The Crusting Pipe
When we arrived the maitre d escorted us to a tiny table in an alcove where there was already a largish group of ladies. We were squashed up against their table and the wall so we asked to move to another table. There were numerous tables available so why we had been put there makes no sense. The table we moved to was right outside a private room with a glass door where a group of men were having their Christmas work do. One man was very drunk and kept coming in and out of the room, wandering around the restaurant and bothering other diners. The staff didn’t do anything about it. My partner went to the bathroom and the drunk man had been sick everywhere which kind of ruined his appetite!
The restaurant itself is nice and cosy, the food was tasty if a bit limited. The wine list is very extensive.
However because of the attitude of the staff we probably wouldn’t go back again.
We have been to Crusting Pipe on our Christmas day out for the last 10 years or so. Despite booking and confirming the day before we were not expected. Initially we were offered a table by the bar which was tiny but after complaining we were found a table in the restaurant section. It was not a great start however happily resolved fairly quickly. It took a while to get someone's attention to order drinks and when the food came it was a little disappointing. Veg was overcooked, filet steak was good quality but was absolutely charcoal on one side. All in all disappointing and not up to the usual standards.
Had a lovely lunch here - the food was good and the service quick, would recommend for a good quality central London meal, without breaking the bank. Will certainly be bringing the family back
Breakfast menu looked great too
An interesting venue with lots of little alcoves. The food was good and was not overpriced. Only one small criticism is that service was rather slow. That being said, I would go there again.
Warm welcome and good choices across the menus. Quick service but not rushed.
Great catch up with family ! Great atmosphere . Thank you ;)
A most pleasant place to be during a very warm evening in Covent Garden. I had a table next to the windows over the sunken courtyard below the old market buildings. I enjoyed the scallop & prawn thermidor again, and the 2013 Lagrange half bottle with the steak. Shirley my waitress was upbeat & efficient ... sorry you had to come in on your day off Shirley but I was glad for myself! Oh and I should mention the "Portonic" (white port + tonic) apertif, again splendid on a hot day. It's Covent Garden so not cheap, but you could easily spend more for the quality of food & wine.
Service could have been better, the waiter never came back to ask if we needed anything, we had to catch his attention. Pricy for what it was.
Very friendly service. The ’Private Room’ tables are perfect for quiet encounters but sitting outside can be very noisy. A fascinating environment in all respects with musicians and buskers.
I know some of Davy's other wine bar restaurants well but this was the first time I've dined at The Crusting Pipe. Thoroughly enjoyed the scallop & prawn Thermidor - the selection of starters seem to differ more between branches than with the mains - the steak was very good too, and I think offering Dauphinoise potatoes instead of chips is a great idea. Half bottle of Chateau Lagrange Saint-Julien 2013 was decently aged, and not too expensive. The seating ranges from tables & booths tucked away deep in this basement restaurant, to tables by the windows into the sunken courtyard beneath the old Covent Garden building. I had one of those tables, and it was pleasant to watch the summer skylight through the glass canopy a couple of stories above me. I shall return, especially for the option to have the Dauphinoise potatoes with the steak. In other respects, this is just like most other Davy's traditional format places: reliably enjoyable food and a wine list to satisfy the wine afficionados.
Great place for a light lunch or a 3 course meal.
Set in the heart of Covent Garden with entertainment if you want it and quiet areas if you don't.
The staff were friendly the food was very good and we will return.
Great atmosphere and location. Good service and food and a really good wine list
Excellent ample food portions. I had the vegetarian pie with chicory which was delicious. We had mini desserts plus coffee option. which is a never idea we sat inside in a wood panel led alcove 5 of us so it was almost like private dining. Will definitely be booking again. If you want to sit outside you can dine and listen to classical musicians at the same time. We didn't do this this time.
This is very much a tourist focused restaurant. It is convenient for the Royal Opera and the Lyceum (why we chose it), and the entertainment was diverting for the kids. However it's busy, noisy and impersonal, and whilst the food is ok, it's nothing special. Ok for pre-theatre but that's it.
Had a really nice dinner here - scallops to start and steak for main. All cooked perfectly.
