Found just down the road from Old Spitalfields Market, The Culpeper has what Jay Rayner describes as ‘a chef who knows what he’s doing.’ Using ingredients from its own rooftop garden, the food is fresh and simple, but full of flavour.
The Culpeper Kitchen is known for its sharing mains, which include 35-day aged 1kg prime rib with Pomme Anna chips, and Whole Lemon Sole. Using local produce The Culpeper Kitchen keeps it seasonal, with a menu that changes weekly. Wash everything down with a great selection of natural wines.
Food was fantastic, really tasty and great veggie roast option! The staff were all super friendly and seemed to have everything under control. It's also a really beautiful building!
Lovely atmosphere, service and food was exquisite. Really enjoyed overall and will go again!
The Bavette roast was outstanding & the service was fab. Also loved how quiet it was! It seems almost impossible to find a restaurant that you can hear yourself speak in these days. The atmosphere was on point. The only thing that stopped me marking 5/5 was the desert, it was a little bit lack lustre in comparison the main meal. Otherwise a very enjoyable Sunday evening, thank you.
We sat in the greenhouse and it was great - made even better by the German waiter - he was so
Funny and Charming .... I forget his name but he told us jokes and really made
Us feel very special and welcomed ! Well done we will
A trendy, lively atmosphere with gorgeous decor and good food. Went for a catch up with friends and enjoyed a very nice Sunday roast. Could do with a few more veggie options.
The food is great, small menu of selected produce so you know you will get something fresh.
Retuned on a Saturday evening after coming across it by accident and trying a Sunday lunch which was superb! Wasn’t disappointed again. Great staff and quality food
Tasty food and great ambience.
Good choice on menu.
Absolutely fantastic food in the restaurant. Amazing, friendly staff and we were pleasantly surprised by the value. Wonderful experience. We are planning to go back very soon.
Booking was at 1430 and we arrived early.
At 1428 the staff were already getting twitchy telling us that the kitchen closes at 1500.
The booking should really reflect this at the time of booking as we felt extremely rushed.
Food was okay, pie was extremely dry. No gravy provided.
It's quite expensive for what it was. Won't be coming back
The staff made us feel very welcome and the food was delicious. They managed to keep even my grumpy dad happy! The dining room is quite small so definitely book in advance.
on arriving at the restaurant we had to wait a considerable time before being shown to our booked table. This was because there was only one person on the reception who was making other bookings on the system and nobody else could check the reservation.
Not a big issue but with a group of 6 hanging around at the top of the stairs was a little uncomfortable.
That said food as always was superb
Sadly, I did not enjoy the good at my second trip to Culpepper.
It was an extremely limited menu. I chose crab with chili jam. The very small dabs of crab, which seemed freshly cooked, were dressed with some shaved cucumber. However, the delicate taste of the crab was overwhelmed by the exceedingly sweet jam. The pork loin was good but the rosti potatoes were covered with yet more jam, this time fig jam. There were also stewed prunes/plums which didn't add anything to the pork and made the whole dish too sweet.
My companions had squid risotto with crispy squid strips on top. Except the squid wasn't crispy and was tasteless.
All this contrasts with my memory of my last visit when the food was innovative, balanced flavours and immaculately prepared. I hope Culpepper chefs find their way again.
Lovely roast bavette and pork. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Really like the Culpeper - I slightly wish that they had greater choice on the menu, even if it was just 5 options for each course rather than 4. Sometimes it's a bit tricky. But love what you do - well done.
Lovely food and pleasant ambience, service ok, a little intrusive occasionally - leaning across the entire table to serve plates rather than coming around.
Great atmosphere and good food
Everything was great! I had a great time. The food was excellent and the service was brilliant.
The food was far too salty. Ruined the taste of the food and I would not go there again because of this. Otherwise, the staff were very nice and helpful and the ambience was pleasant.
