The Gallivant

£26 to £40
Contemporary British

With a Scandinavian/New England feel, the Gallivant is a calm, informal and relaxing place to dine. Our small team is dedicated to serving delicious food foraged and sourced locally with some 95% of fresh ingredients coming from the fishermen and farmers who live and work within 10 miles of us. The menu changes often with a daily special lunch menu as well as à la carte, vegetarian and gourmet menus on offer.

The wine list is abundant and includes a selection of sensibly priced local English cuvées, international red and whites as well as pudding and cheese pairings.

Located just across the road from the dunes and beautiful miles of sandy beach beyond, in winter months enjoy the warmth of a roaring fire by the bar and when the weather's fine nab a table on the outdoor terrace.

We visited The Gallivant on a Tuesday night .. we thought it might be a bit quiet and lack ambience ... we were wrong, probably due to the hotel part of the business, the place was nice and busy. The staff were very friendly and the food was really good. All local produce being a proud boast of the restaurant as well. Will definitely go back.

Very pleasantly surprised by menu, food and great wine list. Felt a little rushed with next course coming as soon as last course plates removed but overall very good indeed.

Bloody amazing, i requested something special for the girl i was asking out offically, where i requested some flowers to be brought to the table at the end as a surprise and they did it spectacularly, they even gave us some champange for free, susannah was my point of contact and she even made a joke in our emails, thank you all so much, youve made a difference in my life!! Please can someone buy them all a drink!

Very nice restaurant with a nice atmosphere and of the level you would expect to see in high class London restaurants, completely different and far superior to other nearby pub restaurants. Although we only had Sunday Lunch, I would expect dinner to be at the same level and would thoroughly recommend.

Very good food. The service was a little hit and miss on a couple of occasions, we reminded ourselves we were 'at the beach' but with food to such a high standard you expect the service to match. I think it was a case of 'too many waiters' - 4 different people came to our table, so when something was amiss no one took responsibility. I would still recommend it though - the crab starter was memorable. Final gripe - tables are quite close together.

Food portions are very small and need to be supplemented by side dishes, which obviously cost extra and overall cost is on the expensive side . Menu is the pretty much the same as eighteen months ago. Outside, where we dined looks now a bit lacklustre, much like the service.

The meal started out a little scary. The turnip foam amuse bouche was flavorless, the bread was oddly-flavored and no one liked it, and the butter was ... well, it wasn't butter. It was grey and I think it may have been an awful attempt at shrimp butter. Could we just have a nice sourdough and some fresh butter? But THEN, out came the starters (pea veloute with ham hock), then dinner (lamb rump with harissa couscous that made me want to lick the plate) and then dessert and they were all EXCELLENT. We went from thinking we were about to have a horrible dinner to feeling so happy that we had found this place and had dinner there. So if the first few minutes makes you wonder whether you should be eating there, hang on. It gets much better. Hint: The food was ten times better than The Grill at The George in Rye, where we ate the next night. Go to The Gallivant. You'll be happier.

We enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu along with the flight of wines. The food, wine pairing and service were all impeccable. The standout dish for both myself and my husband was the dessert of yogurt panna cotta with elderflower jelly and strawberry sorbet. It was phenomenal! The only reason I would score The Gallivant a 9 rather than a 10 is because I felt that the stark decor and lack of ambience was not in keeping with the high standard of food and the prices. However, I would highly recommend The Gallivant as their menu and quality of food is wonderful!

The food was good - within a set menu there was good variety, interesting dishes and it was high quality. But the atmosphere is weird - the decor gives off a relaxed bleached-sea vibe but there are lots of uniformed staff giving it quite a formal feel. It also didn't help that a few didn't understand what we were asking (poss not that strong on English) - though once they did every need was addressed.

We had a fantastic meal at The Gallivant for my boyfriend's birthday last week. The food was excellent, especially the fresh fish and desserts, the wine list was very extensive and we were impressed by their ethos of buying local produce. The atmosphere was relaxed and the decor was beautiful. However we were most blown away by the level of service we were given. The waitresses were friendly and attentive and the maître d' even gave us a lift home when we couldn't get a taxi! Thank you so much for a very special evening.

Our first course was nice service was ok we were offered the wine list after we ordered our food and no other drinks list was offered not great when one of us is pregnant ! Out main course came quickly but I was really not impressed my pork was spoilt by finding butchers string in not one but 2 mouthfuls. We were offered desert but the meal was spoilt by then. We did get a lovely desert in the 15th century pub on the way back! The restaurant advertises itself visually as classy and quiet. It wasn't I appreciate it is summer but when booking a meal based on the website images of calm quiet classy interior and the reviews of fine dining I don't really expect to have people in vests and shorts in front of me and shouting kids behind me. I think the Gallivant needs to re think what it is trying to be. A family holiday bar advertising, lower the meal cost slightly and alter the website to show this and I would have written a totally different review.

Had a celebratory meal here with my wife and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Service was very good and the food exceptional - virtually Michelin 1 star standard.. Price was appropriate and we will definitely be back - perhaps to sample their accommodation which is kind of beach chic as against shabby chic and very close to the beach at Camber. Ideal for dog walkers who want a treat after exercising their pooches. Third visit so we must like it.

We did enjoy our meal and we really agree with the Gallivant's ethos in paying their staff higher wages and discouraging tipping of any kind. That way you know exactly what your meal will cost. We went for the 3 course set lunch. We did feel the cod starter was very small and for my daughter (who was not with us) it would not of suited her for a vegetarian as she does not eat fish. All the food was excellent taste though we did find the portion sizes a little small. The chocolate hazelnut dessert was yummy but I think a small portion of mascarpone would of enhanced the dessert. Service and staff were lovely. We did find the restaurant a little noisy buy maybe that was just the building a it was not full. It was very welcoming. And the beach just across the road an added bonus.

My husband and I decided to pay this restaurant a visit. It was mid week and a lunchtime. But still, two other covers! Speaks volumes. Ambience obviously non existent. Food pretentious and such small portions. Even with the set three course menu we came out hungry. White wine served warm! No childs menu. But apparently they serve smaller portions from the main menu. Far better places around.

The manager was unfriendly and unwelcoming, the food was acceptable, but no more. Our salad was over-dressed and the fish was overcooked. The lamb steak was mostly fat and gristle. The desserts were unpleasant. It was all very expensive, and a disappointing experience. The waitress tried hard to be helpful but was foreign and had problems with explaining one of the dishes - she was, however, the most pleasant of all the staff.

We had high hopes of the Gallivant, but were very disappointed and will not return. By 1.30 on Sunday two of the five mains had run out. Starters were ordinary - crab cakes deep fried and very hard; black pudding scotch egg had a rock hard yolk and no evidence of black pudding. Main course of plaice was a very small fillet on a tablespoon of spring greens with some capers; no potatoes or additional vegetables. We ordered a side of new potatoes which took ages to arrive and were unappetising - barely cooked and strangely swimming in water with some chopped red chillies. Puddings/cheese were OK but unmemorable. The wine is very expensive. Service was stressed although the restaurant was half empty, and overall very poor value at £27 for 3 courses plus £3 extra for the potatoes. We have since heard that locals tend not to eat here and can see why, particularly as there are so many restaurants and pubs in the area offering excellent food and much better value.