Ordered olives and bread, olives were nice but bread was normal sliced! Not what we expected. Wine, Beer music we’re excellent
A decent spot in Covent Garden. Had a good lunch, good wine list. Cosy as well as lots of nooks and crannies to hide in
Good food, but slow service. Waiting staff friendly but order wasn't put through correctly and had to come back to table to check around 15 min after ordering.
While the food and ambience were good the table service was a little wanting. Attention by the staff was somwhat spamodic but always polite.
To be able to purchase house wine by the carafe would be a more economic way to purchase one's drink whether it be demi litre or a full litre. To buy one's wine by the glass is expensive.
Slower service. Food was good but not great. Extensive wine menu.
Arrived for our booked slot, unfortunately the booking hadn’t been recorded even though booked through open table, luckily they could fit us in. Food was good, service very good and we had a pleasant lunch
The service was iffy to say the least. Yes we were in an alcove but I had to keep getting up to find the waitress. Tagliatelle for the ladies in the party was apparently very good. My steak and kidney pie was dry no gravy in it and the meat was grey. Dissappointing. Overall did not feel as if I had received value for money.
The mulled wine is really good!
My favourite place for lunch in London.
What an amazing find so glad my freind recommended it, we had a fab time. Staff very freindly and helpful, food was very good and great choice.
Great time made special by waiting staff. Would highly recommend.
Great location in Covent Garden. Live music to entertain you while enjoying an afternoon tea, which was lovely, presented on a 3 tier cake stand- including sandwiches, smoked salmon, filled brioche buns, warm savoury muffins, scones with clotted cream and jam, Battenburg cake, sticky toffee cake and fudge brownie. More than enough for 2 hungry adults! A selection of teas and coffee were available to choose and we upgraded to the Champagne afternoon tea for an additional £6. At a total of £34.00 each was far better value as other similar options such as the Shard and Claridges etc
16/9/18 Plentiful Sunday Lunch...very nice ambience and great service; even had a lively discussion over the New Zealand wine we'd chosen as we were with our New Zealand family over for a holiday.
Only downside was the Roast Beef - which was a bit overdone and chewy!
We came to your restaurant to celebrate my parents 55 wedding anniversary. They had never been to Covent Garden so I brought them here as my husband and I have been many times. They had a wonderful time. Great food , service and entertainment thank you
Food very nice, just a light afternoon early tea. Sharing player was excellent, as was surroundings. We had a inside table at French doors so nice bit fresh air away from Covent humdrum but enough to listen to opera and musicians outside.
Service was ok but waitress a little Sturn faces but minor comment really
The service and food was outstanding. Everyone was highly impressed.
Good dining experience met with a group of college friends. Had our own private area so it was easy to chat and laugh together. Food was good and despite a mix up with the order it all went very well.
This was our first dinner in London (we are from US). They didn’t have record of our OpenTable reservation (it’s pen and paper). Servers didn’t come around for at least 20 mins, never got the water we asked for and food took over an hour to reach the table. We had to go out and seen a server to refill our empty wine glasses and get the check. We’ve so far rated every other reservation here in London positively but this one was pretty bad.
Absolutely brilliant time with fantastic entertainment, sat outside and loved the atmosphere.
Great food, cool place. We sat in a coal room which was awesome. Nice staff
We were able, by sitting in seats by the open windows, to enjoy the buzz of Covent Garden and the different musicians whilst still being quiet enough to chat. Helpful service good food. Inner rooms allow privacy for groups if wanted.
Conveniently reserved table for our family celebration
Outstanding wine selection - with the best Rioja Alta we have ever enjoyed !
Covered outside safe from the elements
Ambience enhanced by very talented buskers
Excellent meal with my sister pre theatre but would have prfered more of a choice for the pre theatre soecials
Surprisingly for a Davy's wine bar it was rather average , lacking the atmosphere you get elsewhere. Might be that it's a functional tourist venue rather than more of a city locals ?
Staff look knackered so either overworked or short on a Saturday .
Service wasn't great, almost like a lazy approach. When we asked for the list of teas we just got given the 3 usuals and almost pushed to make a choice when we had asked for the list. Otherwise correct but not warm or welcoming. We had afternoon tea, the sandwiches and the cakes were good, the scones weren't fully cooked. We had to ask for extra jam and they provided so little. And they forgot the cheeses that came with the tea, had to ask, wait for them to doublecheck and get them 15 min later.
