The Fox at Willian
With all this on offer it is an ideal village pub. There is a fun social menu to enjoy with themed evenings throughout the year.
The Fox has been recognised and scooped many awards and had recently been named in Top 50 Gastropubs in the UK and had the prestigious title of "Hertfordshire's Dining Pub of the Year 2011', by the Good Pub Guide.
There's always a lot going on and a great welcome for you at The Fox.
Lovely meal and restaurant, excellent service. I didn’t really enjoy my Matcha pudding but everything else was excellent.
Excellent food and service. We chose vegetarian dishes and they were outstanding and beautifully presented. Actually among the best vegetarian food I have ever eaten.
Food was a bit hit and miss- salmon roulade with grapefruit was a little bitter and the dressed crab was very small.
The room itself was nice and it was quiet enough to have a decent conversation
Great Starters and really good service, promt and efficient.
Was no trouble provided us with gluten free bread as an alternative...
Unfortunately duck skin was so tough for the main it was inedible and the cauliflower steak was much to spicy, everything else was perfect.
It was my daughters 18th birthday and she choose to eat in the Fox being her first experience. The waiter serving us was a very nice guy who made a point in serving her desert with a birthday candle and chocolate birthday message.
Will definitely eat here again as we have done on many occasions... but could work on the negative points to justify there great reputation and value for money.
Enjoyed our second visit to the Fox. Food very good although if picky I thought the service was a little slow although we were in no rush. Aircon was a bit OTT where we sat! We travelled an hour south to the Fox and met our daughter who lives in London so a good halfway venue.
We had Mains and Puddings. Mains we very nice, but not what I would describe as outstanding. Puddings were excellent. Overall I consider that it was a bit expensive for what we had, but then it was a Sunday.
A disappointing evening at The Fox. It started well with good broccoli soup and home made tomato bread. However my partners duck having asked for it to be pink came well done, apparently the duck is pre cooked! I finished my main course fish and then we waited and waited for the replacement duck which was apparently cooked from fresh to achieve medium rare as requested.
On a positive note our waiter was very pleasant and helpful.
The service was good and the food was lovely, we all managed 3 courses :)
My only criticism was when we ordered our second bottle of prosseco, there was not any chilled so we had to wait whilst it was placed in the freezer to cool. This was a bit of a shame really as we did not have it with our food and in my opinion, was due to poor organisation and management considering our table booking was an early evening one.
Lunch for family group of 7. Efficient friendly service. Fish and chips & burgers voted very good but the dressed crab was very small, dry and at £16.50 over-priced. Good ice-cream/sorbet selection. Disappointing deconstruction of the Eton Mess though, would have preferred original version.
Lovely food and wine, friendly and helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere.
I have eaten here many times mainly for celebrations but also just for a treat
The food is consistently excellent as is the service from the lovely staff
The menu is varied with enough choices for all palates
The premises are spotlessly clean from the dining area through to the loos
Excellent value for money Well done to all
Thought it was a great meal in a great restaurant
Good food well cooked, not your standard menu. It was Father's Day and a little too rowdy for our slighter older group. Waiting staff were outstanding - polite, friendly, prompt, and with personality. Would recommend, and come again.
Pub with dining room, nice atmosphere with good mix of people. Dogs allowed in bar area. Friendly service with plenty of staff. Food tasty and very well presented, a cut above the usual. Good selection of wines with 4 or 5 reds and whites under £35. We had an excellent carmenere from Chile. Bill
for two people for three courses, wine and service a little over £100 so not cheap. Some mains over £25 which is toppy. A very pleasant evening out.
Some of the meals were a little on the small side. Restaurant a bit bright.
It was our third visit for a special occasion and we will certainly be back, thank you ...
The food was excellent and all three of us had the Cromer Crab. However it was spoilt because it was so noisy and there is nothing to absorb the noise. Any recommendations would come with a caveat of the noise level.
Visited recently for a birthday lunch. The food was excellent and service was good. Only minor issue is that when the restaurant is busy the noise levels make it a little difficult to have a conversation . However this will not stop us returning
Top notch as always
Gorgeous birthday meal at The Fox with my family. All food was great - especially the deserts!
Stayed here many times and always had high quality cuisine with good variety and selections. They are a good cut above the gastric pub in my estimation. Service is always exceptional from this friendly local establishment. I thoroughly recommend you try it for yourselves.
