described being very spicy. When quaestioned dealt with quickly and excluded from bill. Will go again if in area.
Always love coming here, delicious food and drinks and the best atmosphere- thank you!
As always fantastic; the best pub by far in the whole area!
Super flavourful, brilliantly executed pub dishes.
The pub itself is lovely, but quite small, so we were put outside in a marquee (with next to no atmosphere compared to the actual pub), which was not communicated to us at the time of booking. So if you want that traditional pub experience you expect from Tisbury, be sure to ask where they intend to seat you when booking. Otherwise, friendly staff - also a glass of wine flew across our table & one of us from the waiter's tray, he asked us to move to another table but didn't offer any kind of recompense other than "sorry" - food is nice.
Stunning atmospheric pub with incredible food and excellent wines !
Well worth the drive and gorgeous rooms too If an overnight stay would work !
The chef has an excellent palate , all the food is tasty and well seasoned
Perfect country pub with delicious food. Well above average, my wife and I will definitely be returning as soon as we can. Top notch!
Amazing food, beautiful country pub. Could spend hours there!
Short but excellent menu. Thoughtful service. Atmosphere as ever that of a inn which still remembers that inns are there to offer hospitality.
The Compasses Inn is a wonderful pub, serving really tasty food and a great array of beers. It has a very 'olde worlde' ambiance, somewhat reminiscent of a different, more genteel age of oaken beams and comfortably low-lit nooks and corners. The serving staff were all appropriately kitted out with masks, welcoming and very keen to be of service.
My one (minor, but memorable) gripe, albeit understandable in these days of widely separated tables and low-density occupation, was that the amount of food seemed a bit mean for the price - by which I mean, a bar snack that cost £6 seemed to be around £1 too expensive for the portion size. However, the food itself was delicious, combined with the great staff and the character of the pub, so I definitely will be visiting again.
If you dont have the mutton hot pot when it is on the menu then you will have to live with a great injustice for the rest of your life. It is the stuff dreams are made of.
Pub was too busy, car park over flowing, picnic tables in the tent outside looked very uncomfortable. We walked out as were unhappy with the set up.
We took my 90 year old father out to lunch and asked for a quiet table which we were given. The service was good and my father was very pleased with his delicious plaice.
Outstanding meal, lovely atmosphere, would definitely come again
Poor service. Put in a cold tent that smelt like a farm yard.
An excellent menu with beautifully presented food in an environment which always felt safe and cautious.
The Compasses is one of our favourites, we're not local but always visit when in the area.
Friendly staff, good food and lovely unpretentious atmosphere. Please keep it like this.
I had fish pie which was just how it should be. Full of fish with a superb sauce. My companion had the belly of pork which he stated was excellent.
Service very good.
We stayed at the Compasses and dined there on both nights. The food was delicious and the house wine a great accompaniment. we would definitely return for more asap!
One of the best evening meals during our seven day stay in the area. It was worth the fairly long journey for us. Very professionally run and friendly welcome. We felt comfortable in our little corner with candlelight in the main restaurant, but had the choice of a marquee should we have preferred this in these troubled times. Fish pie superb!
Ambiance perfect for our age group (70+) with a full house of diners nicely spaced.
Best meal out for a long time....,obvious quality ingredients, delicious taste combinations. Full marks to the team👍
The. Impasses is a lovely thatched pub in a fabulously remote hamlet. I have been going there for special occasions such as showing visitors a lovely place, for over 45 years. It is well worth the drive out.
The waiting staff were sweet and they were very obliging. I had a starter as my meal and they were very happy to oblige!
Of course one needs to book currently and food is served in a marquee at the back of the pub - the inside of which is beautiful and very historical.
I would recommend both for food and service!
Great to find a lovely pub/restaurant in such an out of the way place. The food was really tasty and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I would certainly recommend this place.
Would certainly recommend booking....very friendly staff.....excellent food....well priced.
Solicitous and amiable service. Satisfactory choice of food and drink. Quiet and interesting ambiance. Would definitely patronise again when in the area. Enjoyed lunch very much. Food well cooked and tasty. Good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
Food was great. Waiting staff were sweet. Very happy.
Excellent food, great little pub tucked away, friendly and welcoming staff
Great innovative food; well presented, flavoured and delivered.
Lovely welcoming staff and lovely ambiance
Almost like pre-covid days - so nice to have a bit of normality in such difficult times
lunchtime visit, friendly staff, great food and service
Beautiful setting and delicious food with attentive staff
We ate out whilst the Eat Out to Help Out offer was on. The food was excellent as always. The staff were very polite and friendly and we had a really lovely evening.
Service a little slow but good food and a pleasant atmosphere.
Delicious lunch again - twice in one week! Always a pleasure to go there
