The Fox at Willian
With all this on offer it is an ideal village pub. There is a fun social menu to enjoy with themed evenings throughout the year.
The Fox has been recognised and scooped many awards and had recently been named in Top 50 Gastropubs in the UK and had the prestigious title of "Hertfordshire's Dining Pub of the Year 2011', by the Good Pub Guide.
There's always a lot going on and a great welcome for you at The Fox.
£62 we will never get back, the set menu was overpriced and overrated.
A tiny starter was produced and a cold roast dinner with fatty, leftover meat.
£4 for one soft drink.
On reflection we would rather have had a big mac meal drive-through and sat in a car park whilst eating.
First time we visited thus establishment. Very impressed. Excellent menu and really beautiful food thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were well trained friendly and attentive. Great service will definitely come again
Thank you for this lovely review. We hope to see you again soon.
Portion sizes are far too small.
I paid £24.95 for venison for 3 mouthfulls.
I went for dinner not a tasting, wouldn't return when portions are that size.
Hi David, Thank you for the review. We apologise that you didn't feel your meal was good value, we do sincerely appreciate all customer feedback, and so we will take your comments on board and report back to the kitchen team. All the best.
Attempted twice to get a table here, failed the first time as was fully booked during the day. I know now why, service was great and the food was even better.
The Ambience was good but I felt it lacked character for an old pub. It felt a little like a cafe or canteen with little or no privacy. I found the menu to have little choice and quite expensive considering it is still a pub. I felt it was trying to be something it isn’t although I couldn’t fault the food or preparation.
Once I received my bill bearing in mind only two of us dined I noted a 10% service charge was added to my bill. If I chose to leave a tip and how much should be my choice and although I appreciate this happens in the west end, the Fox is still only a village pub and I certainly wasn’t going to argue my bill in front of my guest. If the tip is to subsidise the waiting staffs wages, then they should consider keeping less of the profit.
Value for money overall is pretty poor but it remains busy so nothing is likely to change .
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. The 10% service charge is optional for all guests, so when you dine with us again, please feel free to ask for this to be removed. As a small village pub with a 2 rosette restaurant, the decor and menu choices have been carefully chosen to reflect this and we are sorry to hear you felt it lacked character. We will pass your feedback onto the management team, as your comments are invaluable to us, and we do hope to see you again in the future.
The food was exquisite. The wine we had was truly excellent. The restaurant is very brightly lit so not cosy or intimate, but is a great place for families to enjoy a celebratory meal (we saw quite a number). Service was good, nice and friendly and helpful, but felt a little untrained; for example, our waitress was very attentive but asked us how our meal was before we'd had a chance to taste more than a mouthful. Food is all locally sourced and high quality. Overall this was very high end cooking - clearly fine dining, and we felt it was very reasonable for the quality and execution of the food.
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review for us. We pride ourselves in using fresh local ingredients so are pleased to hear you enjoyed the meal and rated us five-stars for food. We value your feedback and will take your comments on board with regards to staff training. We hope to see you again soon.
The Fox never disappoints, the puddings especially were delicious
We do love our puddings - and we are pleased to hear you enjoyed them too. Hope to see you again soon.
We arrived late due to traffic hold ups. We tried to ring but had to ring several times before we got an answer. When we did get through, the booking was put back without question, which was great.
Overall a good experience. Starters and desserts were both good. Mains were tasty, but lamb and duck served very pink, without any warning from serving staff.
Service was very slow, but in fairness we were warned that there was a large party dining.
We bought a relatively expensive bottle of wine which was brought to the table and poured, without us being given the opportunity to taste. Only then did we notice that it was barely chilled. After we mentioned this to the waiter, he brought over an ice bucket, but we had to drink two large glasses relatively warm, which was a shame.
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We apologise that the meats were not cooked to your preference, and the wine was not poured to taste first or properly chilled, but we hope you were still able to enjoy the meal? We value all feedback and will take your comments on board and see what we can do to ensure the level of service we provide is always of the high standard we usually pride ourselves on no matter what. we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards
Food was outstanding and the waiting/bar staff are really welcoming and friendly.