Second visit but first time for dinner, great food yet again, hard to choose from the menu as so many good things on there.
We had a lovely evening again at the Fox. The whole experience was excellent. From arrival we were shown to our table coats hung up for us, drinks order taken nothing was rushed all very timely. The food was excellent I had the fish and my husband had the steak both cooked as requested. Staff as alway excellent nothing to much trouble. I would highly recommend the Fox well worth a visit.
A really relaxing evening with a great welcome and service. The menu was interesting and the food really top notch. Highly recommended.
Loved the food
Went with 3 couples and everyone enjoyed their meal. Nice place friendly staff
Best burger I’ve had with tasty relish, perfectly made, not compact and juicy, highly recommend. Husband had fish with only mushy peas he’s ever eaten as was so tasty infused with truffle oil. Will definitely be returning
Great food, lovely waitress served us with a smile on a very busy Friday night. Always enjoy an evening at The Fox
Great venue for a relaxed dinner with my dad - fab food, wine and service and a perfect ambience and noise level - not so quiet that you can hear everyone's cutlery clattering, not too noisy, just a nice background hum of people enjoying themselves. Thank you The Fox!
Superb meal out.
It's one of our favourite restaurants but this time it was even better. Every meal from starters to dessert was excellent.
The food was excellent. The staff incredibly helpful in making the meal very special for our daughters birthday. We had a brilliant evening.
A perfect meal to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. Food was first class and waitress staff really friendly and attentive.
Thank you and would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.
Fabulous roast dinner and all the staff were friendly and attentive.
The thing about the Fox is that it is in no way cheap, however you do get wonderfully taste food and despite the portions looking small they most definitely are not. Because of all the little bits of sauce and accompaniment they are rich and sumptuous. Would thoroughly recommend it but remember it is around £50 per head for 3 courses
Nice bright restaurant and good location for lunch. Just underwhelmed by the taste of the food. It looked better than it tasted and so it seemed a bit expensive for what it was. Wouldn't rush back as was a little disappointed - have tasted much better pub food wise.
Our second visit and equally as enjoyable as our last.Food was exceptional as was the service from your friendly and welcoming staff.Just one small housekeeping issue-cobweb on light sensor(?) just below amplifier top right hand side of marble tiled wall. It's occupant was spotted along the top side of the banquette seating.
The service was good and 4 of the 5 meals were very nice.
The dressed crab had lots of bits of shell in it unfortunately.
Overall a good meal
It is just that the extras for water and sauces makes this just a bit on the expensive side.
Wonderful starters but the celeriac in the pea purée ruined it and wasn’t mentioned on the menu. The decor could do with an update too as the furniture is a bit cafe like. But overall definitely when of the best gastro pubs in the area.
Hope to be back soon! Having not visited for several years it 's good to see standards haven't slipped.
Pub with restaurant, food was a la cart, normal thing, some things you didn't know what they were on the menu, big plates small food, but the food was very nice although the steak did not come as we ordered it (one medium was more rare, another just about medium) confusion as to which was done how,as we didnt want to make a fuss about it, we swapped them around with each other and my friends were just able to managed the steaks they had, still nice. Wine very expensive to buy a bottle.
Bad point - service charge was automatically included but we felt that as we didn't get a lot of attendance and had to ask for a few things that should have been dealt with, it didn't warrant what was charged, we paid what we though as the receipt did say it was optional. However when we were outside my friends were told to come back in, were marched through the bar and restaurant without being told why, then told that they had not paid enough and we still owed money, we explained why the service charge wasn't paid in full and that the bill said optional and were told it wasn't optional on weekends while he was shaking the bill in front of them. My friend said it didn't say that and then pointed to it on the bill, he just blustered and let them go. He did not ask why we though it didn't warrant it or say anything else to them. Shame as we had enjoyed it up till then, very bad attitude from him, could have been handled a lot better.
We booked for my sisters 50th birthday meal. We always like The Fox so thought it would be a lovely surprise for her. Unfortunately we were seated at a very large round table right near the coffee station. After the first course and as my husband struggles to hear well we asked if we could move to a smaller table. The waitress was superb. After explaining our difficulties she organised a move. Once seated at a table for four it was much better and we could all enjoy the conversation.
As always the food was outstanding. The waitress helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the night immensely.