Dishes are tiny and not suitable for sharing
Service was slow. Certain waiters/waitresses were rude, unfriendly and inattentive. Drinks were served after the food arrived. Cutlery was not replaced when it should have been. Sunday roast was good quality but the starters/amuses bouches were not good value for money. There was also a leak in the ceiling which was highlighted to a very disinterested waitress with no apology.
Overall food was good, service was not and certainly not for the price of the food. I would hesitate to return.
Awesome Sunday lunch in a really cool spot. Food was delicious and the service is very good. Zero complaints about this place. We really enjoyed our meal and the time flew past.
lovely food, lovely staff, lovely service lovely drink and lovely lovely lveoly
Second time we’ve been here and the roast was second to none!
Good food, slightly small portions for the starters, lovely service, overall would come back for sure...
It’s rare to get a chance in the City to sit by a window! Despite the noise of Commercial Road the first floor Resturant is bright and airy. A simple but superb menu. The fish always superb. Great attentive service with good wines. Tables not too close which is also good. I have never been disappointed.
Reccomend the bavette roast. Outstanding. Great option for Sunday roast in general
Just superb as ever. Great service and really tasty foods
We booked The Culpeper for my birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. Delicious food, friendly staff and beautiful decor.
Not a review on food itself as didn't eat there in the end. Viewed a sample menu online before booking and it looked amazing. However once we were seated in restaurant there was nothing to our liking at all, when we mentioned the sample menu we were then told it was the bar menu. We declined to order and left. Staff were nice but it should have highlighted online it wasn't a restaurant menu instead of leading us to believe it was.
Really great venue and lovely roast dinner! Have been looking for a good roast in London for ages! Shame the rooftop bar was closed as we probably would have stayed for another but overall a really nice place to eat
Was great we been for a Sunday roast and it was delicious!
The service was great and the decoration of the place was really beautiful.
Perfect meal in a perfect place!
Great fish and chips. The aubergine wasn't really cooked a but overall was good. The staff was great with us and very helpful.
We went for Sunday lunch and had the chicken & vegetarian roasts. The main (chicken/ spinach Wellington) were fine but the vegetables were lack luster and very plain.
For people who don’t drink alcohol there was an extremely limited drinks menu of cola or lemonade which was a bit of a shame considering how many nice mocktails or non-alcoholic gins other restaurants are offering.
Overall it wasn’t bad but wasn’t great either.
I can't rate the food as we left without eating. I felt that with a pared down menu (4 main course choices) it's only polite and good restaurant management to have all four available on a Saturday night. So rather than compromise on our choices we opted to go elsewhere. Service was perfectly pleasant.
Couldn't fault the food, amazing, would love to go back. BUT, the service was atrocious as in the waiters seemed genuinely annoyed to have the provide us with any help.
At one point the waiter said 'you people' when we asked if they had anything other than blue milk. (we needed soy milk)
Unfortunately due to the weather the rooftop was closed but we were not previously advised and staff seemed confused by our arrival. We were sat in the restaurant, then when we decided to only take drinks multiple staff asked us if we wanted to move downstairs until we were told we had to (fair enough, we just felt staff were being strange about it!). We sat downstairs in the bar which was fine, but the cocktails were a let down... Mine tasted like soda water! I'd try this place again but only if the rooftop is open.
Great food, good staff, beautiful view for sunset off the roof terrace
I really enjoyed the evening. Great table with space , staff really helpful and asking if everything ok. Food delicious and a beautiful venue. Very calm and relaxed in there and I would really recommend it. A real mix of people and very comfortable setting. I would highly recommend and it was a great evening
horrendous meal! it was cold, and when we complained we were told it would take 15 mins as they start from fresh again! it came back twice as bad. Raw meat, black Yorkshire pudding cooked hours ago, and still cold veg. I admit my husbands words were not good, but we had booked this meal weeks before coming and was looking forward to it, and very hungry. We are not new to Culpeper and never experienced a bad meal. The manager was rude to my husband telling him he had said enough!!! I wouldn't recommend any of my business associates or friends to go here. Extremely disappointed and shocked they could serve such a dreadful plate of food!