Thank you for rating us 10/10 with all 5 stars. We are pleased you enjoyed your recent visit at the Fox and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
The Fox always delivers great food in a lovely setting. On our last visit, 7/08/19, the music was a little too loud and the service a little below par. A young, inexperienced waitress, we think.
However, still one of our favourite places for fine dining.
Hi Brian, Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We value all feedback and will take your comments on board and see what we can do to ensure the level of service we provide is consistently superb no matter what. Hope to see you again soon.
Staff were very welcoming and could not be more accommodating. Service was quick and efficient. Food was amazing, plenty of choice and arrange beautifully. Will definitely be coming back.
Never disappoints great service food amazing and presentation beautiful .
Thank you for your lovely review. We hope to see you again soon :)
Lovely surroundings and food and service were superb.
Hi Paul, Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, we are happy to hear you enjoyed your visit, and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards
My starter was really good (smoked chicken terrine) didn't get any actual smokiness from the dish but that was not an issue given that it was delicious with the pineapple it was served with -a really good course served with excellent bread.
The main course was lamb roast and I would say it was very average. The gravy had no real depth of flavour, plus there wasn't enough of it, but I have yet to eat a roast in a restaurant that does serve enough. so I certainly don't hold that against The Fox as it seems to be the norm everywhere. If a gravy/sauce/Jus is super rich I think a little goes a long way, but in this instance that was certainly not the case. Only two vegetables were served, carrots and a cabbage neither of which were packing a punch and were on the plate for the sake of it it seemed, although well cooked. The lamb was very soft and moist, and clearly cooked well, but again, had no whack of 'wow' that lamb has the power to do.
I also think (and I appreciate it is not traditional) that a Sunday lunch out in a restaurant should have a Yorkshire pudding included on all choices, not just beef. I also think that said yorkshire should look spectacular on the plate as it is something of a novelty to most people who are unable to recreate at home. The Yorkshire that came with my Husband's beef was small, pale and certainly not fit to mop up remains as its function so expertly lends itself to.
Service was great, everyone that served us was knowledgeable and friendly and super efficient without being over the top. The surroundings were also lovely, and the setting is very pleasant.
That being said I will still come here to eat and drink because the place has a great vibe and I enjoy the surroundings - however, I think I will probably have my roast at home from now on!
Excellent and throughly enjoyed by my guests who will be pleased to come again.
Absolutely fantastic meal! The waiter was so friendly and kind, offering advice on meal choices. The food was divine! Excellent meal and fabulous service!
Hi Stevie, Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. We are so pleased to hear you had a nice dining experience with us and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Kind Regards
Amazing place! Food simply delicious, served very beautifully, great staff! Well priced. Would definitely recommend. Thank you!
First visit to the Fox. My friend enjoyed everything we ate, on a very hot day the restaurant was lovely and cool.
Will definitely eat there sgain
Really tasty food and great service. Rare that you can find a pub that serves high quality food, has great service and pulls it off. Definitely recommend!
Had very nice meal, food very tasty. Service prompt. Friendly attentive staff. Will definitely be back and look forward to trying some of there other restaurants
Nice and cool with air conditioning. Modern room with plenty of space. Not too busy so quiet and comfortable.
Service was good. Food was excellent. Prices were reasonable. No complaints!
Loved my visit
As a very seasoned reviewer, who absolutely adores his food (72 Michelin stars so far) I saw this venue in the good food guide and frankly wasn’t disappointed!
The venue itself has limited parking in the car park and was incredibly busy on Sunday lunch.
Starter was a delicious beef carpaccio with an amazing piccalilli sauce.
The main was a Sunday roast with superb quality beef roast potatoes of exceptional quality nice veg and a red wine jus, minor disappointment was the slightly hard Yorkshire.
