Found just down the road from Old Spitalfields Market, The Culpeper has what Jay Rayner describes as ‘a chef who knows what he’s doing.’ Using ingredients from its own rooftop garden, the food is fresh and simple, but full of flavour.
The Culpeper Kitchen is known for its sharing mains, which include 35-day aged 1kg prime rib with Pomme Anna chips, and Whole Lemon Sole. Using local produce The Culpeper Kitchen keeps it seasonal, with a menu that changes weekly. Wash everything down with a great selection of natural wines.
What Insiders Are Saying
The Culpeper is a designer gastropub that's good for groups, with an upstairs restaurant, and a rooftop bar and garden.
I have heard positive reviews of The Culpeper, but would not recommend it from a recent visit. We had a roast, and the food was cold and dry, the gravy like water. Was pretty disappointed, although the atmosphere was pleasant and imagine it would be nice for a drink.
I love the place, particularly the terrace with vegetable patches and herbs, also the other floor have some botanical arrangements. I ordered aubergine with some green and chick peas and it was well presented but undercooked, not sure if they were in a hurry or what, my friends ordered fish and chips and reported to be average, anyhow I still love the place and I hope next time food will be improved.

Amazing Sunday roast. The flank beef is especially good. Shame they don’t offer half portions for children.
Never disappoints. Great food and service, always feel looked after. A lovely pub for a casual drink or a special occasion.
Tolle außergewöhnliche Location, netter etwas übertriebener Service. Das Essen passt nicht so recht zum Auftritt des Restaurants, war ok. Bei schönem Wetter eine tolle Dachterasse.
We booked in the first floor restaurant, and had the corner window table (seats 4). It was perfect. Fantastic food, great vibe, great service.
Cant fault anything , food was delicious, staff very friendly and ambience fabulous, I will be back soon!!
Great atmosphere and a fab roof garden for the nice weather. Drinks arrived at the table after our food which was a shame and they were a bit too quick to take our plates (one of us was still eating). Food was great though.
Excellent service and very friendly staff. I was given a choice to dine on the first floor or second floor. We’ve dined on the second floor and not noisy at all and very peaceful.
Food was amazing given the quality and the amount they give you, you get what you pay for! The fish croquette is slightly small but delicious.
Came here for my boyfriends surprise 30th dinner. The staff were very accommodating with my requests and helped with organising the surprise and cake etc. The food was delicious. The only thing was that the drinks took a long time to get out but I suppose we were quite a big party so fairly understandable. Special mention to Lucy for making me less stressed about the surprise! Thanks.
So.. we have been at Culpepper many times and this one was a mixed bag
The entrée Tacos was disappointing: the taco tasted tasteless and seemed older than a day
The bavette was good but not amazing like it used to be
The waiter started tidying the restaurant before we were done so not nice
Most importantly we thing we paid for £30 extra for no reason even accounting for service and tax... DISAPPOINTING
Better for a pint and a meal in the bar than the restaurant upstairs which is pricey
Fantastic food, as always.
Good Sunday roast, not outstanding. Roasties were lovely.
Always one of my favourite local restaurants, The Culpeper gives Sunday roasts a good name. If you think roast chicken is your mother's tired 1980 go-to, think again. Cannot get enough of these roasts!
Went for Sunday roast and it was absolutely lovely. Two
Had the beef and two had the lamb. Everyone loved it. Service is top notch. Can’t wait to go back.
Went for Sunday lunch - only real roast on was Lamb which was really tasty but my friend had his mind set on roast beef for traditional Sunday lunch. Had the cheeses after and they were lovely, deep in flavour, great finish to the meal. Staff were excellent
We had a great time at The Culpeper. The food was in a decent portion, my lamb was very outstanding. They also (apparently) change the menu every week so would pay the second visit! The settings and environment were aesthetically pleasing. Sitting next to the window and enjoying the meal, I'd come next time!
I wasn't too impressed by one or two of the starters - particularly the ox tongue. I really enjoyed the Bavette and every other part of the roast but I expected a bit more choice on the menu. As I don't eat Pork the steak was the only option (unless vegetarian).
Fantastic food in the restaurant upstairs. Had Bavette with Horseradish cream and a potato- block thing fried in goose fat. Probably the best Sunday lunch I've ever had.
Such a lovely pub, very nice atmosphere and excellent, professional staff. The Sunday roasts were fantastic, and we had a lovely meal. Would definitely recommend!
The downstairs is lively and youthful - not so great getting attention at the bar if you have some grey hairs...
Upstairs is more convivial, a nice dining room and relaxed and charming service.
Food was good. Our artichokes salad was under seasoned but that remediable. We mostly had lamb main course which was good.
Wines were good and start around £23 a bottle and then there's a slew at £40. I would go again. It's an up-market gastropub experience. We liked their negroni which is made with prosecco and is a northern speciality, apparently.
Service was terrible, both waiters serving us were rude and unfriendly. The sharing portions were barely even big enough for 2 and although food was ok value for money was very poor. It is also ridiculous that they will not bring beer or the bill to the table, making the customer travel to the bar for the bill and two floors down for beer! I will not return nor shall I recommend to anyone else. Was so looking forward to my meal here but was really disappointing.
Great food and fantastic service! Highly recommend
Busy, lots of atmosphere, nice food and snacks and very helpful staff
Excellent. Beautiful food staff friendly and helpful. Good location
Great food, service and atmosphere. Can't be faulted
We had a lovely evening at the Culpeper. The food was fantastic. I definitely recommend this restaurant!!!
Visited on a Tuesday and the atmosphere was amazing. Fantastic location and with a roof top garden supplying the kitchen with rare herbs a real plus.
Really good. Lovely pub and a great environment. We took our dog with us and he was pleased as punch. Had a Sunday roast, I had beef which was amazing. My wife had lamb which came out overcooked and they happily swapped it for a beef roast. Very happy and we'll definitely go back.
A beautiful, rustic come retro setting with a lovely chilled ambiance. The meal was delicious and the flavor combinations were sublime. This was our belated valentines meal and the cosy relaxed setting was perfect for such an event. A very enjoyable evening with great food. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Sunday roast one of the best I've ever had, only slight minus the quantity of the chicken. Without being greedy, it looked more like 2 drumsticks than a quarter of a chicken. Enjoyed the lunch very much though. Very good quality and cooked with a lot of attention to detail.
Great service and the food was better than expected. Would have been nice to have more options as a vegetarian but the gnocchi was very good! Would recommend.
The food is always delicious. A real winner. Great selection of organic wines too.
The place is beautiful and the Sunday roast was pretty good. I’ll be back
Lovely, attentive service. Great food. Special without being fussy or formal. Every dish was excellent
Very nice food and great service. Reasonable price too, £70 for 2
Tasty food, good drinks and comfortable/trendy atmosphere, but a bit expensive.
Great pub downstairs, friendly.
Upstairs restaurant, good service, interesting food - well presented, but lacked some flavour punch, a bit underwhelming. Wine list a bit expensive for the choices.
Good beer, good atmosphere, nice staff.