The dessert was a Tiramasu with Matcha, kirsch cherry and white chocolate aero. The texture was firm but d licious.
The staff are efficient polite and attentive, did take a little time to pay
Toilets were clean and well presented
Was it worth the 120 mile round trip? Oh yes
Ps vital to book at busy times I suspect.!
Excellent food & service. Would definitely go back.
Varied menu and good choices on both standard and daily menu. Starter portion size was minuscule though tasty - poor value for money. Mains were well presented and tasted good. My fish was verging on overdone but was flavoursome despite loss of texture. Overall a pleasant meal at a fair price. Very nice waiting staff.
The food is very good, the service is superb. A very nice setting and, all in all, a great place for a leisurely lunch.
Lovely meal and restaurant, excellent service. I didn’t really enjoy my Matcha pudding but everything else was excellent.
Excellent food and service. We chose vegetarian dishes and they were outstanding and beautifully presented. Actually among the best vegetarian food I have ever eaten.
Food was a bit hit and miss- salmon roulade with grapefruit was a little bitter and the dressed crab was very small.
The room itself was nice and it was quiet enough to have a decent conversation
Great Starters and really good service, promt and efficient.
Was no trouble provided us with gluten free bread as an alternative...
Unfortunately duck skin was so tough for the main it was inedible and the cauliflower steak was much to spicy, everything else was perfect.
It was my daughters 18th birthday and she choose to eat in the Fox being her first experience. The waiter serving us was a very nice guy who made a point in serving her desert with a birthday candle and chocolate birthday message.
Will definitely eat here again as we have done on many occasions... but could work on the negative points to justify there great reputation and value for money.
Enjoyed our second visit to the Fox. Food very good although if picky I thought the service was a little slow although we were in no rush. Aircon was a bit OTT where we sat! We travelled an hour south to the Fox and met our daughter who lives in London so a good halfway venue.
We had Mains and Puddings. Mains we very nice, but not what I would describe as outstanding. Puddings were excellent. Overall I consider that it was a bit expensive for what we had, but then it was a Sunday.
A disappointing evening at The Fox. It started well with good broccoli soup and home made tomato bread. However my partners duck having asked for it to be pink came well done, apparently the duck is pre cooked! I finished my main course fish and then we waited and waited for the replacement duck which was apparently cooked from fresh to achieve medium rare as requested.
On a positive note our waiter was very pleasant and helpful.
The service was good and the food was lovely, we all managed 3 courses :)
My only criticism was when we ordered our second bottle of prosseco, there was not any chilled so we had to wait whilst it was placed in the freezer to cool. This was a bit of a shame really as we did not have it with our food and in my opinion, was due to poor organisation and management considering our table booking was an early evening one.
Lunch for family group of 7. Efficient friendly service. Fish and chips & burgers voted very good but the dressed crab was very small, dry and at £16.50 over-priced. Good ice-cream/sorbet selection. Disappointing deconstruction of the Eton Mess though, would have preferred original version.
Lovely food and wine, friendly and helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere.
I have eaten here many times mainly for celebrations but also just for a treat
The food is consistently excellent as is the service from the lovely staff
The menu is varied with enough choices for all palates
The premises are spotlessly clean from the dining area through to the loos
Excellent value for money Well done to all
Thought it was a great meal in a great restaurant
Good food well cooked, not your standard menu. It was Father's Day and a little too rowdy for our slighter older group. Waiting staff were outstanding - polite, friendly, prompt, and with personality. Would recommend, and come again.
Pub with dining room, nice atmosphere with good mix of people. Dogs allowed in bar area. Friendly service with plenty of staff. Food tasty and very well presented, a cut above the usual. Good selection of wines with 4 or 5 reds and whites under £35. We had an excellent carmenere from Chile. Bill
for two people for three courses, wine and service a little over £100 so not cheap. Some mains over £25 which is toppy. A very pleasant evening out.
Some of the meals were a little on the small side. Restaurant a bit bright.
